Over a decade later, she then won a special senate election that sent her to Washington, where she worked tirelessly for gun laws. By the time Feinstein was elected to a fifth full term in 2018, she was the oldest sitting US Senator. Maintaining secrecy can be invigorating, whether you're a child with hidden treasures or a CIA agent safeguarding classified information. However, the more secrets you bear, the heavier the burden becomes. This week's guest, Jane Harman, who served nine terms in Congress and was a ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee after 9/11, understands the weight of secrecy firsthand.   While there are valid justifications for classifying information, Harman asserts that the US government has grappled with an issue of excessive classification for decades. "A bad reason to classify is to protect your turf—you don't want other people to know what you know in order to protect yourself from embarrassment."   The 9/11 Commission revealed that inadequate information-sharing between agencies like the CIA, FBI, and NSA hindered the government's ability to prevent the tragic terrorist attacks. One significant factor contributing to this failure was the over-classification of information. Each year, approximately 50 million documents are estimated to be classified, though the exact count remains elusive—not due to classification, but because the government struggles to effectively manage the vast volume. In the words of former US Solicitor General Erwin Griswold, some “secrets are not worth keeping.”   Subscribe to the GZERO World Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, or your preferred podcast platform, to receive new episodes as soon as they're published.

If your grocery or gas bill weren't enough of an indicator, inflation is here at historic levels. The consumer price index, which tracks how prices change over time, showed a 7% increase at the end of last year, which is the highest jump since 1982. The Biden administration says this too shall pass. But voters are feeling sticker shock and aren't giving the president good marks on the economy despite a strong job market, a low unemployment rate, and rising wages. How did we get here? Are generous stimulus packages and tax credits to blame? Is there a way to move forward on spending bills with inflation in mind, and to get the sign-off of one Democratic senator from West Virginia? Guest host Jeremy Hobson brings on panelists Christine Emba and Alice Stewart to discuss. Next: Voting rights are big on Biden's agenda. On the heels of the one-year anniversary of the U.S. Capitol riots, the president and Vice President Kamala Harris travelled to Atlanta to make their biggest push yet for voting rights. They're encouraging Democrats to do away with the filibuster and get rid of the 60-vote threshold to pass a bill, all to pass comprehensive legislation to expand voting access to Americans. We bring on special guest and former congresswoman Jane Harman to discuss whether that's a good idea, and whether it's risky to excite Biden's base if he can't deliver. Also, high-level talks took place this week between Washington, NATO and Russia amid fears of another Russian invasion of Ukraine. Vladimir Putin's troops are looming over Ukraine's border, and he's demanding that NATO withdraw all allied troops from countries that border Russia. That's a key foreign policy test for President Biden, who's had to deal with many a crisis abroad during his presidency between a trade war in China and an evacuation in Afghanistan. The million dollar question: What should the U.S. do if Putin invades Ukraine? Do economic sanctions even work? And if they don't, what's next for war-weary America? And finally, GOP consultant Alice Stewart explains what's wrong with shopping carts, Washington Post columnist Christine Emba says [Joe] Manchin and [Kyrsten] Sinema aren't really Democrats, and host Jeremy Hobson explains one way the pandemic could be depoliticized.

Congresswoman- turned-Director of the Wilson Center, Jane Harman, joins former Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff as we discuss national security threats and concerns facing the world. Terrorists don't care if you're a Democrat or a Republican. Representing the aerospace center of California during nine terms in Congress, Jane Harman served on all the major security committees: six years on Armed Services, eight years on Intelligence, and eight on Homeland Security. During her long public career, Harman has been recognized as a national expert at the nexus of security and public policy issues, and has received numerous awards for distinguished service. Jane Harman resigned from Congress in February 2011 to join the Woodrow Wilson Center as its first female Director, President and CEO. She is a member of the Defense Policy Board, the State Department Foreign Policy Board, and the Homeland Security Advisory Committee. She also serves on the Executive Committee of the Trilateral Commission and the Advisory Board of the Munich Security Conference. As Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security from 2005 to 2009, Michael Chertoff led the country in blocking would-be terrorists from crossing our borders or implementing their plans if they were already in the country. He was the co-author of the Patriot Act. Before heading up the Department of Homeland Security, Chertoff served as a federal judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Earlier, during more than a decade as a federal prosecutor, he investigated and prosecuted cases of political corruption, organized crime, corporate fraud and terrorism – including the investigation of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. After leaving DHS, Chertoff created the Chertoff Group and provides high-level strategic counsel to corporate and government leaders on a broad range of security issues, from risk identification and prevention to preparedness, response and recovery. “Risk management has become the CEO's concern,” he says. “We help our clients develop comprehensive strategies to manage risk without building barriers that get in the way of carrying on their business.” To RSVP for upcoming events, visit our events page at: https://www.thecommongoodus.org --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

HARLINGEN, Texas - The United States Ambassador to Mexico, Christopher Landau, says the relationship between Mexico and the United States is very complicated, critically important and still has “sore spots” for both countries. Landau was keynote speaker, Friday, May 8, during a Webcast entitled, “U.S.-Mexico Cooperation During the COVID-19 Pandemic and Beyond,” hosted by the Mexico Institute at the nation’s key non-partisan policy forum for tackling global issues, the Wilson Center. According to Ambassador Landau, he is proud of the way some areas of cross-border cooperation have gone smoothly during the coronavirus pandemic. Landau said: “The way we handled the border itself, in the early days of the crisis back in March, I consider to be a real success story.” However, one area that is a point of contention has to do with the definition of the term, “essential industry,” for both Mexico and the United States. Landau said: “I’d say the biggest frustration to me and the thing that this pandemic has laid bare is that we have to do more on the economic front to talk about cooperation on things like essential industries in times of crisis. That has been just a sore area in the beginning.” Landau is calling for procedures to allow for more institutionalized ongoing discussions of that issue.Landau also said that he has learned some lessons.“There are certainly some very legitimate, but compelling, health interests at stake on both sides of the border. The key is to come up with a way protect worker health, without completely stopping economic activity. I think it is possible to walk and chew gum at the same time.”Ambassador Landau is the son of the late, George W. Landau, who served as U.S. Ambassador to three countries, Paraguay, Chile and Venezuela. According thedirector of the Wilson Center, Jane Harman, even from childhood, Latin America has played a major role in the life of Christopher Landau. The Mexico Institute, under the auspices of the Wilson Center, seeks to improve understanding, communication, and cooperation between Mexico and the United States by promoting original research, encouraging public discussion, and proposing policy options for enhancing the bilateral relationship with Mexico.

The Wilson Center's director, president and CEO, Jane Harman, gave the opening remarks."As the U.S. government has implemented a raft of measures to combat the spread of COVID-19, a significant number have been in the immigration arena, touching in particular on the U.S.-Mexico border," the Mexico Institute stated, in a preview of the webinar."The Mexican and U.S. administrations agreed to halt nonessential travel across the border, slowing activity across a closely interconnected and vibrant regional economy."The Mexico Institute pointed out that the Trump administration has also taken a number of unprecedented measures, drawing on powers given to the Surgeon General in 1944 to block the entry of foreign nationals deemed possible health risks."As a result, border officials have expelled more than 10,000 unauthorized migrants and asylum seekers through an expedited process and largely ended access to asylum during the crisis."In their discussion, Reps. Escobar and Crenshaw spoke about the response to the coronavirus pandemic, how it is affecting the border region, and what the future might hold.

The world is changing rapidly - that's the only constant. What's different about how it's changing now? Europe is still mired in a debt crisis and economic slump. But the worst didn't happen and the euro zone is intact. China did slow down, but avoided the hard landing that many feared. And while the U.S. still faces mountains of debt, the economy is growing again and companies are hiring. On the other hand, North Korea threatened a nuclear attack on the U.S. and fired shells into the ocean near South Korea. A bloody civil war persists in Syria, while Egypt and much of the Arab world lurch to (and from) democracy. All the while, fears of energy scarcity are being replaced by visions of abundance. This panel will examine this new world and the tensions that keep policymakers up at night.
