For this excursion into something besides movies, in case you didn't know, I once hosted Voices & Visions and I would recruit friend and Austin-based journalist Dan Solomon to go back 20 years to talk about a year in music - an art form that I love every bit much as film. For this summer tradition, my guests and I curate a new list of ten favorite records from a favorite year, playing snippets of certain songs and discussing our feelings about music in general. As of 2021, I decided to include my friend Jason Simpson, also a writer, to join us in this endeavor, he's back to experience the fun as well. As listeners know, I've been going back 30 years to talk about the year in film with Collin Souter and Erik Childress, so I asked Jason and Dan to do the same from now on with records. Hopefully everyone enjoys this discussion about our favorite records from 1994. It was such a blast sharing memories with dear friends from high school as well as getting to hear a lot of incredible music from the mid-90s. Next year, we have a makeup homework assignment: the year 1999, which we missed.  If you want to hear the older episodes of the music retrospective, they are now archived below as well. Thank you so much for listening and much gratitude to Dan & Jay for their insights, opinions and a 30-year plus friendship. Nine years ago, Dolores Lozano claims she was violently assaulted by a Baylor football player and her boyfriend at the time. In 2016 she filed a lawsuit against the university, claiming that – despite having gone to administrators and football program leaders – her alma mater had been negligent in its handling of her reports of domestic violence and, as a result, violated her rights under the Title IX federal civil rights law. On Tuesday, a Waco jury found Baylor liable. It's the only Title IX case to go before a jury and reach this verdict and involved the testimonies of former Baylor head football coach Art Briles and former Baylor athletic director Ian McCaw. The decision comes just weeks after Baylor settled the largest case of the scandal: a 2016 federal lawsuit brought by 15 women who alleged they were sexually assaulted. Now that the trial has wrapped, let's talk with the reporter who has been covering this beat since 2015.Dan Solomon is a senior editor at Texas Monthly, where he has covered topics from the Baylor sexual assault scandal to the gentrification of Austin barbecue to the legacy of Texas outsider artist Daniel Johnston. BIO: Dan Solomon is on a mission to help international students and young professionals, especially those in Germany and the Netherlands, gain the right skills to succeed in the job market. STORY: When Dan was studying in Russia, he would receive $500 every month from his scholarship. Dan never invested a single cent of this money for the five years he was in Russia, which regrettably would have grown to a substantial amount had he invested it. LEARNING: Start investing now to gain from compounding interest. Don't spend your dividends or interest; reinvest it.   “Invest, and don't take out your gains.”Dan Solomon  Guest profilehttps://www.linkedin.com/in/dansolomonpc/ (Dan Solomon) has a diverse background in engineering, business, and finance with experience across several industries, including banking, consulting, and chemical. He is on a mission to help international students and young professionals, especially those in Germany and the Netherlands, gain the right skills they need to succeed in the job market. He is a strong believer in taking little steps towards making the world a better place. Worst investment everDan spent five years studying in Russia on a scholarship. For those five years, he would receive $500 per month. Dan was a bit flamboyant and spent all that money on things that didn't really mean anything. He bought stuff he didn't have to buy. Dan regrets never investing any of this money. Lessons learnedStart investing now. You don't need to wait until you have x amount of money in your bank account; it's never going to come. A few years back I asked my dear friend and writer/journalist Dan Solomon to join me for a new tradition: going back 20 years to look back at the year in music. Once again we put together our Top Ten Favorite Records from 2001 as well as share some honorable mentions. Joining us in the discussion this time is another wonderful friend that also shares in our unabashed love of music and pop culture, journalist and blogger Jason Simpson. It's been a long time since we all three spoke to one another so this was a real treat and more than just an exercise in nostalgia. Get ready to make some playlists and jot down our recommendations. As always there are sound clips included as well. Grateful to Dan and Jason for joining me and truly hope you all are safe + healthy. Stay tuned for a single in the future featuring my cover of the song that closes this episode since I think it's one of the most beautiful ballads ever written. Two moms in rural Collin County have come up with an ingenious way to protect doctors and their families from getting sick after long shifts at the hospital. Medical staff don’t just need PPEs right now. They also need RVs. Emily Phillips is married to an ER doctor and got worried that her husband could bring home COVID19 since both she and their 8-year-old son suffer from asthma. So, Emily got on Facebook last week and asked if she could borrow an RV to allow her husband to come home – but still stay outside to prevent any possible exposure. Within six days, Emily’s one Facebook request has turned into an entire Facebook Group with a couple thousand members and RV owners across the country lending their motorhomes to doctors they’ve never even met. Emily Phillips and her new friend, Holly Haggard, joined the Jasons in a lively conversation. Also, in the episode, COVID19 blindsided a lot of businesses in our state. But not the grocer, HEB. In January, the popular Texas supermarket chain started making calls to suppliers and retailers in China to see what kind of impact they were experiencing from the coronavirus. Those phone calls paid off. By March, when cases began surfacing in Texas, HEB was ready. It enacted an emergency plan, raised hourly pay for workers and changed store hours to address the conflict. Dan Solomon, a writer for Texas Monthly, called the Jasons from Austin to share some fascinating details from his magazine story of how HEB planned for the pandemic.More Infos: Rvs 4 MDs Inside the Story of How H-E-B Planned for the Pandemic, Texas Monthly

Dan Friedman (Conservative) and Solomon Gibson, III (Democrat) discuss the voter fraud that has emerged in 2 counties in North Carolina; former President (#41) George H.W. Bush (who passed away) & projections for the 2020 Presidential Election.  Our original LIVE recording was lost due to a technical failure. I apologize for the poor quality of this recording, but at least we do have this back up recording of the show.   Dan & Solomon intelligently and respectfully discussed all issues from both political perspectives. We highlighted the unbelievable fraud that has emerged from Bladen & Robeson Counties, North Carolina, reviewing that the state board of elections continues to meet to decide the fate of this congressional race.  The Presidential administration of George H.W. Bush with its dedication and honor that largely went unrecognized in its time was contrasted to our norms today. This lead us to an analysis of the leading contemporary potential candidates for President in 2020.  Dan and Solomon provided a good look at what two ordinary working Americans feel about the Presidential Election coming in 2020 as well as their thoughts on these contemporary issues.

It's been... one year since we did this.  Every year, I make sure to do a retrospective going back 30 years for movies and 20 years for music.  Earlier in February, I had two friends on to discuss our favorite 1988 movies.  This time it's all about records from 1998. A lot of it does stem from my nostalgic tendencies, but it’s also to deconstruct my two favorite art forms to see what holds up, what doesn’t, and how pop culture has changed over a span of a couple decades.  It’s also a chance for you to see where my taste lies, for better or worse, as well as to get to know a close friend of mine. He’s joined me for the past couple of years on Pop Culture Club (which is what this show was called in its inception) and once again, Austin-based journalist Dan Solomon is back to discuss our favorite records from 1998.  We also share memories, talk about the year in general, and have some laughs.  Included are several song clips and hopefully a surprise or two along the way! Thanks as always to Dan for joining me on this adventure through time and space and memory.  This was definitely our best year in review yet when it comes to the favorites we chose and the overall conversation as well.  Hopefully, you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed recording this yearly tradition!  See you next year for our 1999 year in review. It's been awhile since I took the crossover approach for an episode, allowing it to exist for both Director's Club & Voices and Visions.  Since my guests today are both tremendously talented filmmakers with a lot of insights, stories and new projects to promote, I decided to include this in both feeds.  After my introduction to the proceedings, I first speak with writer/director Jonathan Milott who alongside collaborator Cary Murnion have recently made a film called BUSHWICK that couldn't be more timely.  We delve into exactly why that is as well as the history between this team who is also responsible for the indie horror/comedy COOTIES.  P.S They're not brothers. At around the 40 minute mark, I then speak with someone I've known for quite awhile since she also happens to be the wife of one of my closest friends and former guests, Mr. Dan Solomon.  Katherine Craft is an established writer in many forms with a lot of success stories, both as an activist and as a creative artist.  Her latest endeavor involves HBO (yes that HBO) so we discuss the experience surrounding that as well as her IndieGoGo campaign for her personal project CHARLOTTE AND CHARLIE, which I hope you'll contribute to.  Both interviews provide a lot of great commentary on the art of directing, writing, within the film and theater industries, so I am positive you'll get a lot of these talks.  And be sure to follow the work of Katherine linked below! Happy Memorial Day!  For the month of May this year, I have had the pleasure of talking about two of my favorite directors with two of my favorite guests.  One of the reasons that this show exist is due to the inclusion of my former co-host Patrick Ripoll.  He returns to talk about a controversial, innovative filmmaker by the name of Spike Lee, whom has in both of our eyes, made three masterpieces which we talk about at length along with the majority of his filmography. Some documentaries aren't included this time around and we had to skip over a couple of titles and rush through a couple towards the end but this is possibly one of the best conversations we've had to date.  Not only do we talk about Lee's remarkable talent, but important issues raised in a lot of his work and how they've affected us personally.  We also briefly talk about Patrick's upcoming podcast towards the end, and during the introduction, I touch upon previous guest Dan Solomon's achievement alongside Jessica Luther in the world of journalism.  This is a must-hear episode all-around! 00:00 - 08:19 - Introduction 08:20 - 11:34 - Introduction with Patrick 11:35 - 13:30 - Director Song 13:31 - 44:41 - First Experience, She's Gotta Have It, School Daze 44:42 - 01:15:44 - Do The Right Thing, Mo' Better Blues, Jungle Fever 01:15:45 - 01:57:16 - Malcolm X, Crooklyn, Clockers 01:57:17 - 01:57:49 - "He Got Game" - Public Enemy (snippet) 01:57:50 - 02:12:40 - Get On The Bus, 4 Little Girls, He Got Game 02:12:41 - 02:51:39 - Summer Of Sam, Bamboozled, 25th Hour 02:51:40 - 03:24:39 - She Hate Me, Inside Man, Passing Strange, OldBoy, Da Sweet Blood Of Jesus, ChiRaq 03:24:40 - 03:30:11 - Top 5 Spike Lee Films / Outro For the rest of this month, there may one episode or two depending on coordinating schedules (but there will be a bonus episode coming soon too).  The next official episode records in two weeks with Supporting Characters' host Bill Ackerman as we take a look at the legendary Sam Peckinpah.  Until then, please send us an email at directorsclubpodcast@gmail.com and visit the podcast network over at NowPlayingNetwork.net as well as DirectorsClubPodcast.com Thank you so much as always for listening and hope you have a great start to the summer! Jim and Patrick reunite alongside guest and friend to the show Dan Solomon, a journalist that has written for a wide variety of news outlets including Austin Chronicle, Texas Observer, and Culture Map.  We decide to talk about a filmmaker whose main strengths rely on screenwriting and characterization for this episode.  Noah Baumbach first came onto the scene in the mid 90s with the cult Gen-X classic KICKING AND SCREAMING.  Then we elaborate more on his even bigger success a decade later with the divorce dramedy THE SQUID AND THE WHALE.  In addition, Jim revisits the incredibly overlooked Billy Wilder satire ACE IN THE HOLE, Dan reviews the highly acclaimed documentary THE IMPOSTER, and Patrick addresses some questions we got from a listener that makes for some fun discussion! In about ten days, we will be joined once again by Phil Noble Jr, to discuss the great William Friedkin! Please be sure to leave us a voicemail to play on the show at 224-366-9528. If you’re a movie blogger/podcaster and would like a guest spot on the show to talk about a filmmaker whose work you admire. This week Director’s Club has film buff and hobbyist filmmaker Greg David talking with Patrick about highly influential American-turned-Brit director Richard Lester. The films we focus on capture the many sides of this unique director, from the French new-wave inspired pure joy of A Hard Day’s Night (where the template for the modern music video was born) to the unexpectedly touching and heartfelt Robin and Marian, which simultaneously tells a rousing adventure story while capturing deep feelings of loss and love. In addition, we talk about Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut and some low-budget superhero sequel that a guy named Chris Nolan did. Maybe you heard of it, it came out recently. Next episode we discuss the wit and bile captured in the films of Noah Baumbach with pop culture writer/blogger Dan Solomon. If you liked the show, why not leave us a voicemail at 224-366-9528? If you’re a movie blogger/podcaster and would like a guest spot on the show to talk about a filmmaker whose work you admire.
