Episode 2574: Rachel Jones highlights how a minimalist playroom not only reduces clutter but also boosts children's creativity, attention spans, and emotional wellbeing. Drawing from personal experience and research, she shows that fewer toys lead to more imaginative play, less sibling conflict, and a deeper appreciation for each item they own. Read along with the original article(s) here: https://nourishingminimalism.com/minimalist-playroom-better-kids/ Quotes to ponder: "Every night we would pick-up, tossing toys in the closet and into the toy box so I didn't suffer from a Lego-related accident in the middle of the night." "The quality of the children's play seemed to be better when fewer toys were available." "It was really quite amazing how much time kids can play with one toy and the only difference was removing the 50 other similar toys from their room." Learn more about your ad choices. JAWS For nearly 40 years, the Journalism and Women's Symposium has advanced the professional empowerment and personal growth of women in journalism and also advocated for more inclusive coverage of diverse experiences and culture. Advance women in the field, is the belief, and you transform the world. At an annual “camp” and other events and projects JAWS is a powerful network of women who support each other through friendship, knowledge, tools and mentoring. Jodi Enda is the Washington bureau chief and senior correspondent for The Fuller Project, where she focuses on the effects of U.S. policies and politics on women and girls in America and around the world. She has covered government and politics at every level, from city hall to the statehouse to the White House and presidential campaigns. She has specialized in women's rights, challenges and emerging power, and lately that means the battle over abortion rights and the influence of female voters. Over her career she has been editor in chief of ThinkProgress; spearheaded CNN's 2016 election book, Unprecedented: The Election That Changed Everything; and covered the White House, Congress, presidential campaigns and national news for Knight Ridder newspapers. Her award-winning work has been published in numerous national outlets, including Vanity Fair, USA Today, CNN.com, NBCnews.com, American Journalism Review and the American Prospect. Rachel Jones holds the title of director of Journalism Initiatives for the National Press Foundation in DC. By her own description she is a writer, a feminist, and a global citizen. She is an educator and mentor as well. Over a 30- year career she has trained young journalists in the US and in Kenya. She has been especially concerned with doing and getting others to do in-depth work on global health issues. Lynn Sweet is the Washington Bureau chief of the Chicago Sun-Times. She's worked on that newspaper for more than 40 years but you've probably also seen her doing political analysis on CNN and elsewhere. She holds a master's degree from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism and is a former fellow at Harvard University's Institute of Politics. She is deeply sourced and richly informed. Washingtonian Magazine picked her as one of the capital's “50 Top Journalists.” Michele Weldon is and has been for more than 40 years a journalist, a professor at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, a storyteller, editor and author. And that's not even counting the neighborhood newsletter she began writing at age 10. She's a prolific author whose 7th non-fiction book “The Time we Have: Essays on Pandemic Living” has just come out.

In Berkeley Talks episode 205, sports journalist Jemele Hill discusses her career at the intersection of sports, race and culture in the U.S. at a UC Berkeley event in January 2020."Sports journalism," began KALW radio journalist Hana Baba, with whom Hill joined in conversation as part of a Cal Performances speaker series. "So you're growing up, you're watching TV, you're reading the papers ... When did you realize that this is a male journalist's space?"I knew that, but I didn't know it," replied Hill, author of the 2022 memoir Uphill and host of the podcast Jemele Hill Is Unbothered. "And this is why — whenever I talk about mentorship, I preach this to both mentees and mentors: The first thing you can give a mentee and the first responsibility as a mentor, you need to give them a sense of belonging."She went on to describe how, when she was in an apprenticeship program for the Detroit Free Press, two women journalists — feature writer Johnette Howard and sports writer Rachel Jones — were assigned to be her mentors."So I never knew that it was something I wasn't supposed to be doing because the very first person I knew that did it was a woman. ... And so because I got that early confidence at the beginning of my career, I just never went through a period of self-doubt, which is totally normal for any woman in a male-dominated space, especially a Black woman. So I was very lucky that I got that sense of belonging early." Later on, Hill discussed when NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick kneeled during the national anthem throughout the San Francisco 49ers' season in 2016 to protest racial injustice, effectively ending his football career. “I mean, the NFL owners are spineless,” said Hill, who worked for ESPN for more than a decade and was named Journalist of the Year by the National Association of Black Journalists in 2018. “I knew Colin Kaepernick would never play in the NFL the moment Donald Trump said his name … One of the few things that a lot of people unfortunately agree with the [former] president about is that Colin Kaepernick should not be taking a knee. So, he [Trump] knows every time he says his [Kaepernick's] name, that it is giving him a level of universal support … that he doesn't experience usually.“And so what does that say about people in this country? … We just celebrated Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, commemorated him. And the same people I saw talking about how great Dr. King was for his nonviolent protest are also the same people who think Colin Kaepernick doesn't deserve to play in the NFL? … But the NFL, I think, as we have seen in the case with Muhammad Ali, as we have seen is the case with a lot of history, 20 years from now they'll be telling a different story. They'll act like all of this never happened.”Listen to the episode and read the transcript on Berkeley News (news.berkeley.edu/podcasts/berkeley-talks).Music by Blue Dot Sessions.Photo by Daniel Stark/ESPN. Girls Going Global is a non-profit organization designed to expose and empower African-American girls through travel and cultural exchange. In our conversation, we discuss what it means to travel abroad as a Black woman, some important safety tips to keep in mind when staying in a foreign country, and the importance of viewing study abroad as a chance for cultural immersion — rather than as a vacation. Suspicions about Arizona's voting returns have been growing for several years. It hit its peak in 2020, in the immediate aftermath of Joe Biden's narrow win over Donald Trump in this swing state. In response, the Arizona state Senate launched what it called an audit of all Maricopa County ballots cast in November 2020. In reality, the organizer couldn't even vouch for the hand count of 1 million ballots. This recount stirred not only conspiracy theories, but also worries from citizens that their ballots were not being counted. Attention switched to the early voting system, which allows people to vote by mail, in the 2022 election. Kari Lake, who lost the governor's race, contends that she did not win because of ballot tampering and is still arguing that point in court, even as she runs for U.S. Senate. As Arizonans head into the newest presidential election, debate continues on the best way to vote: drop off boxes, vote centers, in-person or by mail. These options are the subject of legislation and litigation leading up to the big day in November. This week on Election Dissection, an elections series of The Gaggle podcast by The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, hosts Mary Jo Pitzl and Sasha Hupka examine different voting practices, their origins and their critiques. County recorders for Maricopa and Yavapai, Stephen Richer and Michelle Burchill, discuss how they're keeping constituents reassured this election year. Rep. Rachel Jones, R-Tucson, explains why she's sponsoring a ballot referral to end vote centers. You'll also hear opinions on polling places from Rep. Jake Hoffman, R-Queen Creek, Sen. Bennett, R-Prescott, and Rep. Michael Carbone, R-Buckeye. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
