On August 23, 2020, a white Kenosha police officer, Rusten Sheskey, shot a black man, Jacob Blake, in the back during a call for service. Riots erupted. Kyle Rittenhouse, a 17-year old armed with a rifle, shot three men during the riots, killing two. Many were outraged and condemned Rittenhouse as a "white supremacist." Then candidate Biden wrote: "These shots pierce the soul of our nation." Rittenhouse was indicted and charged as an adult. His trial took place during November, 2021. A news camera was allowed into the courtroom. On November 19, 2021, Rittenhouse was found 'not guilty' on all charges. In this podcast, Serge Antonin and Clarke Ahlers discuss what they believe contributed to the incident and whether the case is a statement case about race in America.

Today, we focus on the trial of Kyle Rittenhouse, the 18-year-old young white man who shot and killed Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber, as well as seriously wounding Gaige Grosskreutz. Our guest is Kieran Knutson, President of CWA Local 7250 and has been active in protests in solidarity with George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement. Kieran is based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Also, on Saturday, November 13, the United Nations Climate Change Conference, known as COP26, came to a close. The conference, which took place in Glasgow, Scotland, has been described by many as a failure and a disappointment. Like many of the decisions that came out of the COP26 climate summit, the final agreement has been widely critiqued as being weak and ineffective. Our guest is Tom Goldtooth, the executive director of the Indigenous Environmental Network. Well folks, it not all bad news around here! There's no denying that the Rittenhouse trial is going to make some waves in the area of civil discourse in this country, but for once it seems that justice might actually be served.Any unbiased observer of the events that led up to this case being prosecuted should be able to recognize that the then 17-year-old Rittenhouse was acting in self-defense, and while many may argue that charges should have never been brought, the State may have felt their hands were tied due to outside political and social pressures......and now, it seems, they might be trying to throw the case.The outcome? Well, the jury is still out.
