Many people will tell you not to visit Italy in August, we've been those people before (check out our previous episode if you're looking for reasons not to go to Italy in August). However, there are upsides to visiting in this dreaded travel period! In this episode we look on the positive side to tell you some of the bright spots about traveling to Italy in August. If you're craving a few nights on the water, and the few thousand euro price tag didn't make you gasp, you can see the hotel we're talking about* with a tennis court on the sea. In this episode we mention that smaller towns become more vibrant in August and could be just what you're looking for for your vacation. You can do this easily by booking a train or bus with Trenitalia. More off the beaten areas like southern Italy , where we live, may seem more difficult to get to. If you're looking to travel to south-eastern Italy, try Lamanna, Curcio, or Sita Sud. If you enjoyed this episode please leave a review and follow Only a Bag wherever you listen to podcasts! When farmers speak about diversity being one of the hallmarks of a resilient farming system, Stacey Curcio asks them to consider the diversity within their diets and the way they move to keep their body's cells and microbes thriving. Stacey is a Naturopath at Cultivating Wellness with a Masters of Human Nutrition and was guest speaker at VicNoTill's Food for Thought conference in 2024. She links human health and soil health, regenerative practices and systems thinking. In this Farmers Helping Farmers The Podcast episode with Michael Gooden, Stacey delves into more detail about the way people respond to the environment, the food they eat and the emotions they experience. Palates reflect the intricate relationship between the land, the plants, and the animals we consume. This connection reminds us that healthy, diverse ecosystems are essential not only for sustaining the Earth but for nurturing human health, as the foods we eat carry the imprint of the land and its vitality. Nutrition starts in the soil, not in the packet or on the plate. "We are what we eat eats."

Nicole Curcio is a ceramic artist living in Portland, Oregon but moving to Portugal this year. She discovered ceramics in 1994, in a high school class, and it was love at first clay. Over the years her work has shifted from painted, abstract cityscapes, to a more sculptural and botanical style. She enjoys combining functional wheel thrown wares, with ornate sculptural adornments. Her love of plants and growing things has inspired her current body of work, although her obsession with plants and planters can be traced back to her college sketchbooks. The work is always evolving but the pots she makes are decorative and very, very functional. http://ThePottersCast.com/1002
AABP Executive Director Dr. Fred Gingrich is joined by Dr. Reinaldo Cooke, a professor at Texas A&M Animal Sciences Department. Cooke was one of the investigators on a paper published in the AABP Bovine Practitioner Volume 57 Number 2, “Effect of maternal bovine appeasing substance on health and performance of preweaned dairy calves”. Maternal appeasing pheromone is secreted by the mammary gland of all lactating animals and the MBAS is an analog of that pheromone for use in cattle. The substance has an appeasing or calming effect on calves. This study was done on a commercial dairy in the northeast U.S. to evaluate health outcomes in treated vs. untreated calves. Application of MBAS decreased the incidence of diarrhea (71% in controls and 59% in treated calves) and decreased mortality (7.8% in controls and 2.4% in treated calves). Cooke describes other publications for use of MBAS in bovine practice including calves at placement to feedyards, finished cattle before shipping to a packing plant, at weaning in cow-calf herds, and preweaning in dairy calves. He also discussed opportunities for future research in use of the product in adult animals, such as decreasing stress in fresh dairy cows. Cooke also discusses some of the economic analysis for use of the product at various stages of production with a return on investment found in various studies of 20:1 To 30:1. On this episode of the California Now Podcast, host Soterios Johnson heads to San Luis Obispo County to secure top-tier suggestions from three in-the-know locals. First, Johnson chats with Jason Haas, partner and general manager of Tablas Creek Vineyard in Paso Robles. Haas describes how SLO's unique landscape makes it perfectly suited for producing an array of award-winning wines. “The conditions here are amazing and we have the chance to make something tremendous really every year,” Haas says. The second-generation vintner also gives Johnson a crash course on Tablas Creek's holistic winemaking philosophy before getting into personal recs around Paso Robles. Next up, Johnson is joined by Jim Allen, director of marketing and communications at Hearst Castle in San Simeon. Allen discusses how the lavish estate came to be, highlighting the fascinating characters behind its inception. “Julia Morgan was a California native, a Bay Area architect. Mr. Hearst was also born in San Francisco, so [Hearst Castle] is a very California-created entity,” Allen notes. He goes on to discuss the incredible attention to detail and artistry that went into building the castle. “The indoor pool has 2 million hand-cut glass tiles from Venice, Italy. It took five years just to do this one swimming pool.” Allen also covers the state park's most popular tours, its celebrity-studded past, and offers insider tips for visitors. Lastly, Johnson talks to multi-instrumentalist Dan Curcio of the San Luis Obispo-based band Moonshiner Collective. A longtime local, Curcio explains how the area's positive vibe continues to shape his sound. “I've been so inspired by the Central Coast, by California, just the lifestyle here and all the influences that we have around here, both musically and just in the natural surroundings,” he shares. Curcio also breaks out his guitar for a live performance of two originals, “Autumness” and “Good Company.” The local musician then shares some of his favorite stops in Cayucos, Avila Beach, Pismo Beach, and the city of San Luis Obispo

Danielle and Elizabeth started chatting about cats in the rain - do they love it or hate it? Danielle mentioned that she has a new outdoor cat, and they revisited the idea of letting their cats go outside. Then Sarah Curcio was introduced, and she started with how she loves to adopt black animals. It runs in her family! She's also a pet sitter. Her latest cat, Mitzi, came from a hoarding situation, but she's well adjusted and she doesn't even want to go outside. Sarah talked about treating a cat's skin rash by switching its food to gluten free, and how her cat now is sensitive to chicken. Elizabeth talked about Max, and how he didn't have a food allergy, now he's on Zyrtech, Cyclosporine and Dexamethasone for itching. Sarah talked about how her boyfriend trained her cat with cat cookies. Cat cookies? They talked about cats loving treats, then went into how social cats are. Danielle asked everyone to join the FaceBook Community, The Jersey PodCats Community. The conversation went on, if you ever have a question for Danielle or Elizabeth they'll be happy to answer it. Though the tide is slowly turning, not enough schools are offering financial literacy education to students, and I don't know of any states that require it for graduation. Some states may not feel like there's room or resources to teach this vital skill to students, but creative teachers and schools can find a way. This week on the podcast, I'm talking with Brian Curcio, co-founder of the financial literacy tool Rapunzl. It was founded to provide education about investing through fun and free investment competitions with scholarships and cash prizes. And because of the way it was built, students can learn about financial literacy both in and out of the classroom, opening up the possibilities and creating more accessibility. It's time for life skills to take priority in the classroom and this is just the beginning of what I hope will be a tidal wave of tools to do just that. About Brian Curcio: Brian fell in love with the world of investing in high school and quickly developed a passion for financial education after teaching his peers about the stock market. Over time, they realized that ordinary investors have paid a price to learn to invest; and that price typically was real money ending up in Wall Street's pocket. Rapunzl was founded to provide an unparalleled investing education through fun (and free) investment competitions with scholarship and cash prizes.
