The term “quiet quitting” went viral during the summer of 2022 for its counter-narrative to the “hustle culture” mentality. Organizations have traditionally looked for superstar performers who are enthusiastic and motivated about their roles and are willing to go the extra mile. Our workforce is experiencing burnout due to the challenges over the past few years. The traditional level of engagement is hard to be expected from our talent when organizations are not focusing on the true problem. In this episode, we'll dive into insights from our guest, Anna Greenwald, Founder/CEO of On the Goga, on getting to the root cause of quiet quitting and how we can address burnout in our organizations. Aimee B. Prange, MSW, LCSW, a Sr. Clinical Manager and Strategic Planner, and Volunteer for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Greater Philadelphia Chapter discussed their mission and goals, to increase awareness of mental health and prevent deaths by suicide. We began with a discussion of the numbers, while deaths have decreased in some populations more younger people are now affected by suicide. She described their outreach programs aimed at youth and children, including peer support and programs for educators and youth leaders for high school and elementary schools. We spoke of a recent success, the new 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, a free nationwide hotline. Long authorized, it lagged for funding and local coordination, the Biden-Harris Administration increased federal investments in the 988 lifeline from $24 million to $432 million -- to scale up crisis centers and back-up center capacity, and to provide special services, including a sub-network for Spanish language speakers. She notes it's more than a number, 988 is a message: we're there for you with a trained responder available to talk and refer people in crisis or just wanting help for a friend or loved one. Finally, she offered an invitation to join their mission at the 2022 Greater Philadelphia Chapter's Out of the Darkness Walk on Sunday October 2nd at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Artists have found many reasons over the years to name-drop famous people. Most commonly, it's a sign of praise, as they effectively pay tribute to someone they respect and admire. Other times, a name-drop can stoke controversy, igniting or further fueling a fight. Then there are the cases where a name-check is used for creative purposes, helping to establish a song's characters or time period. Well on today's show we are gonna examine several instances and try to better understand how they serve the song or the artist's motives. To help us with the topic today, we have a very special guest on the show! V. Shayne Frederick!V. Shayne Frederick is a vocalist and pianist with performances spanning decades. He's electrified TEDx, NPR, and stages nationally. He is also a faculty member of the University of the Arts, and a current elect to the Governor's Board of the Philadelphia Chapter of the Recording Academy. In this episode, we feature the many movements of stories shared at our recent Celebration of African American Presbyterian Heritage. Anchored by Rev. Dr. Alonzo Johnson, coordinator of the National Committee for the Self-Development of People, this gathering of worship, song, and sankofa, reached back into the history of Black Presbyterianism as we move forward into our call as the church of Jesus Christ in our time and place. In addition to Rev. Dr. Johnson, we also heard from Rev. Dr. Janel Dixon and Rev. Ethelyn Taylor, co-moderators of the Philadelphia Chapter of the National Black Presbyterian Caucus, and our Executive Presbyter, Rev. Ruth Faith Santana-Grace. As a Presbytery committed to empowering Christ's work through our collective witness, we continue to value the varied nature of our churches that have shaped our incarnations of the gospel for over 300 years. Listen now and and lean into our story and song as testified to by Black Presbyterians past and present.

Join Trish and Rob for a conversation with... Alex Miller is the author of "The Black Hole," which details deep space points in astrological interpretation, and the forthcoming “Heaven on Earth”, a comprehensive study of asteroids, both mythic and personal. (And we’ll be talking about how asteroids can be personal, which I think is a mind-blowing concept for many people.) Alex is a frequent contributor to “The Mountain Astrologer”, “Daykeeper Journal”, and his work has also appeared in “Aspects” magazine, “Dell Horoscope”, “Planetwaves”, “Neptune Café” and “Sasstrology.” He is a past president of Philadelphia Astrological Society, and a former board member for the Philadelphia Chapter of NCGR. Since 2005 ,Alex has been working in-depth with minor planetary bodies in the outer regions of the solar system, as well as the myriad of asteroids much closer to home. Again, with a focus on understanding and documentation, Alex has researched both Mythic- and Personal-Named Asteroids, and has been consistently astounded by how closely they resonate to their terrestrial counterparts, as played out in current events and birth charts. It’s a fascinating emerging field for astrologers, bringing specificity and individualization to an art form. He’s also a 10-year veteran of cat rescue work in West Philly; his memoir of that experience, “Cat O’ Nine Tales.” He lives in Nazareth, Pennsylvania with his cats Ashes, Cleo and Charcoal, a large garden, and more seasonal decorations than are good for him. Alex’s expertise is unique and I first became aware of his work in an article he’d written for The Mountain Astrologer.

Edward has previously held positions in New York City (Christ Church, Methodist), Morristown, NJ (St. Peter's Episcopal Church) and in the Mt. Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia (Grace Epiphany Episcopal Church). In addition to recitals at The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine and St. Thomas Church in New York City, and Old West Church, Boston, he has also performed in Germany and Wales as well as on the historic 18th century Andreas Silbermann organ in Strasbourg, France. Edward's achievements as a church musician and performer were most recently recognized when he was named as a member of the “Class of 2017” by The Diapason magazine's program, “20 under 30,” which lifts up young professionals in the world of organ, harpsichord, carillon, and church music. A major interest in contemporary organ music, particularly by American composers, led Edward to commission "E," "Fantasia," and "Parodies" by Kathleen Scheide; "Praeludium" and “Psalm 139” by Pamela Decker; "Prelude on the Carillon d'Alet" by Craig Phillips, and "Exordium" by Carson Cooman. A composer himself, “Flourishes and Reflections – Organ Music for Service or Recital” was recently released by Lorenz. In this conversation, Edward and I talk about his organist career and about his graceful strategy of dedicating his own compositions to other organists and composers. Enjoy and share your comments below. And don't forget to help spread the word about the SOP Podcast by sharing it with your organist friends. Thanks for caring. A longtime activist and patient, Dani Geen is an expert in cannabis concentrates and the healthful aspects of ‘dabbing.’ As a member of the executive team at Harborside Health Center, Dani is privy to the latest products and methods of consumption on the market, and to the evolving science of cannabis medicines. Now ready to share what she’s learned, Dani hopes to remove the stigma of dabbing, and educate other patients and adult-use consumers on its many benefits compared to other methods of consumption. Because her parents were patients, Dani became familiar with cannabis as a medicine at an early age. In high school she began having severe pain issues and subsequently started studying the plant more seriously. In 2006 she was diagnosed with fibromyalgia while attending college for artist management and music tech studies. Lacking medical insurance and not wanting to rely on opiates, Dani turned to cannabis for relief, eventually discovering the powerful efficacy of extracts. In 2008, Dani began working at Harborside Health Center—the nation’s largest model cannabis dispensary, based in California—while finishing school. After a short time in Harborside’s Ombuds department welcoming and orienting patients, she was quickly recruited to the executive management team alongside executive director and co-founder, Steve DeAngelo. While traveling across the country with Steve, Dani was introduced to a titanium nail and Healthstone pipe. She discovered that the higher cannabinoid profiles of the concentrates used by this method gave her the edge she needed to combat her fibromyalgia and to quit smoking cigarettes. She’s now been pharmaceutical-free (and a non-smoker) for nearly six years. Dani is currently exploring the benefits of torch-less e-nails, and concentrates with and without terpenes, preferring live resins, ‘terp juice’ and solvent-less ‘rosin’ or hash oil to flowers. She’s also a knowledgeable and gentle guide for novice dabbers. “Start small and work your way up,” she says. “Make sure you stay hydrated and are in a comfortable area for your first time.” She can be reached at danig@harborsidehealthcenter.com.
Another #CannabisIsMedicineTestimonies is in the books. We had a great time with Stephanie B Thomas from the Philadelphia Chapter of WomenGrow. Women Grow connects, educates, and empowers diverse leaders in all segments of the cannabis industry. Together, they will start over 1,000 women-owned businesses in the marijuana industry. Founded in 2014, Women Grow is now the largest national network of cannabis professionals with Monthly Events for women & men in 45 cities across the US & Canada. Their popular Speakers Bureau ensures diversity at industry events and in media coverage. And no matter where you’re located, you can access our Video Education series. They model corporate responsibility by fulfilling a social mission in a for-profit structure. But supporting women goes far beyond altruism! Women make 80% of healthcare decisions and even consume more alcohol by volume than men. Female consumers will dominate cannabis purchasing in the same way they already control 85% of consumer spending. The inclusive teams creating marijuana products & services that women love will rise to the top as the end of marijuana prohibition occurs on a national scale. Steph also shares her story on how she use cannabis to treat depression and anxiety.
