HAPPY PRIDE MONTH from all at the Distraction Pieces Podcast!Every Friday there will be a Rewind episode featuring one of our friends, in case you missed it or simply want to revisit some wonderful chats...Below is the original writeup from the episode, in this case from Wednesday, February 12, 2020.Welcome, welcome, welcome to EPISODE 311 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by activist, author and actor (all the A's), Michael Cashman! Sorry - let me correct that - Baron Cashman CBE!An amazing meeting this week with Pip and Michael, a man whose experience and knowledge will come shining through immediately upon listening. As a founder of Stonewall (with Ian McKellen), ex-member of European Parliament, activist and former actor (those of us who grew up on Eastenders will remember him as Colin), his life has been a genuine document of ups and downs, highs and lows, but all navigated with love, conviction and positivity. His story is moving, uplifting and at times incredibly unfair, but as you will hear - from all of this, pure goodness has been his reward. Over 30 years of his journey has been underpinned by long term partner Paul, who is unfortunately no longer with us but as you'll hear, is spoken of by Michael with such love and compassion and it's pretty much impossible to not be stirred by - well, the whole conversation, let's be frank. The rest is yours to discover - listen, learn, and become better acquainted with a strong force for good in the world. In episode seven of "Parachute Candidate," I speak with Lord Michael Cashman. Born in London, Michael has dedicated his life to improving the lived experience of the LGBTI+ community worldwide. Many will recognise Michael from his work on Albert Square as Colin Russell in "EastEnders." In 1989, his role featured the first same-sex kiss on a British soap! Activism is at the very core of his life, and this passion has led him to serve in the European Parliament for 15 years and in the House of Lords since 2014. Michael has positively shaped democracy, and his continued hope for positive change for all, not just some, is remarkable. We discuss his journey as a member of the Rainbow community, co-founding Stonewall, his work in politics, and the rollback in protecting minority people. We conclude by speaking of his beloved Paul Cottingham, with whom he spent over thirty years and who sadly passed away in 2014.Some films I suggest to watch; "The Normal Heart", "Love, Simon", “A Secret Love", "Pray Away" and "The Boys in the Band". A poignant but important song about the journey we take as community members and allies is "Boys in the Street" by Greg Holden and Seeb. Sarah Brown talks to Lord Cashman CBE, a social campaigner dedicated to tackling poverty and social injustice. Throughout his life, Michael Cashman has championed LGBT issues and been at the centre of unfolding changes in legislation and social acceptance for LGBT people in Britain, as well as actively campaigning internationally. This episode explores the history of the LGBT movement over the last 50 years and Michael’s involvement in the many parts of this complex movement, and how its elements came together to achieve the change and equal rights it sought for LGBT people. As co-founder and the first chairman of Stonewall, a campaigning charity for LGBT rights, his approach has been to engage in the political process, by discussing and negotiating. Michael is also an actor and will forever be remembered for the first UK gay screen kiss back in 1989, on British TV series EastEnders. He’s also had a distinguished political career as an elected member of the European parliament, and continues his political activities today as a member of the House of Lords. Despite changes in laws, a shift in people’s attitudes towards the LGBT community did not change. Listen to Michael explain how a real movement came following the cruelty and ignorance of the reaction to HIV and AIDS pandemic, and Section 28 which sought to prevent the promotion of homosexuality or even the acceptance of LGBT relations.
In episode seven, editor-in-chief Matt Cain chats to former actor, activist and now member of the House of Lords, Michael Cashman. Michael discusses his role in co-founding LGBT+ rights charity Stonewall and his work to improve gay rights across the EU during his time as an MEP. He also chats about playing the first gay character in EastEnders, his involvement in the first gay kiss in British soap history, and the homophobia this unleashed from the media in the 1980s. Michael’s interview is fascinating and insightful. You won’t want to miss it! A speaker at the 1985 Conservative Party Conference was cheered when he said, “If you want a queer for your neighbour, vote Labour!” Today, many leading Conservatives support gay marriage. A watershed in the long struggle for civil rights for LGBT citizens was resistance to Clause 28, which prohibited local authorities from presenting ‘homosexuality as a pretended family relationship’. How did such hostility and prejudice give way to tolerance and now, perhaps, the possibility, at last, of equality? Speakers included Peter Tatchell (Peter Tatchell Foundation), Lisa Power MBE (Terrence Higgins Trust) and Michael Cashman MEP (Labour politician, founder of Stonewall). The event will be chaired by Dr Matt Cook (Birkbeck, University of London).
