Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universesMarvel Studios kickoffs of the summer blockbuster season in just 2 weeks with the release of Thunderbolts* on May 2. With tickets now on sale, box office tracking and projections ahead of the film's release are forecasting a solid, if not somewhat soft, opening weekend; with most estimates landing between $63 to $77 million. While that is on the lower side for an MCU movie, optimists believe the general lower level of familiarity with the characters on the roster, combined with the positive test screenings, could give the film significant potential and room to grow in subsequent weeks via word of mouth. Elsewhere, Captain America actor Anthony Mackie offered some insights on Avengers: Doomsday while promoting Twisted Metal Season 2 for Peacock, saying, “It's going to give the audience that old Marvel feeling that they always had.”The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the introduction of a new Oscar category for Achievement in Stunt Design, set to debut at the 100th Academy Awards in 2028, honoring films released in 2027. This decision follows years of advocacy from industry professionals, including director and former stuntman David Leitch and stunt coordinator Chris O'Hara, who was notably credited as the first official "stunt designer" for his work on The Fall Guy. While the specific criteria and presentation details are yet to be finalized, this move is seen as a significant step toward recognizing the creative and technical artistry of stunt professionals in filmmaking. However, there is notable disappointment that earlier works, such as Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible series, will not be eligible for this new recognition.HBO has officially announced the adult cast for its upcoming Harry Potter TV series, confirming several roles and actors we've discussed, along with new additions. fWotD Episode 2855: John Wick (film) Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 27 February 2025 is John Wick (film).John Wick is a 2014 American action thriller film directed by Chad Stahelski and written by Derek Kolstad. Keanu Reeves stars as John Wick, a legendary hitman who comes out of retirement to seek revenge against the men who killed his dog, a final gift from his recently deceased wife. The film also stars Michael Nyqvist, Alfie Allen, Adrianne Palicki, Bridget Moynahan, Dean Winters, Ian McShane, John Leguizamo, and Willem Dafoe.Kolstad's script drew on his interest in action, revenge, and neo noir films. The producer Basil Iwanyk purchased the rights as his first independent film production. Reeves, whose career was declining, liked the script and recommended that the experienced stunt choreographers Stahelski and David Leitch direct the action scenes; Stahelski and Leitch successfully lobbied to co-direct the project. Principal photography began in October 2013, on a $20–$30 million budget, and concluded that December. Stahelski and Leitch focused on long, highly choreographed single takes to convey action, eschewing the rapid cuts and closeup shots of contemporary action films.Iwanyk struggled to secure theatrical distributors because industry executives were dismissive of an action film by first-time directors, and Reeves's recent films had financially underperformed. Lionsgate Films purchased the distribution rights to the film two months before its release date on October 24, 2014. Following a successful marketing campaign that changed its perception from disposable entertainment to a prestige event helmed by an affable leading actor, John Wick exceeded box-office projections and became a modest success, grossing $86 million worldwide. It received generally positive reviews for its style and its action sequences. Critics hailed John Wick as a comeback for Reeves, in a role that played to his acting strengths. The film's mythology of a criminal underworld with rituals and rules was praised as its most distinctive and interesting feature.John Wick began a successful franchise which includes three sequels (John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017), John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019), and John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)), the prequel television series The Continental (2023), and the spin-off film Ballerina (2025), as well as video games and comic books. It is seen as having revitalized the action genre and popularized long single takes with choreographed, detailed action. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:56 UTC on Thursday, 27 February 2025.For the full current version of the article, see John Wick (film) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Stephen.

OSCAR-winning actor Ke Huy Quan, originally of Temple of Doom and Goonies fame, has made an epic Hollywood comeback over the last few years. Now, he's leading his very own movies. Love Hurts is the latest production under 87 North, the same people behind the original John Wick, Violent Night and Nobody. It's also being directed by a stuntman and Quan himself, during his near 4-decade absence from the silver screen, worked sometimes as a stuntman. I'm just so happy for him and most of my excitement for this one comes from seeing him be put fully into the spotlight. Is Love Hurts a must-see action film in theater? Find out in this review!Love Hurts:Directed by: JoJo EusebioWritten by: Matthew Murray & Josh Stoddard and Luke PassmoreProduced by: Kelly McCormick, David Leitch, Guy DanellaExecutive Producer: Ben OrmandMusic by: Dominic LewisCinematography by: Bridger NielsonProduction Design by: Craig SandellsCostume Design by: Patricia J. HendersonCast: Ke Huy Quan, Ariana DeBose, Daniel Wu, Sean Astin, Mustafa Shakir, Lio Tipton, Rhys Darby, Marshawn Lynch, André EriksenSynopsis: A realtor is pulled back into the life he left behind after his former partner-in-crime resurfaces with an ominous message. With his crime-lord brother also on his trail, he must confront his past and the history he never fully buried.
They say the stunt man gets no respect. Out of all the things that are in movies, they are unrecognized at the Oscars. Many times folks have tried to push for an award and category for the stunt men and women and yet each year it never happens. THE FALL GUY, a film from 2024, actually turns the stuntman into one of the main characters. From Rotten Tomatoes: “He's a stuntman, and like everyone in the stunt community, he gets blown up, shot, crashed, thrown through windows and dropped from the highest of heights, all for our entertainment. And now, fresh off an almost career-ending accident, this working-class hero has to track down a missing movie star, solve a conspiracy and try to win back the love of his life while still doing his day job. What could possibly go right?”THE FALL GUY is directed by former stuntman David Leitch, who is best known for directing JOHN WICK (2014), ATOMIC BLONDE (2017), DEADPOOL 2 (2018), BULLET TRAIN (2022), among others. Written by Drew Pearce and starring Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling, the movie received fantastic reviews from critics and audiences alike. Though it wasn't the phenomenal box office success the producers had hoped, the movie has gotten a second life on streaming. Your co-hosts take a look at the film and give their thoughts.
Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes The topic of Captain America reshoots is one we've discussed a lot and recently Cap himself Anthony Mackie addressed reshoot and poor test screening rumors head on, telling Empire “It wasn't retooled at all, every Marvel movie I've done has done reshoots, so it's not retooling or remaking. You basically get the movie and the story you want, you edit it together, then go back and shoot a few more scenes." Since last week, The Hollywood Reporter has also finally revealed that the total budget of the film is significantly less than previously thought - coming in at around $180 million dollars. Switching to the Sorcerer Supreme himself, Benedict Cumberbatch made some headlines after revealing in an interview with Variety that Doctor Strange will not be in Avengers: Doomsday. Cumberbatch cited the reason being Strange's character “not aligning with this part of the story,” and also let loose that the Master of the Mystic Arts will be in “a lot” of Avengers: Secret Wars. In typical James Gunn fashion, the director and DC Studios co-chair gave us a first look at Milly Alcock's Supergirl in a still photo he released on social media last week. The post also confirmed filming recently began. The weekend's NFL division championships provided space for a new-ish Superman trailer, with mostly the same footage, but a different look at Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luther. And in our final DC news nugget, actor Ulrich Thomson was cast as villain Sinestro for the upcoming Lanterns series. Thomsen is a Danish actor who was seen in The Blacklist here in the states. In comics, Sinestro is Hal Jordan's mentor. The Oscar nominations were unveiled last week after a brief delay caused by the devastating and ongoing fires in California. Leading the pack this year is Emilia Pérez, earning an impressive 13 nominations despite ongoing controversy surrounding the film's portrayal of cultural identity, which has sparked heated debates online. Close behind are The Brutalist and Wicked, tied with 10 nominations each and A Complete Unknown and Conclave earned eight nods apiece. On the studio front, Netflix emerged as the frontrunner with 16 total nominations, followed by A24 with 14, Universal with 13, Focus Features with 12, and Searchlight with 10. However, the announcement wasn't without its surprises—or disappointments—as some fan-favorite films, including Challengers, Furiosa, and Civil War, were notably snubbed. Warner Bros unveiled a new official trailer for SINNERS from director Ryan Coogler and frequent collaborator and star Michael B. Jordan, the film will hit theatres April 18. David Leitch — the stuntman turned director behind John Wick and The Fall Guy — is in talks to direct Ocean's 14. The film is expected to return original Ocean's 11 cast members George Clooney and Brad Pitt, among others. Neon has released the first trailer for horror film Hell of a Summer, starring Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard, who is also making his directorial debut. The film debuts in theaters on April 18. HBO has renewed anthology series The White Lotus for a fourth season. The third season will begin streaming on February 16. Focus Features, Universal's art house division which released and financed Nosferatu, is reteaming with Robert Eggers for his next film titled Werwulf, currently set for release on Christmas Day 2026. While details are scarce, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the story is set in 13th century England. George Nolfi, known for his screenplay work on movies such as The Bourne Ultimatum and Ocean's 12, has been tapped to write New Jedi Order, the Daisy Ridley-centric Star Wars movie. The move to Nolfi makes the third writer change for the project.
Can we have fun? David Leitch says YESSSS. Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham spend two hours trading kindergarten-level insults about each other's height and baldness while saving the world from a techno-virus and Super Smart Idris Elba. Being a Fast & Furious movie, we obviously have FAMILY with Venessa Kirby and Helen Mirren… So we're now up to 5 perfect people to cast in a movie. Sprinkle in Ryan Reynolds, Kevin Hart, Rob Delaney, Cliff Curtis, Eiza González. I mean, you had us at David Leitch. But the cast of this thing is everyone we want to hang out with for two hours. So… That means it's time for a new Great Bad Movies episode. We're celebrating John-uary with a puppy-avenging assassin who's also the emotional victim of car theft. Keanu Reaves has to return to a luxury murder hotel to drop some gold coins (Chuck E. Cheese-style) again. Keanu called his favorite stunt guys, David Leitch and Chad Stahelski, who say they'll only do the stunts if they can also direct for the first time. You know what all that makes? A game-changing new era of Great Bad Movies. Keanu Reeves delivers the most emotionally devastating "Yeah" in cinema history, and funniest line in this movie is “Oh.” Twice. So it's time to start Dafoe-ing and check in with Joe and Greg, who have the conversation that needed to happen about a movie that slowly but thoroughly changed the lives of everyone in the GBU (Great Bad Universe.) They ask the important questions, create unique drinking games… Basically everything you'd need to live a better life. HE JUST LIKE US FR! With a lot of films pushed back due to the 2023 strikes, the coveted month of May saw an unusual dry spell of big blockbusters, one that hadn't been seen since the pandemic. However, one movie managed to nab the first weekend slot that Disney had the monopoly on for four years -- David Leitch's The Fall Guy. This film didn't receive a whole lot of commercial buzz around the time in spite of its release date, but what exactly were people missing out on? Come join Brian and Alec to find out as they dive into a tribute to the unsung heroes who take the hard hits on sets -- THE FALL GUY!
Wiz DOES NOT RECOMMEND The Fall Guy It was pretty easy to see what The Fall Guy was trying to emulate to get it's laughs and entertainment: Tropic Thunder. Tropic Thunder got its laughs not only by lampooning the film industry, its vapid stars and celebrity culture, but it also did it by having ridiculous humor that was often vulgar and offensive. It has a biting edge to it that, even to this day, it's a film that is often talked about as one of the funniest films in the last 20 years. So, yeah, it makes sense that Tropic Thunder would be the film that The Fall Guy would take the formula from and put its own spin on it. Sadly, the spin is to take the biting, vulgar humor, wash it out clean and replace it with so much referential movies quips and throw in a puddle deep meta layer that the cleverness it thinks it employs is really insultingly basic. Films that want to skewer the movie making industry have to come up with more than "actors are vapid". Hell, even films that aren't about filmmaking often employ the "actors so dumb" trope. But The Fall Guy doesn't really say anything new that films like Adaptation. and Hail, Ceasar haven't already said before. Hell, even Entourage had deeper commentary than The Fall Guy. But wait, you might be thinking "well who cares if it's entertaining, is the film fun or funny?" The answer is no on both counts: even without watching The Extended Cut on Peacock (at an eye watering 2 hours 30 minutes), this film is over two hours long and it really didn't need to be as long as it is. And on top of that, the film has an issue of contrasting its light sense of humor with the darker, edgier elements the film is employing, such as drug use and scenes involving dead bodies. Add to the top of all of those issues: the plot and story is way too convoluted for a film that doesn't need to be as complex as it is. As an action comedy, the stunts and action are fine enough (which is funny considering this is a film about a stuntman) but the long in the tooth mystery that the movie uses to keep the twists coming just gets too complex for a story that isn't really deep about anything. And yet...on top of all of that...the film has a problem with the rules of the world it's creating. There are two worlds that the film sets itself in: the world of filmmaking and "the real world". The world of filmmaking is easy enough to explain, but the real world is where the issues come in. The main character Colt (Ryan Gosling) suffered a catastrophic back injury because of a botched stunt in a movie. And yet...he's able to fly through actual glass from a car or bus and do dangerous "stunt-like" manuevors like a car jump or falling from a ledge onto the ground...and he's barely in pain? Hell, he doesn't show he's hurt unless the plot needs to show he is in pain which adds to the issues. If this is another meta commentary of something, the film doesn't do a great job making it interesting. As you can see, the film takes a lot of Tropic Thunder and morphs and twists it into something that, honestly, is nothing like it. The result is a film that has more in common with the film Ready To Rumble, a film that was about pro wrestling that had the same issues this film has both in its world building and humor. But the film isn't a total disaster: the romance is okay. Honestly, this is because both Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling is charming of themselves, because the actual romance in the film is pretty standard and pedestrian. Coming out of The Fall Guy, it was easy to see what it was going for. Which is puzzling why it didn't work at all by the end. It's a satire that honestly has nothing to say that hasn't already been said. And even if the satire isn't particularly clever, the film also isn't funny at all. Save for a lukewarm romance plot, The Fall Guy is a complete crash.
John Wick: Golpe a golpe, verso a verso. Director David Leitch discusses his new film, The Fall Guy, with fellow Director Jerry Zucker in a Q&A at the DGA theater in Los Angeles. In the conversation, he discusses striking a balance with the tension between jokes and action sequences, working with his actors to allow space for improvisation, and filming a meta-narrative feature that reveals how the magic tricks of movie stunts are accomplished. The film tells the story of Colt, a stuntman trying to win back his ex-girlfriend while recovering from a nearly career-ending accident. But after the star of her movie disappears, he'll have to search for the missing actor, solve a conspiracy and try to win back the love of his life, all while getting beat up at his day job. In this week's episode, Kat holds court on the movie that seemed uniquely designed just for her (which she ultimately found fairly disappointing): The Fall Guy. Directed by longtime stunt performer David Leitch and starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, A.C. and Kat predominantly found the movie… “cute.” Which is fine! But Kat was really hoping for a lot more about the love of stunts, all things considered. Then, A.C. debuts a new, extremely unhinged game entitled “Nightmare Blunt Rotation,” and Kat has a lot to answer for.Find Kat:twitter.com/kat_ex_machinaletterboxd.com/katexmachinaFind AC:instagram.com/aclambertyletterboxd.com/aclambertyFind Us:Join our PatreonOur WebsiteSubscribe to FFR on Apple PodcastsTwitterInstagramNEW: Letterboxd
Like the first film in this pairing, Richard Rush's 1980 oddity THE STUNT MAN, David Leitch's new THE FALL GUY utilizes the chaos of a film set as the cover for a crime, not to mention the inspiration for both romance and comedy. THE FALL GUY is a bit more straightforward in its crowd-pleasing intentions, though, to both its benefit and detriment, which we talk through in sharing our reactions to the new film. Then we bring THE STUNT MAN back in to compare its overlapping but distinct ideas about stunt performers who inspire their directors, get romantically involved with their co-workers, and confront their own deaths as a matter of course. And in Your Next Picture Show we offer another pairing of films that have nothing to do with this week's movies, but which we are nonetheless excited to recommend. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about THE STUNT MAN, THE FALL GUY, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. While there are countless movies featuring the work of stunt performers, movies that center the experiences of those performers are much more rare, which is part of what motivated former stunt performer David Leitch to make the new THE FALL GUY. One of the standouts on that short list is Richard Rush's 1980 genre oddity THE STUNT MAN, which uses the experience of its accidental-stuntie protagonist to blur the lines between post-Vietnam reality and moviemaking fantasy in fascinating, sometimes confounding ways. We talk through our interpretations of what it means and whether it works, and come to the conclusion that even when it doesn't, Peter O'Toole's performance as a diabolical director manages to hold it all together. Then in Feedback, our recent CHALLENGERS episode inspires a couple of listeners to share their alternate pairing ideas. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about THE STUNT MAN, THE FALL GUY, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. On this week's On-Screen Live, we're reviewing Jerry Seinfeld's Pop-Tart origin story/biopic disaster, Unfrosted, as well as David Leitch's messy action flick, The Fall Guy and the latest from A24 and Jane Schoenbrun, I Saw the TV Glow! This May we're doing two nights in the Lone Star state, starting in Houston on 5/14, talking Robocop 2 at the Houston Improv! Then on 5/15, night two is happening in Austin, where we'll be talking about one of our faves, From Dusk Till Dawn, at Cap City Comedy! Click through here for all ticketing information! And be sure to scope out our new NIGHT VISION and TOO OLD FOR THIS SHIT merch designs in our Tee Public shop! On-Screen Live airs Mondays @ noon/EST on our YouTube and Twitch channels, so subscribe to the show on both!
On this week's show, the hosts begin by diving head-first into The Fall Guy, director David Leitch's love letter to stunts and stunt people. It's a rom-com starring action set pieces, in which stuntman Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) falls for his director and ex-flame, Jody (Emily Blunt). The film is very telling about the work that goes into making an action flick… but does The Fall Guy ever achieve liftoff? Then, they debate I Saw the TV Glow, Jane Schoenbrun's impressive second feature that chronicles the friendship between Owen and Maddy, and their fascination with the fictional show The Pink Opaque. I Saw the TV Glow obsesses over what's real and not real–and is said to be an allegory for being trans–in a way that's brave and admirable, but often depressing to watch. Finally, the panel is joined by Lydia Polgreen, Opinion columnist for The New York Times and co-host of the Matter of Opinion podcast, to discuss her reporting on the student protests unfolding in New York City. A few of the media mentioned: “Columbia, Free Speech and the Coddling of the American Right” and “The Student-Led Protests Aren't Perfect. That Doesn't Mean They're Not Right.” by Polgreen; “The Takeover,” an on-the-ground report by the staff of the Columbia Daily Spectator for New York Magazine; the Columbia Revolt documentary. In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel discusses the question that's been roiling TikTok: For women, would you rather be alone in the woods with a man or a bear? In the entertaining new film The Fall Guy, Ryan Gosling plays a down-on-his-luck stunt performer who gets a big new opportunity to get his career on track. And maybe get back the woman (Emily Blunt) whose heart he broke. Directed by David Leitch, it's a knowing comedy about action movies, and a character study of a man who likes to think he's invincible. And the movie has amazing stunts.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
The Fall Guy show from the 80s gets a modern reincarnation in this David Leitch helmed project. As a man who comes from the stunt world, Leitch did an excellent job of portraying the stunt men and women with life and laughter. It has the action of John Wick and the heart of a romcom. Don't let “comedy torture” fool you, it's a good time! Stay tuned for the next Bald Move First Run Movie: Furiosa (2024)! Badass Fest VI Tickets HERE Why is Mr. Feeny a Car?!
