For this special International Women's Day episode, we are joined by Cherie Blair, CBE KC, a distinguished barrister and human rights lawyer. A passionate advocate for women's rights, Cherie is a true champion for gender equality. In this episode we discuss with her the impactful work of the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women, which she founded in 2008. The Foundation empowers women entrepreneurs in low and middle-income countries by providing skills, technology, and financial resources. They have just published a new report that highlights how digital technologies are a double-edged sword for women entrepreneurs in low and middle-income countries. While providing invaluable new ways of growing a business, the rise in online sexual harassment and misogyny aimed at female entrepreneurs is undermining the benefits of the technological revolution. The wide-ranging conversation explores the importance of economic gender justice and how empowering women can lead to broader societal benefits.
Book Club #129 - A Voyage Around The Queen - Richard talks to journalist Craig Brown about his fantastic biography of Queen Elizabeth II, A Voyage Around the Queen. They discuss his glorious tangential approach to biography which he's already used to great effect in books on Princess Margaret and the Beatles, how the Queen in an alternate universe might have been a more anonymous figure, how she had been there through almost all of our lives, the occasionally excretory effect she had on people how met her, whether it's possible to grasp her real character, the profundity of people queuing to see her lying in state, the possible truth about Michael Fagan and how Rich might have figured in the book had he been a little braver. Plus how Royal protocol resulted in Cherie Blair getting pregnant, how Craig upset Donald Trump and the wrong uns that drifted through the Queen's life.Buy the book here - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Voyage-Around-Queen-bestselling-biography/dp/0008557497Come to a RHLSTP live! - https://richardherring.com/rhlstp Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/rhlstp. Welcoming Dhivya O'Connor's, CEO of the Cherie Blair Foundation and host and founder of The Charity CEO Podcast Dhivya grew up in India but at the age of 18, Dhivya moved to the UK for her studies. Initially planning to return to India after completing her education, she found herself drawn to the opportunities that the UK offered. For a decade, Dhivya built a successful career in the private sector, holding various strategy, business development, and leadership roles at companies such as GE Capital, Lloyds Bank, and OctopusTravel (now part of Expedia Group). However, the call to make a more direct impact on society led Dhivya to transition into the charity sector. Over the past 24 years, she has held several senior leadership positions, including CEO roles at United World Schools, the Chartered Institute of Fundraising, and Children with Cancer UK. Her diverse experience, coupled with her innate drive to create equitable opportunities for women and girls, made her the perfect fit for her current role as CEO of the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women. Founded by Cherie Blair in 2008, the Foundation aims to empower women entrepreneurs in low-income countries through training, research, and ecosystem collaboration. Under Dhivya's leadership, the organisation continues to address the challenges faced by women entrepreneurs, particularly in accessing finance and education. The Foundation's work emphasises the importance of amplifying the voices of women entrepreneurs and creating opportunities for them to thrive. Dhivya's commitment to the charity sector extends beyond her day job. She serves as a Board Member of Book Aid International and is on the Steering Committee of Groundbreakers, a network promoting women leaders in the voluntary sector. She has also volunteered with NGOs in India, South Africa, and Cambodia, bringing her expertise and passion to various causes around the world. In August 2020, while on maternity leave with her second child, Dhivya launched "The Charity CEO Podcast." This chart-topping show, which now boasts over 20,000 listeners across 55 countries, aims to inspire, inform, and deliver practical insights on the challenges facing charity leaders today. Through candid and meaningful conversations, Dhivya delves deep into issues relevant to leaders across the sector and those who care about the important work of charities and non-profit organisations. Dhivya shares her diverse experiences in both the private and charity sectors, combined with her personal understanding of the challenges faced by women in developing countries. Dhivya's is uniquely positions her to lead the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women now and in the future.

“There is a problem! Business has a problem, the world has a problem, because we are just not utilising the talents, the ambitions, the drive of half the world's population (the female half)... Economic gender justice is essential both for women's freedom and equality, but also for the development of the world.” We are honoured to have on the podcast, Cherie Blair CBE KC! As the Founder of the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women, Cherie has been a relentless advocate for women's rights, particularly in low and middle-income countries. Our discussion delves into her vision for the Foundation, her journey as a leading barrister and King's Counsel in the male-dominated legal profession, and the gendered challenges women still confront today. Cherie is of course, the wife of the former UK Prime Minister, Tony Blair, and is an inspiration to women across the world. Recorded January 2024.
This episode features a fascinating conversation with Fiona Millar, a journalist and campaigner on education and parenting issues whose work I have admired for many years. Following a career in journalism, Fiona worked in the office of the Leader of the Opposition from 1995 to 1997, and as an adviser to Tony and Cherie Blair from 1995 to 2003. On leaving Downing Street, Fiona started writing a monthly column for The Guardian about education, and in 2004 she made a documentary film for Channel Four called The Best for My Child, examining how the quasi-market in schools was working in practice. In 2018, to mark the 30th anniversary of the Education Reform Act 1988, Fiona published a fascinating book with the same name as her earlier documentary - The Best for My Child: Did the schools market deliver? Of this book, Melissa Benn wrote: Fiona Millar combines a profound understanding of the way schools work on the ground with unrivalled political acumen. This insightful account of what the market revolution has really meant for England's education system is an important and absorbing read. I whole-heartedly agree. It's very well written and I think it's really required reading for anyone who wants to understand the weirdly hierarchical, disjointed school system that we have today - and therefore how we might create a more equitable system that works for all young people. It's also well worth reading back through Fiona's many excellent articles in the Guardian, including her most recent setting out how Labour can fix the education system - a topic on which we alight in this conversation. There's a link to her Guardian profile below and it's well worth an hour of your time. This is an episode of the Creativity Found podcast, featuring host Anna Stoecklein's interview. In it, she discusses her journey from nurse to podcaster, how she came up with the idea and created The Story of Woman, and what's next for the podcast! Creativity Found Original episode with transcript The Creative Brain is a catalyst for change. For many years Anna Stoecklein believed that creativity was limited to traditional forms of art, such as painting or drawing. However, after watching the Netflix documentary The Creative Brain, she realized that creativity is everywhere, and that everyone is creative in their own way. This realization was a game-changer for Anna, as it allowed her to see her own creativity and potential. Anna had a creative childhood, but that took a back seat during her teenage years and early adulthood. Anna studied nursing, and after three years of working in a clinical setting, she realized it wasn't for her. She couldn't see herself climbing the management ladder or going back to school to become a nurse practitioner. Other career roles followed, along with a move from the US to the UK. The lessons Anna had learnt from that documentary percolated, until a few years later she was able to put them to good use as she turned the idea for The Story of Woman podcast into a fully-fledged show. In this episode Anna and I discuss how she was able to challenge and reframe her self-perception as a "non-creative" person, as well as the amazing experiences she's had with her podcast guests, including conversations with Hillary Clinton and Cherie Blair. — Become a Patron for access to bonus content and to support the podcast, or buy me a (metaphorical) coffee Follow us: Instagram | Twitter | Facebook | Tik Tok | Youtube | LinkedIn Subscribe to our newsletter for a weekly dose of all things WOMAN We need more women's stories in the world! Revelations from nearly 12 million leaked confidential financial records have thrown light on the concealed wealth of powerful public figures around the world. Yasmine Mohammed is an ex-Muslim Canadian educator, human rights activist and author who is critical of Islam. Mohammed, who escaped a forced, abusive marriage to an Al-Qaeda operative, became an advocate for women's rights through her non-profit organization Free Hearts, Free Minds. She is a member of the Center for Inquiry Speaker's Bureau and on the board of advisory for the Brighter Brains Institute. Through her initiative Free Hearts, Free Minds she supports closeted ex-Muslims from Muslim-majority countries and co-ordinates an online campaign called #NoHijabDay against World Hijab Day. She also has a website. Mohammed has been interviewed by Sam Harris, Seth Andrews, and several news outlets from multiple countries, and in 2019 self-published the book Unveiled: How Western Liberals Empower Radical Islam. MUSICAL GUEST: SHANE THOMAS Shane Thomas is still in his early 20s, but his extraordinary story started when he was 3. He insisted he could play the piano at that age despite never having touched one in his short life, apart from a tendency to play an imaginary one on the carpet. Shane finally got his hands on a piano aged 7, sat down at the keys and immediately starting playing all sorts of recognisable tunes with both hands. Within weeks he was composing his own pieces. A month later he made his first public performance and was nominated for the national Talented Youngster of The Year Award. The top prize in the Music for Youth Awards then followed. By the time he was 9, despite not having had a piano lesson, he achieved Grade 8, having skipped Grades 1 to 7. He was playing all the classics, just about any contemporary pop song and was even arranging them in a classical style. Shane was asked to appear on The One Show where Jamie Cullum exclaimed ‘he's amazing!'. The Daily Telegraph hailed Shane as a ‘mini Mozart'. At 11 Shane became the youngest composer to be given his own publishing deal with a major publisher – EMI Music. This led to invitations for Shane to play in front of 10,000 people at Castle Howard, at a private dinner for the then Prime Minister's wife Cherie Blair and even being endorsed by royalty. And then everything stopped. Shane's mother had walked out of the family home never to be seen again (she is now in prison). This left Shane, his father Clayton and two little siblings to fend for themselves. Clayton, himself a former pro musician and teacher had to singlehandedly look after the family unit. Priority was given to Shane's education, leaving any potential musical career behind. Money was not just short, it was non-existent at times. Sometimes they were sat in the dark, without electricity. Suddenly with Shane now well into his teens, the media remembered him. The BBC set him the challenge of composing and performing a symphony for the BBC Northern Orchestra within 8 weeks and Shane completed it in half the time. He performed it in front of a disbelieving audience of several hundred and the BBC cameras. Shortly after this Channel 4 picked up on Shane's extraordinary story and produced a documentary called ‘Extraordinary Teens – Young Gifted and Broke'. So where are we now? Decca Records went on to release two singles in 2017 and his track ‘The Ruins' hit No.2 in the Classical iTunes chart. Bucks Music Group then signed him to a publishing contract in 2018 and have been building him as a composer/artist since then. 10 years on from his original publishing deal at EMI Music , he could now more accurately be grouped with the likes of Ludovico Einaudi, Nils Frahm and Hans Zimmer. What is extraordinary about Shane is that, as well as composing melodies that have such immediate ear-worms, he does so by evoking such strong emotional links and themes. His team have identified that Shane can become one of the most exciting and prolific new artists at a time when playlists are so in need of new composers of great original music.
Today we sit with Lady Val Corbett, a businesswoman who's dedicated her life's work to helping women help women. The essence, ethos and heartbeat of Lady Val's Professional Network is betterment; building the life and career you dreamed for yourself. It is the mission of all of Lady Val's endeavors: Lady Val's Professional Women's Network, The Corbett Network and The Robin Corbett Award. Lady Val is a devoted advocate for Prison reform and the rehabilitation and re-integration of returning citizens into society. All the profits from the Network's events, both digital and live, go into Lady Val's enterprises, they fundraise for work on prison reform which Lady Val understands is an investment in people who, released from prison, have served their time and need a chance to change their lives. Lady Val's Professional Women's Network lunches in central London, are attended by women who work, not ladies who lunch. Speakers have included Michael Palin, Cherie Blair, Gina Miller, Dame Stella Rimington, Jon Snow etc. This Network links like-minded businesswomen into a cohesive group for sharing contacts, experience, knowledge and to attract future business. This is a cold world and if women don't help other women, who would? The Network motto is: "There's a special place in hell for any woman who doesn't help another woman." The Robin Corbett Award funds £10,000 annually to three charities who do the most for prisoner reintegration. Unless ex-offenders are steered in the right direction after release, around 50% will re-offend within two years – that figure plummets to 19% when they have a job. Yet only 12% of firms employ people with criminal convictions who have served their time and need to change direction. This led to The Corbett Network, a coalition of over 90 decision-makers of charities, social enterprises and organizations involved in reintegration working together to persuade more firms to hire returning citizens. To celebrate our 50th episode, we're taking you down memory lane as we showcase some of the best bits with some of our favourite guests on The Hearing so far. Reminisce with Dame Fiona Woolf and Cherie Blair, who talk about the incredible women in the legal profession, as well as the ongoing challenges with gender inequality. Diversity and inclusion were the order of the day when Yasmin Sheikh joined us, while Brie Stevens-Hoare QC talked about a feeling of not belonging. Highlighting the diversity of discussion that we've had on The Hearing, World Bank Vice-President Sandie Okoro talked to Joe Raczynski about the benefits of working at an organisation that embraced multiculturalism, while former Blur drummer Dave Rowntree spoke about swapping the rockstar life for a career in criminal law. Criminal barrister Jonathan Goldberg QC regaled us with many a colourful tale about some of his more infamous clients. Alastair Campbell opened up about the Hutton Inquiry and his views on the government, while Ken Clarke talked to us about his posh accent and Cambridge education. We've got plenty more great guests—and some new ideas—to bring you. But for now, enjoy our celebratory 50th episode and, of course, stay safe! Find out more at tr.com/TheHearing
The first question Kevin posed when he sat down with our latest high-profile guest was: is it BLAIR or BOOTH? Yes, our latest interviewee on The Hearing is former 10 Downing Street resident, barrister, lecturer and writer, as well as the founder and chair of Omnia Strategy, Cherie Blair (Booth). Kevin heads across to leafy Marylebone to sit down with Cherie, where she shares anecdotes from her life and career. Highlights include: overcoming the gender imbalance at the Bar, setting aside ambitions of becoming a High Court judge when her husband became PM, and how she dragged herself to court just 10 days after a caesarean! During their chat, Cherie's love for the law shines through. Whether it's her continued international legal and advisory work, mentoring the next generation of lawyers, or discussing Lord Derry Irvine's love for Pugin wallpaper, she maintains the same level of enthusiasm as when she started 40 years ago. And with so many future plans and so much to do, there's no sign of her slowing down. Find out more at tr.com/TheHearing
Pinky Lilani, who was awarded a CBE in 2015 for services to women in business, is the founder of the annual Asian Women of Achievement Awards and the Women of the Future Awards. She also runs her own company, which uses Indian food as a means of team-building, and has published two cook books.Pinky was born in Calcutta, now Kolkata, where her parents were affluent and very sociable. They employed one of the best cooks in the city, so Pinky grew up surrounded by people and food. While she enjoyed eating, she had no experience of cooking. When she moved to London with her husband, who she married three weeks after their first meeting, she was unable to cook. After many culinary disasters, she returned to India and the kitchen in her family home, where the household cook shared his expertise. Back in the UK, she started teaching evening cookery classes which in turn led to a role consulting for one of Britain's best-known food companies, who manufacture Asian staples including chutneys, breads and curry pastes. In 2001, she published her first cookery book and set up in business to satisfy the two great loves of her life: food and people. In 1999, she founded the Asian Women of Achievement Awards and seven years later she added the Women of the Future Awards to her portfolio. Both of these have continued to be held annually, drawing high-profile support from, among others, Theresa May, Cherie Blair, the Duchess of York and the Countess of Wessex.Producer: Sarah Taylor.
