This year the Voices International Choir based in Luxembourg is celebrating the holiday season by putting on free concerts to raise money for Children's Charities. With 115 people performing as a part of the choir, this has been a big project to pull together. Jij, one of the members came on the Breakfast Show to talk to us about the rehearsal process and what people can expect from the concert. As the last remaining Voices Internaitonal memeber still singing with the choir she has seen it change and grow since 1996. But some songs become favourites and are sung year after year at the concerts, like a Ukrainian Christmas song that will be performed again for the 4th year running. The music is varied and is sung in many different languages making it both fun and challenging. Entry to the concerts are free. You can find out more here: https://www.voicesinternational.lu/

This edition of Knyzka Corner features Orysia Tracz's book, First Star I See Tonight: Ukrainian Christmas Traditions. Orysia Tracz explores the origins, rituals, and cultural significance of Ukrainian Christmas traditions in her first book, First Star I See Tonight. This book includes a number of articles about Ukrainian Christmas celebrations in Winnipeg and Manitoba since the first immigration to Canada more than 125 years ago. It is the first in-depth English language book on Ukrainian Christmas traditions, and will definitely be of interest to Ukrainian families throughout the world. The First Star I See Tonight begins with a discussion about the importance of tradition in Ukrainian life thatwill stir up memories for readers both young and old. Non-Ukrainian readers will recall their own traditions as they discover the historical origins of Ukrainian Christmas traditions. The greatest strength of this book is its visual appeal. It is simply a beautiful book! Readers who pick it up will be attracted to the illustrations, photographs and layout. The pictures include historical photographs of Ukrainian Christmas celebrations as well as current celebrations both in Ukraine and in North America. It would be a great gift! The research and wealth of information provided by Tracz will fascinate both Ukrainian and non-Ukrainian readers. They will discover a culture which is both strong and vibrant. There is an extensive bibliography for further research. First Star I See Tonight: Ukrainian Christmas Traditions was first published in the fall of 2015 and would be Orysia's last book since she passed away on November 10, 2016. The Tracz family has established a bursary in her memory with the Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko. The second printing of the book in 2021 has a new dedication by Orysia's children, Boyan, Dobryan, and Ruslan. Orysia was a pillar of the Ukrainian community, and her absence is keenly felt. First Star I See Tonight: Ukrainian Christmas Traditions is available online at Koota Ooma, McNally Robinson Booksellers, Yevshan, Audrey's Books and some independent book stores.– Reviewed by Myra Junyk Support the show on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Imagine going out for a bike ride in the forest. The fresh air, the silence, the anxiety. Thats right, anxiety because you are not sure when you get back into phone signal if there will be messages that your town has been bombed. Thats exactly the sort of thing todays guests are dealing with.  We first encountered the Ukrainian bike-packing bag company 7 Roads bags at the recent Bespoked bike show where there were being represented by a customer of theirs, Artem. After speaking to Artem and hearing the 7 Roads story we knew we wanted to hear more and more importantly we knew we wanted to HELP more. So please take the time to listen to the stories of Elena, Stanislav and Artem and perhaps see if there is a way that you can help make it s slightly happier Ukrainian Christmas. A good place to start would be by supporting some of the great Ukrainian companies listed below!  https://www.instagram.com/7r_bags https://7rbags.com/   https://www.instagram.com/fablebag https://www.instagram.com/kzrz_limited https://www.instagram.com/liteway.equipment https://www.instagram.com/mr.catwheel https://www.instagram.com/kindred.uniform https://www.instagram.com/tserkovnij/ https://www.instagram.com/wanderwood.com.ua https://www.instagram.com/ellenrococo https://www.instagram.com/anna.lisova.jeweller https://www.instagram.com/leonchenko.store

The world met Julian Koster as part of the Elephant 6 Collective in the 1990s, when he played a variety of instruments with Neutral Milk Hotel, Olivia Tremor Control, Elf Power, and his own projects, The Music Tapes and The Orbiting Human Circus. In 2008, he released The Singing Saw at Christmastime, and part of the conceit is that the saws actually do the singing. He's not playing the saws; he's encouraging them to sing. That element of whimsy is part of the fun of Koster's projects and our conversation, though he brought engineer Nesey Gallons on the call with him to be a lifeline when Koster starts to drift too far out.  Our conversation covers some ground, from an unexpected appearance by Leadbelly to a Christmas interlude courtesy of Japanese filmmaker Akira  Kurosawa. Koster and Gallons also turned me on to a Folksways compilation of Ukrainian Christmas songs. The song we hear is "The Miracle of the Birth."

Brian Hastings is only 33 years old but he has already been playing poker at the highest stakes for half of his life and has put together one of the best resumes in the game. The Pennsylvania native discovered poker from his high school math teacher, and by the end of his senior year, he had already amassed a bankroll of more than $250,000.  Hastings then enrolled at Cornell University, simultaneously earning his degree in economics while also helping to run a poker training site and continue his rise up the cash game ranks online. In December of 2009, he famously took on Viktor 'Isildur1' Blom in a record-breaking heads-up pot-limit Omaha match that saw him win $4.18 million.Black Friday forced him into the live arena for the first time, and he responded with his first bracelet win in the 2012 $10,000 Heads-Up Championship. He added two more titles in 2015, taking down the $1,500 Ten-Game Mix and the $10,000 Stud Championship. He was back in the winner's circle in 2018 for the $3,000 H.O.R.S.E. and just this fall, he earned his fifth career bracelet in the $10,000 Stud Hi-Lo Championship.  Hastings is one of just 29 players to have ever won five or more bracelets at the World Series of Poker. He also has a World Poker Tour final table finish under his belt, and he won a WSOP Circuit ring in 2019. The RunItOnce instructor now has more than $4.4 million in live tournament earnings.  Highlights from this interview include an inspirational teacher, big winner on campus, the Ivy League, how banking $4 million can spoil Disney World, sending his parents to Italy, earning his first bracelet, tackling mixed games, lucky baby socks, a $500,000 pot against Patrik Antonius, un-retiring, slinging pizza and waving signs, a Rounders limo to the casino, playing with Paul Pierce, and Ukrainian Christmas.

In this episode , Azed and Jay welcome filmmaker, Sean Cisterna (Kiss and Cry) to discuss their favourite Christmas movies. Sean breaks down his chosen favourite, Gremlins, to reveal the fascinating subtext woven deep in this seemingly benign monster movie. I dag er Henrik, Per og Natalina tilbake igjen. Denne gangen  beveger de tre seg fra den russiskortodokse kirke og til Natalinas hjemland som er Ukraina. Her disukuterer de tre ukrainske juletradisjon. Det kommer mer i morgen!-------Today, Henrik, Per and Natalina are back. This time, the three move from the Russian Orthodox Church to Natalina's home country, Ukraine. Here the three discuss Ukrainian Christmas traditions. One of these include that a little girl puts a hairbrush with some hair under her pillow. After this, she scatters wheat grains on the floor and brings along a black rooster, she does this in order to predict her future. If the aforementioned rooster eats the grains, she will soon be married. If the rooster refuses to eat the grains, she will not get married. There will be more coming tomorrow!
