In this episode, we sit down with David Shaw, a Professor Emeritus in the College of Forestry at Oregon State University, to explore the fascinating ecology and management of Oregon's dwarf mistletoe. While heavy infestations can deform trees by creating massive, dense branch structures known as "witches' brooms"—which can sometimes grow larger than a van—Shaw explains why these plants are actually crucial drivers of forest biodiversity. Learn how these unique structural formations provide vital nesting habitats for wildlife like the spotted owl, and how the mistletoe's aerial shoots act as the sole food source for the caterpillars of the Johnson's and Thicket hairstreak butterflies. -------------------------------------------------This podcast is produced by Dirty Freehub, a nonprofit organization that publishes hand-curated (and great!) gravel cycling Ride Guides. Kafka's Arrival and Why It Matters Detroit moved on offense. Yesterday the Detroit Lions hired Mike Kafka to an unspecified but prominent role. He is the former Giants interim head coach and offensive coordinator. He also coached quarterbacks in Kansas City under Andy Reid with Patrick Mahomes. His calling card is aggressive creativity and adaptability. He has shown he can build an attack around the talent on hand, not just the playbook. With backups at key spots, no Malik Nabers, and a battered line, his offense still put up points. The concepts were fresh. The execution fit the personnel. Petzing's OC Role and the Scheme Blend Drew Petzing is the offensive coordinator. He is most notable for work with tight ends in Cleveland. In Arizona, his plans were limited by personnel, but the structure was sound. Petzing comes from the Kevin Stefanski tree. Kafka arrives from a different West Coast branch. The Detroit Lions are rooted in West Coast principles. Timing and spacing in the passing game matter. So do route combinations, gap and duo runs, and a little zone. Kafka is experienced in aggressive play calls. Petzing can marry that with tight end usage and practicality. The staff must correct a 2024 problem. After injuries, the offense often ran like Sam LaPorta and Frank Ragnow were still in the huddle. Brock Wright is not Sam LaPorta. Anthony Firkser is not Brock Wright. Yet the calls asked them to be. Dan Campbell eventually took over play calling, and the buck landed on him. Now the buck will be shared. Two proven offensive coordinators sit on staff. That should drive faster adjustments and better fits when injuries hit. How Kafka Could Be Deployed if Roles Shift One reason Kafka's title is not set yet: Scotty Montgomery, the assistant head coach and wide receivers coach, is in Baltimore interviewing for the Ravens OC job under Jesse Minter. There is a real chance he gets it. If he leaves, Kafka can step into a senior offensive assistant role that leans into the passing game and receivers. Quarterbacks are covered with Mark Brunell. Another option is passing game coordinator. David Shaw holds that post as of this recording. He came to Detroit through his connection with John Morton after working together in Denver. Shaw's son just transferred to Stanford from UCLA. That could pull him west. It would not be a surprise if the title board changes again before the combine. The Detroit Lions Podcast framed it plainly. The Lions added two sharp minds who value fit, spacing, and flexibility. That should raise the floor on Sundays in the NFL and sharpen the ceiling when everyone is healthy. #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #mikekafka #drewpetzing #dancampbell #westcoastoffense #gapandduo #samlaporta #brockwright #anthonyfirkser #frankragnow #markbrunell #scottymontgomery #jesseminter #davidshaw #patrickmahomes #passinggamecoordinator Learn more about your ad choices. Anything said on this podcast is his personal take — not Atomic's.—From building molecular dynamics simulations at the University of Washington to red-teaming GPT-4 for chemistry applications and co-founding Future House (a focused research organization) and Edison Scientific (a venture-backed startup automating science at scale)—Andrew White has spent the last five years living through the full arc of AI's transformation of scientific discovery, from ChemCrow (the first Chemistry LLM agent) triggering White House briefings and three-letter agency meetings, to shipping Kosmos, an end-to-end autonomous research system that generates hypotheses, runs experiments, analyzes data, and updates its world model to accelerate the scientific method itself.* The ChemCrow story: GPT-4 + React + cloud lab automation, released March 2023, set off a storm of anxiety about AI-accelerated bioweapons/chemical weapons, led to a White House briefing (Jake Sullivan presented the paper to the president in a 30-minute block), and meetings with three-letter agencies asking “how does this change breakout time for nuclear weapons research?”* Why scientific taste is the frontier: RLHF on hypotheses didn't work (humans pay attention to tone, actionability, and specific facts, not “if this hypothesis is true/false, how does it change the world?”), so they shifted to end-to-end feedback loops where humans click/download discoveries and that signal rolls up to hypothesis quality* Cosmos: the full scientific agent with a world model (distilled memory system, like a Git repo for scientific knowledge) that iterates on hypotheses via literature search, data analysis, and experiment design—built by Ludo after weeks of failed attempts, the breakthrough was putting data analysis in the loop (literature alone didn't work)* Why molecular dynamics and DFT are overrated: “MD and DFT have consumed an enormous number of PhDs at the altar of beautiful simulation, but they don't model the world correctly—you simulate water at 330 Kelvin to get room temperature, you overfit to validation data with GGA/B3LYP functionals, and real catalysts (grain boundaries, dopants) are too complicated for DFT”* The AlphaFold vs. DE Shaw Research counterfactual: DE Shaw built custom silicon, taped out chips with MD algorithms burned in, ran MD at massive scale in a special room in Times Square, and David Shaw flew in by helicopter to present—Andrew thought protein folding would require special machines to fold one protein per day, then AlphaFold solved it in Google Colab on a desktop GPU* The E3 Zero reward hacking saga: trained a model to generate molecules with specific atom counts (verifiable reward), but it kept exploiting loopholes, then a Nature paper came out that year proving six-nitrogen compounds are possible under extreme conditions, then it started adding nitrogen gas (purchasable, doesn't participate in reactions), then acid-base chemistry to move one atom, and Andrew ended up “building a ridiculous catalog of purchasable compounds in a Bloom filter” to close the loopAndrew White* FutureHouse: http://futurehouse.org/* Edison Scientific: http://edisonscientific.com/* X: https://x.com/andrewwhite01* Cosmos paper: https://futurediscovery.org/cosmosFull Video EpisodeTimestamps00:00:00 Introduction: Andrew White on Automating Science with Future House and Edison Scientific00:02:22 The Academic to Startup Journey: Red Teaming GPT-4 and the ChemCrow Paper00:11:35 Future House Origins: The FRO Model and Mission to Automate Science00:12:32 Resigning Tenure: Why Leave Academia for AI Science00:15:54 What Does ‘Automating Science' Actually Mean?00:17:30 The Lab-in-the-Loop Bottleneck: Why Intelligence Isn't Enough00:18:39 Scientific Taste and Human Preferences: The 52% Agreement Problem00:20:05 Paper QA, Robin, and the Road to Cosmos00:21:57 World Models as Scientific Memory: The GitHub Analogy00:40:20 The Bitter Lesson for Biology: Why Molecular Dynamics and DFT Are Overrated00:43:22 AlphaFold's Shock: When First Principles Lost to Machine Learning00:46:25 Enumeration and Filtration: How AI Scientists Generate Hypotheses00:48:15 CBRN Safety and Dual-Use AI: Lessons from Red Teaming01:00:40 The Future of Chemistry is Language: Multimodal Debate01:08:15 Ether Zero: The Hilarious Reward Hacking Adventures01:10:12 Will Scientists Be Displaced? Daily DLP: Dan Campbell Speaks - Detroit Lions Podcast

The Detroit Lions Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 6, 2026 25:16

Detroit Lions Podcast: Dan Campbell's F, OC Reset Campbell's Grade and What Comes Next Dan Campbell graded himself with an F. The Detroit Lions missed the NFL postseason. His end-of-year session landed early and it stung. He was blunt about accountability. He is the decision maker. The Detroit Lions Podcast drilled into what that means for the staff and the offense. Campbell would not detail what he wants to move away from. "I don't want to get into that right now," he said. He added that he needs a few days to think and "deep dive some areas" before making decisions. That restraint matters after a frustrating finish. Midseason Play Calling, Game Management, and Risk Campbell took over offensive play calling midseason. That is a different world than starting a season as the play caller. Delegation structures and weekly prep rhythms change. The offense often looked more coherent after the switch. The plans made more sense. Not always, but often. Some choices still need a governor. There were moments to take points. There were moments to dial back the impulse for gadget plays. One example loomed large: a trick look with David Montgomery trying to throw to Jared Goff on third and short in a must-win spot. The line between aggression and recklessness is thin. Closing that gap is part of the offseason brief. Staff Decisions, OC Path, and Line Lessons One conclusion was clear: bringing John Morton back as offensive coordinator cannot happen. If there is a way to soften that blow, a reassignment to tight ends was floated, but he is now at Iowa State after a one-and-done. Either way, the OC chair must be reset. Internal promotions seem unlikely. The staff did not make an in-season adjustment with Hank Fraley, Scottie Montgomery, Mark Brunell, or David Shaw to lighten Campbell's duties. If that was the plan, it would have happened to stabilize the offense and the sideline. The dual role of head coach and in-game play caller proved untenable over time. That reality fueled Campbell's harsh self-grade. The run game also drew scrutiny. Fraley remains a strong offensive line coach. As run game coordinator, though, this was not his best year. Too many assignments demanded blocks certain players could not physically execute. That is a coordination issue as much as a player issue. Some of that traces back to Morton. Some of it sits with the broader design. None of it means rash firings. It does mean recalibration. Campbell referenced lessons tied to Frank Ragnow and how they apply to Taylor Decker. Details were not disclosed, but the implication was thoughtful evaluation, not snap judgments. Decker is expected to speak with Brad Holmes soon. The message across Allen Park is consistent: think it through, fix the structure, and return with a cleaner plan for the next NFL season. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kly7GrUmERU #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #dancampbell #nflpostseason #offensiveplaycalling #johnmorton #offensivecoordinatorsearch #hankfraley #scottiemontgomery #markbrunell #davidmontgomerytrickplay #jaredgoff #rungamecoordination #taylordecker #frankragnow #bradholmes Learn more about your ad choices. Send us a textWhat if the most important leadership job you'll ever hold doesn't come with a test or a title? We sit down with Derek Belch—former Stanford kicker, startup founder, and dad of three—to unpack what real presence looks like, how values take root, and why failing publicly can be a gift to your kids.Derek grew up with parents who made time their superpower. That “time-rich” model frames how he and his wife run the Belch huddle today: clear rules that point to deeper principles, kindness on repeat, and respect for your body and your limits. He shares the tough-love moment that transformed his baseball path at 13, the night he missed four field goals against Notre Dame and chose to show the tape to his kids, and the day he walked off a US AM Golf qualifier mid-shanks—then owned it at home. The throughline is radical accountability: you can't control the bad round, but you can control your response, your repair, and your next rep.We also trace the unlikely origin of STRIVR, Derek's VR training company, born from a Stanford coaching thesis to help quarterbacks process faster. With a nudge from David Shaw, he turned a prototype into a platform used by major enterprises to build skills through immersive learning. Along the way, Derek explains why golf's meritocracy resonates so deeply: the scorecard doesn't care about your résumé, only your work. That mindset fuels his audacious goal to hopefully qualify for a PGA Tour event while leading a startup and coaching four youth teams. If you're a parent, coach, or leader who wants practical ways to model humility, set culture-shaping rules, and turn failure into momentum, this conversation will sharpen your playbook. FOX Sports' lead College Football analyst Joel Klatt reacts to the news that Deion Sanders has reached a 5-year extension with Colorado. Klatt breaks down why making Coach Prime one of the highest paid coaches in the sport is actually a bargain deal for Colorado. He also lays out the reasons why Colorado makes sense for Sanders and what they offer that most programs wouldn't. Klatt also considers the newly available head coach opening at Stanford and whether that is a program that can get back to the glory days with Jim Harbaugh and David Shaw under new GM Andrew Luck. He wraps up the show by ranking his Top 10 Defensive Players in the NFL Draft including players like Penn State's Abdul Carter, Michigan's Will Johnson and Colorado's Travis Hunter. 0:00-2:02 Intro 2:03-14:30 Deion Sanders signs an extension with Colorado 14:31-21:17 Stanford is searching for a new coach 21:18-21:38 Joel Klatt's top defensive players 21:39-22:29 Kenneth Grant 22:30-23:33 Mike Green 23:34-24:17 Jihaad Campbell 24:18-25:20 Mykel Williams 25:21-26:18 Jahdae Barron 26:19-27:03 Jalon Walker 27:04-29:30 Will Johnson 29:31-31:14 Mason Graham 31:15-32:34 Travis Hunter 32:35-34:38 Abdul Carter 34:39-38:21 Potential steals Learn more about your ad choices.
