Ever feel like you blinked and suddenly your sweet elementary schooler is dealing with big emotions, social drama, and maybe even puberty? You're not alone! In this episode, we welcome back Dr. Sheryl Gonzalez-Ziegler, a clinical psychologist and bestselling author, to dive into her newest book, "The Crucial Years: The Essential Guide to Mental Health and Modern Puberty in Middle Childhood". Dr. Ziegler sheds light on why these 6- to 12-year-old years are so important (and often overlooked!) and gives actionable advice on how to support your child's emotional, social, and mental health during this time. We tackle tough topics like why kids are facing more pressure than ever (seriously, what IS that new math?), how to prioritize emotional intelligence over academics (because surviving the playground is way more important than the Pythagorean theorem, right?), navigating the tricky world of screens and social media (where we're all just trying to keep up!), and effective strategies for emotional regulation (for both you and your kiddo, because let's face it, meltdowns are a family affair). We'll help you connect with your child, decode their tween/teen-ish behavior, and maybe, just maybe, avoid completely losing it before they hit high school. Consider this your survival guide to the "forgotten years" – it's a wild ride, but we're in this together! To help you embrace this paradox, Douglas provides mythic stories of soul development and intuition from Maya and Pythagorean traditions, ancient Egyptian thought, and Zoroastrianism. He shows how embracing the power of emotions like wonder, dread, and awe, provide a mirror that allows us to see ourselves as infinite and immortal people on finite and mortal adventures.Tune in and share all of your questions and comments about having a mystical life on our YouTube livestream or on our Facebook page.amzn.to/4kdaF6Phttps://amzn.to/3SA1gdKdouglasgillettecreations.comSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-conscious-consultant-hour8505/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
DANNY KAYE: THE BENEFITS OF VERSATILITYDavid Daniel Kaminsky (1911-1987), known to the world as Danny Kaye, was an entertainer that could do it all. He was as adept at pathos as he was at antic comedy, and he captivated audiences throughout the 1950s with his magic. His signature patter songs, represented by our first number: Anatole of Paris, were crafted for him by his business partner and wife, Sylvia Fine, and together they made film and Broadway history. This is a fascinating connection that deserves a deeper dive.Danny resembled my adored uncle Teddy, and I always associated them in my mind. They had similar profiles and hair styles, and I was delighted to discover that his people and mine emigrated from the same town in Ukraine. Throughout my early years Danny Kaye's warmth and silliness provided a safe harbor against the anxieties of childhood. He was my ideal tutor in the film Merry Andrew, introducing the Pythagorean theory in song.Early on in his career, in 1934, Danny toured Asia - and it was there that he discovered and developed his skill at entertaining audiences who didn't speak English, a key to his popularity with kids of all ages. ANATOLE OF PARISThis number comes from the 1947 film, THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY, adapted form James Thurber's novel about the day dreams of a hen pecked magazine editor. Sylvia Fine worked up this ditty where Danny fantasizes that he is a French milliner who bedecks ladies in ridiculous hats - because, as we find out in the punch line - he hates women. You can imagine the impish glint in Danny's eye as he extrapolates on the outrages that he'll commit to these chapeaux, and that's one of the secrets of Danny Kaye's success: the absolute delight he takes in wowing us with his lighter than air articulations. I WONDER WHO'S KISSING HER NOWAnd, here comes the other side of this complex coin - the opening up and sharing of his soulful humanity. This recording, also from 1947, has Danny - ever so tenderly - crooning over a lost love. The song, composed in 1909 by Harold Orlob, for the Broadway play, THE PRINCE OF TO-NIGHT, became a standard. In the hands of the master, this rumination is akin to listening in on the singer's private thoughts, as opposed to a performance. As we said in the intro, this artist could do it all, and here is but a sampling of his versatility.

Hello and welcome to The Rob Burgess Show. I am, of course, your host, Rob Burgess. On this our 275th episode our guest is Alexander Morpheigh. Alexander Morpheigh, whose real name is Alex Mazal, was born on April 29, 1972, and is a professional with a unique blend of expertise in science, engineering, business, and philosophy. Married with two children, Alexander's academic foundation began with extensive studies in physics and astronomy. While initially pursuing a career in astrophysics, he ultimately earned a Master's degree in Engineering and a degree in Business Development from the State Maritime University. In 2024, Alexander's passion for storytelling and philosophy culminated in the publication of “The Pythagorean”. This science fiction novel weaves together his research and insights, presenting a captivating narrative inspired by the teachings and legacy of Pythagoras in a modern context. Beyond his professional achievements, Alexander has cultivated a deep passion for ancient Greek culture. Since 2012, he has dedicated himself to the study of ancient Greek philosophy. This journey led him to contract a professional film crew in 2017 to create a documentary, investigating the legacy of Pythagoras and his modern followers. While the documentary remained unreleased, the project unearthed intriguing discoveries, including the existence of three secret Pythagorean orders comprised of contemporary scientists, such as mathematicians, physicists, and astronomers. With over three decades of experience in industrial automation engineering, Alexander has been at the forefront of innovation in this field. Since 2005, he has served as the CEO of a group of technology companies specializing in industrial automation and robotics, driving advancements in cutting-edge technologies. Allow me to introduce you to the ancient mathematician, philosopher, and mystic, Pythagoras. We begin a new series by getting to know Pythagoras, not just as a mathematician but as someone who was steeped in the mysteries of the universe. You'll explore his life, where he came from, and the almost mystical way people saw him. The book somehow manages to be optimistic at the same time that it realistically portrays horrific climate catastrophes - the opening chapter will stick with you forever. That said, it also suffers from some of KSR's usual writing quirks: weak characters and a pretty loosely defined plot. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit localjapan.substack.comMy brother and I finished demolishing the entire kitchen by hand, including the stone foundation, brick stove, ceramic tile bathtub, and wood framing. (Here's a YouTube short of the demolishing of the kitchen.) Upon clearing the site of debris, we dug deep footings around the entire perimeter and placed rebar inside. We were working against the clock because our flights home to California for the Christmas break were upon us. However, we managed to pour the concrete, batch by batch. Without the luxury of a backhoe or a cement truck, we completed this process with shovels, a hammer drill, a wheelbarrow, and a portable electric cement mixer. Ultimately, we left the work site at a great spot. In January, I'll be able to pick up where we left off and cap off the entire floor of the future kitchen with a nice concrete slab. Then will come the fun part (and my brother's specialty as a trained carpenter): wood framing.Below, you'll find three photos of the old kitchen:Now, here are four photos of the cleared space and the footings we dug. We had to remove the old foundations first. (It was interesting to see how the previous builders worked. They placed large boulders beneath the rectangular foundations to lock the whole structure in place.) When digging and forming the new foundation, we used string lines and the Pythagorean theorem to make sure the corners were square:When my parents visited in November, they helped a great deal with cleaning, organizing, demolishing walls, and composting the old straw from the attic:One last housekeeping note, I am going to change the name of the podcast to: The Akiya Project. It provides more continuity with the YouTube channel. Most importantly, the name more truly reflects the central theme of the podcast. Logistically, nothing will change on your end.And with that, I am excited to bring you today's episode on the iconic and tumultuous life of Frank Lloyd Wright. His designs have had a profound influence on me and how I hope to build. It was a pleasure to dive deep into his life to learn about his own influences, his philosophy on nature and democracy, and in particular, his fascination with old Japan. His imprint still echoes deeply across America, and even parts of Japan. At the very least, here in my little corner of Kobe, his legacy will endure. The first concrete has been poured beneath the previous foundation! The process will continue several more times, which will ensure that the house does not heave or shift unevenly over time or fail during an earthquake. In other news, we have running water on the property thanks to a deep well cleaning and the installation of a brand-new pump. The well now has a capacity of 2.5 tons of water per day! I am in the middle of editing a video about the cleaning process for the YouTube channel, so I will share that here next time. For now, you can listen to me describe a bit of the process in today's episode. Here are just a few tips I've learned from YouTube and from studying Foundations & Concrete Work, published by Fine Homebuilding (a magazine I love, by the way):* First, place a set of gravel under the concrete. It provides a stable base, improves drainage, and prevents cracks.* The plastic sheet (see below) is a passive house detail that improves airtightness and prevents moisture from rising into your crawlspace.* Since this job was a retrofit, we anchored rebar into the old foundation. We drilled holes into the old foundation with the hammer drill, filled them with specially designed caulk, and inserted the rebar into the holes.* The standard mix is generally: 1 part cement, 2 parts sand, 3 parts aggregate.* More water that you add makes it easier to work with but also reduces its strength.* Try to mix to the consistency of cookie dough.* After you pour, vibrate the mix to reduce air bubbles that form inside.* To help the concrete cure, shower it with water every few hours (water is an agent that activates the cement).Unbeknownst to me for weeks, episode #40 went missing from the catalog. I am not sure how this happened and am also quite ashamed because the interview I did with Steve Beimel that day deserves to be shared far and wide across Japan. I've re-uploaded it this week. I enjoyed listening back to our discussion. I recalled my subsequent visit to the School of Traditional Building Arts in Kyoto and learning how to use the Pythagorean theorem, a chalk line, and a handsaw to carve a wood joint. It was also wonderful to reflect on how far things have progressed since the time of the interview (just over one year ago).I hope you enjoy this re-broadcast as much as I did.Local Japan Podcast is a reader-supported publication. Brent is a Senior Principal APEX and Apps Dev Instructor with Oracle University. Hi Brent! Thanks for being with us today. So, let's jump right in! What are vector indexes and how are they useful? Brent: Now, vector indexes are specialized indexing data structures that can make your queries more efficient against your vectors. They use techniques such as clustering, and partitioning, and neighbor graphs. Now, they greatly reduce the search space, which means that your queries happen quicker. They're also extremely efficient. They do require that you enable the vector pool in the SGA. 01:42 Lois: Brent, walk us through the different types of vector indices that are supported by Oracle AI Vector Search. How do they integrate into the overall process? Brent: So Oracle AI Vector Search supports two types of indexes, in-memory neighbor graph vector index. HNSW is the only type of in-memory neighbor graph vector index that is supported. These are very efficient indexes for vector approximate similarity search. HNSW graphs are structured using principles from small world networks along with layered hierarchical organization. And neighbor partition vector index, inverted file flat index, is the only type of neighbor partition index supported. It is a partition-based index which balances high search quality with reasonable speed. 02:35 Nikita: Brent, you mentioned that enabling the vector pool in the SGA is a requirement when working with vector indexes. Can you explain that process for us? Brent: In order for you to be able to use vector indexes, you do need to enable the vector pool area. And in order to do that, what you need to do is set the vector memory size parameter. You can set it at the container database level. And the PDB inherits it from the CDB. Now bear in mind that the database does have to be balanced when you set the vector pool. 03:12 Lois: Ok. Are there any other considerations to keep in mind when using vector indices? Brent: Vector indexes are stored in this pool, and vector metadata is also stored here. And you do need to restart the database. So large vector indexes do need lots of RAM, and RAM constrains the vector index size. You should use IVF indexes when there is not enough RAM. IVF indexes use both the buffer cache as well as disk. 03:42 Nikita: And what about memory considerations? Brent: So to remind you, a vector is a numerical representation of text, images, audio, or video that encodes the features or semantic meaning of the data, instead of the actual contents, such as the words or pixels of an image. So the vector is a list of numerical values known as dimensions with a specified format. Now, Oracle does support the int8 format, the float32 format, and the float64 format. Depending on the format depends on the number of bytes. For instance, int8 is one byte, float32 is four bytes. Now, Oracle AI Vector Search supports vectors with up to 65,535 dimensions. 04:34 Lois: What should we know about creating a table with a vector column? Brent: Now, Oracle Database 23ai does have a new vector data type. The new data type was created in order to support vector search. The definition can include the number of dimensions and can include the format. Bear in mind that either one of those are optional when you define your column. The possible dimension formats are int, float 32, and float 64. Float 32 and float 64 are IEEE standards, and Oracle Database will automatically cast the value if needed. 05:18 Nikita: Can you give us a few declaration examples? Brent: Now, if we just do a vector type, then the vectors can have any arbitrary number of dimensions and formats. If we describe the vector type as vector * , *, then that means that vectors can have an arbitrary number of dimensions and formats. Vector and vector * , * are equivalent. Vector with the number of dimensions specified, followed by a comma, and then an asterisk, is equivalent to vector number of dimensions. Vectors must all have the specified number of dimensions, or an error will be thrown. Every vector will have its dimension stored without format modification. And if we do vector asterisk common dimension element format, what that means is that vectors can have an arbitrary number of dimensions, but their format will be up-converted or down-converted to the specified dimension element format, either INT8, float 32, or float 64. 06:25 Working towards an Oracle Certification this year? Brent, what is the vector constructor and why is it useful? Brent: Now, the vector constructor is a function that allows us to create vectors without having to store those in a column in a table. These are useful for learning purposes. You use these usually with a smaller number of dimensions. Bear in mind that most embedding models can contain thousands of different dimensions. You get to specify the vector values, and they usually represent two-dimensional like xy coordinates. The dimensions are optional, and the format is optional as well. 07:29 Lois: Right. Before we wrap up, can you tell us how to calculate vector distances? Brent: Now, vector distance uses the function VECTOR_DISTANCE as the main function. This allows you to calculate distances between two vectors and, therefore, takes two vectors as parameters. Optionally, you can specify a metric. If you do not specify a metric, then the default metric, COSINE, would be used. You can optionally use other shorthand functions, too. These include L1 distance, L2 distance, cosine distance, and inner product. All of these functions also take two vectors as input and return the distance between them. Now the VECTOR_DISTANCE function can be used to perform a similarity search. If a similarity search query does not specify a distance metric, then the default cosine metric will be used for both exact and approximate searches. If a similarity search does specify a distance metric in the VECTOR_DISTANCE function, then an exact search with that distance metric is used if it conflicts with the distance metric specified in a vector index. If the two distance metrics are the same, then this will be used for both exact as well as approximate searches. 08:58 Nikita: I was wondering Brent, what vector distance metrics do we have access to? Brent: We have Euclidean and Euclidean squared distances. We have cosine similarity, dot product similarity, Manhattan distance, and Hamming similarity. Let's take a closer look at the first of these metrics, Euclidean and Euclidean squared distances. This gives us the straight-line distance between two vectors. It does use the Pythagorean theorem. It is sensitive to both the vector size as well as the direction. With Euclidean distances, comparing squared distances is equivalent to comparing distances. So when ordering is more important than the distance values themselves, the squared Euclidean distance is very useful as it is faster to calculate than the Euclidean distance, which avoids the square root calculation. 09:58 Lois: And the cosine similarity metrics? Brent: It is one of the most widely used similarity metrics, especially in natural language processing. The smaller the angle means they are more similar. While cosine distance measures how different two vectors are, cosine similarity measures how similar two vectors are. Dot product similarity allows us to multiply the size of each vector by the cosine of their angle. The corresponding geometrical interpretation of this definition is equivalent to multiplying the size of one of the vectors by the size of the projection of the second vector onto the first one or vice versa. Larger means that they are more similar. Smaller means that they are less similar. Manhattan distance is useful for describing uniform grids. You can imagine yourself walking from point A to point B in a city such as Manhattan. Now, since there are buildings in the way, maybe we need to walk down one street and then turn and walk down the next street in order to get to our result. As you can imagine, this metric is most useful for vectors describing objects on a uniform grid such as city blocks, power grids, or perhaps a chessboard. 11:27 Nikita: And finally, we have Hamming similarity, right? Brent: This describes where vector dimensions differ. They are binary vectors, and it tells us the number of bits that require change to match. It compares the position of each bit in the sequence. Now, these are usually used in order to detect network errors. 11:53 Nikita: Brent, thanks for joining us these last two weeks and explaining what Oracle AI Vector Search is. Welcome to Episode 250 of Lucretius Today. This is a podcast dedicated to the poet Lucretius, who wrote "On The Nature of Things," the most complete presentation of Epicurean philosophy left to us from the ancient world. Each week we walk you through the Epicurean texts, and we discuss how Epicurean philosophy can apply to you today. If you find the Epicurean worldview attractive, we invite you to join us in the study of Epicurus at EpicureanFriends.com, where we have a thread to discuss this and all of our podcast episodes. Today we are continuing to review Cicero's "On the Nature of The Gods," which began with the Epicurean spokesman Velleius defending the Epicurean point of view. This week will continue into Section 37 as Cotta, the Academic Skeptic, continues to attack the Epicurean view of the nature of divinity. XXXVII. ... for you asserted likewise that the form of the Deity is perceptible by the mind, but not by sense; that it is neither solid, nor invariable in number; that it is to be discerned by similitude and transition, and that a constant supply of images is perpetually flowing on from innumerable atoms, on which our minds are intent; so that we from that conclude that divine nature to be happy and everlasting. XXXVIII. What, in the name of those Deities concerning whom we are now disputing, is the meaning of all this? For if they exist only in thought, and have no solidity nor substance, what difference can there be between thinking of a Hippocentaur and thinking of a Deity? Other philosophers call every such conformation of the mind a vain motion; but you term it “the approach and entrance of images into the mind.” Thus, when I imagine that I behold T. Gracchus haranguing the people in the Capitol, and collecting their suffrages concerning M. Octavius, I call that a vain motion of the mind: but you affirm that the images of Gracchus and Octavius are present, which are only conveyed to my mind when they have arrived at the Capitol. The case is the same, you say, in regard to the Deity, with the frequent representation of which the mind is so affected that from thence it may be clearly understood that the Gods are happy and eternal. Let it be granted that there are images by which the mind is affected, yet it is only a certain form that occurs; and why must that form be pronounced happy? why eternal? But what are those images you talk of, or whence do they proceed? This loose manner of arguing is taken from Democritus; but he is reproved by many people for it; nor can you derive any conclusions from it: the whole system is weak and imperfect. For what can be more improbable than that the images of Homer, Archilochus, Romulus, Numa, Pythagoras, and Plato should come into my mind, and yet not in the form in which they existed? How, therefore, can they be those persons? And whose images are they? Aristotle tells us that there never was such a person as Orpheus the poet; and it is said that the verse called Orphic verse was the invention of Cercops, a Pythagorean; yet Orpheus, that is to say, the image of him, as you will have it, often runs in my head. What is the reason that I entertain one idea of the figure of the same person, and you another? Why do we image to ourselves such things as never had any existence, and which never can have, such as Scyllas and Chimæras? Why do we frame ideas of men, countries, and cities which we never saw? How is it that the very first moment that I choose I can form representations of them in my mind? How is it that they come to me, even in my sleep, without being called or sought after? XXXIX. The whole affair, Velleius, is ridiculous. You do not impose images on our eyes only, but on our minds. Such is the privilege which you have assumed of talking nonsense with impunity. But there is, you say, a transition of images flowing on in great crowds in such a way that out of many some one at least must be perceived! I should be ashamed of my incapacity to understand this if you, who assert it, could comprehend it yourselves; for how do you prove that these images are continued in uninterrupted motion? Or, if uninterrupted, still how do you prove them to be eternal? There is a constant supply, you say, of innumerable atoms. But must they, for that reason, be all eternal? To elude this, you have recourse to equilibration (for so, with your leave, I will call your Ἰσονομία), and say that as there is a sort of nature mortal, so there must also be a sort which is immortal. By the same rule, as there are men mortal, there are men immortal; and as some arise from the earth, some must arise from the water also; and as there are causes which destroy, there must likewise be causes which preserve. Be it as you say; but let those causes preserve which have existence themselves. I cannot conceive these your Gods to have any. But how does all this face of things arise from atomic corpuscles? Were there any such atoms (as there are not), they might perhaps impel one another, and be jumbled together in their motion; but they could never be able to impart form, or figure, or color, or animation, so that you by no means demonstrate the immortality of your Deity.

Peter Anthony is a TV producer, Paranormal Investigator, a published author of several books, including Key Master and Miracle Dogs (short story), a contributing writer for several magazines across the country, including Johns Hopkins Medical Journal, and a Numerology expert. The early days of Peter's career began when he was studying to become a special effects make-up artist. Anthony received a phone call to make an appearance on Leeza Gibbons' ABC P.M. Magazine show when a scheduled guest cancelled at the last minute. Peter was unaware that this phone call would launch his career in television. Julie Gauthier, producer for CBS News, tuned in the night that Anthony's segment aired, and the rest, as they say, is history. Working alongside news anchors Dan Rather, Diane Sawyer, Leslie Stahl, and Bob Schieffer, Peter was quick to rise, and was soon working with the who's who in television and film as a freelance image consultant. In 1987, the after effects of a Near Death Experience, presented an inexplicable gift of mathematical codes such as, 222, 333, 444, as well as a series of 0.00's, followed by a series of 1111's. This played a life changing occurrence in Anthony's life. His artistic talents disappeared, and were replaced with Pythagorean codes, allowing Anthony to become an authority on ancient Numerology.Hollywood VIP's behind closed doors heard of Peter's gift as an intuitive and began booking private sessions for themselves, their family, friends, and colleagues. In 1995, Peter's NDE abilities landed him on Fox's hit TV series, Sightings. Anthony traveled extensively throughout the United States, working alongside a team of paranormal and forensics experts as a psychic detective. Resolving forgotten murder cases and exploring haunted houses, cemeteries, abandoned caves, and concentration camps skyrocketed Peter's career into becoming an overnight success in television. Mr. Anthony has appeared on The Leeza Gibbons Show, Borderline, Fact or Fiction, Beyond Belief, Celebrity Séance, The History Channel, Celebrity Psychic, Spirit Talk with Chris Fleming, and numerous morning TV shows. Peter has also been a guest on radio shows such as Coast to Coast with George Noory, Midnight FM, The Age of Truth, Dark Thirty Radio, The Outer Limits, The Art Bell Show, and I Heart Radio, as well as numerous YouTube, Podcast, and radio, shows across the world.Peter Anthony's international book tour has propelled him to become a defining speaker for NDEs. Mr. Anthony's book, Key Master, inspired by his own near death, has been inducted into the Edgar Cayce Library and is under development for a documentary series. Whether it is clear to us or not, our universe has an undeniable order. The Key Master Trilogy book series unfastens two thought-provoking questions. “What happens when we die? What if I told you that there exists a secret society dating back to Charlemagne, first Holy Roman Emperor. Advisers, almanacists and court painters possessing a scientia which ever since has governed PR, a hermeneutics, Pythagorean mysticism and Kabbalah numerology mishmash. They taught Louis III how to entertain the people with tales of Vikings, which still run on Bernays's Netflix. They stood on the receiving end of the crusade's plundering of the Islamicate libraries which stockpiled their bookshelves with far away, long gone Byzantine loot. If you're thinking here is Marcus with another far-out theory from his isolation in the Alps, then you're ofc right to do so, but I wonder, do you know that Hegel during his most savage critique dedicated a whole dismantling chapter against this lodge orders claim to knowledge? Isac Newton rubbed his hands at their robbery, John Dee kept copies of their work, Ben Franklin even took to writing under a pseudonym which carried the name of one of their most influential Magus. And I'm not talking about the Freemasons, Illuminati or the Rosicrucians. Did you ever stop to wonder why paintings of the Baroque Caesars seem to follow you around with their gaze in the "open to the public" castles? Who interpellated the Panoptic vision in the soul of the commoner? Faith and destiny was their ware, just like today's neuroscience. Brains are still calculated in cm3, IQ is a speed test of that supposed engine, yet the real onto-intentions of that mechanics lies resting in old diaries of the intelligentsia who mapped the Systema Natura during the industrial espionage of the Age of Exploration. Come with us now on a journey through time and space, to the world of the greatest trick the White Devil ever pulled.

When will I die? What is the sex of my unborn child? Which of two rivals will win a duel? As today, people in the later Middle Ages approached their uncertainties about the future, from the serious to the mundane, in a variety of ways. One of the most commonly surviving prognostic methods in medieval manuscripts is onomancy: the branch of divination that predicts the future from calculations based on the numbers that correlate to the letters of personal names. However, despite its ubiquity, it has been relatively little studied. Onomantic Divination in Late Medieval Britain: Questioning Life, Predicting Death (York Medieval Press, 2024) by Dr. Joanne Edge analyses the intellectual and physical contexts of onomantic texts in some 65 manuscripts of British provenance between around 1150 and 1500, focusing on its two main varieties It demonstrates that onomancies were copied, owned and used by a people from a wide range of literate society in late medieval England: medical practitioners; the gentry and aristocracy; university scholars; and monks. And it seeks to answer the question of why a divinatory device, condemned in canon law as "Pythagorean necromancy", enjoyed such popularity in mainstream books of religion, medicine, and scholasticism. Could the principles of musical harmony reflect the nature of the ideal state and the philosopher king? Join us as we explore the philosophical depth of Plato's Republic, where we argue against Thrasymachus's cynical views on justice and journey through the formation of a society in perfect accord with the soul's three elements. We discuss how a just life, guided by wisdom, rather than honor or appetite, is not just more profitable but vastly more fulfilling. The conversation crescendos with the intriguing ways democracy, oligarchy, and tyranny can be heard in Pythagorean scales—each political mode echoing a distinct musical chord that reveals the health of the state. We analyze the potential influence music on the guardians of Plato's Republic, and how it serves as a reminder of their responsibilities and the perils of governance. The episode examines Phrygian music and its philosophical implications, symbolizing the cyclical nature of societies. We contrast the chaotic life of a tyrant, draped in the illusion of power, with the serene existence of the philosopher king, who finds true harmony within. The concept of math has been around for a long time, developing independently in many different cultures. In 1650 BC, the Egyptians were creating math textbooks on papyrus, with multiplication and division tables. Geometry, like the Pythagorean theorem, was used in ancient Greece. And negative numbers were invented in China around 200 BC.Some mathematical concepts are easier to understand than others. One apple plus one apple equals two apples, for example. But when it comes to complex equations, negative numbers, and calculus, concepts become abstract. All that abstraction prompts some to wonder: Is math even real?Mathematician Dr. Eugenia Cheng has heard this question many times over her career. The quandary is the basis of her latest book, Is Math Real?: How Simple Questions Lead Us to Mathematics' Deepest Truths. She joins Ira from Chicago, Illinois.Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.
