I'm so excited to have my good buddy Brian White on this week's episode of the Stories Behind the Songs podcast! Brian White's career in music has spanned over many decades and many genres - he got his start in Christian and gospel music and toured for about 15 years doing that. He eventually fell in love with the storytelling of country music and has become a true legend here in Music City. Brian not only has plenty of hits to his name, but he's written more than a few country classics as well. Some of my personal favorite cuts of his that we cover in this episode are “Watching You” released by Rodney Atkins, “Blame It On You” by Jason Aldean and “Roll On Mississippi” by Charley Pride. He also has cuts with Rascal Flatts, Trace Adkins, and Gary Allan and Christian cuts like “Holding Out Hope To You” released by Michael English and “The Promise” by The Martins. In this episode, Brian and I also talk about the difference between CCM and country songwriting, starting out as a youth pastor following God's calling for his life, and, as usual, the stories behind the songs! I've wanted to have Brian on the podcast for a longtime - in a lot of ways, he is a big reason that The Listening Room is where it is today. He was the one who organized the fundraiser in the early days when we were struggling that was a turning point for us and in turn also played a role in inspiring our "Sound Good. Do Good." program that gives back to non-profits every month. If you enjoyed this episode, make sure to share it with your friends and give us a follow. It's our mission to share the Stories Behind the Songs and highlight the songwriters behind the stories, and it's because of listeners like YOU that we are able to do it. On this week's episode of Stories Behind the Songs, we have the incredibly talented songwriter, Marla Cannon-Goodman. Marla is more than a seasoned songwriter as she has had a very productive career that began with her first cut for Sammy Kershaw in 1996. She grew up in the industry, writing poems since she was young, and learning from her dad - Buddy Cannon - who is also an iconic songwriter/producer. She's written “The Fool”, Lee Ann Womack's #1 hit, “Ten Rounds with Jose Cuervo” by Tracy Byrd, and “Cleaning This Gun” by Rodney Atkins. She tells us the full stories behind these songs while also touching on her cut with Blake Shelton, "Don't Make Me.” She's going to take us through writing "Unfair Weather Friend" for Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard, how those two were going back and forth on who would get to cut the song, and how the song ended up staying with both of them on their "Django and Jimmie" duet album. Over the last year, Marla has played and told some of these stories at the Listening Room quite a few times and we loved getting to dive even deeper today. She also shares unique insights into the evolution of music and reflects on being the daughter of someone like Buddy Cannon and how that affected her journey. If you enjoyed this episode, give us a follow and check out Marla's socials to stay up to date with what she's working on. Delete most of those damn tracks before you mix! Billy talked about narrowing the drum and guitar mics down to the essentials for mixing, his vocal chain, bass eq roll-off, designing the perfect mixing chain plugins, and how mixing mono can help you. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Billy Decker aka The Deckerator is an award winning Nashville mixing engineer known for his efficient and effective mixing method.  He's mixed 16 Billboard #1”s to date such as Dustin Lynch's “Riding Roads” and notable artists as Sam Hunt, Chris Young, Rodney Atkins, Parmalee, Colt Ford, and the metal band Starset to name just a few. He also mixed George Jones's last album before he passed. Billy Decker made history in July of 2014 when Sam Hunt became the most added new artist of all time.  Decker works in a unique way. “I mix really fast. Most of my mixes are finished within an hour. To be able to do this, I use a lot of templates in pro tools. Instead of spending two hours EQing a kick drum I can do it in thirty seconds, because I have set up templates for the album that outline all the basic parameters for each instrument. In this episode, Laura and Tracy sit down with songwriter, producer and publisher Luke Laird. Luke talks the magic of writers' rounds, being reluctant to ask for help, letting go of jealousy and the nitty gritty details of his early publishing deals. Laura also shares the story of a pivotal moment that lead to her being a songwriter. Ferocious talent, wit, and sincere humility rarely come together like they do in Grammy winner Luke Laird. Since moving to Nashville from a small farming town in Pennsylvania, Laird has become one of country and pop's top songwriters and producers. The numbers are staggering: 52 radio singles –– 24 of which were Billboard No. 1 hits and 5 of which were in the Top 5 –– 2 Billboard No. 1 singles as a producer, and more than 125 released cuts fill his catalog. In four separate years, every single released that Laird wrote peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard charts. He earned ACM Songwriter of the Year honors in 2015, and was named BMI Songwriter of the Year in 2012.   As a producer, Laird has helped shape some of music's most critically acclaimed projects of the last decade. He co-produced Kacey Musgraves' 2013 debut, Same Trailer, Different Park, which garnered Grammy honors for Best Country Album and an ACM Album of the Year win. In 2015, he returned to the studio with Musgraves to co-produce her triumphant sophomore release, Pageant Material. Laird earned his second Grammy for Best Country Song with Musgraves' “Space Cowboy” in 2019. He also has producer credits on Thomas Rhett, Ingrid Michaelson, Brett Eldredge, Steve Moakler, Everette, Kassi Ashton, Anna Vaus and more.   A slew of Grammy, ACM, CMA, and other nominations line Laird's resume, which also includes six CMA Triple Play Awards, four NSAI “Songs I Wish I'd Written” Awards, the 2012 BMI Country Song of the Year trophy for Rodney Atkins' “Take a Back Road,” and more. His list of No. 1 singles reads like a carefully curated playlist of soulful contemporary country: “Hard To Forget” (Sam Hunt); “Fast” and “I See You” (Luke Bryan); “Head Over Boots” (Jon Pardi); “T-Shirt” (Thomas Rhett); “Gonna” and “Hillbilly Bone” (Blake Shelton); “Talladega,” “Give Me Back My Hometown,” and “Drink In My Hand” (Eric Church); “American Kids” (Kenny Chesney); “Sunshine & Whiskey” (Frankie Ballard); “One of Those Nights” (Tim McGraw); “Downtown” (Lady Antebellum); “Somebody's Heartbreak” (Hunter Hayes); “Beat This Summer” (Brad Paisley); “Pontoon” (Little Big Town); “You” (Chris Young); “A Little Bit Stronger” (Sara Evans); “Take A Back Road” (Rodney Atkins); and “Temporary Home,” “Undo It,” “So Small,” and “Last Name” (Carrie Underwood).   Other artists who have recorded Laird-penned songs represent a jaw-dropping grab bag of genres: George Strait, Maren Morris, Dierks Bentley, Miranda Lambert, Brandy Clark, Toby Keith, Jake Owen, Steve Moakler, Sister Hazel, Ingrid Michaelson, Ashley Monroe, Sam Hunt, Angaleena Presley, Nikki Lane, Darius Rucker, Jason Aldean, Sheryl Crow, Brett Eldredge, Florida Georgia Line, Ne-Yo, Neal McCoy, Amy Grant, and many more.   Laird recently released his own record, Music Row, that offers an intimate look into his journey from Hartstown to Nashville. The first-ever record from one of music's most trusted creators and collaborators, Music Row is a songwriter's story, traversing childhood, grief, addiction, family, and the community he loves. The songs are deeply personal and sometimes raw, all delivered by the songwriter himself.   Today, Laird writes for and co-owns Nashville-based publishing and management company Creative Nation with his wife, Beth.   Learn more about your ad choices. Trading traditional, flat countryside pastures for impeccable mountainscapes, dry desert richness, and gleaming strip lights, Siena is a neon cowgirl from none other than Las Vegas. Siena's rodeo stage is set, having already shared it with Rascal Flatts, Big & Rich, and Rodney Atkins, to name a few. These artists also are her influences along with modern country music icons like Carrie Underwood and Kasey Musgraves. Unlike most artists her age, she moves away from modern country-pop and dives more into her roots of 2000s country, in both her music and fashion. With a bolo tie resting confidently around her neck and a wide-brim hat shading her eyes, Siena is an artist the twenty-first century has yet to see. To her, being an artist means spreading positivity and encouragement like the west coast sunshine. In this conversation, we discuss her work with Don Miggs, her journey to becoming a country artist, and why it's important to remain authentic.Stay Connected with SienaInstagram.com/sienamusic •tiktok.com/@sienapaglia •facebook.com/sienapaglia •www.sienapaglia.com/———

The 2017 album came six years after his full-length debut, Reason to Rhyme, announcing a promising talent in a bro-country vein, but boom. was fresh and fused modern R&B, contemporary country, hip-hop, and rock, announcing a distinctive talent. Hayes consolidated this breakthrough with the clever "Fancy Like," which reached number one on Billboard's Country charts in 2021, a hit that was the cornerstone of his third record, Country Stuff the Album.Hayes is a native of Mobile, Alabama. Born on December 27, 1979, he grew up in Mobile, dividing his time between music and sports as a child and teenager. He wound up earning a music degree from Alabama's Birmingham-Southern College, then attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He and his wife moved to Nashville in 2005 with dreams of him becoming a professional musician. He signed a song publishing deal, and then, on the strength of a demo he recorded for Keith Urban, Hayes inked a deal with Mercury before quickly moving to Capitol Records. He released his debut single, "Pants," in 2010, which wound up reaching 60 on the Hot Country Songs chart. The full-length Reason to Rhyme followed in 2011, but it didn't chart. Over the next few years, Hayes worked as a songwriter, landing placements with Colt Ford and Rodney Atkins in 2014. Capitol dropped him, so he worked at Costco and continued to write, releasing the single "Pimpin' Joy" to little attention in 2014. Shane McAnally signed him to SMACK/RareSpark in 2016, leading him to release two EPs -- 8Tracks, Vol. 1: Good Shit and 8Tracks, Vol. 2: Break the Internet -- that year. Hayes landed a contract with Monument in 2017, which released "You Broke Up with Me" that year. www.GaryScottThomas.com

James has become a fixture on the Billboard Country chart with thirteen #1 songs and scores of top 20 singles to his credit. In 2009, Brett achieved the Music Row “Triple Play,” an award for three #1 songs in a single chart year, not once, but twice! These six #1‘s; ‘It's America,' by Rodney Atkins, ‘Out Last Night,' by Kenny Chesney, ‘Cowboy Cassanova,' by Carrie Underwood, ‘Summer Nights,' by Rascal Flatts, ‘The Truth' by Jason Aldean, and ‘The Man I Want To Be' Chris Young earned James ASCAP Songwriter of the Year for the second time in October 2010.A native of Oklahoma City, Brett attended Baylor University, where he completed two years of medical school before moving to Nashville to pursue his dream of becoming a country star. In 1995, Brett James was signed to the Arista subsidiary Career Records and subsequently released his self-titled debut album. Career Records was later dissolved in consolidation, and with it, James's recording artist aspirations. Brett persevered as a writer at Patrick Joseph Publishing which fostered the relationships that destined him for success. In the year 2000, James received his first major album cut with the song ‘Love Is A Sweet Thing,' recorded by Faith Hill, followed by a top 20 single ‘You Won't Be Lonely Now,' with Billy Ray Cyrus. It wasn't long before Brett reached the benchmark that all songwriters and artists alike strive for, the coveted #1 song. In April of 2001, then-break-out artist Jessica Andrews landed James his first #1 with the song ‘Who I Am.' He returned to the top of the chart in 2002, this time with country superstar Martina McBride and the song ‘Blessed.'As his chart success continued, Brett appeared on Billboard Magazine's top-ten country songwriters list for five consecutive years, the only writer to do so, and in 2006 reached yet another musical milestone winning ASCAP Songwriter of the Year. In 2007, Brett received the music industry's highest honor winning the Grammy Award for Best Country Song ‘Jesus Take The Wheel,' recorded by Carrie Underwood. The list of artists that have recorded songs penned by Brett James resembles a who's who in the country music list but also straddles genre lines into American and world pop music. Some notable pop artists to record James' songs include Kelly Clarkson, Jon Bon Jovi, Daughtry, The Backstreet Boys, Chicago, and Leona Lewis. Brett has also scored #1 songs in Europe and a worldwide top 5 Latin hit with the song ‘Todo Mi Amor' recorded by Paulina Rubio. Outside the writer's room, Brett's talents have earned production credits that include Taylor Swift, Jessica Simpson, Josh Gracin, and MCA recording artist Kip Moore whose single “Somethin' ‘Bout a Truck” was a breakthrough smash in 2012!https://www.facebook.com/BrettJamesSongswww.GaryScottThomas.com
