SpaceTime Series 28 Episode 29The Astronomy, Space and Science News PodcastExploring Callisto's Ocean Potential, Laser Fossil Detection on Mars, and ISS Cleanliness ConcernsIn this episode of SpaceTime, we dive into exciting new research suggesting that Jupiter's moon Callisto may harbor a subsurface ocean, potentially making it another ocean world in our solar system. This revelation builds on data from NASA's Galileo spacecraft, which hinted at the presence of a salty liquid water ocean beneath Callisto's icy crust. Advanced modeling techniques have strengthened these claims, setting the stage for further exploration by NASA's Europa Clipper and ESA's Juice missions.Lasers on Mars: Searching for Ancient LifeWe also discuss innovative research that proposes using lasers to identify ancient microbial fossils on Mars. Scientists have successfully detected microbial fossils in gypsum on Earth, raising hopes that similar techniques could uncover evidence of past life on the Red Planet. The findings suggest that gypsum deposits on Mars could conceal traces of ancient life, preserved in mineral formations that formed when water evaporated billions of years ago.Health Implications of Sterility on the ISSAdditionally, we explore a new study indicating that the overly sterile environment of the International Space Station may be negatively impacting astronaut health. The research suggests that introducing a diverse range of microbes could potentially alleviate immune dysfunction and other health issues experienced by crew members during long missions in space.00:00 Space Time Series 28 Episode 29 for broadcast on 7 March 202500:49 New findings on Callisto's potential subsurface ocean06:30 Implications for future missions to Jupiter's moons12:15 Using lasers to detect ancient life on Mars18:00 Analysis of gypsum deposits and their significance22:45 Concerns regarding ISS cleanliness and astronaut health27:00 Overview of March's night sky and celestial events30:15 Celebrating PI Day and its significance in astronomywww.spacetimewithstuartgary.comwww.bitesz.com

Jupiter is like a mini solar system. The Sun’s largest planet has a family of almost a hundred known moons. Most of them are little more than cosmic flotsam – chips of rock and ice no more than a couple of miles wide. But a few rank among the most interesting worlds in the solar system. The four largest moons are Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. They account for more than 99.9 percent of the combined mass of all of Jupiter’s moons. They probably formed along with Jupiter itself, from dust and gas that encircled the newborn planet. Io is the most volcanically active body in the solar system. It’s covered by hundreds of volcanoes, lakes of molten lava, and other features. The other three big moons appear to have oceans of liquid water buried below their icy crusts. And Europa’s ocean is considered one of the most likely homes for life in the solar system. Some of Jupiter’s little moons could have formed at the same time as the big guys, then perhaps moved into different orbits. But most of them appear to be the remains of asteroids that Jupiter captured when they wandered close. The asteroids were blasted apart in big collisions, leaving small chunks of ice and rock in orbit around the planet. Jupiter is low in the east-northeast at nightfall, and climbs high overhead during the night. It looks like a brilliant star. Through binoculars, the four big moons look like tiny stars lined up near the planet. Script by Damond Benningfield

On this week's edition of the Flavors of Northwest Arkansas podcast, we talk with Todd and Marti Martin. They own Theo's in Fayetteville and Rogers, the East Side Grill, Tuskers Tavern and the Southern Food Company, which was their first restaurant. Before that interview, we hear from Odd Soul owner Jeffro Brown about something that they have going on this week. On Thursday, they'll be starting campaigns to pre-buy pizzas for those in the area that aren't as fortunate. They'll also be hosting a fundraiser to help erase one school's lunch debt. Again, it happens tomorrow, Thursday November 21st from 5 to 9 at the Odd Soul in downtown Springdale. And there's something going on tonight (if you're listening to this on Wednesday, November 20th)! Callisto in Bentonville is having their grand opening from 4 to 11pm. 10% of all proceeds will go to Gather to Scatter- a non-profit committed to gathering community resources and extending them to those in need. Would absolutely recommend getting reservations as it's already a very popular place! Now back to Marti and Todd Martin. They're retirees, but they're not old. In fact, they might be busier now than they were before retiring. They met at the UofA, got married and had 3 girls. They'll talk about their professional careers and how they ended up back in Fayetteville. And why the restaurant business? The answer may not be what you think. As their first restaurant, how did they get the Southern Food Company off the ground with no restaurant experience? They'll talk about that. Todd and Marti bought both Theo's locations and the East Side Grill during Covid. How and why?? There's a pretty good answer. Finally, why did they open Tuskers Tavern right behind East Side Grill? Some fun stories with Todd and Marti Martin, next, here on the Flavors of Northwest Arkansas!

Beginnings is the sixth (and second to last) book in the Worlds of Honor anthology set. It contains five short stories, penned by four talented authors: David Weber, Charles E. Gannon, Timothy Zahn, and Joelle Presby. Each of these stories brings us to interesting and important beginnings for many events that we've become familiar with in the Honorverse but have often gone with little or no explanation. This collection of writings comes in at 377 pages and was first published by Baen in June 2013.Charles E. Gannon brings the first story to us: By the Book.In this story we join the crew of Earth Union Customs Patrol ship Venerated Gaia commanded by Lieutenant Lee Strong in 250 PD. Their mission: board and recover a hijacked ship named Fragrant Blossom, a ship they've located and seized near the Sol System asteroid belt. Once the ship is captured and under their control, a series of non-standard events results in Lieutenant Strong coming into contact with an administrator working for the Outbound Operations Administration, a somewhat quiet and shadowy man named Perlenmann. Mr. Perlenmann seems to have been effectively benched professionally and is sent to his current post on Jupiter's moon Callisto, primarily due to what those holding (somewhat authoritarian) political power deemed to be his radical views. It's from this position of relative obscurity we learn that Mr. Perlenmann is an influential member of an organization plotting to bring the current political elite and their parties to their knees by causing an economic collapse across the Earth Union and Sol system. He recruits Lieutenant Strong to deliver the necessary computer program, causing a catastrophic collapse, which results in the related loss of power of the controlling political parties and the disintegration of the Earth Union. With the passage of time, the collapse is eventually referred to as the Economic Winter of 252 PD. When the economy recovered as a much freer and open economic system, it spawned powerful growth that enabled the remarkable beginning of the movement of humanity out of the Sol system and into the stars.Your hosts gave this story two ‘thumbs-up” and one “neutral” vote.Next we discussed Timothy Zahn's short story A Call to Arms. We move forward in time now, over a thousand years, to 1543 PD. Following the recovery from the Economic Winter of 252 and the subsequent expansion, we see a Solarian Axelrod Corporation plan unfolding to attack the Manticore System through the use of mercenaries. At the same time, we join a young Lieutenant Travis Long onboard the HMS Phoenix. When he writes up a subordinate for substandard performance, he finds himself the one who's in trouble and he's transferred to a different ship, the HMS Casey. It turns out the poor performer is from a politically and militarily powerful family. What appears to be bad news for Lieutenant Long turns into a blessing as the mercenaries arrive in the Manticoran system. Now confronting the enemy, his strength as a tactician shines as he's key in defeating the threat. The “misstep” while onboard the Phoenix quickly and quietly moves to the background as his new captain nominates him for the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal. He also learns a powerful lesson from Captain Heissman about being aware of and getting used to the existence of internal politics within the RMN.Of note, this story is the beginning of more time we'll spend with Lieutenant Travis Long. Our introduction to him here sets up seeing a lot more of him in the “Manticore Ascendant” series of novels, by the dynamic writing duo of David Weber and Timothy Zahn. This one received “thumbs-ups” from each of your hosts, with a bonus “two thumbs up” from Raul.Beauty and the Beast is the third...
On this week's edition of the Flavors of Northwest Arkansas podcast, we hop over to Siloam Springs and to the Park House Kitchen + Bar, where we interview owner/operator Alma Sanchez. But before we got into that interview, we wrapped up Top Chef NWA 2024 benefitting the Rogers Public Library Foundation. We'll hear from the winners and have some news about a popular new part-owner of a Springdale restaurant. Also, this coming weekend will be a popular grand opening weekend in Bentonville. Callisto will be opening on Friday (check out our Facebook/Instagram for our soft opening story) and Brothers Meethouse will be opening on Friday in the Market District. We'll hear from them. So glad that we got to the Park House Kitchen + Bar in Siloam Springs. Really enjoyed the interview, the space, and the food! For those that haven't been there, Alma Sanchez has an amazing place in the downtown historic district right by the City Park & Gazebo and Sager Creek. She was raised in the restaurant world and grabbed the opportunity of the Park House when it unexpectedly became available, just a few weeks after sitting on the porch there, wondering aloud how cool it would be to own the place. It used to be a hotel, and still kind of is. Alma will explain that. She also talks about how they came up with the menu for the place. They thought outside the box for this one and it worked out well. She talks about how they pivoted to survive covid, and how that kept her from having to lay anyone off. Also, any place that has brunch on the weekends, chicken and waffles, and a Monte Cristo has my attention! We talk to Alma Sanchez from Park House Kitchen & Bar, next, here on the Flavors of Northwest Arkansas.
It's back to Ovid this week in the bunker for two more ingenious tales of transformation. We start in Book I by chewing our cud and patting our 8 tummies. It's the tragic bovine metamorphosis of Io, and the mournful response of her father, Inachus. Here we see the first internal writer and reader within the poem, as daughter reveals herself to dad by hoof-scratching her name in the dirt. Is this also the origin of Roman mourning rites? Then it's a sylvan sashay back to the woods, where Jupiter (once again) is up to no good and Juno is (once again) directing her vengeance elsewhere, turning Callisto, her husband's unwilling (once again) paramour, into a bear. What kind of gods are these? What place for mortals in all this? Is the transformation into a part of nature a blessing or a curse? And finally, has anyone located the edible, pulverized, skeletal muscle portion of the bullock?
Welcome true believers to X-Men Horoscopes where each week our host Lodro Rinzler is in conversation with a special guest to discuss the X-Men issue that aligns with a significant month and year from their life and what that issue reveals about their future. Joining us this week is long-time friend of our host/medical professional/voodoo practitioner and guide Marina Acosta to discuss a very BDSM Morlock wedding. Angel has been kidnapped and is destined to marry Callisto, leader of the Morlocks...unless the X-Men can come in at that point where an officiant goes "Does anyone object?" and save the day that way. Also in this issue: American voodoo traditions - Marina is kinda on the Morlocks' side and also sort of confused by how comics work Cyclops is upset about Madelyne Pryor looking exactly like his dead ex girlfriend...but gets over it in one minute flat the X-Men consistently forget that the Morlocks exist the moment they are out of sight Nightcrawler has a beautifully symmetrical face What do Cyclops and Caliban have in common (they both have been worn as sweaters except for Cyclops - bad joke sorry)? a truly beautiful knife fight Cyclops loves wearing sunglasses at night And we answer the question our guest asks: "Are the X-Men good guys?" Marina Acosta is a full scope primary care nurse practitioner, specializing in polycystic ovarian syndrome and ADHD. Separately, she is a New Orleans Voodoo practitioner, focused on honoring traditional rituals, ingredients, and recipes. She is a mom, a wife and a collector of stationary. Here's her Instagram! More of Lodro Rinzler's work can be found here and here and you can follow the podcast on Instagram at xmenpanelsdaily where we post X-Men comic panels...daily. fWotD Episode 2723: Galileo project Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Friday, 18 October 2024 is Galileo project.Galileo was an American robotic space program that studied the planet Jupiter and its moons, as well as several other Solar System bodies. Named after the Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei, the Galileo spacecraft consisted of an orbiter and an atmospheric entry probe. It was delivered into Earth orbit on October 18, 1989, by Space Shuttle Atlantis on the STS-34 mission, and arrived at Jupiter on December 7, 1995, after gravity assist flybys of Venus and Earth, and became the first spacecraft to orbit Jupiter. The spacecraft then launched the first probe to directly measure its atmosphere. Despite suffering major antenna problems, Galileo achieved the first asteroid flyby, of 951 Gaspra, and discovered the first asteroid moon, Dactyl, around 243 Ida. In 1994, Galileo observed Comet Shoemaker–Levy 9's collision with Jupiter.Jupiter's atmospheric composition and ammonia clouds were recorded, as were the volcanism and plasma interactions on Io with Jupiter's atmosphere. The data Galileo collected supported the theory of a liquid ocean under the icy surface of Europa, and there were indications of similar liquid-saltwater layers under the surfaces of Ganymede and Callisto. Ganymede was shown to possess a magnetic field and the spacecraft found new evidence for exospheres around Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. Galileo also discovered that Jupiter's faint ring system consists of dust from impact events on the four small inner moons. The extent and structure of Jupiter's magnetosphere was also mapped. The primary mission concluded on December 7, 1997, but the Galileo orbiter commenced an extended mission known as the Galileo Europa Mission (GEM), which ran until December 31, 1999. By the time GEM ended, most of the spacecraft was operating well beyond its original design specifications, having absorbed three times the radiation exposure that it had been built to withstand. Many of the instruments were no longer operating at peak performance, but were still functional, so a second extension, the Galileo Millennium Mission (GMM) was authorized. On September 20, 2003, after 14 years in space and 8 years in the Jovian system, Galileo's mission was terminated by sending it into Jupiter's atmosphere at a speed of over 48 kilometers per second (30 mi/s) to eliminate the possibility of contaminating the moons with terrestrial bacteria. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:37 UTC on Friday, 18 October 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Galileo project on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Danielle.

We got passionate and informed in this episode.I had the honor of hosting @TracyDeTomasi, CEO of Callisto, a survivor-founded nonprofit that has been able to create an encrypted platform allowing sexual assault survivors to find others harmed by the same perpetrator, without requiring them to report or come forward publicly. With a match in the Callisto Vault system, survivors receive free and confidential legal options counseling. This is a win-win-win and yet – with all of the money and resources in the world - Callisto is at risk of closing their doors. How can this be?We dive into a very REAL conversation about what's at stake. Activist, educator and Jeffrey Epstein survivor, Jess Michaels, underscores the fact that surviving sexual assault is difficult on many levels - but it is made a bit easier when you aren't alone in it; Callisto is a force for healing in that sense. The three of us converse boldly about the REAL good being done and the voices and financial backing needed to continue that important work. Join me, Jess, Tracy and the team as we imagine a world in which survivors of sexual violence are supported and empowered to find healing and justice on their own terms. We hope you will join in this important conversation…Resources mentioned in this episode:TED Talk: The reporting system that sexual assault survivors want | Jessica Laddhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orumugzJpt0Previous season episodes with guest, Jess Michaels:Surviving Epstein; Normalizing Our Response to Sexual Assault - part 1https://www.listenforreal.com/surviving-epstein-normalizing-our-response-to-sexual-assault-part-1/Surviving Epstein; Normalizing Our Response to Sexual Assault - part 2https://www.listenforreal.com/surviving-epstein-normalizing-our-response-to-sexual-assault-part-2/Our Guests:Tracy DeTomasiTracy has held leadership positions over the past 20 years, across the nonprofit sector, where she developed and implemented trauma-informed programming and curricula. She was instrumental in changing domestic violence laws in the US and has worked on projects globally with The Commonwealth of Nations, Ecuador, Australia, The United Kingdom, South Africa, and Ghana. Previously, Tracy was the Co-Founder of Good People Collective, the Interim Executive Director at NO MORE, and the VP of Domestic Violence Services at the YWCA.As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Tracy has extensive experience working in the field of gender-based violence, giving her a deep understanding of the ecosystem of survivors, offenders, and allies. She has consulted with organizations to develop tech-based tools, such as an app that educates users about violence against women, a smartphone device for sexual violence prevention safety, and virtual reality trainings to address Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and Anti-Sexual Harassment.Website: https://www.projectcallisto.org/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/callisto/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/callistoorgLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/callisto-tech-to-combat-sexual-assault/ Jess Michaels is a dance industry professional with 30 years experience as a performer, educator, and entrepreneur. She is also a 1991 survivor of sexual assault by Jeffrey Epstein and childhood sexual abuse. Shockingly, her healing journey began December 14, 2012, after she and her hometown of Newtown CT were devastated by the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Jess not only witnessed the impact of mass tragedy all around her but also experienced the full force of her past trauma catching up to her. In 2015, Jess found immense purpose and hope when she joined Dylan's Wings of Change, a foundation dedicated to Dylan Hockley, one of the first-grade victims in the mass shooting. She helped develop the Wingman program for dance studios, sports, and schools and her work as a speaker & educator on empathy, inclusion, and community-building began. It was there in Newtown, teaching dance classes and working alongside brave parents who lost their children, Jess began to connect the value of shame-free, community-based early trauma intervention to the needs of sexual assault survivors. The 2019 arrest of Epstein motivated her to finally confront her past. Breaking her #MeToo silence, she channeled her own healing journey into action.Today, she's the founder and driving force behind 3Joannes SAFR—a groundbreaking Sexual Assault First Aid Certification Course and SA First Aid Kit (mobile app). Through her work, Jess equips communities with the tools to minimize the devastating long-term effects of sexual violence. Her ultimate goal? To ensure no one else loses decades shackled by the ghosts of unprocessed trauma, as she did.Website: https://www.jessmichaelsspeaks.comInstagram: https://instagram.com/jessmichaelsspeaksLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jessmichaelsspeaks?utm_source=share&utm_campaign=share_via&utm_content=profile&utm_medium=ios_app About Jen Oliver:I pursue and create environments where we converse on the REAL stuff that changes us. So we've done a lot of these drafts before, but I don't think we've done one quite like this. This time we're each trying to draft a set of five games that we think you might agree are incredibly overrated. What does that mean exactly? Well that's up for debate too. What isn't up for debate is that you could win $100 just by voting! A European mission to study the moons of Jupiter is getting some help. Even though it was launched on Europe’s most powerful rocket, it’s so heavy that it needs some extra “kicks” to reach the Jovian system. It’ll get two of those kicks this week – one from the Moon, the other from Earth. The mission is JUICE – Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer. It’ll study Jupiter’s largest moons – Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa. All three are made of ice and rock, with vast oceans of liquid water below their crusts. Europa’s ocean is closer to the surface than the other two. And it’s considered a possible habitat for microscopic life. JUICE will make a total of 35 close passes by the three moons. After that, it’ll settle into orbit around the largest moon, Ganymede. To reach Jupiter and its moons, the craft will make several close passes by other bodies – the Moon, Earth, and Venus. During each encounter, it’ll “steal” a bit of gravitational energy. That acts like a slingshot, accelerating the craft. This week’s encounters are the first. JUICE will fly past the Moon, then swing by Earth just a day and a half later. Along with three more encounters in the coming years, that will help JUICE reach Jupiter in the summer of 2031 – beginning a long reconnaissance of some icy moons. We’ll talk about another intriguing icy moon tomorrow. Script by Damond Benningfield
