Rapidly attaining the status of podcasting legend, Dr Louise Allen-Walker returns to our studio for another fun-filled adventure in the world of neuroscience. Louise is the programme director for Cardiff Met's MSc Psychology in Education programme, and is therefore well-placed to give us some interesting psychological goodies to help us in our teaching practice, as well as to bust some more examples of neuroscience being used in ways that are confusing, inaccurate or just plain dodgy. Louise has brought along one of her favourite books: The Science of Learning: 99 studies every teacher needs to know. The book presents 99 two-page summaries of seminal studies and unpacks the implications for the classroom teacher in a highly accessible format - no psychology expertise required! In this episode, we discuss four studies which cover cognitive load, resilience, interaction with nature and the ominously-named 'seduction of neuroscience'. Louise also brings us something interesting and something to try, because you don't get to be a programme director without a serious commitment to doing your homework. Louise's first episode recorded down-the-line during Covid was memorable for an appearance by the infamous 'neuromyth van' outside her house (you'll have to listen to find out what we're on about). In her second she was challenged to bust as many neuromyths as she could against the clock. Will we come up with something else bizarre for Louise this time around? Listen in and find out!-----------------------------Recorded in studio B2.16 at Cardiff Metropolitan University's Cyncoed Campus on 15th May 2023

We welcome back Dr. Louise Allen-Walker, Programme Director for the MSc Psychology in Education here at Cardiff Met, to discuss what research (and particularly quantitative research) looks like in psychology, and how we can be sure we approach it critically. Louise has some clear explanations of how quantitative researchers set about their work, as well as some cautionary points about the oddities and pitfalls of working with numbers and reading psychology journals. Cognitive Neuroscience in the Classroom with Dr Louise Allen Walker

We're starting to hear more and more about cognitive science when discussing research-informed approaches to teaching. It can seem an intimidating field, and can also come across as quite 'black and white' - especially when co-opted as an argument-winner in some of the less friendly contributions to edu-Twitter! So we thought it was high time to sit down for a discussion with someone who can throw some light on cognitive neuroscience - and just a few doors down the corridor we have Dr Louise Allen-Walker, Programme Director for the MSc Psychology in Education programme! Of course, we haven't seen Louise in person for quite some time, so we posted her some kit to allow us to hook up remotely, and got down to a deep discussion. Along the way, we define cognitive neuroscience, get some honest answers about what it can and can't tell us, as well as showing which of the current big themes of teaching and learning have their roots in Louise's field of specialism. There are plenty of useful, practical strategies for us to follow as teachers based around growth mindset and how and what to praise. Of course, we couldn't talk about cognitive neuroscience without inviting Louise to bust a few persistent neuromyths, and hopefully we can play a small part in putting some of these highly resilient, and occasionally quite damaging, tall tales to bed once and for all. And towards the end we even get a cameo appearance from Lousie's local Neuromyth Van, which apparently drives the streets around her house inviting residents to dispose of any old neuromyths so they can be crushed into cubes and buried deep below ground. If you're interested in studying on any of the programmes Louise runs, do drop her an email: LAllen-Walker@cardiffmet.ac.uk   --------------- Recorded remotely on 27th January 2021

The Harvard Macy Institute Podcast aims to connect our Harvard Macy Institute community and to develop our interest in health professions education topics and literature. Our podcast is hosted by our Program for Educators in the Health Professions course faculty Victoria Brazil, and will feature interviews with health professions education authors and their research papers.Podcast #5 explores a recent paper on Social Learning Theory and Continuing Professional Development, with Louise Allen (first author) and Graham McMahon Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) in the United States. In this episode Victoria Brazil speaks with Louise Allen about her recent Medical Teacher publication on Applying Social Learning Theory to explain the impacts of Continuing Professional Development. Her paper, with co-authors Marg Hay, Elizabeth Armstrong and Claire Palermo is an exemplar of qualitative research, and involved semi-structured interviews with previous Harvard Macy and Monash Institute for Health and Clinical Education program participants. The team found that scholars broadened their networks, affirmed themselves, applied learning in practice and enjoyed career progression. The impacts of these courses reached beyond themselves to both the people and organizations with which  they are involved.Victoria and Louise were also joined by Graham McMahon from ACCME (see his succinct Stanford X talk on CME or listen to his new Coffee with Graham podcast) to consider what this means for the planning, delivery and regulation of continuing professional development. In a broad ranging discussion we draw on the prior Harvard Macy Institute podcast on virtual communities of practice, Dan Pratt’s 5 perspectives on teaching , and the translational of these principles in a COVID imposed ‘virtual CME’ era.

The Pet Shop Boys talk about their highly anticipated new studio album Hotspot, which is released today. Hotspot is the duo’s final release with producer Stuart Price who ushered in a period of ‘electronic purism’ in their work. Recorded using a large amount of analogue equipment, Hotspot is a departure from the Pet Shop Boy’s recent hyper dance pop sound. Front Row's series examining risk in the arts focuses today on emotional risk. What is it like for writers and performers to explore their own personal backgrounds and issues and then to go public with their revelations and confessions, and how much has that changed in recent years? Louise Allen addresses the challenge of putting her experiences of an abusive childhood in foster care onto the page in her memoir Thrown Away Child, and stand-up Ahir Shah discusses drawing on his own personal mental health issues in his stage act. Next Monday is International Holocaust Remembrance Day, and the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp. We are all familiar with images of victims of the Holocaust. Most of these, though, were actually taken by the Nazis for propaganda purposes and to create a historical record. The Eye as Witness , a new touring exhibition organised by The National Holocaust Centre and Museum, challenges these views. Professor Maiken Umbach explains how, using virtual reality technology, viewers can enter into a photograph to experience how it was framed and, crucially, what is not shown, including the photographer taking the picture. The exhibition focuses, too, on photographs taken, at enormous risk, by the inmates of the ghettoes and camps. Some of these images were buried and retrieved once the war was over. They reveal, amidst degradation and evil, a zest for life, humanity and love. Presenter: Stig Abell Producer: Hilary Dunn
