Triangeldrama 1: Två offer för ett liderligt och tragiskt svek har dött (Mike Ratledge & Marianne Faithfull). Triangeldrama 2: Nyss-Robert har utsatt nu-Robert för ett mycket märkligt prank. Musikföreningen Play It Loud i samarbete med socialförvaltningen i Katrineholm ger er Sörmlands finest anno 1997. The world met Julian Koster as part of the Elephant 6 Collective in the 1990s, when he played a variety of instruments with Neutral Milk Hotel, Olivia Tremor Control, Elf Power, and his own projects, The Music Tapes and The Orbiting Human Circus. In 2008, he released The Singing Saw at Christmastime, and part of the conceit is that the saws actually do the singing. He's not playing the saws; he's encouraging them to sing. That element of whimsy is part of the fun of Koster's projects and our conversation, though he brought engineer Nesey Gallons on the call with him to be a lifeline when Koster starts to drift too far out.  Our conversation covers some ground, from an unexpected appearance by Leadbelly to a Christmas interlude courtesy of Japanese filmmaker Akira  Kurosawa. Koster and Gallons also turned me on to a Folksways compilation of Ukrainian Christmas songs. The song we hear is "The Miracle of the Birth."

This week, we have a few guests again as Christmas nears. Americana artist Amanda Shires is on hand to talk about For Christmas, and the way it reflects some of the less common impulses behind Christmas music. The husband and wife team of Rod and Rose—country singer Rodney Atkins and Rose Falcon—talk about why they recorded “Winter Wonderland,” and how their conflicting writing styles got them to a new song for this holiday season. Finally, indie multi-instrumentalist Julian Koster drops by to talk about his role in the 2008 album, The Singing Saw at Christmastime.    We'll have more with all three in 2022.   In the news this week, host Alex Rawls contributed a story on the influence of Vince Guaraldi's soundtrack to A Charlie Brown Christmas to The New Orleans Advocate. The story includes quotes from George Winston, Steven Drozd, Kristin Chenoweth, Joey Burns of Calexico, Mega Ran, and Jen Gunderman of The Ornaments, all drawn from episodes of this podcast.    If you're maxing out on the Christmas music you have, let us help. At Spotify, you can listen to our 24-hour “Twelve Songs of Christmas Radio.” Just click Shuffle and you get the Christmas radio experience minus the repetition. Or, you can email Alex@myspiltmilk.com to get an mp3 of our 90-minute holiday mix.    If you haven't already done so, please do what you have to do to get Twelve Songs in your podcast feed. Today we have perhaps the greatest (and possibly only) indie-lofi-folk-punk all star team up of all time (change my mind). To start off we have Neutral Milk Hotel frontman Jeff Mangum singing so simple and sweet... followed by fellow Neutral Milk alum, and master of the musical saw, Julian Koster, and their producer from "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea", and inventor of the non-Pythagorean pitch scale, Robert Schneider. The last had nothing to do with Neutral Milk, but was important to indie folk at the time: Kevin Barnes from a little band called Of Montreal. They were all part of the Elephant 6 Collective, an indie record label that produced much of the indie-lofi-folk-punk from the 90s to 00s. In 2001, after the unexpected success of "In the Aeroplane...", Mangum and the gang decided to take a step back from conventional songwriting, and create something truly conceptual & out there, and very psychedelic. It was a soundtrack for a movie that didn't yet exist. And the movie was a trip. With the short film of the album release in 2008, you gleaned some context, but overall, for both iterations there's a lot to unpack. I definitely recommend watching the short film in the description if at any point you are lost with what we're saying... Low Profile with Markly Morrison

Welcome to the 32nd episode of Low Profile with Markly Morrison, the show that stands at least six feet away from popular music. My guest today, Julian Koster, is a master of the singing saw, a prominent member of cult heroes Neutral Milk Hotel, and the founder of his own group The Music Tapes, both part of the storied Elephant Six Collective in Athens Georgia. He is also the creator of a lavish scripted podcast from WNYC called “The Orbiting Human Circus,” which is in production on its third season. His music is created using an eclectic variety of antiquated recording equipment and unconventional instruments. Julian spoke with me earlier in the fall of 2020 about his involvement in experimental pop, his homespun approach to production, and the perks of having a global audience for the Music Tapes as the backbone of The Orbiting Human Circus. If you want to learn more about The Music Tapes you can find some links on the episode’s website at lowprofilepodcast.com. Thanks to Julian for doing the interview, thanks to Christy Gressman at WNYC for helping me with some background, and thanks so much to you for listening, subscribing and recommending Low Profile to your friends. This is Markly Morrison, wishing you well. Catch you again in a couple of weeks!

CHRISTMAS SPECIAL! 07: Winter Wonderland 02. (Season -03 episode -07). Listeners it's truly a Christmas miracle! I managed to find enough spare time in my life to cobble together a patchy new episode of season negative three, the Christmas Season. In this special episode I continue playing Winter Wonderland, a 1999 text adventure written by Laura Knauth. Oh hey if anyone is confused by the opening and closing bits in this ep, head on over to https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/blurry-christmas-extreme-dinosaurs-with-daniel-k/id972413074?i=1000426367580&mt=2 and listen to the guest-spot I did on the amazingly good podcast It's A Duck Blur. You'll still be confused afterwards, but you will've listened to a Good podcast as well as this weird confusing one. Music in this episode is First Noel by Julian Koster and the track 79s_83w by ambient artist Sleepresearch Facility which I used as background noise for the whole ep.

Neutral Milk Hotel two albums surely cast a long shadow on all involved. Multi-instrumentalist Julian Koster has never shied away from his role in the band — both reuniting with the group and supporting frontman Jeff Mangum in recent years — but all the while the musician has been building a singular body of work all his own, both as a solo artist and through his on-going project, the Music Tapes. For anyone who’s seen the latter in a live setting, it’s clear that Koster is, above all, a storyteller. The band act features a seven-foot-tall metronome and a talking tube television. It’s a living circus built around strange tales and Koster’s songs — very much a product of the Elephant 6 Collective from which it sprung, while remaining uniquely his own. When it was first announced that Koster was working on a podcast with the team behind Welcome to Nightvale, it was clearly serendipity. Three episodes in, podcasting has proven the perfect medium for the musician’s world building, manifesting itself as a sort of classic radio drama beamed from the top of the Eiffel Tower. It’s idiosyncratic and fascinating, a perfect encapsulation of what Koster does best. And yes, he wore the hat.
