An attempt to feature five guests resulted in possibly the most chaotic version of the podcast ever. The first two guests were analyst Paolo Pescatore and Danielle Rios, CEO of Totogi, who brought along a cocktail crew to make sure things go smoothly. They eventually made way for Sylwia Kechiche of Opensignal and Mark Giles from Ookla and we even managed to fit in pod favourite Mary Clark of Numeracle at the end. They tried, and failed, to avoid talking about geopolitics and the AI dystopia, but plenty of telecoms was covered too.

Three, Ireland's largest mobile telecommunications provider, has been awarded a number of licenses by Ookla, a global leader in connectivity intelligence. The results are based on an analysis of tests taken using Speedtest in the second half of 2024. Securing their position as a 5G market leader, Three has been awarded Fastest 5G Network in Ireland for the fourth year in a row, Most Consistent 5G Network in Ireland, as well as winning the Fastest Mobile Network in Ireland for the fifth year in a row. Ookla Speedtest data supports that the elements driving Three's success in 5G technology is due to strong network investment, the deployment of new technologies, as well as the clever use of spectrum which provides both voice and data connectivity. To date, Three Ireland has invested over €2 billion in the development of its network, achieving 99% 4G population coverage and over 92% 5G population coverage - providing customers with the highest level of coverage available in the market and securing their position as industry leader. David Hennessy, CTO Three Ireland and Three UK, said: "Three Ireland is incredibly pleased to once again be recognised by Ookla as having the fastest 5G network in Ireland, as well as the most consistent 5G network. Three has invested significant resources into the development of Ireland's connectivity, achieving over 92% 5G coverage and 99% 4G coverage. As Ireland's largest mobile telecommunications provider, we are acutely aware of the demands and requirements for reliable connectivity, whether for remote working, studying, shopping or streaming. Three Ireland will continue to invest and advance its 5G network, providing customers with the greatest coverage, speeds and reliability available in the market." 5G connectivity gives speeds ten times faster than 4G, with lower latency and greater reliability - enriching all connectivity experiences from amplified gaming to increased streaming and download speeds. The adoption of and access to 5G technology brings considerable added value to Three customers in Ireland, enhancing their lives and how they choose to connect. Three Ireland provides 5G connectivity to all customers across all plans, reaffirming the company's commitment to providing exceptional value and ensuring customers have access to the leading technology available today. Three was also the first Irish operator to launch the next evolution of 5G, 5G Standalone, which has the potential to accelerate innovation across industries and unlock exciting possibilities for businesses and consumers. 5G Standalone is the next advancement of 5G technology - meaning the 5G network operates with a 5G dedicated core network, supporting enhanced speeds, providing minimal latency and enabling higher device density and capacity. In contrast, currently all 5G capabilities rely on a 4G radio coverage footprint and 4G core network, so while speeds are quicker and latency has improved, there is still a reliance on 4G.
After a five week absence, the pod returns from its second summer break. They were delighted to welcome special guest Mark Giles, Lead Analyst at Ookla. Iain and Scott had just come from an event hosted by BT/EE so they combine the review and analysis of that news with a discussion of what Mark does at Ookla. That left time to reflect on a piece of ‘fan mail' Iain received and the story that seems likely to have provoked it.

#Spain is a European and World leader in #FTTH Networks. But, how these networks are performing in terns of reliability? Are they matching our expectatives as a #DigitalSociety? A new report from Opensignal defines #FBB Spanish networks as #Moderate, not #Higher. In fact, Spanish networks fall behind #SWE, #NOR or #JP but also #UK. In this #espisode of #Telco #SuperLigero we try to understand this new ranking and to match it with another data sources as Ookla; MedUX; umlaut company; SETELECO. Secretaría de Estado de Telecomunicaciones e Infraestructuras Digitales or CNMC (Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia). The Opensignal analysis includes also a very smart and elegant approach to measure the geographical #DigitalDivide. An concludes that there is a Digital Divide in every single country with Spain number 5 in a shorter gap ranking.

In 1992, while recording Poor Man's Copyright (what most people know as "The Rand and Adam Tape") we improvised a song called "Baby's Head," mostly because we had 15 songs, and wanted to put out a tape with an even number of songs on each side. This is not a song we were particularly proud of, but a certain segment of our fanbase really took a shine to it. While many songs from this tape have been recorded "for real" in the subsequent years, this is one that we always swore we'd never rerecord -- mostly because of our belief that whatever charm the song had was due to its improvisational nature. This has caused the song to take on an unearned infamy, and we've spent the last 30 years amusingly flummoxed when people ask us to play this one live. Over the last few months, we've been experimenting with creating live backing tracks -- using AI to strip the vocals from the songs -- and former Ookla member (and owner of Watchmen Studios) Doug White recently surprised us with this track. He went the other way, stripping our acoustic guitar from "Baby's Head" and adding new drums, bass, and electric guitars under our original vocals, maintaining the "integrity" of the original improvisation, while providing something much more listenable. So what you're listening to are vocals recorded in 1992 and instruments recorded in 2024. Enjoy!

SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service has attracted a loyal user base despite delivering lower download speeds than traditional fixed broadband in both urban and rural areas across the U.S. The recent FCC approval for increasing the transmit duty cycles of its second-generation user dishes promises to improve internet speeds for users in North America. This development, along with the enthusiastic user base, as evidenced by the positive NPS scores from Ookla's survey, indicates a promising future for Starlink as it competes with other satellite internet providers, such as Amazon's upcoming Kuiper project.
