South Royalton has something that no other Vermont town does: a law school. But for a long time, there's been one rumor the town and the school can't seem to shake — that Vermont Law & Graduate School is on the verge of upping sticks for Burlington. Question-asker Tess Mix, of neighboring Tunbridge, has been hearing this rumor her whole life. She wants to know, is it true? And how reliant is the community on the law school, anyway? For more photos and an episode transcript, head to our website.***Get our brand new, limited-edition BLS beanie! The town of Tunbridge has been battling a landowner for almost five years over who has the right to maintain former public roads, which are now used for recreation.
This week we are joined by Cambridge United CEO Alex Tunbridge. Last week, Cambridge was in the news for activities off the pitch, as they unveiled a full rebrand of the club, most notably revealing a new crest to create a more modern and digital feel to the branding of Cambridge, while importantly maintaining the heritage and culture so valuable to its historic identity. Some of you may start to think we've got a bit of thing for League One clubs, and you may not be wrong. But when it comes to the business of football, they are some of the most intriguing organisations in the game. You face the constant challenge of chasing the gold in the Championship and Premier League, but also trying not to overstretch yourself financially and drop out of the league. How do you justify a pound spent away from the pitch? It's our new favourite theme. Alex and Cambridge have been one of the most ambitious when it comes to value creation away from the pitch. New training facilities, club rebrands, stadium developments, matchday experience; all of these indirectly create a value in the club to position it for long-term success. But can success off the pitch be replicated on it? This is a conflict in ideology we love to talk about, and we love what Cambridge are doing. In today's show we discuss: Spending away from the pitch: How a full rebrand of Cambridge United came about, and why it is so important to make sure your visual identity is fit for the modern age. Why did the club build a new £3.5m training complex and how do you justify significant spend on infrastructure when the money could be spent on improving the team? Spending on non-performance shows long term strategy; how do you get fans onside and bring the fans on the journey with you? How difficult is it to build value into a club while operating on budgets of less than £10m? The role of a CEO: How did Alex become CEO of Newport County at the age of 29? What are the hardest jobs you have to take on when leading a football club? ‘Working in football is not a job. It's a way of life'; the need for a top executive to be all in and commit fully to the development of the club. Does the CEO get involved with the football side of the business? The story of bringing the iconic Burger King deal to Stevenage and the value of new age digitalised commercial inventory. The business of the football league: ‘The Premier League is the best league in the world, but our football pyramid is the best pyramid in the world'. How do we protect the pyramid? How much do Championship, League One and League Two clubs get from the current media rights deal? Where do the biggest challenges lie from a business perspective when running a football club in 2024? How can we protect the competitive balance of the leagues but also encourage teams to continue development and push boundaries to improve the product? Word of Rufus' army, and the destruction of the rebel forces at Tunbridge, had no doubt reached Pevensey and its commander, Robert of Mortain… and I think it's highly likely that the messengers also reported that the King's army had turned north, towards Rochester. Bishop Odo's stronghold. The post 455: Odo's Rebellion: Lord of the Flies first appeared on The British History Podcast.

Recently, there have been a fair few people who have gotten in touch to let us know that they've enjoyed an episode from the past. So, we thought it would be a good idea to round the year out by re-running three of our most popular episodes. We've all seen some great examples of sponsorships adjusting, doing something different, and really creative activations this year because of COVID-19. A lot of those have been driven by necessity. Probably the most talked about activation of 2020, however, has been Burger King's sponsorship of Stevenage FC, who, at the time of the sponsorship, in 2019, were last in the fourth division of English football. It left many people scratching their heads. It is, of course, the sponsorship that ultimately gave us the hugely successful Stevenage Challenge. This amazing partnerhsip wasn't driven by COVID-19 or necessity. It was driven through vision and creativity, and, as our guest phrases it later on in the show, “a leap of faith”, to pull off a truly brilliant activation. One of the reasons it was so brilliant was because the opportunity was right under so many people's noses, yet so many didn't see it. The activation is both amazing in its boldness yet so jarringly simple. Tap into the already huge, but growing, eSports market, specifically FIFA. Tap into the underdog status and fairytale storyline of them winning. Tap into the desire for people to share their gaming highlights online. Tap into the fact that everyone loves an easily accessible giveaway, especially fast food. The results have been absolutely amazing and driven directly from the 1.2 billion impressions that Burger King's shirt sponsorship, of Stevenage FC, has produced through the Stevenage Challenge on FIFA. Furthermore, those commercial outcomes and further opportunities are both online and offline. Alex Tunbridge is the Chief Executive at Stevenage FC and he joins us in this episode to take us inside Burger King's sponsorship of his club. We also hear from Daniel Collier-Hill, KORE's Commercial Director – APAC, who joins us to discuss the blog which outlines 3 Things That Will Provide Both Short and Long-term Benefits to Sponsorship Managers. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Bipolar Disorder has been listed as one of the leading disorders of the Global Burden of Diseases... Yet the amount of research and funding put towards it is abysmal. Laine and I share that during our clinical education, we were taught almost nothing about the experience of mania, diagnosing, or treating the disorders like Bipolar. This episode share's what we know so far (from the MANY articles Laine went through to try to make sense of it) and what's happening in the brain -- referencing studies from Harrison, Gettes, Tunbridge, Clark, Sahakian, and more. It also touches on what needs to be done to not only better support those who have experienced manic episodes or have been diagnosed, but what is required for the field of mental health to improve. The takeaways of this episode are some of our favorites -- you can hear it in Laine's voice at the end. Enjoy -- and as always, if you have any questions feel free to email us at info@brainblownpodcast.com. Despite Vermont parents' overwhelming demand for spots in child care and preschools, the supply remains limited. Parents all over the state sit on waitlists for months or even years. If they do score a spot, tuition likely could cost them more than if they sent their toddler to an in-state college for the workday. And yet, despite the tight market for early childhood services, the educators still usually make less than $20 an hour, and often don't receive benefits such as health insurance. Something in this economic system isn't working for most Vermont families. Child care is also shaping up to be one of the most significant policy issues state lawmakers tackle this legislative session. Gov. Phil Scott already has released a $50 million proposal to increase to state subsidies. Legislators are expected to release a child care funding bill in the coming days. This episode, we go to the Orange County Parent Child Center in Tunbridge, where parents and educators discuss how they're making it work. VTDigger politics reporter Lola Duffort explains how state funding for child care could change this year.

Evangelical Steven Pynakker interviews Mark Staker co-author of "Joseph and Lucy Smith's Tunbridge Farm: An Archaeology and Landscape Study". In this episode we discuss Mark and co-author Donald Enders archaeological expedition of Tunbridge Farm. Joseph and Lucy Smith cleared and farmed the land from 1791-1805. This episode is a bit a of a prelude to an upcoming show in which Mark will reveal the results of a soil study that will indicated what type of pollen it contains. This will enable us to know what type of crops they planted when they farmed it. Mark expects to have the results next month. So he will come back on and my viewers will be among the first to know the results! Stay tuned. Special thanks to Rick Bennett of Gospel Tangents for doing a last minute edit for me on this video.Link to purchase book

Today I'm drinking a Winter Warmer from Harpoon Brewery https://www.harpoonbrewery.com/beer/winter-warmer/ And is it a bones day or no bones day, if you don't know what I'm talking about Noodle the Pug on TikTok (https://www.tiktok.com/@jongraz) is an internet sensation and, in an effort to recognize Mental Health Awareness and self care, Tall Tale Brewing in Parsonsburg, MD is releasing No Bones Day IPA. It appears to be available in the taproom now, but will be in distribution soon with a fresh look https://mybeerbuzz.blogspot.com/2021/11/tall-tales-brewing-working-on-no-bones.html In September, it wasn't just carrying the first ever all-civilian crew into space. Inspiration4 also carried 66 pounds of hops! The hops has touched down in “Space Craft” beer from Samuel Adams. The special release beer will be served at its Boston Brewery and Taproom and its Cincinnati Brewery starting today. But, with out of this world demand for the beer, it's sold out for online/home delivery orders. If you can get it in person, the beer that spend 2 days, 23 hours and 3 minutes circling earth is selling for $22.33. https://www.boston.com/food/beer/2021/11/04/space-craft-sam-adams-uses-hops-that-have-been-to-space/ In Microbrewery News, the Tunbridge, VT area will again have a general store, a world-famous fair and is also the home to its own brewery, Upper Pass Beer Co. Residents of this great community may never leave town again - especially since a planned two-story addition and facility space increase will allow brewing capacity to grow from 10-15 barrels a week to 40! Those mainly will be small batch releases and new recipes as Upper Pass currently produces 600 to 800 barrels per month at von Trapp Brewery in Stowe, Vermont (https://www.vontrappbrewing.com). Upper Pass Beer Co.'s beers are available in cans and on draft in eight states. https://www.vnews.com/Bottom-Line-for-Nov-14-2021-43455188 Find out more about your host The Real Voice - Mel Allen. With plenty of fresh powder on the ground, we look at how climate change is changing our region’s ski industry; and learn why the sport now comes with such a high price tag. We also hear about how Providence, Rhode Island is grappling with being a “sanctuary city.” And we get inside the unique, intensely democratic process that is a New England town meeting. A view from Bigrock Mountain Ski Area in Mars Hill, in northern Maine. Climate scientists say ski resorts in northern New England may benefit from an increase in visitors as climate change shortens the ski season to the south. Photo by Martin Cathrae via Flickr Upscale, Downhill The late-winter nor’easter that dumped snow across New England on Tuesday and Wednesday was a welcome sight to the region's ski areas, which have been seeing shortening ski seasons in the past decade, due to climate change. According to University of Waterloo climate scientist Daniel Scott, no ski area in southern New England will remain profitable after 2040. As Maine Public Radio’s Fred Bever reports, ski areas in northern New England could benefit. A hand-painted sign hangs on the wall at the Veterans Memorial Recreation Area in Franklin, New Hampshire. Photo courtesy of NHPR. Skiing is a pricey hobby. A lift ticket at Sugarloaf in Maine will run you $95. At Stowe in Vermont, it’s $124 for the day. Even at Ski Sundown, a small mountain in Connecticut, a ticket on a Saturday or Sunday costs $60. But at Veterans Memorial Ski Area in Franklin, New Hampshire, admission is just $20. Instead of a chair lift, there's a metal bar that goes behind the thighs, attached to a rope that pulls skiers up the 230-foot hill. Once upon a time, these no-frills ski areas were the rule in New England, rather than the exception. So what happened? The team at New Hampshire Public Radio’s podcast Outside/In went to Franklin to figure out how skiing “got fancy.” For more fun on the slopes, listen to the full Outside/In episode, “Gnar Pow.” Whose Sanctuary is it Anyway? Guests at Rhode Island Public Radio’s “Policy and Pinot” discussion on March 9. From left: Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza, immigration law professor Deborah Gonzalez, Providence Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare, RI Republican National Committeewoman Lee An Sennick, and NEXT host John Dankosky. Photo by Kristen Gourlay for RIPR President Donald Trump has pledged to crack down on so-called sanctuary cities — jurisdictions that shield undocumented residents from federal immigration officials, mainly by refusing to comply with requests for local law enforcement to help enforce immigration law. Under Trump's January 25 executive order, these cities could lose federal funding. The president and his supporters say the order is an attempt to improve public safety. But advocates claim that people living in the United States without documentation are more often victims of crime. They say that when police cooperate with federal immigration officials, community trust is eroded. Earlier this month, NEXT host John Dankosky moderated a forum about sanctuary cities in Providence, Rhode Island; where Mayor Jorge Elorza, like other urban mayors, has voiced open opposition to the order. Elorza and other panelists debated where local law enforcement ends and federal law enforcement begins. Listen to the full event audio from Rhode Island Public Radio. Explore stories about immigration in New England from the New England News Collaborative series Facing Change. “We are the Government” This past Tuesday was Town Meeting Day in New Hampshire. And while some towns rescheduled because of the big winter storm, New Hampshire’s Secretary of State there said the law requires towns to hold their local elections on the second Tuesday in March, regardless of the weather. In Newmarket, school board candidates and many voters toughed it out. New Hampshire Public Radio's Jason Moon reports. Candidates and survivors braved the elements Tuesday in New Market, NH. Photo by Jason Moon for NHPR. While residents of towns like Newmarket cast ballots, other New England towns hold traditional town meetings. That’s when citizens gather in a church or school gym to debate, deliberate and ultimately vote on a budget, and other municipal business. Town meeting is a tradition unique to New England in the United States, and goes back to colonial times. But an increasing number of towns are giving up the public debate in favor of a ballot-based system. So, is the tradition worth preserving? On Vermont’s Town Meeting Day, Vermont Public Radio's Howard Weiss-Tisman sat in on a town meeting where the future of town meeting was up for debate. Meeting-goers in Tunbridge, Vermont cast paper ballots in a non-binding vote over whether to oppose a new residential development. Depending on town rules, votes can also be cast verbally or by a show of hands. Photo by Rebecca Sananes for VPR. So what’s so special about town meeting, and just how much power do attendees hold? For answers, we’re joined by Susan Clark, author of All Those in Favor: Rediscovering the Secrets of Town Meeting and Community, and Slow Democracy. Clark serves as moderator at her town meeting in Middlesex, Vermont. In Woodstock, NH, chickens in the road are no laughing matter. Photo by Angela N. via Flickr. And in Woodstock, New Hampshire, population 1,400, the main issue of town meeting this year was trespassing… by chickens. There's no state law regarding the caging of fowl in New Hampshire, and some residents’ chickens have been roaming onto neighbors' property, and even blocking traffic. How was the chicken fight resolved? No spoilers: you’ll just have to listen. About NEXT NEXT is produced at WNPR.
