Minnesota Now and Then: Democratic National Conventions in 1984 and 2024 were momentous for women in politics

There's a parallel between the Democratic National Conventions of 2024 and 1984. Forty years ago a Minnesota Democrat was at the top of a history-making presidential ticket. Former Minnesota Senator and U.S. Vice President Walter Mondale was running for president alongside Geraldine Ferraro, a U.S. representative from New York — and the first woman nominated by a major party for VP. Hillary Clinton remembered that moment Monday night in a speech at this year's DNC.Clinton drew a line from former U.S. representative Shirley Chisholm's 1972 run for president to Ferraro‘s bid for VP to her own historic race in 2016 against former President Donald Trump. And she expressed hope that Vice President Kamala Harris can become the first woman president. In Minnesota, a Harris win would also mean Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan would become the first Native American woman governor in the U.S. — and the first woman governor of Minnesota, period. Every lieutenant governor since 1983 has been a woman, across Republican, Democrat, and Independent administrations, but none have held the top job. Ember Reichgott Junge has spent her life involved in Minnesota politics. And she was also at the 1984 DNC as a young, Democratic state senator and a delegate for Minnesota. She joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer to reflect on her time then — and the DNC now.

Dorinda Medley is an Entrepreneur and TV personality. She is a long time member of RHONY and recently RHUGT season 2 based at her home Blue Stone Manor in the Berkshires. She is very involved in her favorite charities and in 2021 released her auto biography Make It Nice. Born in the Berkshires in Massachusetts, Dorinda graduated from college and arrived in New York City, working in the showrooms of Liz Claiborne. She met her first husband and followed him to London to start a family and eventually her own cashmere company, DCL Cashmere. Many high-profile London clients like Princess Diana and Joan Collins became acquaintances, and soon, Dorinda left her mark on London society. Ten years in London also brought her a daughter, Hannah, a divorce, and a wish to return to New York to figure out life in the city as a single mom. In 2005, Dorinda met and married financier Dr. Richard Medley, a former Washington power broker and respected speechwriter to congresswoman and vice-presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro, and together they worked on fund-raising for charitable causes with the likes of Bishop Desmond Tutu, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Secretary Madeline Albright, and President Bill and Secretary Hillary Clinton. After the tragic loss of their beloved Richard in 2011, Dorinda and Hannah found strength in each other and in their loved ones to overcome the radical changes of losing a husband, friend, companion, and father figure. Through perseverance and support from her close friends, Dorinda climbed right back to the top of New York society. Dorinda is always directing her energy and focus into her home, family and friends, church, social engagements, and love for pop culture. In 2019, Dorinda reignited her passion for teaching aerobics, creating and touring with her interactive workout class Dorobics to great success. She continuously gives back to her favorite charitable organizations like Ali Forney Center, Born This Way Foundation, Prevention, Joy.J Initiative, Ronald McDonald House, NYLovesKids.org and Gabrielle's Angel Foundation. Dorinda's passion for entertaining was deeply enhanced with the purchase of Blue Stone Manor, a nine-bedroom Stanford White estate in her native Great Barrington. With a recent flood at the estate, Dorinda was forced to renovate and restore the historic property to get it back to its former glory. Nothing gives Dorinda more pleasure than a weekend or holiday spent with great company, home-cooked meals, and the festive, personal touches she is known for. She enjoys the theater, the beach, the mountains, fabulous parties, a great dirty martini, and all types of fashion—both high-end and high-street—and considers all of her pieces collector's items.  Hiya Vitamins: Get 50% off first order of children's vitamins. Ferraro raised a family and worked as a civil lawyer for 13 years - occasionally doing pro bono work for women in family court. She joined the Queens District Attorneys Office in 1974 heading the new Special Victims Bureau that dealt with sex crimes, child abuse, and domestic violence. Before she made history as the first woman to run for office on a national ticket - Geraldine Ferraro was a rising star in the Democratic Party and a powerful voice in Congress. Elected in 1978 to Represent New York’s 9th Congressional District in Brooklyn and Queens, a seat once held by Joseph Pulitzer and later by Chuck Schumer. In only her second term she served in a prestigious leadership position as Secretary of the House Democratic Caucus - under legendary Speaker Tip O’Neil. A position perviously held by Shirley Chisholm and later by James Clyburn. In July of 1984, former Vice President Walter Mondale made history when he asked Ferraro to join the Democratic ticket as his running mate when he became the presidential nominee to challenge incumbent President Ronald Reagan and his Vice President George HW Bush. One hundred and ninety-seven years after the Constitutional Convention was held in Philadelphia in 1787, a female candidate was finally nominated for national office at the Democratic Convention in San Francisco in 1984.36 years, 6 months and 2 days later Senator Kamila Harris – also the daughter of immigrants, was sworn in as the 49th Vice President of the United StatesLet’s listen to the Honorable Geraldine Ferraro’s historic acceptance speech for the 1984 Democratic Vice Presidential nominationSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/words-matter. Our series commemorating the 19th Amendment ends with the second segment on the first female Vice Presidential candidate, Geraldine Anne "Gerry" Ferraro (August 26, 1935 – March 26, 2011). In this conversation with Ferraro's daughter, documentary filmmaker Donna Zaccaro, Katie takes a closer look at Ferraro The Candidate. When Walter Mondale chose Ferraro as his running mate on the Democratic ticket in 1984, Mondale's campaign got an immediate boost. The mood inside the convention hall was electric. And Ferraro's acceptance speech was dazzling. But she faced a level of scrutiny that her male counterparts simply did not. Nevertheless, she handled some of those patronizing men -- like then Vice President George Bush during their debate -- with just the right mix of respect and humility. In the documentary, Paving the Way, produced and directed by Zaccaro, we learn more about Ferraro's feelings about her place in history and her hopes for the generations of women who have followed her.

Four months after the 1984 presidential election, Geraldine Ferraro visited Minnesota where she was greeted by a large and receptive audience as the guest speaker for the Distinguished Carlson Lecture Series, sponsored by the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota.  Interest was so great that after full capacity was reached in Northrop Auditorium, accommodations were made for a screening at Williams Arena on campus. The speech was also broadcast live on KUOM radio stations throughout the Twin Cities.

Former New York Times political correspondent Matt Bai is out with a new book about the decline of US campaigns and it's a timely read in the cold post midterm winter. Bai's topic is the downfall of Gary Hart, the Democratic Party's 1988 front-runner until reporters working on a tip, staked out his home and turned up what looked a whole lot like an extramarital affair. Bai describes the Hart campaign's unraveling thereafter as a disaster not just for the candidate, but for US elections thenceforth: “The first in a seemingly endless parade of exaggerated scandals and public floggings” that he argues have driven good talent out of politics. While the rest of the world was finished with the Hart story, Bai says he just couldn't get it out of his head. Well here's another, from four years earlier. If, as Bai writes, '88 was the campaign in which, “politics went tabloid,” '84 was arguably the year it became hazing, when the candidate was a woman. While it's barely recalled in media accounts now, in 1984, the GOP mixed misogyny with mendacity and dirty tricks to defeat Walter Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro. Mondale was centrist and dull and Ferraro certainly had her faults, but the first female vp's opponents didn't just stake out her house; they followed her every step, hurling abuse and misrepresented themselves as regular citizens. A Catholic, Ferraro was pro-choice. People posing as regular voters, stalked her route and did their best to drown out her campaign speeches with their heckling. “VP for Death” and “baby killer” were favorite epithets. The language got more brutal from there. The GOP said they had nothing to do with the thugs, of course. An audiotape proved different. On it, pickets could be heard being trained by party operatives to say, “I'm a concerned citizen” instead of “I'm with Students for Reagan.” Looking for the birth of today's “dark money” tactics? You'd do well to look more closely at '84. Bai blames technology and the proliferation of satellite news for the downward spiral of elections, but what the old media lacked in speed they more than made up for in well-organized mob tactics. The scene at Ferraro rallies came back into my head, when I saw a very similar bunch of bullies shut down the vote-count in 2000 in Florida. It's worth noting today, as Democrats wrap up one humiliating election and rush horribly into another, where a woman may, just may be on the ballot. Watch out. If history teaches us anything it's that the gutter tactics we tolerate being used on some today, have a habit of coming back to haunt everyone tomorrow. There are roughly eight million more female voters than male, and more women than men say they are still undecided. Senator Hillary Clinton and Governor Sarah Palin have undoubtedly changed the debate for many women voters, but the question is: how will they ultimately respond in the booth? This week, NOW on PBS travels to the swing state of Colorado to get insight from a diverse group of women. These pro-choice, pro-gun women don't fit into neat categories, but they do respond to issues built around working moms: pay equity, family leave, and child care. On the show, NOW also interviews former vice presidential Candidate Geraldine Ferraro for her take on the role of women in this election. Will the women's vote decide the election?

If you ever needed proof that politics is a kind of war, the next-day's selection of Alaska Governor, Sarah Palin, to join the presidential campaign ticket of Sen. John McCain should erase all doubts. Putting aside the political positions of Palin, her choice was a transparent attempt to exploit disaffected women voters, who felt burned by the decision of the Democratic nominee to choose someone other than Sen. Hillary Clinton (D.-NY) for the number two spot. But transparent doesn't necessarily mean ineffective. For is Sen. Barack Obama's (D. -IL) campaign breaks new historic ground, Sen. McCain is trying to do so as well, by nominating the first GOP woman for the second chair in the nation's history. Notice I said 'first GOP woman' for the post, for Democrats will never forget how former Vice President Walter Mondale in June of 1984 named Geraldine Ferraro as his Vice Presidential pick. In November of that year, Ronald Reagan swept 49 states in a landslide. Now, McCain is no Reagan, and 2008 isn't 1984, but in the 24 years since then women have emerged as pivotal players in the elections. Will Palin prove helpful to McCain's chances? Time will tell. But, where Sen. Obama opted for a safe bet, Sen McCain opted for boldness. Is it bold enough - or too bold? Again, time will tell. Not since (the first) George Bush chose an obscure Senator, Dan Quayle, as his running mate has there been a greater stretch of years between the two sides of the ticket. Bush was 23 years older than Quayle; McCain is some 28 years older than Palin. Now, that's not necessarily a bad thing, but McCain, at 72, ain't no spring chicken. Palin, at 44, could well become the next president of the United States, in the blink of an eye. (c) '08 Mumia Abu-Jamal

Anyone who has been a regular listener knows I was a John Edwards supporter. After John Dropped out of the race, I did a lot of research and soul searching to decide who I would support in the 2008 election. Barack Obama has my full support and endorsement. I believe his message of Hope is something that America and the World are ready for. It is a message we must all get behind and work to achieve it fulfillment. It means lots of hard work ahead for not only our elected officials but for all Americans. I hope you will join me in supporting Barack Obama for President in 2008. In the show I share a letter I wrote to Hillary and a story a fellow Obama supporter sent out to show how Obama's speech on race & politics has affected people. Letter to Hillary Dear Sen., You say you want to be President to be a leader for the American People. Your campaign and rhetoric is showing anything but true leadership. Your negativity and whining to win at any cost are ripping the Democratic Party apart and you seem not to care at all. This is not about another line to add to your resume but about the future of America. In the last month, you have suddenly become the champion of the Florida and Michigan voters when you earlier agreed to abide by party rules when both delegations where denied. You only changed your mind when you realized you were behind in the popular vote and delegate count. Your campaign (which speaks for you) is now threatening to sue the Texas Democratic Party because you lost the caucus part of the Democratic Primary. Sounds like sour grapes or just plain whining to me. Texas is proud to have had the largest voter turn out in decades and more people active in the precinct conventions than ever before. You now want to negate all the hard work and effort people made to attend and do their best to be part of the democratic process because you didn’t win. Is this a sign of leadership or just a spoiled brat acting out? Your callous statement that McCain is a more experienced leader in international affairs and would better handling a crisis than Barack Obama showed that you no longer care about America or the American People but just your fight to stay alive in a political campaign you are losing. The negativity of your “3 AM” ad was a tactic taken straight from Karl Rove’s play book on how to defeat Democrats and should have been beneath you but wasn’t. Your hesitation and vague answer when asked did you believe Barack Obama was a Muslim just added fire to a rumor the Republicans have been spreading for months. Instead of asking for Geraldine Ferraro to step down and apologize for her racist comments about Obama’s candidacy, you let it keep playing out in the media. If someone had stated that you were only in your position because you were female, you would have been the first one screaming at the top of your lungs. At one time, I respected the work you had done and was proud of your candidacy and what you were bringing to the picture in American politics and history. I can only say now that I am ashamed of you and your pettiness. The Democratic Party and the Nation would be better served if you dropped out of the race and saved us all from your fight to stay alive in a race you have lost. You seem to have forgotten the big picture. This is about America- not Hillary. Respectfully yours, refinish69 Worried Democrat A Trip to the Gas Station: No it is not a Curious George Story "Yesterday, as Barack was giving his speech I took a break at work so I could watch. I knew then that it was historic... I knew then that he was so much more than a politician... I knew then he was a visionary. My day went on as usual, finishing work... I came home, changed clothes and went to workout. I wore, as I often do one of my five Obama t-shirts. So I finish working out and it was a tough workout. I was exhausted, sweaty, nasty and just wanted to go home, shower and relax. But I had to get gas and I am so glad I did. I pull in and it was windy as could be and start pumping my gas. Then this huge blue truck with a guy in his forties, beard, rough looking actually gets out. I notice he's staring at me and I'm thinking "ok this is it, I'm gonna get my ass beat right here for being a white, gay, Obama supporter from Kentucky." With a deep southern drawl, he say's: "I like him." "Who? I think" "The man's got it... He's smart... He's real... (insert cursing, anti-Hillary remarks here) and he's got my vote." "That great" I say, not only cause he's supporting Barack but because it looks like my life has just been spared!!! Then I asked him if he saw the speech. "Yup, that's why I'm voting for him... if he can change my mind and let me see the error of my ways... he can sure as hell change this country." "Wow" I'm thinking. Then I remember I had an extra Obama, "yes we can" bracelet in my pocket. I reach in, pull it out and toss it to him, telling him what it is and pointing to the one on my wrist. You would have thought I had just given him a million bucks. Then he does something I will never forget as long as I live. He goes to the back of his truck and slowly peels off a confederate flag bumper sticker, "the south will rise again" right next to a "sportsmen for Bush" bumper sticker and tosses it in the garbage. The ironic thing about all of this is that both the worst experience in my life and one of the best experiences of my life happened at a gas station. As you may recall in 2006 I was stabbed in a restroom at a gas station because I was gay... Barack Obama is our next great President, just ask the gun waving, redneck, that turned out to be one of the kindest people I've ever met, kinda guy who he's voting for. Pass this along as you wish and thanks for reading!!! We can change the world ~ted" Having been the victim of hate crimes not once but 3 or more times before we had a term for them, I understand this young man's story and the hope that Obama's speech gives to many as we see how everyday Americans respond to it. People can call it rhetoric and hype and get tired of hearing Obama and his supporters talk about hope but after the results of the past 12 or more years of divisive politics and politically and religiously endorsed bigotry, maybe hope is what this country needs. TEAM OBAMA .
