Show Notes: Jessica Kerrigan (formerly Jessica McBee) shares that she applied for an internship with the American Symphony Orchestra League but didn't get it, leading her to work with the Greater Boston Youth Symphony. She moved to Iowa City to be with her boyfriend, Wade Kerrigan, who was in law school, and worked at American College Testing. Jessica got engaged, married, and moved to Kansas City, where she worked for Andrews McNeil Publishing as a contract administrator. From Publishing to Nonprofit Work Jessica describes her transition from publishing to nonprofit work. She took some time off to stay at home with her daughters when they were young. She started doing social media posts for her knitting club and a fellow knitter like her posts and asked her to do part-time social media marketing for Jackson County CASA. She now works in the fundraising department. Jessica explains the role of Court-Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) in representing children in foster care and advocating for their best interests. Jessica details the funding sources for CASA, including grant funding, state and county funding, and individual and corporate donations. The Role of CASA Volunteers Jessica elaborates on the role of CASA volunteers, who visit children in foster care regularly and report back to attorneys. She contrasts the resources of CASA with those of the state's children's divisions, highlighting the consistency and depth of CASA's advocacy. Jessica discusses the potential differences in recommendations between the state, the child's attorney, and the CASA advocate. She shares success stories of CASA's impact, including a young woman who graduated through an online program and a child who reunified with a parent and later got adopted by a grandmother. Recruiting Volunteers Jessica talks about the challenges of recruiting volunteers and the effectiveness of community outreach and storytelling in attracting them. She highlights the diverse profiles of CASA volunteers, including retirees, young people, active moms, former professionals, and attorneys. Jessica explains the support system for volunteers, including advocate supervisors who help with practical needs. She reflects on the increased need for volunteers as CASA takes on more cases and the importance of having volunteers to support the attorneys. At Home in Kansas Jessica shares how her understanding of the world has changed through her work with CASA, particularly in understanding the root causes of child abuse and neglect. She describes her experience as a stay-at-home mom and the various volunteer roles she took on, including teaching knitting classes. Jessica recounts a story from her time at a knitting store, emphasizing the joy of teaching and problem-solving for customers. She discusses her love for Kansas City, including its central location, sports teams, and local barbecue spots. Personal Development and Family Responsibilities Jessica talks about her commitment to exercising through the Bar Method, which has improved her strength, back pain, and mobility. She shares her hiking trips with college roommates and how they inspired her to get in better shape for future adventures. Jessica reflects on the importance of staying active and healthy, especially as her children have grown older. She mentions the challenges and joys of balancing personal development with family responsibilities. Harvard Reflections Jessica recalls her time at Harvard, including the Introduction to Russian Civilization class where she met her husband. She highlights a sophomore tutorial in history and literature with Bob Lamb and Mark Dolan, which taught her the value of a deep dive into complex texts. Jessica admits that her interest in history and literature has waned since graduation, but she still tries to keep up with some classmates' writing. She shares her current reading habits, focusing on shorter pieces in The New Yorker and other publications. Final Thoughts Jessica encourages listeners to connect with her on LinkedIn and to consider volunteering as a CASA advocate. She emphasizes the importance of meaningful volunteer opportunities and the support provided by CASA programs for volunteers. Jessica reflects on the lasting impact of her Harvard education and the value of deep engagement with challenging subjects. A small Ohio city was stunned after a teen crashed her car into the side of a building, killing her boyfriend and a back seat passenger. Mackenzie Shirilla said she couldn't remember what happened before she slammed head-on into a brick wall at 100 MPH, but said the fatal collision was an accident. Classmates described Shirilla as a spoiled mean girl whose socials were filled with videos of her expensive taste in clothes, the latest TikTok trends, and clip after clip of her smoking marijuana. Investigators learned her relationship with Dominic Russo was volatile, and details of the crash weren't adding up. They believed the image-obsessed teen didn't black out behind the wheel…they thought she drove into the brick wall on purpose. The Netflix documentary “The Crash” recounts the 2022 case, examining evidence which suggests the high-speed collision was a purposeful act. Featuring interviews with the parents of all three occupants and with Shirilla herself, the film invites the audience to draw their own conclusions on whether the crash was intentional and why. The film looks at how Shirilla's online persona influenced the narrative around her, raising the question of whether investigators misinterpreted Gen Z culture with motivation for murder. OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "THE CRASH" BEGIN IN THE FINAL 13 MINUTES OF THE EPISODE. In Crime of the Week: shave off the hair of...two bits! After being yanked out of class and arrested on their high school campus, 15 year old Isabelle Valdez and 14 year old Lois Lippert are thrown into the back of a cop car. For 30 minutes the girls are caught on the car's dash cam giggling and completely unbothered. At one point, Isabelle looks at her best friend, “Oh you trying to look good for your mugshot?” Lois excitedly responds, “Oh shit, am I going to get a mugshot?...This is such a bonding experience, I love it.” The girls are basically acting like they're going to be able to go home at the end of their “side quest.” After all, the police arrested them before they could even carry out their plan to murder a classmate, right? Isabelle even comments that their plan was, “not a school shooting at least.” Lois agrees saying, “we'd be in prison for life.” It's true, the girls weren't planning a school shooting. Instead, they were planning to stab and murder a classmate in a ritual they thought would resurrect an infamous elementary school mass killer back from the dead. I didn't hear the bell, or I would have left earlier.Text2M: Hello, my name is Jack. I need to get in shape. How do I register for the classes?M: We'll need you to join the gym, and then you could find out which classes fit your schedule the best.Text3W: I'll see you at the theater.M: Better still, let's meet in the Red Lion bar to have a nice little talk.W: Good idea. And I'd love to have a drink there.Text4M: Hello, my name is John Arbor. And I'm calling to ask about the position advertised in Friday's Daily Mail.M: Yes, the position is still open. You could come over and have a talk with us.Text5M: I have an extra ticket to the concert tonight. Would you like to join me?W: Thanks! But I already have one. You can ask Emily. She might be interested.Text6W: Did you know James went out of business?M: Really? When was that?W: Last month.M: That's too bad. He had owned that business for 15 years. What happened?W: I don't know. But life must be pretty tough for his family now. His sons are still so young; one is 13, and the other is ten.M: Well, maybe things are not as bad as they seem to be.W: I hope so.Text7W: Guess what? My mother's decided to go back to school!M: Why?W: Well, she always loved art, but learned business administration at college because her parents thought it was difficult for an artist to find a job.M: So, she wants to study art now?W: Yeah, oil painting. It's been her dream for a long time.M: It's nice to return to learn what she loves. But, Kate, I still think old age should be about peace and relaxation.Hurrying to school every day and having to pass exams sounds a bit too much for her.W: You know, she retired last year and I'm leaving for the university soon. She needs to find something interesting to do.M: Well, maybe, if it's what she wants.Text8M: Dear listeners, for today's show, I have with my colleague, Mary Laney. She has been a radio TV reporter for many years.Mary, welcome to our show.W: It's a pleasure to be here.M: Would you please tell our listeners who most influenced your decision to become are porter?W: Both my parents had a great influence upon my choices of work. Instead of trying to pick out a job for me, they helped me learn those things that led me to it.M: How did they do that?W: My father always told me that an education was one of the greatest advantages I could have, one that would always stay with me. He used to tell me that readers were leaders, and encouraged me to read all I could. As a result, I've always kept up with the newspapers, faithfully read news magazines and learned to really enjoy books, all of which have been an invaluable help to me in radio and television reporting.M: What about your mother?W: Well, my mother helped me in a much different way.Text9M: We all know that exercise is good for us. But sometimes it seems too hard to leave the sofa.W: I can see that. You seldom do exercise.M: Plus, having the doctor tell us to get two and a half hours of exercise a week doesn't really help our motivation much.W: Don't be discouraged. Now, a new study suggests getting benefits from exercise doesn't have to be that demanding.Jacob Sattelmair, from Harvard University, has done a study into how much exercise is needed to lower the risk of heart attacks.M: Hmm...interesting.W: The study showed that people who put in 300 minutes a week of exercise had a 20%lower risk of death due to heart disease. Still, the people who exercise 150 minutes a week did pretty well, too, lowering their death risk by 14%.M: And what about the people who exercise half as much as that, like what I probably do? Does that help?W: Of course. Even 15 minutes would help.Text10W: Here is a piece of news for bird lovers.Scientists have painted a long road red, yellow, and white. They hope to discourage the seabirds from wandering onto the highway. "The area is home to large crowds of birds that come to stay for the season. Young birds are often attracted to the warm road surface and get killed by the traffic,"biology student Hannah tells the broadcaster. The youngsters' feathers are brown in color. The dark-colored road surface makes the youngsters hard to be noticed. As the number of tourists has grown, so has the amount of traffic on the roads. Biologist Kristin says the plan is to see how the birds respond to the multi-colored road this summer. And if it works, the idea could spread to other parts of the country.
In this episode, I sat down with Janae Young, founder and CEO of Young College Prep, who started her first business at just 15 years old, tutoring classmates out of her school library in Wilmington, North Carolina. By the time she graduated high school, she had a team of eight tutors. By the time she graduated from Stanford, she had hit $300K in annual revenue. And by 2025, she crossed her first million. But Janae's path was anything but linear. COVID wiped out the SAT/ACT prep market practically overnight, and her company went into negative profit. She was a freshman in college, going through a breakup, studying computer science remotely and somehow she held on. What she shares in this episode about staying stubborn in the quiet moments, investing $25K in herself as a 19-year-old college student, and pivoting her business model to serve parents instead of students is the kind of transparency you don't often hear.Janae also opens up about navigating the college admissions landscape in a post-affirmative action era, why she believes the college application process is a metaphor for life, and how she's helping students of color tell their stories powerfully. If you're an entrepreneur in a side hustle chapter or a parent thinking about your kid's future this one is for you.Main TakeawaysInvest in yourself before you feel ready: Janae wired $25K to a mastermind as a 19-year-old college student with almost nothing left in her account and that bet changed everything.Know who actually holds the decision and the wallet: When Janae shifted her focus from students to parents, her revenue took off.Real urgency comes from the problem, not just the deadline: Make your client deeply aware of what inaction is costing them for Janae's audience, that's potentially $100K+ in lost merit scholarships.Selling is just teaching: When you see yourself as an educator first, the "sleazy" feeling disappears and you become a genuine guide.Highlights Include(0:38) Janae started her tutoring business at 15 because she was too young to work at Chick-fil-A(3:26) Hiring and firing her first employee at 16 -- including a tutor who poached a client and cited contract law to get away with it(11:12) How COVID wiped out the SAT/ACT market overnight and sent her business into negative profit(22:43) Screen recording a webinar, then closing 4 out of 5 people at $500 the very next night(27:28) Wiring $25K to a mastermind at 19 -- and the phone call her mom got from the bank(31:21) Why shifting her target from students to parents changed her revenue trajectory(36:27) How she structured her Stanford schedule to be a student Mon-Wed and a CEO Thu-Fri(39:30) Breaking down her two offers: Ivy League Score ($2,500) and Ivy League Acceptance ($12K)(51:00) Her organic and paid marketing mix: podcast, ads, and live and evergreen webinar funnels(1:03:46) Her response to the affirmative action ruling and how she helps students of color own their storyLinks Mentioned in This EpisodeYoung College Prep website: janaetutoring.comStacey Boehman -- 2K for 2K program: staceyboehman.com/2kfor2kDielle Charon -- Six Figure Liberation mastermind (formerly called Sales Queen): diellecharon.comClaire Pelitro (Claire Pels) -- Get Paid Marketing: clairepells.comAmy Porterfield -- amyporterfield.comBrooke Castillo -- The Life Coach School: thelifecoachschool.comWatch & ListenListen to the Side Hustle Pro podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and wherever you stream podcasts. On today's episode, Andy Frisella & DJ discuss Spirit Airlines shutting down and what stranded passengers can do to get home, reports from the World Health Organization on suspected Hantavirus deaths aboard a cruise ship, and a high school student going viral after exposing classmates struggling with basic reading skills.
When multiple young women were found slain within days of each other in 1978, not much fuss was made as they were simply labeled as ‘prostitutes'. If these stories had made more than a blimp in local reporting, there might have been talks of a serial killer being on the loose, tormenting sex workers. But what's scarier? What's on?M: It's a science program on the origin of the universe. I'll give a presentation on it in my class tomorrow.(Text2)M: Hello, do you have The Best of Mozart?W: Um, sorry, we've just sold out. But we can order one for you. If you give us your number, we'll call you when the CD arrives.(Text3)W: We'd better be going now, or we'll be late for the train.M: No rush. It's 8:30 now. We still have two hours.(Text4)M: I am so tired of driving all those hours to work.W: Yeah, I know what you mean. I used to drive two hours to work each way. But now I live within walking distance of my office. I don't even need a bike.(Text5)W: Hi, Andy! I didn't see you in Prof. Smith's class yesterday. What happened?M: Well... I had a headache, so I called him and asked for sick leave.(Text6)W: The biggest mistake I made,uh, was leaving college in my last year and not completing my education. So I'm thinking of going back to school.M: School? To study what?W: Ecology. I'm interested in the relationship between humans and nature.M: Cool. Is it what you studied years ago?W: No, I majored in Chemistry then.(Text7)M: Good morning, madam. I am your guide for this trip.W: How lovely! Could you tell me about the hotel I'm going to stay at?M: Yes, of course! The Grand Hotel opened in 1990, and it sits on the seaside along the South Coast Highway. It is the most beautiful hotel here.W: That sounds great!M: And there are some restaurants outside, so at dinnertime, you'd have a lot of choices.W: That's really nice! I like to have some local foods while traveling. What about the scenery around it?M: The hotel has the best views of the Pacific Ocean.W: Oh, I think I will love this hotel.(Text8)W: Hi Mike!M: Hi Alice! Nice to see you. You don't often come here.W: I usually have fast food delivered to my office. Just came here for a change today.M: The environment here is good, clean and relatively quiet.W: Yeah, and I heard the food is tasty. By the way, are you going to the concert tomorrow evening?M: Yes. Are you?W: Yeah. Catherine was supposed to go with me but she may have to work extra hours tomorrow. Do you know anyone who might like to go?M: No... But if you like, I can ask around... Er... Joan might want to go.W: Oh, yes, she's a great fan of classical music. I'll give her a ring after lunch.(Text9)W: Hi, I've only just arrived!M: Oh, good. Now, here are the keys. Let's go in. There are two apartments. The one for rent is on the right.Do come in.W: Thank you. I like the carpet. The color is nice, isn't it?M: Yes, and this apartment is in good condition. Here is your lounge.W: Where would we eat?M: There is this corner here or you can use your kitchen. Come and see.W: The kitchen is quite small.M: Yes, but it has everything, cooker, fridge, even a dishwasher.W: And there are lots of cupboards.M: Let me show you the bedrooms. This is the smaller one.W: It's a good size though.M: Now come into the other bedroom. You can see the bathroom, too.W: Yes. It's very nice but I will have to ask my friend first and we will come together. I understand it is eight hundred dollars a month.M: Yes. But a few blocks downtown would be much more expensive.W: Well, thank you. I will be in touch.(Text10)M: Thank you very much. Thank you, Dr. Johnson. Well, it is really great to be back at university again. The thing that I wanted to tell you today is this: Education is important. When I came to the U.S., I was only thinking about being a carpenter. But I could not read the newspaper, and I could not understand the news on television or movies or anything like this. So I entered the City College to take English classes for foreign students. I was very proud that I was going to a college, because no one in my family ever went to any college or to any university. You know, when you're 15 years old in my country, you finish school and then learn a trade, and that's exactly what I did. When I was 15 years old, I learned how to be a carpenter. A year later I came to America. Luckily, I met a very good teacher who encouraged me to take some math classes, business classes, and history classes, and I became a full-time college student. And today, when I look back, I'm so happy because you never know where life will take you. All of a sudden I started making money because I was really good at math. You know, how to work out everything with math is so important. This is something that I learned when I started my own business, which is doing really well.
Professor William Thomas doesn't hold back as he lays out the stark choice facing Catholics: following a "diabolical" Synodal church that is built on the errors of Modernism, or staying faithful to the authentic Magisterium of the Catholic Church. A former classmate of Pope Leo XIV, Thomas brings a wealth of theological insights into the unfolding crisis that is causing doctrinal confusion across the world. The solution? Personal holiness and a return to orthodox Catholicism based on the Scriptures and Tradition.HELP SUPPORT WORK LIKE THIS: https://give.lifesitenews.com/?utm_source=SOCIAL U.S. residents! The opening of season 7 has a lot going on. First, a celebration for a 7th season and nearly 100 episodes. Then, each season opens with Dr. Hollie's annual personal episode, where he brings a guest who knows him personally. Perhaps this year's guest will give us something juicy. The special guest is Professor Marva Cappello, Dr. Hollie's classmate in doctoral studies at USC. Dr. Hollie and Marva have been connected as students, colleagues, and friends for almost 30 years. Marva is doing a double duty this episode. Not only is she representing as a friend and telling us her journey to responsiveness, but she is also providing her insight on identifying with Sicilian culture and not WASness. Sort of. New to this season is video. All episodes will be available via YouTube @validate_affirm. You can hear and NOW see Outrageous Love the Podcast. But after getting sober in California, everything began to shift.Rob opens up about the real work of rebuilding a life from the ground up, the mindset that carried him through early recovery, and how he went from having very little to building and selling multiple businesses. Along the way, he met his wife Amanda (yes, from the Sober Girl Group Chat

I'm going to do a one-month course at a language school and spend the rest of the time traveling.Text 3M: Let's see what drinks you've got for the party tonight.W: Everything! Beer, wine, soft drinks like Coke, 7-Up…you name it, I've got it! Have you ordered the cake?M: Of course.Text 4M: I don't have a library card. Do I need one?W: You have to have one only to take books out. You're okay if you just sit in one of the rooms reading.M: Well then, I'll just read here. Thank you.Text 5W : I wish I knew the times of the trains to London. But our phone's out of order.M: Don't worry, Grandma. I'll find out for you on the Internet.W: Thank you!Text 6W: Excuse me. I wonder if you could tell me how to find a place to have my shoes mended. I'm new in town.M: Ah, there is a good shop not far from here. Go straight ahead and walk about three blocks. I can't remember the name of the shop, but you'll find it. It's near the police station. By the way, you know about the town guide? It's a thin book and has all kinds of useful information. You'll find one in any bookstore.W: Thanks a lot! You've been so helpful. Let's see. W: That sounds like a good idea.Text 8W: Hello, Mr. White. Do you think it's possible for us to talk sometime today?M: I'd love to, Miss Wilson, but I've got a pretty tight schedule today. W: Can I see you after lunch?M: Well, let me see…after lunch, I have to attend a senior staff meeting, which may last about two hours. Can you come at 3? I'll have to wait until tonight now, I suppose. W: Well, I was posted there before, back in 2008. It's OK — a bit like England, really. At least the weather is similar, and the people aren't much different. The only thing I didn't like is the food, especially the sausages. What do you intend to do about the family? Are you going to take them with you?M: Well, I'd like to, but I don't know much about the situation at the moment…you know, about schools and all that. But I hope to move the family out there in a couple of months' time. I don't think I want to spend a year and a half out there on my own...I mean, without Rachel and the kids. I mean, I don't see that much of them now as it is. W: Yeah. Well, that's the way it is normally in our company, I suppose. M: Yeah. Well, we'll see. Let me pay for the coffee. W: No, no. I'll pay.Text 10W: Hello, everyone. Welcome to our program. I'm Jenny Jackson. The weather here in Juárez has become unbearable. With no rains for over a year, the city is suffering from unusually hot weather. Some light showers have been forecast since last month, but all of t hem have been effective in surrounding areas. Summer has not even started yet, but temperatures have reached 40 degrees centigrade in the past three days. And people have been warned not to go out of their homes — not if you walk on foot, at least — between 11 in the morning and 7 in the evening. Little kids and the elderly are the ones who have suffered the most from this extreme heat wave. They must drink water all the time. To help our audience have a better understanding of this extreme weather, we have invited Prof. Torres from University of Mexico to our studio this evening.

He had no idea Murray had spent weeks planning to kill someone - just to know what it felt like. Not rage. Not revenge. No reason at all. When it was over, Murray flagged down a police car, confessed everything, and told investigators the only thing he regretted was getting caught so quickly. This is the case of Jerrod Murray.

Multiple people across multiple years felt something wrong around Bryan Kohberger. A delivery driver. Classmates. Fellow graduate students at Washington State. People who created distance without being able to name what they were moving away from. People who mentioned their discomfort and watched the conversation end there — because a feeling has nowhere to go in a system built to require evidence.True Crime Today presents Part Three of The Shape of Him from Hidden Killers host Tony Brueski — a direct examination of the gap between social threat detection and institutional action, and what it costs the people caught in between. This episode explains the neuroscience behind that gut feeling: why it's real, why it fires around harmless people too, and why that imprecision is exactly why systems require something more. It walks through every threshold Kohberger fell below — mandatory reporting, threat assessment, HR, mental health intervention, law enforcement — and makes the honest case that the architecture that let him move freely is the same architecture that protects all of us.And then it speaks to the people carrying guilt about a feeling they had and nowhere to take it. And to the professionals who saw something and hit the wall of what the system allows. Both conversations are long overdue. Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
Hidden Killers presents Part Three of The Shape of Him — an examination of everyone who felt something wrong around Bryan Kohberger, had nowhere to take it, and is still carrying that experience. The accounts across his life share a quality: not specific incidents, but a persistent texture of wrongness. A delivery driver. Graduate students. Classmates. People who created distance without being able to say exactly why, who mentioned their discomfort to someone and watched the conversation end there, because the conversation had nowhere to go.Tony Brueski examines what that feeling actually is — the neuroscience behind social threat detection, why it's real, and why it's also imprecise enough that it cannot and should not function as evidence. Then he walks through what every system Kohberger moved through actually required before it could act — and why, at every level, a feeling without a documented incident wasn't enough to cross the threshold. The most honest part of this episode is the acknowledgment that the systems that didn't flag Kohberger are the same systems that protect everyone. That tension doesn't resolve cleanly. It isn't supposed to.For anyone carrying guilt about a feeling they had and couldn't act on. For anyone who works inside a system and has hit its wall. This is the episode that speaks to both. Just before midnight on December 6, 1991, an Austin, TX patrol officer called in a fire at a yogurt shop and requested firefighters and additional officers. Once they managed to get the fire under control, firefighters discovered the bodies of four teenage girls in the burned out remains of the building, all having been shot execution style and the building torched to cover up the crime.Almost immediately, investigators on the case ran into a dead end, as leads were scarce and the fire and efforts to extinguish it destroyed or compromised critical evidence. In short time, the case went cold and the residents of Austin moved on. To their surprise, nearly ten years later, Austin detectives announced they'd arrested for young men for the crime, two of whom confessed, and it seemed like, after a long delay, justice would finally be served; however, in this case, justice was still a long way off and when it finally arrived, it came tainted by police misconduct.ReferencesAssociated Press. 1992.
