Joe Rizzo & Jeff Healy dive head-on into the most controversial issue facing sports today: Black Coaches at the the top levels. Brian Flores filed a discrimination suit against the NFL for its handling of his situation not only regarding in his dismissal from the Miami Dolphins, but also his getting passed over for the head coaching jobs with the Denver Broncos in 2019 and the New York Giants in 2022, in favor of white men. While this is an issue that most shows would shy away from, Riz & Dawg went headlong into the fray, and even brought MLB managers into the mix. As this show was streamed live on Facebook, the commenters were an invaluable part of the show. They included Uncle Paul, Dwayne Morris, Quentin Ford and Lou Monaco. Host of "Mad Dog Unleashed" and "Mad Dog Sports Radio" heard on Sirius XM, Chris "Mad Dog" Russo, childhood friend and fellow sports talk show host, visits with Grant. Two guys with great careers share stories on teams, athletes, their beloved and hated New York Yankees and New York Giants and share a little about what it's like to be them. Fired up, calmed down and paired up for Grant's Rant, this is a glimpse into the world of sports talk radio and the men behind it.
Another mid week podcast means another special guest. Joining me on Episode 145 is an aspiring broadcaster who is already making his mark by being a contributor to one of the nations top sports talk shows. Jai Shields (a.k.a. Jai from Baltimore) is a frequent caller to Mad Dog Unleashed, hosted by legendary host Christopher ‘Mad Dog' Russo. Now, you'll get to hear what this young man is all about as he embarks on his quest to become a play-by-play announcer. Mind you, he just turned 18 years old. That's not a typo! Jai and I discuss his development as a sports fan, his passion for sports, his biggest influences, his ‘relationship' with Mad Dog Russo and we even tackle how he carries himself in light of racial unrest, police brutality and social injustices throughout our country. This was a great exchange with a bright young mind with lots of potential and a ‘sky's the limit' future. Fair warning: this may be my favorite episode yet. Award-winning sports talk personality Christopher “Mad Dog” Russo joins our podcast. “Science finds, industry applies, man conforms.” That was the subtitle to the guidebook for the 1933 Chicago World's Fair, and 85 years later it seems to hold up. It brings to mind change, my reflexive resistance to same, and a 2013 "Mad Dog Unleashed" column from Bicycle Retailer and Industry News. This episode was recorded with a Shure SM58 microphone, Rogue Amoeba's Audio Hijack, and the old 2009 iMac. Cap'n Whitebeard used an Audio-Technica ATR2100-USB mic. I edited the audio using Apple's GarageBand on a 2014 MacBook Pro. The background music is "Into the Sunset" from Audio Hero via ZapSplat.com, and the sounds of the sea come from Freesound.org.
