From Panic Attacks to Public Speaking Pro: Max Hopkinson's Journey and Framework

In our latest session, we welcomed the brilliant Max Hopkinson — co-founder of The Keynote Club and former Head of Marketing at Iceland Foods. Max shared his deeply personal and practical journey to becoming a confident public speaker, after once having a panic attack during a presentation on... breaded chicken. Here's what we covered:Max once believed public speaking “wasn't for him.” After a panic attack at work, he quit his job.But he knew becoming a better speaker would unlock career opportunities, so he committed to learning.Fast forward: he's now helping others do the same via The Keynote Club, aiming to support 1 million people.Max shared a framework to help anyone find their ideal speaking topic:Right to Speak: Do you have lived experience? Are you in the top 3-5 people in your network on the topic?Belly Energy: Do you have passion or fire in your belly for it?Audience Fit: Can you empathise with your audience? Are they genuinely interested?Attendees built a full draft of a talk using Max's 6-box framework:Start – Grab attention (no polite intros!)Intro – Set expectations and show relevanceThree Chapters – A clear structure based on story or chronologyFull Circle – Come back to your start for emotional payoffCall to Action – What should the audience do next?Timings – Allocate time to each section (and always finish early!)Everyone has a story — Max encouraged participants to uncover theirs, even if they think they're "boring."Speaking = Helping — Focus your talk on helping the audience first, not selling.Starts & Ends Matter Most — That's where attention is won (or lost).Max even drafted a template email for attendees to send, asking to speak to a real audience. Because, as he says:“The talk you'll regret most is the one you never give.”If you want to dive deeper, Max's “High Stakes Speaking” course with The Keynote Club kicks off soon – with sessions designed to help you build talks, master nerves, and grow in confidence.Huge thanks to Max, and if you found the session valuable, do drop him a follow on LinkedIn (he's just 70 shy of 10k... let's fix that).Stay tuned for our next webinar with Tracksuit's Matthew Herbert on how to measure brand marketing.

From his seminal work with Mark Pritchard as Global Communication and Jedi Knights, through multiple solo albums, and collaborations with luminaries such as Matthew Herbert, the man's record is unimpeachable.Perhaps just as interestingly though, is his second career as a sleep coach, sensory designer, and pioneer of audio therapeutics for sleep, relaxation, pain management, and cognitive performance. He's a co-founder of White Mirror, where he crafts health-driven sensory content and experiences, and a sleep science expert and neuroscience researcher. Bones.... Wind.... Caves.... A simpler time When we apes first tooted.. the fluuuute Yes it's wild how far we've come and Matthew Herbert and I go back a bit too .. I mean not to the flute tooting era but we go back. He speaks during this chat of his achievements as an evolved ape and many had me gasping !  He tells of multiple slippers that he can slide into to tap different sonic personas. The making of 1000 pieces of music a year! The upkeep of his musical organ filled with pigs blood. Yes The stories are wild in this one so Strap in! Did I mention we go way back? Yes ! I was lucky enough to collaborate with him on a few notable pieces of music. 1) He played on the second super_collider LP raw digits on a track called gravity rearranging  2) I was a singer on his album Goodbye Swingtime and joined him and the bigband at the Hollywood Bowl opening for Bjork in 2003 alongside Bonnie Prince Billy. Hollywood bowl bigband? I mean come on!! 3) He joined me alongside Arto Lindsay, performing the most monumental show of my career at Sonar 2003. That show was the real unveiling of all my efforts in the lab to make an impov looping performance with max/msp. Something I'd dreamt of for years and finally made real. It was so fitting to have him and Arto come on for the final number and make a total racket with me. We just all clattered it to the ground. A moment I'll never forget and it was all down to Matthew really as it was watching him show using multiple boss echos in short looping mode that got me started on that road. A brilliant and restless musical mind that has always moved in his own lane. It's a treat to welcome onto the show Matthew Herbert ____   It's been a while but I've some music to play from an artist and pod listener  This time it's from an LP called TRIPLE TRANSIT  The artist is Braile and he makes some really solid Modular YouTube pieces too  His new record is out August 8th on Hotflush recordings.  Link! https://braillesounds.bandcamp.com/album/triple-transit

Video version: https://youtu.be/5DIH0zdPnOk Working across UK funky, house and various, mutated strains of bass-heavy club music, Roska has earmarked himself as one of the UK's most accomplished underground exponents. Through a series of releases via influential dance labels like Numbers, Tectonic and Hotflush, as well as two albums for Rinse Recordings in 2012, he originally blazed a trail for funky to return to the clubs. He has continued to push the sound firmly into the future too, albeit now punctuated by his wider influences, via his own, genre-blurring Roska Kicks & Snares (RKS) imprint. Presiding over 50 releases, RKS has welcomed the likes of MA1, Champion, Gemmy and Doc Daneeka to the label since its inception in 2009 and now functions around a core base of new artists; Tony Tokyo, J Kenzo's Jodo Kast project, Majora, Transcode and Frederique. After spending the last four years releasing via different platforms A renowned DJ to boot, Roska's ‘Roska Presents' brand has seen him curate line-ups across the UK for the last five years and after recently returning from a tour of Asia – he took in dates in Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, Osaka and Seoul. Armed with a series of fresh remixes for artists including Matthew Herbert, grime-rap star CasIsDead, DJ Fresh and even Diplo, Roska is also prepping releases for Low Steppa's Simma Red, Form & Function and Pinch's crucial label hub, Tectonic. With a temporary move away from regular radio also in motion, a lot lies in store over the next few years – a defining period in Roska's impressively diverse and equally influential career so far. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/raveroompodcast/message

Editor's note: Beacon was created in 1913 from Matteawan and Fishkill Landing. 150 Years Ago (January 1874) According to the Fishkill Standard, burglars attempted to break into the Coldwell & Tompkins hardware store opposite the Howland library in Matteawan by using an iron bar to jimmy the front door. A window in the door was broken and the knob inside had blood in it, but the rather ordinary lock held. A piece of muslin soaked in oil and resin was found on the stoop, suggesting the burglars intended to carry away what they could and burn the building down to cover up their crime. The Fishkill Landing Machine Works was building two engines for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Co. and a 700-horsepower engine for a Chicago elevator. At the same time, its owners reduced wages by 10 percent. Two men attempting to break into the Matteawan home of James Richards fled after a 15-year-old boy inside shot at them with a revolver. The Wappingers Falls Chronicle called for the towns of Poughkeepsie and Fishkill to be divided, and a new town created, noting that Poughkeepsie had 20,000 people and six delegates on the county board, while Fishkill had 12,000 and one. A musician who came to Fishkill Landing from New York City for a performance in Newburgh lost his bank book and $30 [about $800 today] on the train. On his return trip the next morning, when the conductor came around for tickets and was told of the loss, he produced the bank book and cash, which had been found by the brakeman while sweeping the car. 125 Years Ago (January 1899) Samuel Stebbins, of the W.A. Jones fire insurance agency of Fishkill Landing, was distributing 1899 calendars to his customers. The ferryboat to Newburgh was operating 5 to 10 minutes behind schedule because of ice in the river. Grocers in Newburgh, Fishkill and Matteawan were victims of a scam by a man who claimed to provide Royal Silver soap at a discount. The product, which turned out to be washing soda and grease, crumbled when exposed to air. The fake soap was delivered by local truckers accompanied by men who collected the cash. W.G. Gomersall, superintendent of the Sargent estate at Fishkill Landing, was elected secretary of the Dutchess County Horticultural Society. William Pollock, who started the first steam laundry in Cold Spring, went out of business after moving his plant to Fishkill Landing. David McLaughlin died at age 65. He was a tobacco and cigar manufacturer, as well as the Fishkill Landing postmaster for 16 years. The Lewis Tompkins Hose Co. reported that it had cost more than $400 [$15,000] to bring home the body of Sidney Scofield, who had been killed in Cuba while fighting in the Spanish-American War. The federal government offered to contribute $35 [$1,300], according to the Fishkill Herald. The Rev. Edward McGlynn (at right) delivered a lecture at the Presbyterian Church in Matteawan titled "The Destiny of the English-Speaking Race." He said: "The ends of the world are coming together; even Japan is thinking of adopting English as a domestic language. Ours is destined to be the language of the world. It has strength, elasticity, [and] is sweet, admirable." John Howard, a gunner aboard the Princeton, had just left for Manila when his estranged wife showed up unannounced at the Matteawan school to inquire about the whereabouts of their 6-year-old daughter, who was living with her aunt and uncle. The woman had come to New York from Cincinnati, having walked part of the way. Alarmed, the aunt hid the girl with a neighbor - taking her out the front door as the mother came in the back - and said a judge should decide. The mother said her husband had kidnapped their daughter and that if she wasn't give custody she would kill herself. Matthew Herbert, 50, who drove the grocery wagon for Benjamin Deyo, was found lying on Rector Street at 7 a.m. on a Wednesday after suffering a fatal heart attack. The Lady Washington Hose Co. from Poughkeepsie visited Matteawan to take on the D.C.W. in ...

We've new music coming from rising producer Yak 40 as he releases his latest single ‘Swirls'. His new release comes in the form of a euphoric house groove that is bursting with resonant arpeggios, ethereal pads and crisp drums. We present new music from Yak 40, a.k.a. Egor Antoshchenko. The fresh name within the electronic music scene has been turning heads with releases like “Made In Nepal” and “Clapping,” which have ranged beyond ambient, techno, and house. The producer crafts a singular trip through sound waves using organic and ethereal soundscapes and sound design. The producer developed a love for electronic music early on, listening to artists like Matthew Herbert, Four Tet, Aphex Twin, and The Orb. His love for dubby ambiences and organic sounds, his music has naturally become extremely varied and genre bending. What unites his divergent compositions is ability to create emotional depth through music. We premiere is latest recent release, Swirls, an high-octane house track that is oozing with delightful washy pads, thunderous basslines, and organic percussion. It is a curious fusion of the sounds of Underworld and Four Tet, two of Yak 40's longtime favourites, at times soft and other times deafening. "Just be obsessed with music. Love it." The beloved London artist gives a masterclass on how to make it as a DJ and build a sustainable career. Alice Moxom—better known by her stage name, Moxie—started out as a radio DJ on Kiss FM and NTS before playing parties and touring full-time. Now she has a label and party series that she curates called On Loop, which has invited artists like Matthew Herbert, Josey Rebelle, Leon Vynehall, K-Hand and Joy Orbison, in venues across Europe and the UK. The key to her success, she says, is that she hasn't rushed anything in her career. "Your sound can evolve and you can change," she says. "If you're thinking about this as a real career, the [opportunities] will always come around." In this episode of Resident Advisor's Exchange—the second in a three-part masterclass series called Future Proof, a collaboration with Rhythm Section—co-host Bradley Zero says that Moxie is "one of the most organized and graceful DJs on the circuit." She reveals how she has steadily built a career from the ground up, detailing how she's developed a synergistic relationship with her booking agent; selectively chosen gigs and mix opportunities; maneuvered stylistically without confusing promoters; and cultivated lasting relationships with a team of people she trusts. Was hat Matthew Herbert da geritten? Welche Qualen, welche Freuden?

Roughly ten years ago—if we pretend the peak pandemic year-and-a-half doesn't count—Lars Dales and Maarten Smeets first came together as Detroit Swindle, before changing their name to Dam Swindle towards the end of 2020. The original name was meant as a tribute to one of their favorite musical legacies, but recognizing that it didn't come across how they meant it, the duo changed their name to pay homage to their other favourite place: Amsterdam. Dales and Smeets have become core parts of the Amsterdam house scene in their time, especially with their excellent Heist Recordings label, which they started back in 2013 (hey, now *that's* literally ten years ago). It's easy to understand why the duo have become so popular. In person and onstage, they're goofy, funny guys, the kind of people you might describe as the life of the party. And musically, they're massively appealing, marrying a European tech house strut to deeper and more soulful inspirations, a preoccupation reflected in Heist's impressive artist roster: Ge-Ology, Demuir, Byron The Aquarius, Matthew Herbert and more. Their RA Podcast comes at a time of reflection and change, looking back on the decade-plus history of both act and label and plotting their new album, which they say will expand their horizons even more. The mix is eclectic but smooth, pulling together tracks from the likes of Omar-S, Lil Silva, Ruf Dug and Genius Of Time (with one of last year's most underrated tracks). It's always a treat to hear consummate club DJs in a more relaxed mode, and this one's no exception. @damswindle Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/866

In a recent interview with Mixmag Asia about her debut EP 'Young Hate' and its just-released lead single 'Stonefruit', Sijya laid down the following as her artistic agenda: "It's a bit rebellious I'd say. I think it fights the notion that there are certain ‘correct' paths to reaching a certain level of knowledge or making." Carrying out that rebellion against the run-of-the-mill on the back of an intuition-led meticulousness, the New Delhi composer, producer and visual artist has begun to unveil her abstract take on art-pop and downtempo with the single release, which she marks for us with her Wild City mix.  The penchant for doing things differently pervades the curation and mixing as she uses the selections to celebrate Accidental Records, the home of her debut EP. Forgoing the commonplace approach of building things up gradually, the mix kicks off with a near-abrupt heavy rhythmic onslaught to firmly demand attention before finally clearing into captivating simplicity to provide a moment of sublime rhythmic relief with Dominic Voz's 'Right To The City I'. Sampled components of different tracks on the mix are re-arranged like a musical collage to manoeuvre through drastic dips and climbs of energy levels, as Sijya ventures into heavily distorted grounds and back while showcasing the uniqueness of her labelmates with works from the likes of Micachu, Crewdson, Mica Levi and ultimately, label-boss and British musical royalty, Matthew Herbert.  For more information and tracklist: https://www.thewildcity.com/mixes/19961-wild-city-217-sijya

Politics and Big Band music :British musician Matthew Herbert has created The State Between Us, a new album made in reaction to the progress of Brexit. It's a work which includes original composition, choral elements and recorded sounds which reflect the triggering of Article 50; there's someone walking the Irish border, someone eating fish and chips and even someone flying a WWII bomber. Matthew Herbert discusses his intentions for the work, recording in Europe, and why he changed the name from The Brexit Big Band to The Great Britain and Gibraltar European Union Membership Referendum Big Band. The album is released on Friday 29th March – Brexit Day - and there are two performances that same day at London's Royal Court Theatre.A new exhibition at Tate Britain brings together the largest group of Van Gogh paintings shown in the UK for nearly a decade. Crazed rhythms from a Red Light Radio favourite. Interview with @marylakeworld: melbournedeepcast.net/portfolio/mary-lake "I recorded this mix at home. Winter arrived and although I'm not a fan of this season, it does have a certain mystery, coldness and darkness to it which I can appreciate. I selected tracks that reflect this feeling. In my opinion, a genre of music that lends itself to this mood in particular is minimal techno, hence I used tracks such as “Hornitus” by Ø, “The Swamp” by Matthew Herbert and “Sea Club-Rush” by Grim Lusk."
