On today's episode, I talk to musician Heather Trost. Originally from Albuquerque, NM, Heather really started taking music seriously in college, often touring whenever she wasn't in class. In the early 2000s, she met her now husband, Neutral Milk Hotel drummer Jeremy Barnes and joined his fledgling project A Hawk and A Hacksaw, making it a duo. Since that time, they have released six albums, the latest of which is Forest Bathing in 2018. As a solo musician, Heather has released four albums, and her latest Desert Flowers, was released late last year on Ba Da Bing Records, and it's great! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter. “Desert Flowers” The New Mexico-born Heather Trost is one half of the American Balkan Folk Band A Hawk And A Hacksaw, the other half being her husband, the accordionist Jeremy Barnes, who, by the way, also hails from New Mexico. Over the course of their career, A Hawk and a Hacksaw have put out seven marvelous albums, including Darkness At Noon, The Way The Wind Blows and their most recent effort, 2018's Forest Bathing. I know 2018 isn't that recent, but Trost and Barnes have been busy. Trost has put out four solo albums, including her brand new one, Desert Flowers and she's played with everyone from Beirut to Swans to Thor and Friends. Desert Flowers is a stone cold stunner—filled with lilting strings, dreamy melodies and sonorous hooks, the nine-track album is stirring work. A hypnotic blend of deliciously dusty hymns and introspective indie rock with elements of metaphysics, cosmology and even a little desert surf, this is a powerful and internally evocative album. It's a quiet and poetic revelation. This chat was recorded a while back before this record was born, but it's a cool conversation. Joining Joel this week: Andrew Coplon (who runs Secret Hoppers and Craft Beer Professionals), and Jeremy Barnes (Controller at New Realm Brewing, Virginia Beach and can also be found at Hops New). Jeremy is a senior accounting and financial management professional with experience in finance operations, strategic planning and analysis, and project management. While serving in the military, he acquired the mentality to always leave a place better than how he found it. And now, he applies this same thought process to his work in accounting and finance. But Jeremy's abilities go far beyond the balance sheet. In 2016, he started Hops News while working as Chief Financial Officer at Appalachian Mountain Brewery to showcase breweries doing incredible things through their liquid. After a short break, in 2019, he decided to fire back up the podcast. And during the pandemic he took the show live hosting a weekly Happy (Hoppy) Hour where they talk to people in the beer industry about the incredible things they are doing through beer. They have also featured non-profits and use the donate feature to support their cause. To date, they have raised over $2,000 during their episodes and over $40,000 through direct support of local events. Jeremy started Hops News not just because he loves beer, but because he loves the culture that craft beer has created and to move forward his mission in philanthropy through beer! As a lifelong learner, Jeremy is tough but fair when it comes to leading his team and is passionate about developing the best in everyone. And this week, he will be in the show sharing his story, experience, talk about beer, and leadership. Enjoy the show!
Jeremy is head teacher of All Saints Primary School in Anfield, Liverpool. In this episode, he shares his stories on what helped and stopped him flying and some thoughts on how schools can help teachers, parents and children fly.

If you’re tight on time, there is a short complimentary episode with our guest where he summarizes the key takeaways in “The Seven Sins of Enterprise AI Strategies”. While business leaders may know AI needs a mindset shift to get the most out of the technology, communicating what exactly needs to change is challenging. Jeremy Barnes, Element AI’s CTO, has an incredible ability to find and make sense of the connecting thread between AI technology and business. In this long-form interview, Jeremy talks about his initial role at Element AI as Chief Architect and helping to develop the company’s thesis, the 4 personas of AI adoption he’s observed in the market, and the importance of companies fostering a collaborative culture that will be able to experiment and change quickly around this new tech. If you’re curious how company leaders should think strategically about AI, this interview is for you.
This is a special, short episode with a summary of lessons complementing our full-length interview with Element AI’s CTO Jeremy Barnes on “The 4 Personas of AI Adoption”. A lot of Jeremy’s work has him involved in the top level strategy of AI implementation for the Global 2000, and he’s recently synthesized “7 sins of Entreprise AI Strategies” based off of the common mistakes he has observed. From managing risk to accounting reforms to cultural enablement, these “sins” also come with suggestions for how boards and C-suites can best enable their AI strategies.

Everyone's talking about machine learning and how it can be applied to solving some of today's top business problems. Close to a year ago, we had an interview here on the AI in Industry podcast with Jeremy Barnes of Element AI. We visited their headquarters in Montreal, and we'd interviewed Yoshua Bengio a couple years before that. Jeremy had brought up one point in that interview that I really like and that transfers its way into this conversation, which is that businesses should think not just about being more efficient with artificial intelligence, but places where they can actually make a real difference in the bottom line for the company beyond shaving off some savings. In this week's episode, we focus on compliance and analyzing contracts. At first, one might think about such an application in terms of cost savings. We speak with Shiv Vaithyanathan, an IBM fellow and Chief Architect of Watson Compare & Comply, about the following: What's possible with AI when it comes to analyzing contracts, and, most importantly Where is the business upside for AI as it relates to contract analysis. How can we analyze contracts not just in a way that saves money, but that allows us to optimize our deals for revenue, for the likelihood that they'll go through? What's that farther vision?
