Tina Davidson, a renowned classical composer with over four decades of experience, embarked on a journey into memoir writing with her deeply moving title, "Let Your Heart Be Broken." Raised in a foster home in Sweden before being adopted by an American mother, Tina's personal odyssey greatly influenced her musical compositions. Her perspective on her memoir is centered around the concept of heartbreak being a transformative experience. Through her own trials with loss, trauma, and major life changes, she urges readers to face their heartbreak head-on. As Davidson sees it, pain can be a catalyst for growth, rebirth, and healing. By sharing her own experiences with composing music and authoring her memoir, she seeks to inspire others to delve into their emotions, connect with their inner selves, and find purpose in their experiences. Ultimately, Davidson's perspective underscores the importance of vulnerability, introspection, and resilience in overcoming adversity. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wvuncommonplace/message

This is a stunningly beautiful conversation with Tina Davidson, author of Let Your Heart Be Broken.  Tina is an accomplished composer. Over her forty-five-year career, Tina has been commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra, OperaDelaware, Roanoke Symphony, VocalEssence, Kronos Quartet, Cassatt Quartet, and more.  Contemplating her decades of achievement, Tina notes:   "I am struck by music's linear process, where duration is the great ingredient. Unlike visual art, music cannot be experienced all at once. Instead, it moves through time. As we listen, we construct the hole in our mind through memory, like a transparent ghost. Music moves our hearts and moves our hearts with its lack of tangible substance."   Tina's story is as astonishing, heart felt and as remarkable as her career. You'll never look at the art of creating music the same way. Come join us.     What they're saying: “This is a beautiful book about life, its imperfections, its challenges, and its joys. It is a book of hope and wisdom for all of us facing a bump in the road.” –Pragito Dove   “Pat has woven together beautiful stories of life setbacks that have been transformed into spiritual growth. This book is a gift and a must-read for souls experiencing pain and yearning for growth.”  –Gary Hensel   Follow Bump on:

“I collaborate with the music.” Composer Tina Davidson explores in her memoir Let Your Heart Be Broken: Life and Music from a Classical Composer, described as “a lyrical reckoning with what it takes to compose a life of cohesion and beauty, out of shattered bits and broken stories.”  In Let Your Heart Be Broken, Tina juxtaposes memories, journal entries, and insight into the life of an artist—and a mother—at work. Along the way, she meets Ernest Hemingway and Carl Sandburg, survives an attack by nomads in Turkey, and learns her birth father is a world-famous scientist. And throughout, there is the thread of music, an ebb and a crescendo of a journey, out of the past, and into the present, through darkness and into the light. Tina is a writer and classical composer, now for 45 years, whose works have been performed by ensembles and orchestras across the country, including The Philadelphia Orchestra, American Composers Orchestra, Kronos Quartet, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Cassatt Quartet, as well as recordings with Albany Music and on Deutsche Grammophon, performed by Grammy winning violinist, Hilary Hahn - all while being a single parent. Her life is filled with experiences that are as amazing as they are touching, heart-wrenching as they are instructive, as she shares her dealing with depression and dissociation, and her work to reclaim herself through therapy and spiritual practice. Let Your Heart Be Broken has also been described as a “lyrical reckoning with what it takes to compose a life of cohesion and beauty out of shattered bits and broken stories” and we discussed her writing process as well, along with forgiveness, grieving and spiritual connection.  Tina has written that “we are, in the end, a measure of the love we leave behind.” I cannot think of any better way to live a life in full.
