The Atomic Blonde and John Wick comparisons are not lost on me, and trust me when I say that I love Atomic Blonde to a similar, but very different degree to the John Wick(s). Because while both use colour very dramatically, and thrive on that ultra stylized violence I clearly have a passion for, while John Wick is all about vengeance, Lorraine Broughton is all about espionage, and Charlize Theron remains one of the most brilliant and bold actors working in Hollywood.Often criticised for having style over substance, and I understand why, but when it's this stylish.... I have zero complaints. The stunts are perfection (mostly performed by Charlize herself) and the music, while mainly from the early 80s, takes this very real depressing end of the Cold War setting and makes it pop with neon funk. James McAvoy is also great. No one says an f-bomb like he does. Atomic Blonde won't please everyone, but it pleases me. A lot. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Action flicks are back in vogue. From the Bourne films to John Wick, these kinetic films have a bit of a throwback to the 1980’s but are in many ways different. Some such as John Wick have the feel of an exploitation film, and not surprisingly, the new film Atomic Blonde is a bit like it, especially since the co-director of John Wick is the director of Atomic Blonde. At the end of the Cold War, spy intrigue comes to the divided city of Berlin. Just weeks before the Berlin Wall’s demise, a MI-6 agent escapes from the East with a list of every Soviet secret agent in the world. After his assassination, a rogue Soviet spy has the list. MI-6 agent, Lorraine Broughton, is sent to Berlin to retrieve the list before it gets into the wrong hands. The movie is based off the graphic novel, The Coldest City, and directed by stunt coordinator David Leitch. Charlize Theron produces this starring vehicle for her. Having come off Prometheus and Mad Max Fury Road, she has re-invented herself as an action star to go along with her many dramatic roles. Set in Berlin in 1989, shortly before the collapse of the Berlin Wall, we find an MI6 agent named Lorraine Broughton on a mission to try to get a much sought after highly classified list of spies working for Western agencies around the world, kept hidden within the case of a luxury watch, in order to prevent it from going to the KGB. Operating in flashbacks as the bruised and fatigued agent divulges the details of her botched mission to her immediate superior, as well as to a bigwig in the CIA, we learn of her covert mission to acquire the list, initially assigned to work with the chief operator in Berlin, David Percival. In the meantime, they must contend with dangerous Soviet operatives, the East German military, Stasi officers, and an unknown double agent working both sides of the Wall.

This week we take a tour around Spain with Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan, and then revisit the cold calculations of murder in 1989 Berlin. Michael Winterbottom's The Trip to Spain is the third in a series of would-be travelogues that blends reality and farce to excellent effect. Brydon and Coogan play versions of themselves, again musing on death, fame, sex - as well as the passing of David Bowie.   In between driving each other to distraction with dueling impersonations, the pair enjoy amazing food lovingly prepared onscreen and go on yet another literary tour, this time following the foolhardy exploits of Cervantes's Don Quixote.  Less literary fun is to be had in David Leitch's Cold War espionage thriller Atomic Blonde - although Bowie *does* of course pop up again. This is Berlin after all.  Adapting Antony Johnston and Sam Hart's comic The Coldest City to the big screen, Charlize Theron stars as Lorraine Broughton, an MI6 operative sent to Berlin to recover a McGuffin taken from a murdered former lover by a KGB agent.  There she encounters James McAvoy's gone-native agent Percival, who clearly knows more than he's letting on, and is tailed by a French agent played by Sofia Boutella.  Complete with a stormer of a soundtrack of 80s hits, Theron carries the picture with a heady mix of cool glamour and a capacity for savage violence.  This week Stevie and Emmet also recommend - Tim Powers's Medusa's Web Birthright by Joshua Williamson and Andrei Bressan Jon Ronson's So You've Been Publicly Shamed

Both writers tell stories of the cold war influenced by their impressions growing up.  First, she talks to Rich Tommaso, writer and artist of "Spy Seal". In "The Corten Steel Phoenix" he tells the story of a seal forced into dangerous circumstances beyond his control. He uses anthropomorphic animals to weave a web of politics and intrigue.  After the break, she has a chat with Antony Johnston on the day the film, "Atomic Blonde" is released. Based on his graphic novel "The Coldest City", Charlize Theron portrays MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton in her very cool, calculated style. He discusses his involvement in the filmmaking process and how much it detracts from and stays true to the source material.
