Radical Australia

Sue Bolton is almost peerless when it comes to having clear working memory and deep knowledge of Australian politics the last 40 years. She can tell you the details of so many leftist campaigns, what the issues were that were being caused by government and business, and key decisions that were made. Her knowledge is really quite astounding. We return to Sue this week for our second chat. We take up her story when she first came to Melbourne and was active with the Democratic Socialist Party and publication Green Left Weekly. This was in the early-90s during the school occupations to stop closures, nuclear testing in the Pacific, native forest logging, the election of the Howard government and the election of Pauline Hanson. This period began a certain era of refugee politics and policy in the country. Sue was a national trade union organiser for a few years beginning in 2003 and was the lead arrestee in the Max Brenner case. She was elected to Merri-Bek council in 2012 and bases all her work listening to her local community. Sue has been re-elected twice. Her current big campaign is getting accessible tram stops on Sydney Road. We love Sue and think she is a gem. She deserves an honour for all her efforts for working class communities over many, many years. Thank-you so much for joining us once again, Sue.https://www.greenleft.org.au/content/beat-facebook-ban-green-left

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: ACX Meetups Everywhere 2023: Times & Places, published by Scott Alexander on August 29, 2023 on LessWrong. Thanks to everyone who responded to my request for ACX meetup organizers. Volunteers have arranged meetups in 169 cities around the world, from Baghdad to Bangalore to Buenos Aires. You can find the list below, in the following order: Africa & Middle East Asia-Pacific Europe North America South America You can see a map of all the events on the LessWrong community page. You can also see a searchable sheet at this Airtable link. Within each region, it's alphabetized first by country, then by city. For instance, the first entry in Europe is Sofia, Bulgaria, and the first entry for Germany is Bremen. Each region and country has its own header. The USA is the exception where it is additionally sorted by state, with states having their own subheaders. Hopefully this is clear. You can also just have your web browser search for your city by pressing ctrl+f and typing it if you're on Windows, or command+f and typing if you're on Mac. If you're on Linux, I assume you can figure this out. Scott will provisionally be attending the meetup in Berkeley. ACX meetups coordinator Skyler will provisionally be attending Boston, Cavendish, Burlington, Berlin, Bremen, Amsterdam, Cardiff, London, and Berkeley. Some of the biggest ones might be announced on the blog, regardless of whether or not Scott or Skyler attends. Extra Info For Potential Attendees 1. If you're reading this, you're invited. Please don't feel like you "won't be welcome" just because you're new to the blog, demographically different from the average reader, don't want to buy anything at the cafe or restaurant where it's held, or hate ACX and everything it stands for. You'll be fine! 2. You don't have to RSVP or contact the organizer to be able to attend (unless the event description says otherwise); RSVPs are mostly to give organizers a better sense of how many people might show up, and let them tell you if there are last-second changes. I've also given email addresses for all organizers in case you have a question. Extra Info For Meetup Organizers:1. If you're the host, bring a sign that says "ACX MEETUP" and prop it up somewhere (or otherwise be identifiable).2. Bring blank labels and pens for nametags.3. Have people type their name and email address in a spreadsheet or in a Google Form (accessed via a bit.ly link or QR code), so you can start a mailing list to make organizing future meetups easier.4. If it's the first meetup, people are probably just going to want to talk, and if you try to organize some kind of "fun" "event" it'll probably just be annoying.5. It's easier to schedule a followup meetup while you're having the first, compared to trying to do it later on by email.6. In case people want to get to know each other better outside the meetup, you might want to mention reciprocity.io, the rationalist friend-finder/dating site.7. If you didn't make a LessWrong event for your meetup (or if you did but Skyler didn't know about it) the LessWrong team did it for you using the email address you gave here. To claim your event, log into LW (or create an account) using that email address, or message the LW team on Intercom (chat button in the bottom right corner of lesswrong.com). We begin with our home-base in Philadelphia, with a Philly favorite: Scoop DeVille. We spoke with Spencer Phillips, who is the current owner and operator behind the thirty year-old ice cream spot. Spencer discussed how he came to know Scoop DeVille, and years later became the owner 10 years ago. Initially Phillips stuck to all the original processes. However, Phillips now creates his own flavors, ice creams, and hot chocolate floats which are sought after treats all year long! Stay tuned for more about Scoop DeVille and all that you can look forward to for your next favorite frozen treat! Tasting fabulous foods and beverages is always on our radar, so we spoke with the Creative Director, Joe Calerone, of New York's famous Serendipity 3. You may recognize the name, as this is a sweet spot for many celebrities, notable foodies, and from their notoriety on the small and big screen. Fame is not the only reason this New York City-based spot gained attention, they're also recognized for holding 9 different Guinness Book of World Records under the "Most Expensive" categories. However what we, and several celebrities are after is their Frozen Hot Chocolate Ice Cream and actual hot chocolate options. Need to hear more? Keep your stereo on, earbuds in, or smart devices playing--there were a lot of opulent items to cover. Speaking of opulence, Max Brenner International's Director of Marketing, Yosi Coba, joined us all the way from Israel! Yosi began his career as a youth, working as a server in one of the first Max Brenner's Chocolate Bar locations in Israel. Coba later returned to the company after studying Marketing in school and now holds his current position--which we are emphatically jealous of! Chocolate is enjoyed by the masses, however the intricacy of creating chocolate confections that induce an emotional and tasting experience is on another level; that level is where Max Brenner's comes into play. The company is not just a chocolatier, it has become a full dining experience--incorporating palate pleasing culinary delights with everything they offer. Of course, this includes their signature foods, desserts, and beverages to enjoy no matter where you are in the world.

While both businesses are connected by a core ingredient, the cacao fruit, Blue Stripes is leaning into CPG and a mission rooted in sustainability. During this episode of Retail Remix, Oded shares his founder story and:   Why the cacao fruit presented opportunities for product innovation and ideation;   How he approaches brand development and storytelling for such a niche story and value proposition; and   Why he is prioritizing wholesale partnerships over direct-to-consumer (DTC) sales.   RELATED LINKS  Learn more about Blue Stripes  Shop Blue Stripes online   Find Blue Stripes products in a store

Oded Brenner often praises traditional business principles. His career, however, has been defined by resisting them. A self-described “businessman-artist,” Brenner cut his teeth as an entrepreneur in 1996 as the co-founder of Max Brenner, an international chain of upscale chocolate-centric cafes. Brenner points out that the genesis of Max Brenner, which operated nearly 40 locations globally at its peak, had little to do with business planning or market research and instead was born out of Brenner’s passion for indulgent and comforting desserts. The same is true for his latest venture, Blue Stripes Urban Cacao, which markets a range of wellness-focused consumer drinks and snacks made from upcycled cacao fruit, including the shell and beans. Brenner calls it a “pure passion” project, albeit one that is rapidly expanding its presence at natural channel retailers. In an interview included in this episode, Brenner spoke about his unconventional approach to entrepreneurship and why he believes that “there will always be a place for the niche.” He also discussed his breakup from Max Brenner and his belief that corporations and independent business owners can never work together, why he embraces ideas that would commonly be perceived as mistakes and his definition for the ultimate form of success.  Show notes:  0:42: Interview: Oded Brenner, Founder, Max Brenner & Blue Stripes Urban Cacao -- Taste Radio editor Ray Latif joined Brenner for a conversation that began with a brief introduction to cacao fruit and instructions on how to open one with your hands (as Latif did during the interview). Brenner also discussed how his original plan to become a writer morphed into a passion for pastries, the origins of Max Brenner, the chain’s expansion into international cities and how he created a menu and experience that resonated with customers from all walks of life. Later, he explained why the company’s partnership with holding company Strauss Group was a big mistake, how his love of cacao fruit inspired the launch of Blue Stripes, why customer experience should package design, why having a broad mix of products is not a wise idea and his motivation to continue building businesses. A deal to sell the assets of Max Brenner Australia was cancelled at the last minute. Max Brenner is an international chocolate company that was founded in Israel in 1996. Since then, it has opened numerous stores in other countries, including Japan, the Philippines, and Australia. Recently, however, Max Brenner Australia could no longer sustain its operations due to increasing costs and other challenges. As a result, half of its stores are bound to close. In an attempt to keep Max Brenner Australia running, the owners of the company worked out a deal to sell the Australian stores. An agreement was reached to sell the stores to Tozer and Co., which invests in struggling companies. Investment firm Binder Dijker Otte (BDO) was the facilitator of the sale. However, BDO suddenly announced that the sale was cancelled for reasons still unknown. A BDO representative said that it would continue to look for other buyers. Tozer and Co., however, was disappointed over the cancellation and considered taking legal action against BDO. Current staff members of Max Brenner Australia took their grievances to social media after finding out that they may not be paid anymore from October 17 onward. After the outrage from Max Brenner employees and Tozer & Co., BDO clarified what had happened. According to a representative, the only cancelled deal was the agreement for Tozer and Co. to purchase Max Brenner Australia's assets. These include the stores, stock, equipment, and staff. The deal to purchase the license to run Max Brenner Australia, however, was still effective. In other words, Tozer & Co. could already operate Max Brenner Australia, but with its own resources, employees, and stores.

Oded Brenner is a modern-day Willy Wonka. In 1996, he launched a small chocolate shop called Max Brenner in Israel. That one location was such a success, he eventually expanded the concept to dozens of chocolate restaurants all across the globe – including in Israel, Australia, Singapore, Japan, Russia and in the United States. Max Brenner shops are inspired by “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" – even down to the chocolate pipes circumnavigating their way through the restaurant. It takes a whimsical approach to food and everywhere you look is chocolate, chocolate, chocolate. There's even chocolate pizza. He sold a majority stake in his company to an Israeli confectionary company called the Strauss Group. But then something happened that would change the course of the chocolate shop's history. Oded tried opening a new chain of coffee shops on the side, and the food and beverage giant sued him. Oded lost his job and the company he founded, and as part of the settlement he was banished from the chocolate business for five years. He spent those years in exile planning his comeback. And now, he's finally returned. He recently opened a new chocolate shop in New York City called Blue Stripes. Throughout the space – on the walls and on the gift boxes – are short pieces of text that Oded has written to his daughter, to share his entrepreneurial journey with her. To explain to her how he went from worldwide chocolate icon to being in exile. The new eatery offers a more refined menu, featuring variations on the cacao fruit, although you'll still find hints of the decadent. Their signature drink is known as "The Cloud" and is basically drinkable chocolate mousse served from a tap. In this episode, we visit Oded's new restaurant to chat about Max Brenner, his years away from the chocolate business, and what he hopes to accomplish next.
