Are you curious about the future of education and how technology is shaping the way we learn? In this episode of the Better Learning Podcast, we embark on a fascinating journey into the world of project-based learning (PBL) and artificial intelligence (AI) with special guest David Ross. Join us as we delve into thought-provoking questions that unravel the potential of AI to revolutionize the classroom experience. Takeaways: David Ross has a background in sports writing and transitioned to become a teacher, with a focus on project-based learning (PBL). COVID-19 has challenged the notion that physical attendance in school is inevitable, leading to the exploration of alternative learning options. AI has the potential to empower teachers by saving time on administrative tasks and providing personalized learning experiences. Teacher training in AI and prompt engineering is crucial for effective implementation in the classroom. The current landscape of AI in education is still in the early stages, with a wide range of products and possibilities. AI can assist teachers in designing curriculum and writing projects for project-based learning (PBL). AI has the potential to upskill students and provide equitable educational opportunities, particularly for schools in economically disadvantaged areas or rural areas. The use of AI in various fields, such as chatbots, graphics, and video, can enhance the learning experience for students. Virtual reality experiences can level the playing field for students who don't have access to resources like museums or science centers. Anchoring projects in the local community can engage students and make learning more relevant and meaningful. David Ross is the former Senior Director of the Buck Institute for Education (now PBLWorks), where he wrote the PBL Starter Kit and created and directed the PBL World Conference. David later worked in Washington DC as the CEO of the Partnership for 21st Century Learning, where he coordinated the bipartisan 21st Century Learning Caucus in the United States House of Representatives. In this episode of Talking D&T, I interview Phil Jones, a full-time D&T teacher and subject leader at a school in Merseyside, who is also a part-time doctoral student at Liverpool John Moores University. Phil shares his experience as part of the organizing committee for the PATT (Pupils' Attitude Towards Technology) conference and discusses a paper that grabbed his attention during the event. The paper, authored by Remke Klapwijk from the Netherlands, explores secondary students' intrinsic motivation during multidisciplinary STEAM projects. Phil and I delve into the study's findings, which surprisingly showed no significant effect on motivation despite the initial hypothesis. We also discuss the implications of these results for teaching practice and the importance of challenging assumptions about the impact of multidisciplinary projects on student motivation.Phil also provides insights into his own doctoral research, which focuses on design thinking at Key Stage 3 D&T and the relationship between skills and knowledge. He explains his data collection methods, including using validated instruments, portfolios, presentations, student field notes, and focus groups. We discuss the value of pursuing postgraduate studies as a D&T teacher and the importance of research in providing an evidence base for the subject's impact. Finally, we reflect on the benefits of presenting at conferences, such as receiving valuable feedback and engaging with the wider D&T community.(Text generated by AI, edited by Alison Hardy)Mentioned in the showPhil on LinkedIn Work Upton SchoolKlapwijk, R. Imagine your children waking each day, knowing what they are going to do and how they need to go about doing it. You've prepared them and the environment so well, they hum along in their work driven by curiosity and fueled by discovery. They tackle the “boring stuff” with patience and overcome challenges with optimism. They learn things you never even knew or may have forgotten. These are the characteristics of self-determined learners. Today we discuss the purpose and function of learning and how to let go of the edge of outdated conventional practices to swim in the waters of self-determined learning.

Ahoy! We're setting sail in this episode of Petey Podcast with Job Captain Lizz Most of Architectural Vision Group, the architectural firm heading up the $140-million school construction project in Elyria. Lizz is a familiar face on the district's sister station: Elyria Schools Pioneer TV on YouTube, and often answers our construction questions and guides our tours through the new schools. We are solidly in the 21st century, living with the realities of 20th century learning constructs. What skills are needed to thrive in a knowledge economy in this era? Consider these attributes: Adaptivity Critical thinking Complex communication Self-Education Self-Management
Mike Basinski--"Mr. B"--is a well-known personality in these parts. A life-long Elyrian and long-time principal in the Elyria Schools, Mike is synonymous with calm and comicality. In the 25 years he's spent working in the Elyria Schools, he's most associated with Northwood Middle School, where he's been principal since 2014. When you think Basinski, you think trivia. When Mike took the helm of Northwood seven years ago, he brought his personal love of all things learning to the community by posting weekly brainteasers on the Northwood sign; a sign that's poised prominently on Gulf Road in Elyria. Passers-by would eagerly await each week's question and often phone the school's main office with their trivia question guesses. Mr. B brought some of his trivia books to this show to test OUR knowledge. The result of which will only be revealed by tuning in. Happy listening!
The COVID-19 pandemic took center stage in 2020, heightening safety concerns, halting everyday activities and occupations, and completely upending the school year for students, parents and school staff everywhere. Elyria Schools Superintendent Ann Schloss talks about how the district has coped during the crisis, and its continuous trek toward recovery. In chatting, she also highlights the new-school-construction project in Elyria and Elyria Township and hints at exciting things to come in the spring and fall of 2021.

For Keys School Manila's third annual unconference, I did a webinar on Preparing Students for 21st Century Learning: A Focus on Approaches to Teaching and Learning. The webinar poses a simple question "Are we Teachers of Content or Teachers of Skills?" The presentation then proceeded in examining and focusing on the International Baccalaureate's Approaches to Teaching (ATT) and Approaches to Learning (ATL). This focus gives insights into how teachers can prepare students for lifelong learning through careful and mindful planning, thoughtful consideration of learning engagements, and a conscious effort to integrate skills into learning. Since its inception late in 2010, NGLC has invested more than $75 million in a range of “building block” innovations and wholeschool and college degree-program models designed by educators to create more personalized learning and substantially improved outcomes for students. These grants have catalyzed many of the leading new models in postsecondary education (SNHU's College for America and Northern Arizona's Division of Personalized Learning, for example) and K-12 (Summit, Design Tech, Brooklyn LAB, Cornerstone, MATCH Next, Matchbook, USC Hybrid High, and Horry County Public Schools, for example). The NGLC Regional Funds, seven regional or city-based incubators, are using NGLC funds, supports, and modeling to catalyze 70 more personalized, competency-based, student-centered, blended schools – both charters and in-district schools, by Fall 2016. Together, these breakthrough grantees constitute perhaps the nation's foremost network of schools, colleges, and universities creating fundamentally new models of learning and institutional organization. Calkins brings three decades of experience in education reform in leadership positions at Scholastic Inc., where he served as editor of Electronic Learning magazine, Recruiting New Teachers Inc., Mass Insight Education and Research Institute, and the Stupski Foundation. He was the lead author of the influential Mass Insight report, The Turnaround Challenge, which helped to launch the nation's focused efforts to turn around its most consistently under-performing schools and has been downloaded more than a quarter-million times. Calkins writes frequently for national publications and websites and has spoken at education conferences and other events across the country. He earned his B.A. from Harvard College and was a Henry Fellow at Pembroke College in the UK.
