Lecture notes for Matthew 11:1-19.
Massive crowds praising Jesus and seeking health and prosperity seem to contradict "the way" taught by Jesus. Yet, people have different interpretations of scripture, and they will follow the vision of their leaders. Nevertheless, holiness is more important than doctrinal agreement. A man whose heart is right before God may be in better standing than one who ascribes to the letter of the law. Brother Singh's goal is to promote a gospel leading to life, not death.

As Oakridge prepares to move back into our Sunday study of Matthew's gospel, Josiah recruits some outside help to re-set the stage. John Oglesby is a student and faculty member at Calvary University and executive vice president of Vyrsity under Agathon Educational Group. He also serves as a guest lecturer at the Word of Life Bible Institute where he teaches a variety of biblical books, including the first gospel account. The conversation that follows will aid in reacquainting us with this particular and unique book of the Bible, warn us of some potential hazards to avoid in our exploration, and highlight some important and exciting themes we shouldn't miss.

The Gospels of Matthew and Luke both tell us the Christmas story, but from different perspectives. In this episode, Tommy and Trey focus on what's unique about Matthew's Christmas story.
A History of Matthew's Gospel by Emmaus Bible College
Why?: The Great Commission is recorded at the end of Matthew's Gospel, but what is the commission? What?: In Matthew's Gospel, chapter 28, verses 19 and 20, Matthew records Jesus' Great Commission for the church. Jesus said to His first disciples: "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you." There is only one main verb in the Commission and it is not "go." Instead, it is to make disciples, that is, make disciples of Jesus. So the Great Commission is disciples who make disciples who make disciples… So What?: Is your teaching ministry about making fact-filled fans of your teaching OR about making disciples of Jesus whose hearts desire to be obedient to Jesus by making even more disciples? So What Now?: Commit, today, to make every lesson you teach an exercise in obedience to the Great Commission to make multiplying disciples of our Lord.

Father encourages us to read the gospel of Matthew straight through. We will see things in context.
Marco Uliana continues our look at some parables of Jesus in Matthew's Gospel.
This is the sixth in a series of reflections on Matthew 28:16-20. This week, we're exploring what it means to live in relationship with God and one another. Consider the people around you. There are those you know well and those you pass in a grocery aisle or on the street. Some people you know their story, other people you may just be getting to know. The same is true in our relationship with God. How will your obedience be a part of a nurturing relationship with God and other people? Listen to this devotion and explore it for yourself. Let's turn to Matthew's Gospel using the pattern read, reflect, respond, and return to explore the scripture. Read: Matthew 28:16-20 Reflect on the phrase "teaching them to obey everything that I’ve commanded you.” Those early Christians were sent to teach others what they had been taught by Jesus. What had they been taught? How to be holy or righteous in their living. For Matthew, at the heart of holy or righteous living was a relationship. The words “teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” is what Matthew wants us to know about living in relationship with all the people around us. It is what we learn as Jesus' followers. Being in a relationship with God and with one another is what the movement of God is all about. Holy living is about right relationships with family, friends, strangers, and enemies. It includes being proactive in how you treat others. You act on behalf of others not because they have acted on your behalf but because loving others is who we are as a Jesus follower. Holy living is about having respect for yourself in such a way that you are a person of your word. It means that you are integrated in your living, that what you are living on the outside in your relationships grows from the convictions of your inner life. Holy living is about seeking first the kingdom of God. Being self-aware and keeping all aspects of life in a healthy perspective. Holy living is about caring for others in such a way that you are caring for Jesus himself. You are growing to the point that caring for others becomes so natural that you don’t even know that you are caring for Jesus. You care, not to become holy, but because you are holy. Holy living is about being proactive in forgiveness. Relationships are so important, holy living is about forgiving as many times as it takes to restore the relationships that are being broken. The words “to obey,” “observe,” or to “pay attention to” is about doing the things you have been taught to do. It is easy to talk about holy living, but it is not easy to be holy in your daily living. You might think of it this way, you live out your purpose as you practice who God created you to be. What would happen if you began to develop relationships through the practice of spiritual disciplines? What would happen if you began to live your life in such a way that people could see Jesus in you? Respond Today, how will you put your faith into practice? Consider making an intentional shift from trying to be a good Christian to living a life shaped by God’s love. What one action will you take that requires practicing your faith? Be intentional about putting your words into actions. Begin to relate to all people the way God in Jesus has related to you. What difference does your interaction make in your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors? Return Reflect upon the scripture and your interactions of the day. What one action do you take that required practicing your faith? Pray O God, thank you for all the people you put into my life today. And thank you for giving me opportunities to practice my faith by putting into action the things you have taught me. I am especially grateful that you are helping me become more who you created me to be in and through the people you are bringing into my life. Help me focus my eyes more upon Jesus, so I may recognize you more often in the people I meet along the way. Amen. “And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." Usually, when we hear these words in Matthew's Gospel, the focus is on the fact that our risen and Savior is with us. But back up a moment to those first words that we may easily speed past in our haste. He starts by saying, “Behold!” Before we quickly rush out the door to begin our day here's a word that's also important for you and me.

You can find show notes for this episode at https://transformingmission.org/122 Over the next 4-6 weeks, we're hitting the pause button and hope you will too. Instead of a full podcast episode about a leadership topic or challenge, we're offering you a series of brief devotions to nurture your soul as a leader so you can continue equipping people to follow Jesus. We recorded these devotions to help you breathe in the life-giving Spirit of God. As I (Sara) edited this devotion, ever aware of COVID-19 and overcome by the racism that continues to plague us, I was reminded again why following Jesus is transformational. The Gospel is a life-giving balm for the soul. Jesus reminds us how to live. May this episode empower you to pause, reflect on who Jesus is inviting you to be, and then go, in the power and presence of Christ, to experience transformation. With this in mind, let's turn to Matthew's Gospel using the pattern read, reflect, respond, and return. First, a bit of context. Matthew on Anxiety In every generation there are those who say, “We have never been this way before.” But at no time in recent history have we faced the enormity of change we are facing today. When the ground starts moving under your feet, and when you feel you do not have a firm foundation upon which to stand your anxiety level rises. Anxiety is contagious and when you are driven by anxiety, you see the world differently. You begin to make your decisions based upon the fear of scarcity and to focus on needs, problems, and shortages rather than the abundance of the goodness of God. It is in the midst of such anxiety you need the courage to stay focused upon God’s mission and to lead the people around you in to your community to love the people God has given to you to love. Matthew, the gospel writer, knew this anxiety firsthand. Bringing together the anxiety of the day with the experience of being a follower of Jesus, living into the teaching of Jesus, watching Jesus develop relationships, and experiencing the life of integrity of Jesus, Matthew presents the Good News as God sending Jesus to teach us how to live a holy and righteous life. One way to face your anxiety is to look to the scripture for guidance, inspiration, and hope. It is in the reflection of the scripture and responding to its leading that you learn to be who God created you to be. Read Matthew 28:16-20 Reflect Listen to the podcast Respond Today, how will you be courageous in expressing your faith? How will Jesus inform your thinking, your decisions, and your relationships? Consider the ways you pay attention to different people. Be vulnerable. Smile and speak to people today. What difference does your interaction make in your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors? Return Reflect upon the scripture and your interactions of the day. How were you courageous in paying attention to the people around you today? In whom did you meet Jesus today? For whom or what are you grateful? Do you think or feel that you missed some opportunities today? What might you do differently tomorrow? Pray: O God, thank you for the assurance that I am not alone in living the life you have given me to live. Thank you for giving me direction in living this life. I am especially grateful that you are helping me become more who you created me to be. Help me focus my eyes more upon Jesus, so I may recognize you more often in the people I meet along the way. Amen.

Jesus concluded His teaching in Matthew's Gospel with a portrayal of the final judgment scene. How you treat the least among you would tell if you truly embodied God's purposes in Jesus or if you went your own way to perdition. Judgment Before the Throne of Glory | Matthew 25:31-46 | Jesus' Parables | Sermon Outline | Video "But when the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the angels with him, then shall he sit on the throne of his glory: and before him shall be gathered all the nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as the shepherd separateth the sheep from the goats; and he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, 'Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was hungry, and ye gave me to eat; I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink; I was a stranger, and ye took me in; naked, and ye clothed me; I was sick, and ye visited me; I was in prison, and ye came unto me.' Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, 'Lord, when saw we thee hungry, and fed thee? or athirst, and gave thee drink? And when saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? And when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?' And the King shall answer and say unto them, 'Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it unto one of these my brethren, even these least, ye did it unto me.' Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, 'Depart from me, ye cursed, into the eternal fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels: for I was hungry, and ye did not give me to eat; I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink; I was a stranger, and ye took me not in; naked, and ye clothed me not; sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. ' Then shall they also answer, saying, 'Lord, when saw we thee hungry, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?' Then shall he answer them, saying, 'Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not unto one of these least, ye did it not unto me.' And these shall go away into eternal punishment: but the righteous into eternal life".

Once a prisoner is tried, convicted and executed, there's no re-trial... ...usually! The Lord's accusers wanted Him to confess! But He turned them all into witnesses against themselves. Their trials are still pending, but the outcome doesn't look promising. In today's magnificent Gospel of the Passion of Jesus from Matthew's Gospel, there's an emphasis on the human suffering of Jesus. He is presented to us as the Suffering Servant from Isaiah's Gospel (Isaiah 53) who atones for the sins of the world and redeems it through his suffering. One example of the human suffering of Jesus is the profound psychological suffering we see in the Agony of the Garden. Jesus is gripped by anxiety; yet, he is able to call upon his Abba ("Daddy"), and trustingly commit his life into his Father's hands. This image is a good one for us as this Lent draws to a close. We may not have had the Lent we wanted. But this Holy Week we have the opportunity to choose and live not the Lent we wanted but the Lent our Father, our "Daddy", has given us.

This podcast is about St. Matthew's Gospel and the Passion of the Lord. How does St. Matthew show Jesus as the New Moses, the New Joseph, and the Suffering Servant. How does Jesus fulfill ancient prophecy and why did the crown choose Barabbas or call for Jesus' blood to be "upon them and their children." This and more in this episode of Oro Valley Catholic. The Bible warns of future devastation, and most people don't take it all that seriously. But when science warns of coming catastrophe ... no, they don't pay much attention then, either. There were some people who did listen to insights about the end times: the Disciples. They wanted to know, "When will these things take place?" Pastor Jim will help us fit Jesus' answer into the prophetic timetable. We'll be in Matthew's Gospel, chapter 24.
