A former folk music duo reunites at the request of an eccentric man living on a remote island. That sounds like it could possibly be the set-up for a horror movie, but The Ballad of Wallis Island is anything but. Listen as Ashley & Matt review this new indie film.

Directed by Joachim Rønning and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, the true story evokes the fondest memories of other live-action Disney productions such as "Remember The Titans" and "Cool Runnings." To accompany the launch of my new book, I have interviewed some of my favourite thinkers on the topic of success, failure and creativity — and the most common success myths. Today's guest is British actor Sian Clifford, probably best known for playing Claire in Fleabag (the toilet scene! The hair scene! The “the only person I'd run through an airport for is you” line! *chefs kiss*) I have re-watched both seasons of Fleabag so many times and it is Sian who I am totally mesmerised by the most each time. She is also a treasured friend of mine (we've seen each other through a lot) and I was so lucky that she even agreed to read the audiobook for my first novel Olive, in the middle of a lockdown, no less!) I am a fan of her work on screen but it's her writing that also has me feverishly wanting more. I am loving her creative love affair with her Substack, rebooting her project Still Space (first born back in 2015) where she communicates passionately and poetically about culture, art, books, stillness and creativity. I encourage you to have a read. Here Sian discusses her three success myths: the ‘then and when' theory, the myth of busyness and the myth of perfectionism. Also, how winning a BAFTA doesn't actually mean you're on Cloud 9 forever — life and pressures continue on in other ways — aka the arrival myth, which she generously shares with us.Order your copy of The Success Myth here: https://linktr.ee/thesuccessmyth Hosted on Acast. Episode Notes Happy New Year! We hope you all have a kickass 2022. In a special episode, we discuss one of Poppy's favourite Discworld books Hogfather. The Discworld books are receiving new audiobook versions and we believe that this is the first one to be released. It is read by Sian Clifford, Bill Nighy (doing the footnotes), and, Peter Serafinowicz (as DEATH). We had a great time chatting about it. The Blurb: 'Twas the night before Hogswatch and all through the house...something was missing. The stockings are hanging ready, the sherry and pies are waiting by the fireplace - but where is the jolly fat man with his sack? It's not right to find Death creeping down chimneys and trying to say Ho Ho Ho - but someone's got to bring the little kiddies their presents. Or else they might stop believing. Belief is important in Discworld, particularly on the last night of the year when the time is turning. If the real man in the red suit isn't found by morning, there won't be a morning. Ever again... The Discworld novels can be read in any order but Hogfather is the fourth book in the Death series; a festive feast of darkness (but with jolly robots and tinsel too). Massive spoiler warnings of course, because we can't talk about all the fourth-wall breaks, the horrible Godmother, the sex, and most definitely the Hot Priest without spoiling everything. Along the way there's also tangents into British podcasts, Irish television, and Scottish castles. http://www.scottishlaird.co.uk/#_a_2gk Prefer your podcasts in youtube form? The outro music is a clip from Flea Circus by Lemur. https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Lemur/Lemur/07_lemur_-_flea_circus The actress Elizabeth was trying to think of, the one who looks like Fleabag's sister? She was thinking of Indira Varma, who keeps dying in shows we like. (Fleabag's sister is played by Sian Clifford, who also looks like Michelle Evans-Fecci from Great British Baking Show.) BAFTA winning Fleabag star Sian Clifford may not have graced our screens with the infamous pencil haircut had it not been for her ‘Thank You, Next' and overcoming a chapter in her life which at the time felt hideous but perhaps shaped her.As well as Fleabag, you will also know Sian from starring in Vanity Fair and alongside Matthew Macfadyen in the miniseries Quiz, based on the coughing scandal on Who Wants to Be A Millionaire? But what is Sian's Thank you, Next…You can still listen back to the full episode with Sian below:https://podfollow.com/thanksamillion/episode/b8bf54e93f302efa3ed55b30a65a89d68b614dc8/view If you're not already, make sure you're subscribed to my Weekly Newsletter. It's a VERY SPECIAL DAY! We are finally replying to emails and answering your questions about all things Fleabag, podcasting, and Taylor Swift theories. Yes, Taylor Swift THEORIES, featuring a very special guest, Allie's friend Colleen aka Swiftie Supreme. This episode is a tribute to the wonderful people who make up our Fleabag Situation listener community and we cannot thank you all enough.
Chrissie and Allie are back IN PERSON to squeeze every last drop out of The Scriptures with a chat about Phoebe's "additional material," namely stories and appreciations of the cast, crew, friends and family who made Fleabag possible. Plus, get the first news about what's next for your favorite podcast chatterboxes...
Love may be awful, but Chrissie and Allie are finally ready to relive the heartbreak of season 2, episode 6 through The Scriptures. Even after umpteen rewatches, the final scene still generates....some feelings. Lots and lots of feelings.
Clive Anderson and Tom Allen are joined by Hugh Bonneville, Michael Cashman, Sian Clifford and Omari Douglas for an eclectic mix of conversation, music and comedy. With music from Tongue Fu and Mosa Wild.
It's double-decker treat for two dedicated fandoms! We had a blast chatting with Dan Gage, assistant editor for Fleabag season 2 and editor of the lockdown hit Staged, starring Michael Sheen and David Tennant. (Or David Tennant and Michael Sheen, depending who you ask.) And Staged also features a certain Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Who you may know from Fleabag. It's all one big Venn diagram of delight. Plus, we cover the breaking news about Donald Glover and PWB working together and try to recover after our souls leave our bodies.
In 2006 a friend of the actor and writer Lorien Haynes died. Haynes's grief has found unusual expression - in a romantic comedy starring Sian Clifford and Nikesh Patel. In Good Grief the central character is dead. Director Natalie Abrahami has created an unusual hybrid of film and theatre, shot in what looks like a rehearsal studio, with a set of cardboard boxes - one marked 'cupboard'. Between scenes we see the crew setting lights and microphones. The critic Alice Saville reviews. Comic novelist Shalom Auslander talks to Tom about his latest novel, Mother for Dinner. Seventh Seltzer is a Cannibal-American who has done everything he can to break from his past, but in his overbearing, narcissistic mother's last moments he is drawn back into the life he left behind. At her deathbed, she whispers in his ear the two words he always knew she would: Eat me. The book explores ideas of legacy, assimilation, the things we owe our families, and the things we owe ourselves. As the National Gallery in London announces plans for its 200th anniversary in 2024, we discuss how museums and galleries might be different in a post pandemic future. With National Gallery Director Gabriele Finaldi and David Anderson, Director of the National Museums of Wales. Presenter: Tom Sutcliffe Producer: Timothy Prosser
Plus we talk to Gala Gordon and Isabella Macpherson of Platform Presents on the hybrids giving a boost to the performing arts industry and meet the young film-maker celebrating Rachel Carson and Silent Spring in a new film Nevergreen. Emma Gannon is a “Sunday Times” bestselling author, speaker, novelist, and host of the no. 1 careers podcast in the UK, Ctrl Alt Delete. As someone whose career trajectory “zig-zagged” and was anything but linear, Emma is the perfect guest to give insight into side hustles and having the courage to double down on your creativity. After all, she is a multi-hyphenate herself -- someone with various titles. The truth is, we are all more than our LinkedIn job titles and our Instagram bios, and we are all multifaceted. Emma's various talents have taken her from blogger since 2009, to podcast host since 2016, and author of four books (so far). Her recent non-fiction work includes the bestseller “The Multi-Hyphen Method” (a manifesto for multi-hyphenates crafting work on their own terms) and “Sabotage” (tips on how to silence your inner critic and get out of your own way). She was selected in the 2018 Forbes 30 under 30 list. Her WEBBY-nominated podcast “Ctrl, Alt, Delete” is a non-traditional careers podcast founded in 2016 and gives insight into people who've looked at their interests to shape the work they do. It has had nearly 8 million downloads, with guests including Elizabeth Gilbert, Ava Duvernay and Glennon Doyle. In July 2020, her first novel “OLIVE” was published by HarperCollins. The audiobook is narrated by “Fleabag”'s BAFTA-winning actor Sian Clifford and the American version is set for a March 2021 release. Emma also writes a weekly newsletter called The Hyphen that is an exploration of ideas that have got her thinking in new ways, and a book club, The Hyphen Book Club. It's the penultimate episode of The Scriptures, as Chrissie and Allie pore over the script for season 2, episode 5. We find out the Hot Misogynist is really good at it, the Priest just needed permission, and the rest of us have never wanted so badly to be a trench coat belt.

Chrissie and Allie breathed a sigh of relief after Joe Biden's win and finally have the emotional fortitude to talk about The Scriptures season 2, episode 4. Along the way, they discuss the Georgia runoffs, Ted Lasso, vulnerability, funeral customs, our place in the universe, and Taco Bell. It's nothing short of fucking beautiful.
“I spent the rest of the day wondering….do I have a massive asshole?”- FleabagPhoebe Waller-Bridge's one-woman-play turned Netflix show Fleabag is equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking. We discuss why we can't tear our eyes away from the fourth wall breaking black comedy and we have a fairly spirited debate over which season is better. And we're also going to be talking about big data, from the Cambridge Analytica/Facebook scandal to Trump trying to ban TikTok. How much data do social media apps have about us? This episode has to run like cockwork. We mean... cockwork. Sorry, our brains are somewhere else right now. Either way, Chrissie and Allie throw their hat in the ring for Best Women in (Podcast) Business and pay homage to the tragic history of the Fox Boys as they open season 2, episode 3 of The Scriptures.

Grab a cupcake and raise a G&T--it's the first anniversary of The Fleabag Situation! Chrissie and Allie are beyond thrilled to celebrate with the joint return of Fleabag production designer Jonathan Paul Green and season 2 costume designer Ray Holman. Plus we FINALLY get around to reading some listener emails and discuss your Fleabag thoughts and theories.
Sian Clifford is now officially a BAFTA-winning actor, possibly solely for the way she says "Tooting" in this episode. Chrissie and Allie celebrate her delightful victory and play doctor with Andrew Scott (but not in the way they'd like) before delving into season 2, episode 2 of The Scriptures.
Chrissie and Allie open Fleabag's New Testament and begin studying season 2 of The Scriptures. Listen for news about Andrew Scott and Phoebe Waller-Bridge reuniting on “His Dark Materials,” Andrew appearing in a new play at The Old Vic, and more excitement during this very special family gang bang.
On a day that felt equal parts heaven (the SpaceX launch) and hell (riots across U.S. cities), Chrissie and Allie try to find respite in the divine words of The Scriptures season 1, episode 6. Hear the good news about the Fleabag stage play rental extension, a prophesy about an upcoming Zoom Q&A for our Facebook group, and the eternal blessing that is Andrew Scott telling us everything will be all right.
Actress Sian Clifford (Fleabag, Vanity Fair) talks about starring as Diana Ingram, the British woman accused of helping cheat Who Wants to Be a Millionaire out of a million bucks, in AMC's 3-part limited series Quiz. She recalls her memories of growing up watching Who Wants to Be A Millionaire with her own family and how the game show became a national obsession across the UK (and then all across the world). She talks about working with Michael Sheen and Matthew McFadden on Quiz, what it felt like to sit in the real Who Wants to Be a Millionaire hot seat, and what she hopes will happen when the Charles and Diana Ingram’s conviction is up for appeal this year. Plus Sian talks about her Emmy nominated role as Claire in the hit television series Fleabag and her longtime friendship with the shows creator and star Phoebe Waller Bridge. See Sian Clifford in the three-part miniseries Quiz, premiering Sunday, May 31 at 10/9c on AMC. Visit www.amc.com for more information.
The quarantine feels like it's reaching Biblical proportions, so Chrissie and Allie are turning to the Scriptures for solace and breaking down season 1, episode 5. Plus get a recap of our incredible Zoom Q&A with production designer Jonathan Paul Green, costume designer Ray Holman, hair and makeup designer Pippa Woods, and story editor (and Run executive producer) Jenny Robins!

You know the saying: Behind every beautiful woman in a jumpsuit is a talented man who found that jumpsuit for £38 at Topshop. That's right, costume designer Ray Holman joins Chrissie and Allie for a detailed conversation about the pieces that gave season 2 its signature style. Get the scoop on the legendary (navy!) jumpsuit, how Ray improvised on the Priest's blue jumper to show off "his arms," and his last-minute trip to Armani with Kristin Scott Thomas to shop for Belinda. Oh, and we even got a knockout recipe for gluten-free banana bread out of the deal.

Chrissie and Allie try recording on this Zoom thing that's all the rage with the kids these days to study season 1, episode 4 of The Scriptures. But first get all the deets on your chance to stream the Fleabag stage play for charity, Andrew Scott's isolation essentials (as told to his stylist, Teo Van Den Broeke), and how to be part of our fan art creative challenge, #fleabag30.
A new ITV drama, Quiz, explores the Who Wants to be a Millionaire? coughing scandal of 2001. Charles Ingram, a former British Army major, his wife Diana and another contestant were found guilt of conspiring to cheat the show to win the top prize. Diana is played by Sian Clifford, who is best known for playing Phoebe Waller Bridge's TV sister Claire in Fleabag. Caring for your partner, your parent, your friend with dementia one on one can be challenging at any time but how are people coping isolated in lockdown? What are the extra pressures they face? We speak to Liz Brookes, former nurse. She lives outside of Manchester with her husband Mike, who has had vascular dementia for nine years now. EastEnders and Coronation Street are celebrating anniversaries this year. Then there's Emmerdale, Hollyoaks, Rivercity, Doctors, not forgetting Holby, Casualty and all the Australian ones. Whatever's going on in real life, soap operas reflect it. So what is their appeal and how are they faring during lockdown? Comedians and real life couple Catherine Bohart and Sarah Keyworth discuss their weekly podcast You'll Do: Why we stick with the people we love, examining the real un-romanticised version of relationships. Matthew Macfadyen & Sian Clifford stop by the pod this week to discuss ITV's Quiz. Plus it's wall-to-wall reviews as we make up for last week's leaner slate with out takes on Season 3 of Killing Eve (finally!), Alex Garland's twisted mystery Devs, HBO comedy/thriller Run, the aforementioned Quiz and the latest season of Bosch. Plus we take a dive into the world of book series we'd like to see adapted to the small screen and reel off about fifteen bits of different Tiger King news.
On Easter Monday ITV will broadcast the first instalment of Quiz, the adaptation by James Graham of his play about the coughing controversy and the major convicted of cheating on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Graham tells Kirsty Lang why the story remains important. It's about truth, fact and power - the power of television. And there's a remarkable performance by Michael Sheen as Chris Tarrant. Braids was scheduled to premiere at the Live Theatre in Newcastle this April. Longlisted for the Alfred Fagon Award, it follows two girls – Jasmine and Abeni - who navigate growing up as the only people of colour in a rural part of Durham. Kirsty is joined by writer Olivia Hannah, and actors Olivia Onyehara and Cynthia Emeagi, who will be performing a scene from the play. With Front Row focusing on ‘listening’ this week, music writer Kieran Yates considers the changing landscape of music, from live radio broadcasts to live streaming and ‘quarantine concerts’. She also discusses the listening experience of what’s called 8D audio, and the importance of listening on headphones. And the death of the singer songwriter John Prine, who won the respect of Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Kris Kristofferson. Say it with us: This is an EXCELLENT one. It's Boo herself, Jenny Rainsford! Jenny joins Chrissie and Allie from lockdown in London to chat about hiding a 7-months' pregnant belly in the Fleabag pilot, working with Phoebe on a last-minute change one of season 2's most critical scenes, the surprising cameo by her niece at the church fete, and the challenges of parenting during social distancing. Plus Jenny answers listener questions from our Facebook group!
It's Allie's birthday week! We're celebrating with a discussion of Claire's birthday business, the fact that Boo's boyfriend actually has a name, and--for some reason--a hypothetical choice between sex with Martin or with Fleabag's dad.
It's a Chatty Ash Wednesday for Chrissie and Allie and they're studying the only Scriptures that matter (to them, anyway). First, a behind-the-scenes recap of the Gary Dollner interview, new PWB radio appearances, the sexiest unintentional Fleabag artwork ever, and a celebration of Hollywood's celebration of female horniness.
What...the FUCK?! Like the Priest meeting Hilary for the first time, Chrissie and Allie are beyond thrilled to chat with the Emmy Award-winning editor of Fleabag, Gary Dollner. Hear what he found to be the most difficult scene to edit, why he became fixated on Brett Gelman eating a green bean, and his reaction to seeing Dollner Ave. as the bus destination in the final scene--along with much, much more that may or may not include a description of Andrew Scott in swim shorts.
Allie and Chrissie had an *absolutely marvelous* time seeing the NT Live screening of Present Laughter, and now they're ready to dive into the Good Book we all know as Fleabag: The Scriptures. But first they take a moment to appreciate the newly crowned best comedy in Britain, Mrs. Brown's Boys.
Awards season in the U.S. comes to a close for Fleabag, and Andrew, Phoebe and crew have quite a haul of hardware to stuff into the overhead compartment on the flight back home. Chrissie and Allie have a double wrap-up on the red carpets, that red suit, and those Baja Fresh burritos.
What a year, huh? (What's that? It's only mid-January?) Well, 2020 is off to smashing start with Fleabag and PWB taking home Golden Globes, Andrew Scott getting sassy with reporters, and Sian Clifford becoming Audrey Hepburn before our very eyes. Chrissie and Allie recap this year's awards and manage to talk for less than 5 hours.
Allie met PWB! Allie met PWB! Chrissie and Allie flew up to New York last-minute to attend Phoebe Waller-Bridge's event at the Town Hall in New York, and they've got a full report of the onstage conversation--along with the gripping tale of Allie's brief post-show encounter with PWB, courtesy of New York City traffic.
The bus to Dollner Avenue is running late, and so are Chrissie and Allie as they talk into the wee hours of the night about the series finale (at least for the next 15 years or so).
The National Theatre Live encore screening of Phoebe Waller-Bridge's original stage play finally made its way to Atlanta! Chrissie and Allie had a front-row (well, more like 10th or 11th row) seat and chatted afterwards to talk through what's different, what's the same, and what's even more impressive about PWB.
The Hot Misogynist is really good at it, but Fleabag is really bad at pretending her heart (and body) aren't focused solely on reconnecting with the Priest. Claire loses her hair but gains a Klare, Bank Manager makes off with the pinny, and this time Fleabag gives Martin an emotional punch in the gut to follow up her physical punch to the face. Chrissie and Allie are perfectly balanced as they leave no stone unturned and no trench coat unopened.
Sian Clifford is one of the most recognised faces in television today, thanks to her role as Claire in the hit Phoebe Waller-Bridge comedy-drama Fleabag, a role which has earned her an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy. And if that wasn't keeping her busy enough, she's also the founder of digital wellness and meditation platform Still Space! Starling and Sian met up to discuss acting, struggling to get a big break, what to do when it all gets too quiet, or too busy... And coping strategies for daily life and success. This episode was recorded live in front of an audience at Soho House, Soho Works on October 26th 2019. Starling's World is a podcast about making it in the creative industries. Every two weeks, rising star Starling interviews a creative industry professional at the top of their game, from songwriters to film makers, producers, managers and agents, right up to major label execs. Creativity is a bitch: it creeps up on you in the bath, it’s not there when you plan for it and the path to success is as clear as trying to find your tent in a festival site. With no torch. Pop singer Starling has created a podcast interviewing top industry creatives including Bjork producer Damian Taylor, Former Head of Specialist Factual at C4 David Glover (he created Gogglebox), and many more. The aim? To help people aspiring to make it in the creative industries by learning from the experts: What makes them tick, how they got to the top of one of the world's toughest industries, their mistakes, triumphs, and the moments that made them who they are.

Fleabag and the Priest seem ready for a rom-com when they spend a morning together trying on robes, testing out a Quaker meeting, and talking about guinea pigs. But the rising tension sends both of them to their corners for an afternoon of introspection (and a little alcohol) that leads to Confession, connection, and the scene that changed the word "kneel" forever. Chrissie and Allie pull back the curtain for a marathon analysis.
Claire hosts the Women in Business Awards, where we meet new faces (Belinda, Klare) and unexpectedly reunite with an old friend (The Statue). Fleabag and Belinda have a now-legendary conversation about feminism and flirting over martinis before Fleabag talks faith, friendship and foxes over G&Ts with the Priest. Chrissie and Allie pour a glass or two of red wine and dive in deep.
Fleabag is sniffing Bibles and swigging G&Ts as things start warming up with Hot Priest. From the counselor's dry forearms to Pam's cupcake situation to Harry's postnatal depression, Chrissie and Allie have it covered. Plus: a quick breakdown of PWB on SNL! #hornstorm
A cafe filled with guinea pig decor? Paintings falling off church walls? A giant wall of cocks? It was all in a day’s work for Jonathan Paul Green, the production designer on “Fleabag.” Chrissie and Allie got a chance to talk to Jonathan and get the behind-the-scenes scoop on some burning fan questions.
PWB literally sets the table for season 2 with a dinner party that serves up forced laughs, passive aggression, abundant alcohol, and one Hot Priest. Chrissie and Allie are joined by friend and fellow Fleabag fan Khaki Jones to dig into this instant-classic, Emmy Award-winning episode.
Kneel before the Queen! PWB was the MVP of Emmy night, and Chrissie and Allie stayed up late so they could break it all down in a special bonus Emmy recap episode.
The glasses hit the floor and the shit hits the fan at Godmother's "sexhibition" as Fleabag comes face to face with her guilt, her grief, and one perfectly timed Bank Manager.
Break out the hair scarves and Champagne--it's time for Mum's memorial lunch. Fleabag and Claire try to survive an afternoon with Dad and Godmother with an assist from Arsehole Guy, but only Felicity the cat makes it out unscathed.
Fleabag and Claire might be at a silent retreat, but Chrissie and Allie won't shut up about Emmy predictions, tiny batteries, and surprisingly vulnerable bank managers. Well done, Patricia.
Phoebe and Andrew handed out G&Ts to people and pet a dog together, but Chrissie and Allie managed to start breathing again and burrow into episode 3 of season 1.
Allie tells the sad, angry tale of her childhood guinea pig, Cookies n’ Cream, as she and Chrissie talk through how Fleabag’s coping mechanisms begin to crack at the same time she’s dealing with her tiny, bleeding vagina. HOT.
Chrissie met Andrew Scott (twice) in London, then she and Allie decided to start a FLEABAG podcast because it was becoming medically necessary. We start breaking down the full series, scene by scene.

On this week's episode of Kickin' & Streamin' Podcast, Graham & Jocelyn discuss Amazon Video's Original series Fleabag, starring Emmy-nominated British actress and screen writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Before getting into the main topic, the two co-hosts also tell listeners about what will be streaming on their favorite streaming services during the upcoming month of August. In the midst of that discussion, Graham reveals to Jocelyn how he once accidentally rented the movie "To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything Julie Newmar" thinking it was a martial arts movie. Graham & Jocelyn spar over who likes or dislikes old movies; Graham has no tolerance for old movies due to the fake, over-dramatization in the voice of the old movie actors. Jocelyn loves old movies, but can't stand old Western movies. The discussion continues about movies which will be available on Netflix & Hulu next month. Jocelyn tells Graham she intended to watch the movie The Lincoln Lawyer; which someone whose opinion she respects recommended she should watch, Jocelyn also tells Graham about a movie entitled Cutting Edge, while Graham in turn tells Jocelyn about when he watched the Woody Harrelson, Wesley Snipes, and Rosie Perez flick: White Men Can't Jump. Jocelyn reveals she's excited after seeing trailers for two movies coming out, specifically a movie entitled Jojo Rabbit in which New Zealander actor and director Taika Waititi plays the role of Hitler, we both had a laugh at the reason Mr Waititi provided for not doing any research to prepare for the role of Hitler. Jocelyn is excited about the trailer release for the movie Mr. Rogers starring Tom Hanks, but she doesn't think Tom Hanks has a great resemblance to Mr. Rogers. We got into the topic of the day as we began our discussion about Fleabag. Listen further to hear what we think and why we love Fleabag the series, but we don't like Fleabag the character Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/rss/kickinandstreaminpodcast?auth=QVLr3ZF4bBkffNZls4lBWTuUc2Tb0MD0)
On this week's installment of Mental Health Monday, Mick Coyle is joined by actor Sian Clifford (Fleabag, Vanity Fair) for a frank and open discussion of mental health & mindfulness. Sian reflects on her own experiences managing depression, her experiences with meditation & mindfulness, and how (to quote Fleabag) 'hair is everything'. Learn more about Sian's mindfulness project Still Space at still-space.com. Originally broadcast 17th June 2019. Follow @MrMickCoyle & @SiansUniverse. Produced by @John_Fogarty.
Valerie, Angela and Tatiana discuss Disney taking over Hulu and what this means for our viewing habits (0:53), then discus what The Flash and Arrow finales mean for Crisis on Infinite Earths (12:00). We review Detective Pikachu (27:20) and Tolkien (34:00), both films that were better than expected, while complaining about Game of Thrones turning out much worse (43:00). Finally, we share an interview with Sian Clifford of Fleabag (1:24:00).
"Fleabag" is a hilarious and poignant window into the mind of a dry-witted, sexual, angry, grief-riddled woman, as she hurls herself at modern living in London. Award-winning playwright Phoebe Waller-Bridge writes and stars as Fleabag, an unfiltered woman trying to heal, while rejecting anyone who tries to help her and keeping up her bravado all along. Creator/star Phoebe Waller-Bridge and co-stars Sian Clifford, Brett Gelman joined BUILD to discuss season 2 of the show.
Pullitzer Prize-winning playwright Annie Baker’s Circle Mirror Transformation is being revived by director Bijan Sheibani for HOME Manchester in March 2018. Set in a creative drama class in a community centre in Vermont, the cast comprises Amelia Bullmore as Marty, Anthony Ofoegbu as James, Sian Clifford as Theresa, Con O’Neill as Schultz and Yasmin Paige as Lauren. Just over a week before the production opened, BTG editor David Chadderton spoke to Sian Clifford and Anthony Ofoegbu during their lunch break from rehearsals about the play, meta-acting, accents, pauses and hula-hooping. Circle Mirror Transformation runs at HOME Manchester from 2 to 17 March 2018.
SPOILER: Reviewing movies, books & TV shows in their entirety
“I just want to cry… all the time” This week we’re watching Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s dark comedy ‘Fleabag’, starring Waller-Bridge herself, Sian Clifford, Bill Paterson, Olivia Colman and Hugh Dennis. Both Rachael and Andy share stories of how their own mental health issues affected their first viewings of the series, which the whole team concur is an astounding piece of television. While Paul wonders if the play from which the series originated might cure his aversion to the theatre, Rachael yet again finds herself falling in love with a captivating leading lady. As Andy celebrates the presence of Bill Paterson with a simple one-word declaration, Olivia Colman’s dead on portrayal of an evil stepmother brings out Rachael’s inner slapper! And Paul uses the presence of Hugh Dennis as an opportunity to quote the ‘Mary Whitehouse Experience’ sketches that he knows word for word. Elsewhere, Andy takes a look at the time-honoured art of fourth-wall breaking and asks the all-important question: Is ‘Deadpool’ any more revolutionary than ‘Lovejoy’? This week’s scale: BBC3 or ITV3
