Introducing: Media Storm's News Watch! Join Mathilda and Helena on their weekly news debriefs! We'll pick apart the most unhinged headlines and try to make sense of the mainstream media - helping you consume the news critically. This week, it's farmers (protesting the UK's new inheritance tax), football fans (bringing the Israel-Palestine conflict to the streets of Amsterdam), and food (sandwich fillings just too woke for the Daily Mail to handle). It's also Trans Awareness Week - so we'll highlight some vital stories about transgender rights that the mainstream media must have *accidentally* missed. And finally: things to think about when reading headlines on the murder of Harshita Brella. The episode is hosted and produced by Mathilda Mallinson (@mathildamall) and Helena Wadia (@helenawadia). The Art Career is honored to share a conversation with Alannah Farrell, recorded on November 8th, 2024, in their Chinatown apartment. Releasing this episode during Trans Awareness Week feels especially meaningful, but the importance of celebrating and uplifting trans voices extends to every day. Alannah's perspective is a powerful reminder of the beauty, resilience, and talent within the community. Thank you, Alannah, for sharing so much with us. Farrell is a queer, trans non-binary painter who lives and works in Chinatown on the LES, New York City. Conversations around portraiture often focus on identity, gaze, style, and expression. Their paintings touch on these but further delve into how the human psyche is affected by relationships, selfhood, place, architectural spaces, gender dysphoria, existing in a changing body, and memory. They grapple with a complex tenderness, light piercing through a brooding sadness. Farrell presents queer individuals through a lens of understanding and connection, a context shielded from a society eager to erase or enact violence. Their paintings depict more than a moment; rather, time itself unfurling before our eyes—shifting light, shifting weight, the emergence of the inner world. Furthermore, Farrell paints thoughtfully and attentively from life. They describe inviting sitters into the studio as an adrenaline rush—having to work with time as a restriction and the challenge of attempting to capture what is full of life and motion into a singular image. — BL Alannah Farrell (b. 1988, Kingston, NY) is a queer painter who lives and works in New York, NY. Farrell completed their BFA at The Cooper Union, New York, NY. They have presented their work in solo and group exhibitions at Anat Egbi, Los Angeles, CA and New York, NY; Green Family Art Foundation, Dallas, TX; Lyles and King, New York, NY; Alexander Gray Associates, New York, NY; Harper's, New York, NY; Richard Heller Gallery, Santa Monica, CA; The Painting Center, New York, NY; Theirry Goldberg Gallery, New York, NY; and UTA Artist Space, Los Angeles, CA. As Trans Awareness Week comes to an end, we prepare to observe the solemn Trans Day of Remembrance. At Queering The Air, we are committed to providing comprehensive coverage of stories and reflections pertaining to Trans Awareness Week. Our aim is to keep you informed and engaged, offering insights into the diverse experiences and challenges faced by the transgender community. Moreover, as we approach the Trans Day of Remembrance, this coverage will extend to updating you on the various events and initiatives taking place across Australia, ensuring that we honor and remember those who have lost their lives due to anti-transgender violence. Sasja hosted a discussion with Amao Leota Lu and Madison Moffat to recognise the importance of highlighting these issues and commemorating the lives of individuals who have faced discrimination and violence, as we strive to foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for the transgender community. The conversation will explore important topics surrounding gender diversity and advocacy.Amao Leota Lu, born in 1971 in Auckland, New Zealand, emigrated to Sydney with her Samoan diaspora family in the 1980s. She later returned to Australia and embraced her gender identity as a woman and a fa'afafine in her early twenties. Using her performances, she advocates for fa'afafine identity and challenges western LGBT categorizations. Leota Lu's work explores the intersection of gender identity, Pacific culture, and activism. Notably, she curated the first queer Pacific event at Midsumma Festival in 2020 and performed at the Immigration Museum with an event titled Pacific Essence: Tales of a Migrant Plantation. She also participated in Gender Euphoria as part of Melbourne International Arts Festival in 2019. Leota Lu is vocal about the discrimination faced by gender diverse members of Pacific Islander communities and has previously worked as a community support worker.Madison Moffat (She/Her) is a trans woman, Board Secretary for Transgender Victoria, consumer advisor to Monash Gender Clinic, co-facilitator of the TransCreative Network and Managing Editor of the zine on TGDNB culture community, ‘The Trans-creator'. 5 Things In 15 Minutes The Podcast: Bringing Good Vibes to DEI
Today our Senior Consultant Patti Flynn is joining me as a guest writer. This week was (and still is through today) Trans Awareness Week. This week culminates in the Trans Day of Remembrance (TDOR) tomorrow, on November 20th. TDOR was started in 1999 by a transgender advocate as a vigil to the memory of Rita Hester who was killed in anti-transgender violence. The somber nature of the end of the week stands in contrast to the prior 7 days when trans people (and cisgender allies) educate and take action. We bring attention to and lift up the work of trans creators, celebrate the success of trans people in public life, and amplify the voices of trans advocates and activists. We show the world our shared humanity and I hope that leads to more acceptance and less discrimination.Although my TDOR this year will be extra difficult as I say the name of a dear friend, I know that the example she provided to so many when she was with us here in Chicago resonates. Her advocacy and activism inspire my own, and that of many others. So, while we mourn those losses, we look forward to a brighter future. A future that is truly possible with some help from our (cis) friends. There are ways that you can help as an ally. Find a vigil in your area and go to support those there grieving, keeping in mind that this event is by and for the trans community. Seek out information about anti-trans legislation in your state, or a neighboring state, and contact your representative to register your opposition, and encourage others to do the same. And lastly, educate yourself – watching the documentary “Disclosure” on Netflix is a good starting point. Or check out the GenderCool YouTube Channel for some inspiration. Here are the good vibes I found this week:The First Female Crash Dummy Has ArrivedHow Stunning Images from Space Were Brought to Life for the Visually ImpairedAll-Terrain Wheelchairs Arrive at U.S. Parks: ‘This Is Life-Changing'& 5. This week's Tale is, moving forwards, an annual topic I'd like to return to each November - as I do spooky things on Halloween and Christmassy things around Christmas. The week this script was written (13-19 November) was Transgender Awareness week. The 20th also marked Transgender Day of Remembrance - a commemorative day, originally in observance of the unsolved hate crime murder of Rita Hester, and subsequently a day to mourn the loss of trans people the world over that year. Though I try to keep myself out of the tales, as a rule, I see no reason not to tell the tales of other trans people from history once a year - cause Trans Visibility Matters. This year we're going far back into the timeline to discuss an angry poet, a medieval barmaid, a couple of pagan religious orders, an emperor and a warrior prince/princess… Sources this week include: I wrote this script largely from memory, but did refer to This brief write up in the Jewish Virtual Library This Vice Article Adrienne Mayor's The Poison King I referred to Encyclopaedia Brittanica on a couple of details And, easily one of my favourite reads of 2022, Janina Ramirez' Femina. The blog post of the episode is here. Support the show on Patreon for just $2 US a month and get access to exclusive content. I'm currently revamping, and will be dropping re-recorded bonus content weekly for the next two months. December's episode, out on The Enfundu should be out in the coming days. However, because this week is Trans Awareness Week, we're taking a short break from hosting guests to focus on the trans community and how cis people can be better supporters and allies. We're using information from the excellent Schuyler Bailar, the Human Rights Campaign, and PFLAG to guide this conversation and we've linked back to all of these educators & organizations (and more) below. We start off by running through Schuyler Bailar's "cheat sheet" about how to re-frame the language you use when talking about, or interacting with, transgender people. We then move through a list of disinformation, anti-trans tropes and rhetoric that many people believe to be true, and dispel the myths around each item. We discuss the importance of moving away from the patriarchal gender binary and how we can support each other, and the trans, non-binary and LGBTQ+ community in general by leaving behind harmful and false heteronormative gender expectations. If you learned something from this episode, please share with those you know and love who may need more education on this important topic. Hello and welcome to rabble radio. It's the week of Friday, November 19 and I'm your host and the editor of rabble, Chelsea Nash. Thanks so much for listening! Rabble breaks down the news of the day from a progressive lens. It's a good place to catch up and catch on to what's happening in Canadian politics, activism, environment, and so much more. Listen to us on Apple podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. We catch you up on the news of the week and take you further into the stories that matter to you. This week on the show, friend of the rabble family Libby Davies interviews climate activist and land defender Rita Wong. Libby Davies is author of Outside In: a Political Memoir. She served as the MP for Vancouver East from 1997-2015, and is former NDP Deputy Leader and House Leader, and is recipient of the Order of Canada. Rita Wong is a poet-scholar who has written several books of poetry. She understands natural ecosystems as critical infrastructure that must be protected and cared for in order to survive the climate crisis. In other words, old growth forests are what remains of the Earth's lungs. They discuss Fairy Creek -- the site of ongoing protests against old-growth logging on the southern portion of Vancouver Island. The protests have been going on for over a year now, with many activists -- Rita included -- travelling to and from the region when they can at the invitation of Pacheedaht First Nation elder Bill Jones and hereditary leader Victor Peter, upon whose lands the logging is taking place. Rita has written about her experiences and the plight of the land defenders at Fairy Creek before for rabble.ca, writing: "The time I've spent at Fairy Creek is some of the most inspiring I've ever experienced, with creative, generous, kind and talented people, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, all spontaneously co-operating to uphold what Jones has asked us to: the responsibility to protect sacred forests for future generations." Libby and Rita also take some time to discuss the recent passing of Indigenous writer Lee Maracle, who was a mentor of Rita's. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT Let's stay in B.C. for just a moment. This week at rabble, national politics reporter Stephen Wentzell writes about that province's proposal to "remove criminal penalties for people who possess small amounts of illicit drugs for personal use." The proposed exemption is a big win for decriminalization activists, who have long-argued that decriminalization will help reduce the fear and shame associated with substance use that can be a barrier for people requiring care. At the same time, some activists working to combat the opioid crisis say it's not enough. Wentzell spoke to Donald MacPherson, executive director for the Canadian Drug Policy Coalition, who said he applauds the B.C. provincial government for its proposed shift, though he worries that leaving lower jurisdictions to implement varying decriminalization laws will create inconsistent and “piecemeal” policies around the country. “This is a federal law. The federal government hasn't taken this leadership,” MacPherson said. “They should be taking the leadership to decriminalize simple possession for drugs across Canada.” Also on the site this week: It's Trans Awareness Week, with Trans Remembrance Day taking place tomorrow, November 20. To mark the week, Charlotte Dalwood, a freelance writer based in Alberta, tells the story of how one woman went from being a trans ally to being an anti-trans activist, and back to an ally again (if not a passive one). Rather than arguing that trans exclusion is anti-feminist, writes Dalwood, trans women and our allies ought to instead mobilize the stories of ex-gender criticals (as the trans exclusionary movement likes to call themselves). "Whatever such people have done in the past, they are in a unique position now to pull others out of the gender-critical movement. That makes them invaluable allies." Earlier this week, columnist Chuka Ejeckam issued a warning to be wary of those who claim to speak for the Black community writ large. He tackles the controversial and, as he points out, unfounded opinion piece in the Toronto Star by Royson James, in which James attempts to take down former Star columnist and writer and activist Desmond Cole. Speaking of the Star, former Star reporter John Miller writes about the major problem facing Canadian media: a loss of public trust. He has some ideas on how we might repair that trust. All that and more, as always, on rabble.ca. EXTRO That's it for this week! We'll see you around the site, I'm sure. If you like the show please consider subscribing wherever you listen to your podcasts. Rate, review, share it with your friends -- it takes two seconds to support independent media like rabble. Follow us on social media across channels @rabbleca. Got feedback for the show? Get in touch anytime at editor@rabble.ca. I can't always promise I'll respond, but I do read everything you write in. I'm your host, Chelsea Nash. Thanks for tuning in and we'll talk next week! Thanks to our producer Breanne Doyle, Libby Davies and Rita Wong. Thanks to Karl Nerenberg for the music, and all the journalists and writers who contributed to this week's content on rabble.ca. Photo by: A.Davey (via WikiCommons)

This week is Trans Awareness Week, leading up to the Trans Day of Remembrance on Saturday. This year is particularly important because 2021 is the deadliest year on record for trans and nonbinary people in the U.S., according to the Human Rights Campaign. Kate Sosin, the LGBTQ+ Reporter for the non-profit news organization, The 19th, joins us to discuss the rights and safety of trans people in America, among other trans news. Today's episode is dedicated to Trans Awareness Week and Mermaids UK, a group supporting transgender, non-binary, and gender diverse children and their families. We are running a fundraiser to benefit the group and encourage listeners to contribute. Please click here to donate.Today – November 16th, 2021 – is 20 years to the day since Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone arrived in American theaters, the first film adaptation of (noted bigot) J.K. Rowling's worldwide sensation. Jonathan was a die-hard Harry Potter fan growing up, while Sean was a dedicated anti-Potter grump – but neither of us could escape the specter of this franchise even if we wanted to. For the 20th anniversary, we take a look back at this first film in particular – what it gets right in making this world feel special, and what it gets wrong in sticking too slavishly to source material that isn't particularly cinematic. We talk the actors, the sets, John Williams' music, and so much more – and reflect on how we see the film and Harry Potter's legacy differently 20 years later. Before the Potter talk, though, you'll also hear Jonathan's thoughts on the outstanding Forza Horizon 5 for Xbox Series S/X, and Jonathan challenges Sean in a game to recap this week's bottom-of-the-IP-barrel-scraping Disney+ news. Enjoy! And please consider donating to Mermaids UK to support trans youth if your are able.Plain text link for our fundraiser: https://tiltify.com/@jonathanlack/weeklystuffpodcastTime Chart:Intro: 0:00:00 – 0:11:05Forza Horizon 5: 0:11:05 – 0:29:08Disney+ News: 0:29:08 – 1:02:15Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: 1:02:15 – 3:23:39Harry Potter Memories: 3:23:39 – 3:40:38 Subscribe to our YouTube Channel!Subscribe to the WEEKLY SUIT GUNDAM Podcast!Subscribe for free to 'The Weekly Stuff' in Apple Podcasts!Follow Jonathan Lack on Twitter!Follow Sean Chapman on Twitter!

In the context of the Trans Awareness Week in November, we talked to Egyptian LGBTQIA+ activist „Bonobo“ about the situation in their home country. In addition to the global backlash of queer rights, repressive regulations prevent NGOs from doing their vital work. Though some successful projects exist, there is still a lot to be done. „Bonobo“ explains what actions are required in order to improve the situation, and stresses which duties the foreign cultural policy has in this fight for justice.

What do you if your gender doesn't match the body you were born into? Grace Hyland is a content creator who last came out on TikTok when she posted a photo of herself as a kid before she'd started transitioning. Grace was 4 years old when she realised she was born into the wrong body. She discovered a world of trans content creators on YouTube who helped her come to terms with her identity before she came out and began transitioning in her early teens. Now Grace is creating a space online where other young trans people (and their allies) can learn more about her story and educate themselves on the reality of being transgender. In this episode Grace shares with Sean about coming out to her family as a teenager, how she feels when people ask her questions about medically transitioning and finding (and creating) a community online. Hello dear friends,We start today off with a very casual chat about the books we’re reading. Jasmine is currently devouring Kokomo by Victoria Hannan and Maggie is gobbling up Dolly Alderton’s Ghosts. From November 13–18, it was Trans Awareness Week. Maggie attended a great talk with Minus 18 and Zoe Terakes and we also found this post on trans terminology super helpful. We then dive into Sia’s newly released trailer for her film Music. We look at why this has caused the autistic community so much hurt, as we draw from Twitter’s hashtags #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs and #ActuallyAutistic. This post by @neurodifferent was really insightful for breaking down ableist euphemisms.Jasmine recommends season four of The Crown and fawns over Princess Di’s outfits and you can see even more of her iconic looks in this article by Daisy Murray for Elle UK. Maggie recommends “'Intimate terrorism': why the murders of Hannah, Aaliyah, Laianah and Trey must spark change” by Madonna King for The Age. A trigger warning for this one as it deals with issues of abuse and domestic violence. Please reach out to Lifeline, Safe Steps, Sexual Assault Crisis Line, 1800 My Options or 1800Respect if you or a loved one needs support. Our jingle, editing and production is by India Raine. Our goal is elevate, educate, and empower those of us in the Black Queer community, and also to help our supporters and allies to become more knowledgeable about what we need as far as support! On this episode Mikey & Xay Dé speak about Trans Awareness Week. During this week, organizers come together to raise awareness about the Transgender community. They have various lectures, panels, and workshops to provide people with insight into the Trans experience. In addition to that, there are campaigns and events that take place to engage with knowledge-seekers. This week leads up to Transgender Day of Remembrance, and on this day, we reflect upon the Transgender lives that were taken from us. These two also cackle about the joys and hilarious drama of Thanksgiving - specifically typical Black Thanksgiving. They go over food, tradition, and find time to talk about Thanksgiving Clapback Memes. But, its not all fun and games. They provide a small list of coping mechanisms to handle problematic situations with relatives if you are a Black/Brown, Queer/Trans person. Lastly, they'll cover the history of Thanksgiving, including what happened to the Indigenous People once the country was "discovered" and colonized. Content Warning: Transgender Verbal & Physical Violence, Transgender murders, Family. This is the 1st episode and just in time for Trans Awareness Week! This episode of Under the Same Colores Podcast focuses on my coming out story and my 3 year update of being on hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
One orgasm to report! And lucky you, I recorded the event. BUT, it was extremely brief and underwhelming, though still true and real and all that so give it a listen. I’ve included the clip at the end of my rambling about the past week and my hopes and dreams for the orgy I’ll be attending this Wednesday. And hey! It’s Trans Awareness Week and it just so happens that Episodes 81 and 83 detail the journey of one woman’s transition and all that the experience entails. Check out Parts 1 and 2 of my interview with “C” as she describes coming out to her friends, family and colleagues, as well as what it’s been like sexually now that she is living her truth.Episode 81: “C” Comes Out As A Woman, Part 1Episode 83: “C” Comes Out As A Woman, Part 2Till Thursday…

It's Trans Awareness Week! In 2018, the representation of transgender actors and actresses on film and television has increased significantly. The '80s-set FX series Pose cast the highest number of transgender actresses as series regulars, while a successful campaign against cisgender actress Scarlett Johansson playing the role of transgender man Dante "Tex" Bill in the film Rub & Tug ensured that the role would go to a trans actor, should the film go into production. Although there is still room for more change, these 10 Black trans actors and actresses are paving the way and changing the way we look at film and television.

Special guest Lucas Fowler joins us to give more insight into the trans community and how all of us can be better and more effective allies. We would love feedback and film requests, so feel free to email us at cinemaqueens@gmail.com and on social media @CinemaQueens!
