Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a form of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). Cognitive Behavior Therapy traditionally has been focused on delivering specific treatment protocols for specific struggles; for instance, if you were dealing with fears of public speaking as we see in social anxiety, then there was a treatment protocol for you to get better or sometimes five different treatment protocols that you could choose from, based on the clinician you worked with If you were dealing with panic attacks, there was a specific treatment protocol for it. However, since 2000 Cognitive Behavior Therapy has moved from having a single protocol for a specific disorder - social anxiety, panic, etc- to have a unified protocol for multiple struggles because, in the case of anxiety, for example, it's much more common to struggle with different types of fears than a single one. So if you're dealing with attacks it's also possible that you're dealing with chronic worry, or if you're dealing with chronic worry it's also possible that you're struggling with fears of public speaking. Today I have a chance to speak with Dr. David Barlow, the developer of the Unified Protocol. In this conversation, you will hear The basics of a Unified protocol in cognitive Behavior TherapyWhat is avoidance and how it worksWhat's negative affect and how it worksWhat's neuroticism and how it worksWhy is important to understand emotionsWhat are temperamental personality factorsYou will also hear me asking Dr. Barlow for permission to be sassy and ask controversial questions. What's a process in behavior therapy? Is process-based therapy different from the unified protocol? What is a transdiagnostic process: is an intervention different than a process? Is a transdiagnostic process a way in which people cope with internal experiences?Tune in, you don't want to miss how cognitive behaviorists are thinking of therapy these days and how this informs your experience in therapy or coaching when dealing with fear-based struggles.About Dr. BarlowDr. Barlow received his Ph.D. from the University of Vermont and has published over 650 articles and chapters and over 90 books and clinical manuals, mostly in the areas of anxiety and related emotional disorders and clinical research methodology. He is formerly a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and a Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology at Brown University.Dr. Barlow was also a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University at Albany, State University of New York, and Director of the Phobia and Anxiety Disorders Clinic at the University at Albany, SUNY. Thoughts on Record: Podcast of the Ottawa Institute of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
While a number of empirically supported, disorder-specific treatment protocols exist, it is frequently the experience of clinicians that clients present with co-morbid symptoms - that is, symptoms of a number of mental disorders at the same time. This can present challenges around treating concurrent symptoms and/or what to prioritize in treatment. Dr. Kristen Ellard, Clinical Psychologist, Professor & co-developer/co-author of the Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders, a cognitive behavioral treatment designed to target emotion dysregulation across mood and anxiety disorders, joins us for a fascinating discussion in which we cover: the origin story and philosophical underpinnings of the Unified Protocolhow the Unified Protocol model proposes that normally adaptive emotional & behavioral processes are translated into psychopathology the basic structure of Unified Protocol including core interventionsthe proposed mechanism of changes within the Unified Protocol's modelwhether commonly employed theoretical models in psychology (e.g., CBT, psychoanalytic, ACT, EFT etc) actually match the way in which the brain actually works how to leverage knowledge of how the brain processes information to maximize the effective deployment of psychotherapythe critical role of somatic (interoceptive) sensations in the construction of emotional experienceshow subcortical or “unconscious” areas of the brain might make calculations with respect to threat, attraction, preferences etc. what we can learn about brain function and the importance of sense of self in the context of mental disorders from emergent data around the therapeutic benefits of psychedelicsComments or Feedback? Email the podcast: oicbtpodcast@gmail.comKristen Ellard, Ph.D. is Assistant Professor in Psychology at Harvard Medical School and Director of Dimensional Neuroimaging Research at the Massachusetts General Hospital Division of Neuropsychiatry. She completed her PhD in clinical psychology at Boston University under the mentorship of Dr. David Barlow, and completed her clinical internship and postdoctoral fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School. She was co-developer and co-author of the Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders, a cognitive behavioral treatment designed to target emotion dysregulation across mood and anxiety disorders, which has now been translated into six languages. Dr. Ellard's research uses transdiagnostic, dimension-based neuroscience and behavioral approaches to understand the roots of severe cognitive and affective dysregulation in neuropsychiatric disorders, and to find more efficient and effective means to address this dysregulation through combined behavioral and neuromodulatory approaches such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and deep brain stimulation (DBS). She has received several foundation awards and two NIH National Research Service Awards for her research program (F31/F32), including most recently a Fellowship Award through the MGH and Brown University Joint Training Program in Recovery and Restoration of CNS Health and Function (T32) and a Mentored Patient-Oriented Career Development Award (K23) from the NIMH.https://dnn.mgh.harvard.edu/member/kristen-k-ellard-phd/

Anxiety and stress can have detrimental effects on your physical health — which can affect your job and your career path. In this episode, host Morra Aarons-Mele speaks with Jason Miller, the director of the Leadership Academy at OhioHealth. Miller, whose work specializes in awakening joy, purpose, and meaning in work, had always driven himself very hard. He was the first in his family to go to college, followed by becoming a senior executive at a global company. But then Miller found himself in the ER, convinced he was having a heart attack and realized he needed to make some major changes (and no, he didn't Eat, Pray, Love). Morra also shares her own story of a recent panic attack that left her hospitalized. Plus, Dr. David Barlow, a pioneer in the field of treating stress, discusses strategies for coping with anxiety, stress, and phobias, and how to "right size" your problems — while admitting anxiety isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a cutting-edge and evidence-based form of cognitive behavioral therapy. ACT concepts and principles help us heal from pain, make life affirming choices, and build happiness. ACT has been shown to help individuals with anxiety, depression, chronic pain, relationship problems, and general stress improve their happiness and general well-being. In this episode, cross-posted from the podcast Psychologists Off The Clock, Dr. Yael Schonbrun interviews ACT expert Dr. Jill Stoddard. Metaphors and exercises play an incredibly important part in the successful delivery of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). These powerful tools go far in helping clients connect with their values and give them the motivation needed to make a real, conscious commitment to change. Dr. Stoddard's book, The Big Book of ACT Metaphors: A Practitioner's Guide to Experiential Exercises and Metaphors in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (New Harbinger Publication, 2014), offers an essential A-Z resource guide that includes tons of new metaphors and experiential exercises to help promote client acceptance, defusion from troubling thoughts, and values-based action. The book also includes scripts tailored to different client populations, and special metaphors and exercises that address unique problems that may sometimes arise in your therapy sessions. Several ACT texts and workbooks have been published for the treatment of a variety of psychological problems. However, no one resource exists where you can find an exhaustive list of metaphors and experiential exercises geared toward the six core elements of ACT. Whether you are treating a client with anxiety, depression, trauma, or an eating disorder, this book will provide you with the skills needed to improve lives, one exercise at a time. About Dr. Jill Stoddard Jill Stoddard, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist, the director of the Center for Stress & Anxiety Management in Carlsbad. She received her Ph.D. from the renowned Boston University Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders under the mentorship of David Barlow. Jill is an award winning teacher and peer-reviewed ACT trainer who has presented at local, national and international conferences and has co-authored articles on CBT, ACT, anxiety disorders, and cardiac and chronic pain. Plus: It's almost over, but this month is Openly Secular Month! School administrators in Montgomery County, Maryland have removed "Christmas" and "Yom Kippur" from the school calendar rather than add the Muslim holiday of Eid al Adha. Kids still get off on Christmas and Yom Kippur, but the holidays just won't get listed as such. So much for inclusiveness. Finally, in Fayette County, Georgia, county commissioner David Barlow (a Republican) greeted newly elected commisioner Pota Coston (an African-American and a Democrat) by issuing a statement bemoaning the "evil" of the "Demoncrats" and vowing to ensure a Republican wins the White House in 2016 "in the mighty name of Jesus." He later issued a non-apology apology, blaming his stupidity on his "passion for Jesus Christ" (which is probably correct but for different reasons). It's not surprising that such morons exist, but it is disturbing that they get elected.

Mental Help Net (www.mentalhelp.net) presents the Wise Counsel Podcast (wisecounsel.mentalhelp.net), hosted by David Van Nuys, Ph.D. "Michelle Craske, Ph.D. on Anxiety Disorders Research and Treatment" In this episode of the Wise Counsel Podcast, Dr. Van Nuys interviews Michelle Craske, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist, UCLA professor and anxiety disorders researcher. Many different anxiety related subjects are touched upon during the interview, including: the relationship between anxiety and fear, different types of panic attacks including nocturnal panic, her treatment workbook Mastery of Anxiety and Panic co-authored with anxiety research luminary Dr. David Barlow, relaxation-induced panic, the nature of agorophobia and what predicts its occurrence, the relationship between anxiety and depression, and computer assisted psychotherapy for anxiety disorders.
Mental Help Net (www.mentalhelp.net) presents the Wise Counsel Podcast (wisecounsel.mentalhelp.net), hosted by David Van Nuys, Ph.D. "David H. Barlow, Ph.D. on the Nature and Treatment of Anxiety and Panic Disorders", posted January 15, 2008. Dr. Van Nuys interviews David Barlow, Ph.D. a highly influential clinical psychologist and psychotherapy researcher well known for his seminal work on anxiety and panic disorders. In this interview, Dr. Barlow talks about some of the knowledge that research over the last several decades has taught us about the nature of the anxiety disorders. Among the important insights are these: 1) anxiety and fear are distinct emotions, 2) anxiety and panic are fundamentally distinct though related problems, 3) The older exposure-based treatments for anxiety disorders don't work well. What does work well is to work with people's avoidance of their emotions and emotional experiences; not so much their avoidance of situations. One current project Barlow is working on is a unified model for how to do effective therapy with all of the emotional disorders. In order to do this right, it is necessary to cross old boundaries between therapy schools and incorporate behavioral, psychodynamic and humanistic techniques in a systematic fashion. Barlow predicts that in the future the historic distinctions between these schools of psychotherapy will become more or less irrelevant as research based treatments focus on what works, not where it came from.
