Dementia is a family disease that affects not just the afflicted person but everyone who loves, depends on, and cares for her. Alzheimer's and related diseases don't kill off their victims right away but instead drains them over years of their ability to think or do or even really be themselves. Watching that happen is horrifying and tests caregivers. Writer Will Doolittle knows this. Seven and one half years ago his wife Bella was diagnosed with Alzheimer and told she probably had eight years to live. He writes about how the disease has changed their lives. Rosemary's family care for her 98-year-old mother who is slowly disappearing. Ruth Fish is a nurse practitioner who offer support and hope and sees the bright spots for families like Doolittle's and Armao's. Will Doolittle is 64. He met his wife, Bella, when he was 13 and living in Saranac Lake, and she came over from Lake Placid to see her boyfriend, Dave, who was one of Will's best friends. Bella was 15. Will worked at the Adirondack Daily Enterprise, his family's business, as a teenager, and then again after college and some time abroad. In 1986, he was living in Lake Placid,, working on the newspaper there, when he went into the Lake Placid bar P.J. O'Neill's and, after pushing through a crowd, saw a bartender he thought he recognized. "I think I know you," he said to Bella. "Yeah? Half the guys in here think they know me," she said. Before long  they were seeing each other. After several months, Will moved into the apartment in Saranac Lake where Bella lived with her two children, Travis and Ginny, who were 8 and 7.  Will and Bella got married in April of 1990, and the family moved the next year to Malone, where Will worked as the editor of the local paper, the Telegram.  Bella commuted to Saranac Lake to continue working as a photographer for the Enterprise, then took a job as a bartender at a notorious biker bar in Malone.  They moved to Glens Falls in the fall of 1993, where Will had taken a job as an editor at the Post-Star. He worked as night, Sunday, features, editorial page and special projects editor — not all at once — over the next 29 years, retiring in January of 2022 to stay home and take care of Bella full-time.  Bella worked various jobs and finished her undergraduate degree, then got a master's and a teaching certificate while she was working full time as a domestic violence counselor at Catholic Charities.  Will and Bella adopted their son Zo in 1990 and daughter Tam a couple of years later.  Bella took a job as a teacher and administrator for the Ticonderoga branch campus of North Country Community College but was forced to retire in 2018 after informing the college in 2017 she had been diagnosed with Alzheimers.   Will was able to keep working for a few years but eventually had to stop. He is now writing a memoir that will include what's happening with my life now with Bella. He also writes a Substack column about that which you can read here: https://kentingley.substack.com/ Ruth E. Fish is a certified family nurse practitioner with more than 35 years of experience in internal medicine and geriatrics. The Root Cause Medicine Podcast is created by Rupa Health, the best way to order, track & manage results from 30+ lab companies in one place for free. The Root Cause Medicine Podcast is a weekly one-on-one conversation with renowned medical experts, specialists, and pioneers who are influencing the way we look at our health and wellbeing. This week we're joined by Greer McGuinness, Clinical Lab Educator at Vibrant Wellness and Founder of Biomedical Healing For Kids. In this episode, Greer McGuinness answers questions about toxins and the impact of toxic exposures on our health. With more than fifteen years of experience in the medical field, Greer McGuinness is a biomedical clinician. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Food Science from SUNY Plattsburgh and a Master's degree in Science from Central Michigan University. Additionally, she is a Certified Leap Therapist, having helped many individuals with food allergies and intolerances. Learn more about toxins by checking out the key takeaways of this episode or the transcript below. Key Takeaways: Uncovering toxin exposure People are exposed to over 700,000 toxins daily, mostly man-made chemicals such as plastics, parabens, and heavy metals. Many underestimate the impact of small doses of chemicals. The "dose makes the poison" concept is not applicable when considering multiple toxins. Our current generation is more toxic than ever, and children have a shorter life expectancy than previous generations due to chemical exposure. Toxin exposure symptoms in adults Toxic exposure in adults can cause various symptoms, including weight gain, autoimmune issues, reproductive issues, infertility, fatigue, chronic fatigue, gut and liver issues, and hormonal imbalances, which can lead to endometriosis. Moreover, toxins act like estrogen in the body, and this can lead to symptoms even when hormone levels appear normal. Endocrine disruptors such as plastics, microplastics, parabens, and other products that women use daily can bioaccumulate in the body and throw off its balance. Decrease your toxic load While the body naturally detoxes, the toxic load in our society is much higher than it has been in the past. This can lead to an overload on the liver which can cause bioaccumulation of toxins. To help with this, Greer created the Rebalance Method, which focuses on improving bile and pancreatic lactase flow. It's also important to consider the lymphatic system; physical exercise is the best way to detox it. The four pillars of detoxification Reducing exposure to toxins starts with testing first, followed by applying the four pillars of reducing toxin exposure. These include getting water filtration systems, incorporating organic food, improving air quality, and getting good-quality personal care products. For more information, consult the Toxin-Free Living Guide. Investigating PFAS toxins in everyday items PFAS are called the "forever chemicals" because scientists don't know how to break them down. They can be found in everyday items such as panties, yoga pants, waterproof jackets, shoes, and sports bras. As a result, 99% of people in the United States have PFAS toxins in their systems. Also, check out Greer's recommended lab testing: Micronutrient testing, Vibrant's Total Tox Burden test, and PFAS testing. Artist Spotlight with Chip Freund

Growing up in Catskill, NY, Jim was constantly drawing. This led to being the art editor of his high school yearbook, majoring in Fine Arts at SUNY Plattsburgh, and obtaining a BS in Art Education from Florida International University of Miami in December 1979. Jim dreamed of being an art instructor and artist, however, that was put on a 35 year hold! Jim went to work for IBM in September 1979 in Boca Raton, FL. Later he transferred to Raleigh, NC in 1999. He retired from IBM as a Vice President in September 2014 and worked at Lenovo through January 2015. Now retired, Jim pursues his life-long dream of being an artist. His oil  paintings include primarily landscapes, city scenes, and local Raleigh landmarks. He has also taught art (K - 5th grade and adult classes) part-time at Champion Learning Academy in Morrisville, N.C from October 2017 through June 2019Jim is an associate member of the American Impressionist Society, the Oil Painters of America, the Pastel Society of America, an Elected Associate Member of the American Artists Professional League, a member of the Pastel Society of Southern California, and a member of the Pastel Society of North Carolina.Jim's Artist Statement:  My foundation is built from my early college years and most recently the instruction I have received in numerous workshops, most notably the workshops with my teacher, mentor, and friend Albert Handell.  I am on a journey, a road to discovery of the artist that I am and will become. I paint what I want to paint - what excites me, what motivates me, and what challenges me. I find myself seeking beauty in whatever subject is presented to me. Art is for keeps and I hope my paintings will spark an emotion or a memory with the viewer. He tells us his life story, beginning with his experience growing up in the South Bronx, then moving to Puerto Rico as a young adult, and returning to the continental U.S. to pursue his career as a college professor. J.L. Torres helped us dismantle the myth that those who study humanities will face an uncertain financial future, and shares facts about the multiple CEOs of Fortune 500 companies who studied degrees like English and Philosophy. Given his vast experience teaching American and Latinx Literature and Creative Writing, as well as his formal education, we couldn't pass on the opportunity to discuss the term LATINX, its purpose, and the strong reactions it provokes on many people.  We also discussed his recent book Migrations, his upcoming novel about the life of Puerto Rican icon Roberto Clemente, and how he chooses to discuss difficult topics in his literary works that the latinx community often prefers to avoid.  Check out J.L.
