Championed over the years by the likes of Americana superstar Scott Avett and music mogul Seymour Stein, the music of Clem Snide mainstay Eef Barzelay has become an optimistic, yet matter-of-fact touchstone in a weary world, whether crafting his own musings or covering the inspirational hits of Journey. NPR dubs him "the most underrated songwriter in the business today, with a sneakily firm grasp on poignancy and humor," and while Eef's evocative tone is of a similar caliber to Jeff Mangum or John Darnielle, his sentimental and visual lyricism puts him in a unique category. On this week's program, Eef discusses embracing the unknown, diving back into vinyl with his adult son, and the quandary of carrying on the Clem Snide moniker. Plus, a run-in with a New Jersey state trooper while shooting the album cover for 1999's Your Favorite Music. Eef hits the road later this month; tour dates and tickets are available at clemsni.de. His latest album Oh Smokey is available digitally, or on vinyl from foreignleisure.com. Follow @clemsnidemusic on Instagram.

What a beautiful face we have found in this place.. it's the face of a tambourine! We're entering the Year Of Discovery on a strong note and talking about In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, the second and final album by the mysterious and eclectic Neutral Milk Hotel. This cult classic record is a sonic journey through Jeff Mangum's haunted carnival of lucid dreams and WWII imagery, with a little bit (lotta bit?) of Anne Frank sprinkled throughout. We'll explore goopy, disjointed lyrics, innovative distortion techniques, singing saws, and more as we head back to Holland, 1945. The Mixtaper is teaching us about donkey cheese and expensive chess in another installment of Foxtrot Oscar Sierra! From those red lips to the Two-Headed Boy, we hit it all this week! In our first full episode of our final season, we sat down with our friend, Will Hines (actor, comedian, podcaster "Screw It, We Are Just Going To Talk About The Beatles"), to talk about Jeff Mangum, Elephant Six, Neutral Milk Hotel and their 1998 album, In The Aeroplane Over The Sea.
Today we have a very special treat for you guys. We had the opportunity to talk to CB Stockfleth, the director of The Elephant 6 Recording Company, the most highly anticipated music documentary by any indie music lover of the 90s and on. He shares with us the origin story of the documentary--from Robert Schneider believing in him to tell their story, to being brought in to the inner circle of the collective, to meeting the man/myth Jeff Mangum. Consider this a little preview into some long awaited stories from some pretty reclusive musicians (from Neutral Milk Hotel, The Olivia Tremor Control, The Apples in Stereo, and more!) that you'll find in The Elephant 6 Recording Company, IN SELECT THEATRES RIGHT NOW (see if it's playing near you here: https://www.elephant6movie.com/) AND STREAMING TO APPLE AND AMAZON PRIME SEPTEMBER 2nd!!!!!!Links:The Elephant 6 Recording Company trailer: https://youtu.be/PCzXf5ZiE3k?si=WWRJZNmSyBt3jKwT"In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" clip: https://youtu.be/cWElzqll2Ls?si=fBU-Mjq3bDZ3-9sfgroup outside LA screening singing "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea together: https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cv1d8mOx5sG/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==Expert explains Green Typewriter section of album: https://www.reddit.com/r/OliviaTremorControl/comments/f151x8/green_typewriters_meaning/OUR DISCORD: https://discord.gg/2stA2P7pTC Flyover State Hotline - 1 608 HIT-NERD (608-448-6373)https://www.youtube.com/flyoverstatepark EVERYTHING ELSE: https://linktr.ee/FlyoverStatePark --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/albumconcepthour/support
Today's episode is about "The Elephant 6 Recording Co." (C.B. Stockfleth, 2023), about the titular record label's roster of wild outsider indie artists such as Neutral Milk Hotel, the Olivia Tremor Control, the Apples In Stereo, Elf Power, the Music Tapes, the Minders, the Gerbils, of Montreal, Beulah, Dressy Bessy, Great Lakes & more. Our Very Special Guest is the legendary Lance Bangs, whose credits are too long to list here, but he's worked with most of your favorite musical artists and all of your favorite Jackasses. The movie is a true audiovisual treat, and Lance was there at the time with these musicians (he was roommates with Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel) and provided much of the film and still photography seen in the movie. So he's the perfect person to shed light on the 90's underground music and art scene in Athens, GA and the making of the movie itself. Plus we discuss the origin of Jackass, his films about Pavement and Slint, and the long and tantalizing list of musicians who Lance has filmed over the years for documentaries we hope to see one day. The Elephant 6 Recording Co. is in US theaters August 25th, 2023 and on VOD September 1 (Amazon & Apple TV) from Greenwich Entertainment. In Canadian Theaters August 25th and VOD September 26th from levelFILM. I love investigating how language is actually used. When you look up these two words they don't seem that different. But in real life they are used really differently. To me, it seems like to be humble you have to have accomplished something and then not be a braggart about it. But meek is more about being a wall flower without an opinion or a voice. Terri Hill made a good point that it is possible to be too humble. If you never talk about your work, no one is going to notice, you won't get promoted. (Is that only a woman thing?) Dr Cole Galloway talked about how oppression, the inability to be heard is different than being humble or meek. Jeff Mangum shared that humility is being mindful of your actions and how they come across to others. But Coach MJ Tolan might have had the best quote, "Being humble is the sexiest cologne you can wear." Where do you think the line is between being humble and being meek? Is it possible to stand your ground and still be humble? "I'm just being authentic" has been used as an excuse for all kinds of bad behavior. It was mentioned in the comment section of another conversation that toddlers are given timeouts for being "authentic" and taught to "use their words" when they need something. So where is the line for adults? When are we too controlled, too tightly regulating what we thing/feel and when are we being over the top and using authenticity as an excuse? Who gets to decide? There doesn't seem to be a hard and fast answer but Jim Shulman (he/him), Sara Oblak Speicher, MBA and Jeff Mangum were willing to have a conversation with me to try to sort it out. What do you think? Where is the line between expressing yourself and being overly dramatic? Barry Birthday Bonanza. Ross' epic Banner Fail. A magical moment featuring Bob Schneider. Special Guest Jeff Mangum gives us the scoop on Mother Nature, David Yeomans, and living legend Jim Spencer.
Adam Clair was barely out of undergrad when he began the manuscript for Endless Endless: A Lo-Fi History of the Elephant 6 Mystery (Hachette Books, 2022).The book is a definitive history of the 1990s underground musical movement known as the Elephant 6 Collective. Founded by Robert Schneider, Bill Doss, Will Cullen Hart, and Jeff Mangum, who grew up as friends in the small town of Ruston, Louisiana, the Elephant 6 was initially centered around three bands—the Apples in Stereo, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Olivia Tremor Control—whose records were expertly produced in home studios in Denver and Athens, Georgia, by Robert Schneider, who wouldn't mind being referred to as the Brian Wilson-like engineer extraordinaire of the collective. (Schneider is currently a professor of math in Georgia, having earned a PhD in his post-rocker years.)By the late-1990s, the Elephant 6 had exploded onto the musical scene in a way that hasn't really been felt since—their '60s psychedelia-inspired, almost utopian mindset of a better world with their music as the soundtrack was as intoxicating then as it is now.Rock ‘n' Roll stardom was something that seemed to frighten and elude the collective's founders, however, who were more focused on the art of the music than on the business side.By the turn of the century, relentless touring and recording schedules led Neutral Milk Hotel's front man Jeff Mangum to retreat from performing—and even from doing interviews. The Olivia's disbanded for a time, the Apples changed line ups, and the second-generation bands, like Of Montreal and Beulah, began to build their own audiences. In 2013, the original members of Neutral Milk Hotel reunited for a year or two of touring. Then Bill Doss from Olivia Tremor Control passed away suddenly, thwarting their comeback. All the while, Adam Clair was gathering reportage. He conducted over 100 interviews over 13 years to complete Endless Endless. Although the reclusive Jeff Mangum did not speak to him for the book, Clair was able to carve in Mangum's voice from past interviews (more than I remember taking place, having been around to see it unfold in real time the first time around). Clair and I spoke recently about Endless Endless and how it came to be. Tune in for all the details. For the Reading this episode, Adam Clair reads from his introduction to Endless Endless.Music by The Olivia Tremor Control
Neutral Milk Hotel released only two studio albums in the mid-to-late 90s, On Avery Island and In An Aeroplane Over the Sea, but they've since been consecrated as quintessential indie rock classics. Emerging from the Elephant 6 musical collective, bandleader Jeff Mangum led this eccentric musical experiment that left much mystery, and a large cult following, in its wake. This week, Wall Street Journal's rock and pop music critic and former editor-in-chief of Pitchfork Mark Richardson to explain Neutral Milk Hotel. Follow Mark Richardson on Twitter at @markrichardson. I am clearly the odd ball in this group. Taking time off, decompressing and not having my brain remind me that there is work piling up is hard for me. Fortunately I had three people on this panel, Jane Dolente, Jeff Mangum and JC Glick, LTC (R), U.S. Army, MA, who had some tips for how they handle it. Although to be fair, I will likely never be as stoic as JC is about it. What about you? How do you get your brain to chill when it's chill time? Jeff Mangum and his fellow Ruston, Louisiana buddies in Elephant 6 had a lot of bands with a lot silly names. Apples in Stereo, Olivia Tremor Control, Cranberry Lifestyle, System Flying Machine, Elf Power... just to name a select few. Of all of these groups, one really captured the imagination of the indie rock world; Neutral Milk Hotel. With the help of schoolyard friend and musical companion Robert Schneider, the recording project that eventually morphed into the four piece we know and love recorded two incredibly beautiful, noisy and influential records, In The Aeroplane Over the Sea and On Avery Island. For authenticity sake, I head down south to record this episode with my old friend Ross Britton. He just happens to own my favorite coffee shop, Izzy's Coffee. Together, we wade through the swamp of mis-told fables surrounding the myth and mystery of Jeff Magnum and Neutral Milk Hotel. I loved the record so much, I performed the whole thing live. Over the course of doing 30 episodes of You, Me and An Album, there have been parts of each conversation that have stuck with me long after the episode got published. There have been a few of those that I continue to think about frequently, because I have been puzzled as to why I had such a different reaction to a song than my guest did. I went back to seven of those songs and gave them several more listens, and on this episode, I talk about what changed in my impression of those songs after giving each of them another chance. Also, given that Ep. 30 was nearly about Hum's You'd Prefer An Astronaut, it felt appropriate to give that episode's guest, Michael Govier, a chance to express his feelings about the life and recent death of Hum drummer Bryan St. Pere.Corrections: I made a couple of Sleater-Kinney-related errors on this show. I referred to their new album, Path of Wellness as “Path To Wellness.” Given that I've had the album on heavy rotation since its release, I'm not sure how I managed to mess that up. Also, I referred to the verse of The Remainder that begins “There is an absolute zero” as the second verse, but it's the third verse.0:18 The premise of this episode1:32 How Rebecca Clay Cole's encounter with Jeff Mangum has helped to inform my music listening Revisiting previously-discussed tracks (including excerpts from guests on previous episodes)4:26 Kinks, Waterlook Sunset (Ed Masley)8:54 Sleater-Kinney, The Remainder (Mariana Timony)13:24 Frank Ocean, Nikes (Andrew Brown)17:16 Neutral Milk Hotel, Holland, 1945 (Eric Gilde)22:02 John Cale, Darling I Need You (Mike Lord)26:33 Oasis, Slide Away (Kevin Brown)30:32 Built to Spill, Time Trap (Michael Govier) 34:16 Some music requires even more patience than I thought, but it's worth it35:40 What are your experiences with not “getting” certain albums?37:08 Michael Govier's tribute to Bryan St. Pere Find Al on Twitter at: @almelchiorBB and @youmealbum. New episode Bagpipe alert. Somehow we have a really long episode about a band with only two official studio albums. Although one of those albums is very very critically acclaimed. (Though not by all of us) We've only gone and done NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL. We discuss, Charlie Sheen vs Emilio Estevez, outsider art, Jeff Mangum and his obsession with Anne Frank, and brass instruments that sound drunk. Also Nick gets very very angry!! Re-joining Nick and Ewan are Norway's finest stand-up comedian Aaron Troye-White, and the man who gave us the best of our Bowie impressions back in season one, Lael Wageneck. Today we have perhaps the greatest (and possibly only) indie-lofi-folk-punk all star team up of all time (change my mind). To start off we have Neutral Milk Hotel frontman Jeff Mangum singing so simple and sweet... followed by fellow Neutral Milk alum, and master of the musical saw, Julian Koster, and their producer from "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea", and inventor of the non-Pythagorean pitch scale, Robert Schneider. The last had nothing to do with Neutral Milk, but was important to indie folk at the time: Kevin Barnes from a little band called Of Montreal. They were all part of the Elephant 6 Collective, an indie record label that produced much of the indie-lofi-folk-punk from the 90s to 00s. In 2001, after the unexpected success of "In the Aeroplane...", Mangum and the gang decided to take a step back from conventional songwriting, and create something truly conceptual & out there, and very psychedelic. It was a soundtrack for a movie that didn't yet exist. And the movie was a trip. With the short film of the album release in 2008, you gleaned some context, but overall, for both iterations there's a lot to unpack. I definitely recommend watching the short film in the description if at any point you are lost with what we're saying... Neutral Milk Hotel's In The Aeroplane Over The Sea from 1998... I mean, there's life before having heard this album, and then life after it. I suspect Jeff Mangum is actually some wizardly music spirit, rather than simply a 90s indie pop recluse. Safe to say, both myself and pod friend Thin Lear had lots of kind things to say about it. This week, Steven and Ian are once again taking questions from listeners. One listener was interested in exploring the place of CDs in the modern music industry, both in terms of audio quality, as well as the best method of listening. The result is a spirited conversation about how CDs compare in quality to that of streaming and vinyl, and the sense of ownership that comes with holding in your hand a physical manifestation of music. Is there anything quite like gathering a stack of CDs to take on a road trip?Of course, an episode of Indiecast wouldn’t be complete without a chance for Cohen to sing his praises about emo bands, this week focusing on 'Ground Aswim,' the latest from Sinai Vessel. The record hasn’t been getting much mainstream attention this year, which begs the question of what it really means for an album to be “slept on” in 2020.In this week’s Recommendation Corner, Cohen is recommending new albums from Soul Glo and Record Setter, while Hyden can’t get enough of the latest from David Nance.Sign up for the Indie Mixtape newsletter at uproxx.com/indie

The Indie Dads end the season by visiting one of the great sacred cows of indie music with Neutral Milk Hotel's phenomenal 1997 album "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea". This bumper-length episode explores in depth this masterpiece and its exploration of the Holocaust and sexuality, alongside all the puerile jokes and strange comparisons you've come to expect from your ageing hosts.
Very few bands can claim the influence and legendary status as Athens, Georgia's Neutral Milk Hotel. While the band released just a pair of records, an EP, and single in their ten years, 1998's In The Aeroplane Over The Sea has grown from critically appreciated to cult status over the past two decades. With enough distance from the release, it's easy to see why, as 2000s bands such as The Decemberists, Arcade Fire, Beruit, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and more picked-up on the lo-fi, psychedlic sounds that countered the late 90s/early 00s mainstream push of processed and packaged third-generation grunge, comically aggressive nu-metal, and sanitized pop-punk. Maybe the mystique was assisted by the long step out of the spotlight by singer/songwriter Jeff Mangum, who has never attempted a follow-up. Did he make his magnum opus, or was there nowhere else to go? Song In This Episode: Intro - Two-Headed Boy 24:23 - King Of Carrot Flowers Pts. 2 & 3 39:03 - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea 46:22 - [Untitled] Outro - Holland, 1945 Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. Nostalgia, rebellion and falling in love. The sun, the moon, the ocean and Anne Frank. The folklore surrounding Neutral Milk Hotel's "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" is overshadowed only by the childlike impossibility of singer/songwriter Jeff Mangum's lyrics. This week, Sam tells Dave what this album means to him. ***formerly I Love You, Music #1***
Today, we focus on R.E.M.'s polarizing yet passionate ninth album from 1994, Monster. Craft Recordings just released a 25th anniversary package available on 1LP, 2LP, 2CD or 5CD/1Blu-Ray formats, available at remhq.com or wherever you buy music. Growing up, renowned visual artist Chris Bilheimer's first introduction to what record covers looked like was -- serendipitously -- by staring at R.E.M.'s early classics like Murmur. In his words, he's since spent his career "stumbling into little tiny pockets of music history," creating landmark album artwork for iconic groups like Neutral Milk Hotel, Weezer and Green Day. Since the mid-90's, Chris has been R.E.M.'s official in-house art director, collaborating directly with frontman Michael Stipe on new releases, deluxe reissues, compilation packages and more. Today, Chris shares some remarkable stories about rebuilding the Monster artwork from scratch for this re-release, how stacks of portfolios containing original R.E.M. cover art were nearly lost forever, working with Jeff Mangum on the visuals for In The Aeroplane Over The Sea and how Chris' design for American Idiot may have helped save a child's life. Visit bilheimer.com to get a snapshot of his work through the years. In 2002, trailblazing music journalist Matthew Perpetua started Fluxblog, one of the web's first MP3 blogs, setting the course for how artists were discovered and music would be consumed in the 21st century. Since then, he's become a music editor for BuzzFeed and a contributing writer to outlets like Pitchfork and Rolling Stone. In this episode, Matthew details his first memories of R.E.M., why he was particularly chosen to contribute liner notes to the Monster anniversary project and how this record makes more sense in 2019 than it may have in 1994. Keep up with Matthew via fluxblog.org or Twitter, @perpetua.
A talk with the former guitarist of the band Of Montreal, Marshmallow Coast, and The Music Tapes. We discuss his start in music, joining the Elephant 6 Collective, playing with Neutral Milk Hotel, meeting Jeff Mangum, and much more!
At the beginning of 1998, Jeff Mangum released his masterwork, "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea," now one of the all-time indie records. But by year's end, he would walk away from music, only to be heard from on rare occasion for the next two decades. In today's episode, we discuss how to create distortion without an electric guitar, why Mangum was completely derailed by Anne Frank's diary, and why I've changed my tune about Neutral Milk Hotel. Kind of. My King of Carrot Flowers, D.J. Piehowski, guests.
Neutral Milk Hotel released their second album in 1998 before going on indefinite hiatus. In the years since, it has had a massive impact on the music that would follow it. It is also one of the most divisive albums of the last thirty years. Hear Greg's reaction after Daniel introduces him to the most challenging piece of music he's played yet on the show. They all shared music cassettes in their younger days and made music together. Jim McIntyre and Hilarie Sydney of Apples in Stereo made up the final tally. They all started several pet projects which ended up under the umbrella of Elephant 6. Doss and Hart with The Olivia Tremor Control, Mangum with Neutral Milk Hotel and Schneider with Apples in Stereo. Collectively they held admiration for music from the 1960s. In particular The Beach Boys, often stating the then unfinished Smile as "The Holy Grail". Mangum disbanded Neutral Milk Hotel after an extensive European tour in 1998 cited ill health as one of the reasons. His bandmates were keen to capitalise on the albums success. However, Mangum was tired of performing and explaining his lyrics. Because of this Mangum turned down an opportunity to open for R.E.M. Mangum suffered a nervous breakdown at the time. Interviewed in 2002 he stated that it was unlikely that he would record as Neutral Milk Hotel in the future. I just feel like these windows open up for something to be honest, and they don't stay open for very long. I guess my path feels sort of different nowJeff Mangum speaking to Pitchfork in February 2002 In the Aeroplane Over the Sea - sophomore album from Neutral Milk Hotel Whilst working on the album Avery Island he read The Diary of a Young Girl. The diary written by Anne Frank whilst in hiding from the Nazi occupation. The diary was famously and posthumously published to great acclaim. Mangum was deeply affected by the diary, he spent "about three days crying" after reading it. He also dreamed of travelling back in time to save her. The track Ghost played here was a reference to Frank and to a ghost Mangum believed lived in his house. He believed the ghost kept waking him in the night. Oh Comely (8+ minutes) was recorded in one take. At the end of the track you can hear an astonished bandmate cry "Holy shit" in amazement. On the final track, Two Headed Boy Part II, Mangum can be heard setting down his guitar and walking away. At the end of Aeroplane's final song, you can hear Jeff Mangum [...] set down his guitar and walk off, and [...] that's exactly what Mangum did in real lifeSlate Other avenues to explore Get brilliant music/TV/film based t-shirts hereCheck out where our Listeners are around the globe hereTake a look at what our Listeners are saying hereSupport our work hereGet social on Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr and Facebook

Jeff Mangum works through Luke 19 and shows how Jesus displayed His power through His kingship.
Jeff Mangum show us in Mark 5 how Jesus shows His power through setting the captive free and how we are released by sin's grip through His power.
Jeff Mangum speaks on Mark 4:35-41 and shows how Jesus is always in control, even in the harshest of storms.
Neutral Milk Hotel two albums surely cast a long shadow on all involved. Multi-instrumentalist Julian Koster has never shied away from his role in the band — both reuniting with the group and supporting frontman Jeff Mangum in recent years — but all the while the musician has been building a singular body of work all his own, both as a solo artist and through his on-going project, the Music Tapes. For anyone who’s seen the latter in a live setting, it’s clear that Koster is, above all, a storyteller. The band act features a seven-foot-tall metronome and a talking tube television. It’s a living circus built around strange tales and Koster’s songs — very much a product of the Elephant 6 Collective from which it sprung, while remaining uniquely his own. When it was first announced that Koster was working on a podcast with the team behind Welcome to Nightvale, it was clearly serendipity. Three episodes in, podcasting has proven the perfect medium for the musician’s world building, manifesting itself as a sort of classic radio drama beamed from the top of the Eiffel Tower. It’s idiosyncratic and fascinating, a perfect encapsulation of what Koster does best. And yes, he wore the hat.
Jeff Mangum leads us through Matthew 7 and Philippians 1-2 on perseverance and platform in spite of trials.
Truth time: Truthcast Hi guys! In this podcast we talk about some of the awesome and not-so-awesome things that have been going on in our lives lately. One awesome thing being Grace having moved to Denver via an amazing road trip together one year ago. We saw over 2,000 miles of America and we tell you a little about that; including being rejected by Wayne Coyne’s Womb and falling into the streets of Nashville laughing about Jeff Mangum and Anne Frank. We also touch upon a few hard times we’ve been having due to real life and the like, but this is life, so you have to learn to laugh about it.
On today's show, I talk to musician Will Cullen Hart. Will grew up all over the US, but it was living in Louisiana that truly made him who he is, because that's where he met Bill Doss, Jeff Mangum and Robert Schneider and formed the Elephant Six Recording Company, as well as The Olivia Tremor Control with Doss. It's not hyperbole to say that the bands that were part of Elephant Six: Neutral Milk Hotel, The Apples in Stereo, the aforementioned OTC, as well as other bands like Of Montreal, Beulah and Elf Power came to define a generation of music-listeners. After OTC broke up, Will formed psyche-pop band The Circulatory System, and while it was revealed in 2008 that he suffers from multiple sclerosis, this has not slowed him down - his latest album Mosaics Within Mosaics was released earlier this year, and it is wonderful.
