BIG CAT PUBLIC SAFETY ACT RE-INTRODUCED – NEED YOUR HELP! Congress operates in two year sessions.  At the end of each session, any bills that did not get signed into law “die” and have to be re-introduced in the next session.  Once a bill is introduced, legislators can “co-sponsor” the bill by calling the legislator who introduced it.  The co-sponsor names are published online.  Being a co-sponsor shows support and basically means you are going to vote for the bill if it comes to the floor of the House or Senate for a vote.   We are part of a coalition of animal welfare groups that in February 2012 introduced a federal bill to ban private breeding and ownership of big cats with limited exemptions.  The bill would put an end to the rampant breeding of cubs for petting and tens of thousands of big cats living in miserable conditions in back yards and roadside zoos like those pictured here.  INSERT A FEW PHOTOS FROM THE HOW BIG CATS LIVE DOCUMENT   In the ten months we had left in the 2011-12 session we got up to 60 cosponsors in the House, which was great.  We re-introduced the bill in 2013 and by the end of the 2013-14 session we were up to 119 cosponsors out of the 435 members of the House, more than 25%!   At the end of 2014 our primary Republican sponsor retired.  So in 2015 we have been working on finding a suitable new main Republican sponsor to join our Democratic main sponsor Loretta Sanchez of California.  At this writing we have a great new Republican main sponsor in the House who has not yet been announced and we are working on lining up what are called “initial cosponsors” whose names are submitted at the same time the bill is “dropped” or “introduced.”  In the Senate, our past champion Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut will be re-introducing the bill.   By the time you read this, or shortly after, we expect the bill to have been introduced and have bill numbers in both the House and Senate.  Then, what we need is your help in urging your Representatives in the House and your Senators to co-sponsor the bill.   When you get this, please check the status of the bill at www.StopBigCatAbuse.com.  If it has been introduced, right there you can send an email to your legislators urging them to co-sponsor.  You CAN play a meaningful role in stopping the abuse by helping pass this bill – but it is critical that your legislators know you care!   In addition to sending the email, even more effective is to also make a phone call to the legislator's office staff person who handles animal welfare issues.  For a sheet of simple tips for making a very brief, simple call, email Howard Baskin.  Thanks!  Written by Howard Baskin for the Fall Big Cat Times.   Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story.  The titles are the dates things happened. Big Cats and Public Safety Protection Act  First Introduced   The Captive Wildlife Safety Act law began around 1998 and became law in Dec. 2003, and ever since we have been trying to close the loopholes that allow private ownership of big cats and cub handling.  Thanks to the work of the Big Cat Coalition and the weekly calls Howie has led since our first meeting 7/25/2011, Rep. McKeon and Rep. Loretta Sanchez introduced the Big Cats and Public Safety Protection Act in the House (HR 4122) and Sen. Kerry commits to introducing into the Senate, which he did just prior to the elections.   We had been trying to close the loopholes in the 2003 Captive Wildlife Safety Act on our own and others in the industry; specifically HSUS and IFAW had introduced both state and federal bills, but none could get the traction necessary to pass.  These bills went by several names including the Shambala Act, the Roar Act, Haley's Act, and others.  Now that all of the big animal protection groups were working together we are all hopeful that this common sense bill will become law.  I wanted to just call it the Big Cat Act because the current name is a mouthful, but the group wanted to emphasize the public safety element of the bill.    I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story.  The titles are the dates things happened. Summer’s over and homes are still flying off the market. More and more people are jumping into homeownership. Market Watch quotes consumer confidence rose in July to the second-highest level in 16 years. Americans shrugged off all the drama of President Trump’s Washington, and took heart in the best labor market in a decade. Homeownership rates in the US actually went up 63.7%—the highest rate in three years. The bottom line is that the economy is strong and improving. Interest rates remain low, and employment is high. When combined with the coming demographic shift as more millennials enter the prime household creating years, this suggests that the housing market is on a steady course for the foreseeable future. As a matter of fact, people were surveyed with this question: “What would be the best way to invest your money—money that you wouldn’t need for 10 years or so?” Sure enough, real estate was the No. 1 answer. Another reason why more and more people are becoming homeowners is wealth. According to state representative Loretta Sanchez, homeownership is the first rung on the ladder of wealth creation in our nation. The average worth of a family that owns a home is $225,000, while that of one who is renting is only $5,000. This means that the net worth of a homeowner is 45 times more than a renter. “THIS MEANS THAT THE NET WORTH OF A HOMEOWNER IS 45 TIMES MORE THAN A RENTER.” Of course, because more people are becoming homeowners, the supply of homes continues to be very low. This makes the current market an even better time to sell. That’s why my coming-soon listing program is so vital in this new market. Check out these next stats: Homeowners who sold in the second quarter realized an average price gain of $51,000 since the purchase—the highest average price gain for home sellers since 2007. This represented an average return of 26% on the previous purchase price of the home. Homeowners who sold in the second quarter of 2017 had owned an average of 8.05 years. Additionally, mortgage rates are projected to go up by next year, which could cause some buyers not to be interested in moving anymore. Waiting will cost more in price and interest rate for the buyer, making your home less affordable for buyers, and possibly lowering the value of your home. These next statistics always make me chuckle. The difference between what a homeowner believes their house is worth and what the appraiser thinks its worth is just short of a 2% difference. When selling, I run the home through my pinpoint pricing analysis to make sure that we get the price that the home will appraise for, and save thousands for my clients. San Diego Decides by Voice of San Diego

Unlike presidential debates that are watched by millions, local political debates are rarely televised, yet they offer some of the only chances for voters to hear city and county candidates who will have direct say over so much of their lives. This week we talk about those debates. Local debates happen more than you’d think. Podcast co-host Sara Libby, for instance, moderated a city attorney debate last Monday between Mara Elliott and Robert Hickey. Then Hickey and Elliott met again two days later for another candidate forum in City Heights. As a result, there’s a debate circuit that forms, as our colleague and frequent debate host Andrew Keatts explains. Opposing candidates who see each other night after night become familiar with each other’s talking points and maintain collegial bonds. Unless they don’t: Keatts talks about one of the wilder local debates he’s hosted, our Politifest debate over a ballot measure that will change city election law. We also talk about the U.S. Senate “dabate” between state Attorney General Kamela Harris and Rep. Loretta Sanchez, and share other observations about the history of debating in San Diego. Favorite Things Andy’s favorite thing is the new HBO series “Westworld.” My favorite thing is normal people who far outnumber reporters even though reporters often end up fetishizing working-class Americans, like Ken Bone, the accidental star of the recent presidential debate. Sara’s is Sutter Brown, California’s first dog, as well as a touching Sacramento Bee editorial on mortality and our pets.
