A little over a month ago, I had the privilege to attend a very unique conference, Podstock! Podstock is an annual conference put on by ESSDECK. Each July, teachers from all over the states come together in Wichita, KS for this experience. So, if you are anything like me, you may be asking, “What is Podstock?” According to ESSDECK’s Podstock website, “It’s a tech integration conference. But it’s more than a conference. It’s learning. It’s conversation. It’s family.” After experiencing this three day event, I agree, it is definitely family! So, while attending my first Podstock, I thought I would try to capture some of the participants thoughts on Podstock as well. I would like to thank each of my guests for sharing their thoughts and ideas! I also want to thank the ESSDECK family for having us and making sure we were part of the family! If you haven’t been before, it is definitely something worth checking out! When you get there, be sure to say hello to Kevin Honeycutt (@kevinhoneycutt), Ginger Lewman (@GingerLewman), Katie Perez (@perezhasclass), Dr. Mike Cook and the rest of the ESSDECK family!! In this PreConference Keynote for the 2012 K-12 Online Conference, educator Kevin Honeycutt challenges us to "remix learning" by combining our old models for school with today's possibilities to make learning more interesting and engaging for students. We shouldn't amputate kids' digital limbs when they come to school! If Applebee's can be lit theatrically to make your food more interesting, why can't this be true in our schools? We need to hear more reasons why we CAN make learning more interesting, and invite the students to help us co-create our learning environments. How do we let students get excited about their learning and become archeologists of their own learning? Rather than focusing on what we CAN'T do, let's focus on what we CAN do no matter what our budget is. The "killer app" for the 21st century is "to learn to love to learn." Kevin challenges us to think new ideas, get rid of laminated lesson plans, and be an advocates for students as together we embrace project-based learning.

Ahhhh...it's over. One more school year ended today. After baking in the 95 degree heat up in the third floor, I think we all left very tired. Kevin Honeycutt posed a classic question on his podcast "Driving Questions." He asked, "What is one thing you would change about schools?" Here is my response...it might sound crazy, but it would work.
