The Governor has proposed a $83.5 billion spending plan for the state. MIRS sits down with Robert Schneider, a senior research associate for the Citizens Research Council of Michigan, to talk about it. With President Donald Trump's aspirations to cut down federal spending, should the Governor and lawmakers start drafting their own "Plan Bs" for state spending? (4:38). Also last week, MIRS caught up with Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, who's running for governor as an independent. He's excited about the Detroit Regional Chamber's polling on the potential of independent candidates in the '26 elections (26:12). Executive Director Dominick Pallone of the Michigan Association of Health Plans comes on as well. He talks about Medicaid, why healthcare costs rise and the expensive effects of weight loss drugs in the insurance world (40:28).
This off-the-cuff interview with Robert Schneider, which went down spontaneously after our Strawberry Alarm Clock conversation concluded, unexpectedly became a tidal wave of incredibly moving, impassioned notions about identity and fulfillment. And although it preceded Will Cullen Hart's untimely passing, much of it seems to pre-empt the tragic event lying in wait just around the bend. Here's just a few of the many things Robert and I discuss in this podcast: The superfluousness of LSD to the middle-aged brain; The levels of fulfillment Robert gets from music vs. math at this point in his life; The background origin story of the Elephant 6 Enthusiasts Facebook Group; How his musical path will likely look just around the bend; The massive impact Bill Doss's death had on his identity; And Robert's favorite Apples In Stereo LP. In the final days of Michigan's Democratic trifecta, should lawmakers take up labor reform surrounding post-injury workers' compensation and unemployment benefits? MIRS talks to state Sen. John Cherry, a Flint Democrat, about the changes that are being considered (1:56). Also, Robert Schneider of Michigan's Citizens Research Council and Lisa Kats, an entrepreneurship consultant, report that Michigan is lagging behind its peers when it comes to nurturing a successful innovation and entrepreneurship environment in the state (19:07). MIRS additionally talks to Michael Alaimo of the Michigan Chamber of Commerce and Rich Bowman of the Nature Conservancy. They want a state regulatory system for storing carbon dioxide emissions (42:19)
Talking with Robert Schneider is like riding a rollercoaster that's not quite tethered to its track—with all the thrills an experience like that portends, and none of the danger. Needless to say, collaborating with him on this show has been one of the most invigorating experiences of my life. Here's just some of the many things Robert and I touch on in this podcast: An imagined series of reasonings to explain why The Strawberry Alarm Clock would choose to leapfrog from string-laden hippie elevator music to blues rock; An incredibly intimate rendering of a “Good Morning Starshine”-based jingle that served as young Robert's very first hit; And wildly caffeinated rundowns of the Good Morning Starshine LP, not to mention (in a Director's Cut exclusive) the slew of incredible 45s that marked the end of the line for the band! On April 14, 2018, at Jackpot! Recording Studio, I interviewed Robert Schneider in front of a live audience. Afterwards, he did a short solo set, and then The Minders played – a band both of us had recorded albums for and are friends with. Robert and I first met in 1996, when I interviewed him and The Apples In Stereo for Tape Op #2. Alongside some classic Apples and The Minders albums and other projects he's in, he recorded and produced records for Neutral Milk Hotel [#11] and The Olivia Tremor Control [#17] and co-founded The Elephant 6 Recording Co. (See the wonderful The Elephant 6 Recording Co. documentary that we are both in). Now, with his recently attained Doctorate in mathematics, we sat down in front of a live audience to chat again! Adam Clair was barely out of undergrad when he began the manuscript for Endless Endless: A Lo-Fi History of the Elephant 6 Mystery (Hachette Books, 2022).The book is a definitive history of the 1990s underground musical movement known as the Elephant 6 Collective. Founded by Robert Schneider, Bill Doss, Will Cullen Hart, and Jeff Mangum, who grew up as friends in the small town of Ruston, Louisiana, the Elephant 6 was initially centered around three bands—the Apples in Stereo, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Olivia Tremor Control—whose records were expertly produced in home studios in Denver and Athens, Georgia, by Robert Schneider, who wouldn't mind being referred to as the Brian Wilson-like engineer extraordinaire of the collective. (Schneider is currently a professor of math in Georgia, having earned a PhD in his post-rocker years.)By the late-1990s, the Elephant 6 had exploded onto the musical scene in a way that hasn't really been felt since—their '60s psychedelia-inspired, almost utopian mindset of a better world with their music as the soundtrack was as intoxicating then as it is now.Rock ‘n' Roll stardom was something that seemed to frighten and elude the collective's founders, however, who were more focused on the art of the music than on the business side.By the turn of the century, relentless touring and recording schedules led Neutral Milk Hotel's front man Jeff Mangum to retreat from performing—and even from doing interviews. The Olivia's disbanded for a time, the Apples changed line ups, and the second-generation bands, like Of Montreal and Beulah, began to build their own audiences. In 2013, the original members of Neutral Milk Hotel reunited for a year or two of touring. Then Bill Doss from Olivia Tremor Control passed away suddenly, thwarting their comeback. All the while, Adam Clair was gathering reportage. He conducted over 100 interviews over 13 years to complete Endless Endless. Although the reclusive Jeff Mangum did not speak to him for the book, Clair was able to carve in Mangum's voice from past interviews (more than I remember taking place, having been around to see it unfold in real time the first time around). Clair and I spoke recently about Endless Endless and how it came to be. Tune in for all the details. For the Reading this episode, Adam Clair reads from his introduction to Endless Endless.Music by The Olivia Tremor Control

Jersey Baseball Show - powered by NJ College Baseball Nation
Millburn HS is home to one of the top baseball programs in New Jersey, and with a talented core including juniors Steven Echavarria and Robert Schneider, the Millers are going for their third state Group 3 title in seven seasons. We sit down today with Schneider, the smooth shortstop who always seems to be in the right place at the right time and has a deserved reputation as Pitcher's Best Friend, as well as Echavarria, the Pac-12 commit, headed to Oregon with a fastball that lives in the low to mid 90s. Learn about both great players on this episode of JBS - and see why both Rob and I are jealous of Steve - it has nothing to do with baseball and everything to do food. If you see us refer to Steve as "The Godfadda" after this, you'll understand.

Jeff Mangum and his fellow Ruston, Louisiana buddies in Elephant 6 had a lot of bands with a lot silly names. Apples in Stereo, Olivia Tremor Control, Cranberry Lifestyle, System Flying Machine, Elf Power... just to name a select few. Of all of these groups, one really captured the imagination of the indie rock world; Neutral Milk Hotel. With the help of schoolyard friend and musical companion Robert Schneider, the recording project that eventually morphed into the four piece we know and love recorded two incredibly beautiful, noisy and influential records, In The Aeroplane Over the Sea and On Avery Island. For authenticity sake, I head down south to record this episode with my old friend Ross Britton. He just happens to own my favorite coffee shop, Izzy's Coffee. Together, we wade through the swamp of mis-told fables surrounding the myth and mystery of Jeff Magnum and Neutral Milk Hotel. I loved the record so much, I performed the whole thing live. Welcome back to "A Few More Minutes on The Steve Keene Art Book." We last spoke with Daniel Efram, the producer of the book. He explained how Keene was deeply embedded in the '90s music scene, first in Charlottesville, and later in New York. The eclectic music community embraced the artist, his vision and unique process. Efram has called him the most prolific painter in American history. He also pointed us to a unique testimonial by a well known voice in alternative music and a huge supporter of Keene's and the book project. We'll let Robert take it from here…

Today we have perhaps the greatest (and possibly only) indie-lofi-folk-punk all star team up of all time (change my mind). To start off we have Neutral Milk Hotel frontman Jeff Mangum singing so simple and sweet... followed by fellow Neutral Milk alum, and master of the musical saw, Julian Koster, and their producer from "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea", and inventor of the non-Pythagorean pitch scale, Robert Schneider. The last had nothing to do with Neutral Milk, but was important to indie folk at the time: Kevin Barnes from a little band called Of Montreal. They were all part of the Elephant 6 Collective, an indie record label that produced much of the indie-lofi-folk-punk from the 90s to 00s. In 2001, after the unexpected success of "In the Aeroplane...", Mangum and the gang decided to take a step back from conventional songwriting, and create something truly conceptual & out there, and very psychedelic. It was a soundtrack for a movie that didn't yet exist. And the movie was a trip. With the short film of the album release in 2008, you gleaned some context, but overall, for both iterations there's a lot to unpack. I definitely recommend watching the short film in the description if at any point you are lost with what we're saying... This week, it's celebrating a few things; the 15th anniversary of Neko Case's Fox Confessor Brings The Flood, Robert Schneider's 50th birthday, and me buying a car. Celebrate good times. Come on.
On today's show, I talk to musician Will Cullen Hart. Will grew up all over the US, but it was living in Louisiana that truly made him who he is, because that's where he met Bill Doss, Jeff Mangum and Robert Schneider and formed the Elephant Six Recording Company, as well as The Olivia Tremor Control with Doss. It's not hyperbole to say that the bands that were part of Elephant Six: Neutral Milk Hotel, The Apples in Stereo, the aforementioned OTC, as well as other bands like Of Montreal, Beulah and Elf Power came to define a generation of music-listeners. After OTC broke up, Will formed psyche-pop band The Circulatory System, and while it was revealed in 2008 that he suffers from multiple sclerosis, this has not slowed him down - his latest album Mosaics Within Mosaics was released earlier this year, and it is wonderful.
