Lacking no oomph, the mixes of Amsterdam's one and only Mary Lake tick all the boxes of a quality hi-NRG set. Boasting a definite knack for those volatile hotchpotches of big-room-ready jack and a surgical DJing skillset, Mary treats us to a frantic whirlwind of paced-up machine funk and absolutely imparable industrial-inflected maneuvers. Cranking the heat one notch up with every bar, the Dutch DJ certainly knows how to bring dance floors to a simmer and keep crowds under her spell through wave after wave of an uncompromising floor-destroying exposé. No-surrender, adrenaline-stacked ripper of a mix thru and thru, consider yourselves warned for the tumultuous ride ahead. Hectic.

Mary Lake is a sheep farmer and sheep shearer and itinerant slaughterer. She is a tall, muscular woman in bib overalls and a baseball hat and dangly earrings she carved out of a ram's horn. She wears a chain around her waist with a scabbard full of knives. And she loves sheep, which is one reason she participates in their slaughter. This is a story about where food comes from.** The first version of this story aired on Vermont Public. I am grateful to Vermont Public for allowing me to share this story with Rumble Strip Listeners!Mary Lake's business is Can-Do Shearing in Tunbridge, Vermont
A very intimate look at where food comes from
Editor's note: This piece contains some difficult and graphic scenes that may not be for everyone.A thoughtful and visceral introduction to where lamb chops come from, with sheep shearer and butcherer Mary Lake.

If you dare, dip your feet into the icy water of St. Mary Lake. The glacier-fed water adds a new twist to the term “refreshing.” It's one of many sensory experiences at a park that attracts more and more people who want to see the glaciers before they are gone. Glacier National Park, in northern Montana, is a crown jewel of the United States. Its pristine landscapes draw millions of visitors a year, to see its majestic mountains, jewel-colored waterfalls, carpets of wildflowers, and wildlife ranging from bald eagles to mountain goats and bighorn sheep to grizzly bears. But mostly people come to see the glaciers, these fields of ice that – by definition – move under their own weight, picking up rocks and debris that sometimes stain their brilliant blue hue with a hint of grey.
It's a little shorty episode this week - but that doesn't mean it isn't full to the brim with spooks! Sarah starts us off with a ghost story, except this ghost story is a little different: it's a friendly ghost! The Queen Ann Hotel in San Francisco was originally an elite girls boarding school, and it seems the old headmistress never left. Mary Lake had some drama in her lifetime, but she also had a passion for her school and her students and her ghost is said to be friendly and even helpful (like unpacking your bags for you). Book your night at the Queen Ann and see if Mary will sing you to sleep. ***CONTENT WARNING*** Stephanie turns this ship in a completely different direction and is bringing us some true crime. Specifically murder...specifically multiple murders. But what these murders have in common isn't a person, it's how they were solved. Genetic Genealogy: take a listen and let us know your thoughts on this new technique and testing. BONUS - Stephanie's stories are a 2-parter! So be sure to tune in next week to hear the rest!

Mary Lake has achieved what many aspiring young athletes dream of. Every volleyball record at BYU regarding her position requires you to take notice of her career. With opportunities to continue playing on a national level, Mary has decided to hang up her volleyball shoes (at least at that level, you can still find her tearing it up at the local rec center). Listen as Mary shares her growth as a person while being in the limelight, and how her parents played a critical role in helping her navigate through that. You'll notice her perspective is well beyond her years as she looks back at her sport with gratitude, and looks forward to the future with confidence.Lake has plans for her 2nd volleyball camp this year and is wrapping up her accounting degree at BYU. With big plans for the future we're eager to see what new records she'll be setting here shortly.Listen. Download. Subscribe.IG: valemedia.ut
Mary Lake Bennett is known as the former star libero of the BYU Volleyball team who went on to play for Team USA. But Mary is so much more than a volleyball pro — she's full of wisdom, mental toughness and a friend to all. In this episode, Mary gets personal with us and shares her challenges with injuries and disordered eating. No matter your circumstances, I know you'll learn from Mary as she choses to focus on progress, relationships, and growth in all areas of her life. Mary Lake grew up in France, Algeria and The Netherlands, so has also been exposed to a broad mix of music. In recent years she has distilled that into her own often frenetic rhythms, always with a perspective that is left of centre, but never too far out to lose the attention of her dance floors. It was on her NTS show Worshipping Discordia where she first showcased her distinctive collisions of electronica, folk and globally influenced sounds, but since then has become a firm favourite at clubs all over Europe, Australia and beyond. Lake's distinctive sense of rhythm is at the heart of this week's mix. The often stripped-back tracks she seamlessly stitches together have drum programming so compelling that little else is needed to keep you locked. Whether riding up and down on a rubbery loop, skating over busy poly rhythms or sinking deep into more linear and minimal cuts, this is pure, seductive body music from someone who exerts expert control at all times.

Crazed rhythms from a Red Light Radio favourite. Interview with @marylakeworld: melbournedeepcast.net/portfolio/mary-lake "I recorded this mix at home. Winter arrived and although I'm not a fan of this season, it does have a certain mystery, coldness and darkness to it which I can appreciate. I selected tracks that reflect this feeling. In my opinion, a genre of music that lends itself to this mood in particular is minimal techno, hence I used tracks such as “Hornitus” by Ø, “The Swamp” by Matthew Herbert and “Sea Club-Rush” by Grim Lusk."
