For a second entry: Share the podcast on Instagram and tag @drdanielle.nd The winner will be announced May! -------- In this episode, Dr. Danielle discusses the three important labs that women should ask their doctors for before starting metformin for PCOS. She emphasizes the importance of testing before starting medication to track progress and ensure the medication is necessary. The three labs she recommends are fasting insulin, fasting glucose, and hemoglobin A1C. She explains the significance of each lab and the optimal ranges for PCOS. Dr. Danielle also highlights the importance of working with a doctor who understands insulin and can interpret the test results. Takeaways Before starting metformin for PCOS, it is important to ask your doctor for three specific labs: fasting insulin, fasting glucose, and hemoglobin A1C. Fasting insulin levels should ideally be under 8 for consistent cycles and improved insulin resistance symptoms. Fasting glucose should be under 100 after fasting for 12 hours. Hemoglobin A1C should be under 5.7 to be in the normal range. Testing these labs before starting metformin helps track progress and ensures the medication is necessary. “A spiritual wound is a type of wound that disrupts your relationship with God or your spiritual practices." Dr. Allison Cook.    (https://www.dralisoncook.com/spiritual-wounds/#:~:text=A%20spiritual%20wound%20is%20a,God's%20word%20to%20cause%20harm) In ALSSI podcast Episode 113, I determined a spiritual wound that I have experienced personally and I believe we have collectively as conservative faith communities. Susan Hinkley and Cynthia Winward interview guest Kathryn Knight Sonntag author of The Mother Tree: Discovering the Love and Wisdom of Our Divine Mother.  In the preface, Kathryn shares “I believe asking questions and exploring possibilities are indispensable ways to show love and reverence for revealed truth.” I couldn't agree more. On page 13, she says “My experiences and study led me to see that we have a Mother wound in our theology.  This theological phenomenon is a collective wound that has affected our ability to perceive the need for the Mother as individuals.  Just as unexamined pain, be it feelings of unworthiness, abandonment or anger, can keep us from a clear perspective  of what's happening inside and outside of us, our unacknowledged wound caused by separation from our spiritual Mother likewise obscures our vision of ourselves and the divine." She continues, “The ramifications of what it means to be separated from our Mother are yet to be fully uncovered and understood.” This last statement really stood out to me.   I have discovered that for me in my journey, an extension of this “mother wound” is a gender wound and a gender role wound. By this I mean with a primary focus on a male diety we are inadvertently ignoring or devaluing feminine energy which is inhibiting our understanding of ourselves, and what it means to be divinely masculine, divinely feminine or a combination of the 2.  Up to this point, I have shared my thoughts on how it hurts all forms of gender expression and today, on gender roles.  -Meagan Skidmore ____________________________ The Beyond the Shadow of Doubt™ podcast is a proud member of the Dialogue Podcast Network found at DialogueJournal.com/podcasts. Mell Fraze grew up in a mixed faith household. Her mother was and still is a very active Scientologist and her father, born and raised Christian, explored various Christian faiths, and ultimately decided on being a Universalist. As an adult, Mell solidly settled into Universalist beliefs. Then she met her husband who was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Although he had no expectations of her joining the church, he asked if she'd be willing to at least listen. The exposure Mell had up to that point was from nuanced members who held a lot of space for other beliefs. She said, "so that combined with what the church says it's doctrine is, I was thinking, ok, maybe this is a church I can find a home in." She became an active endowed member of the church. Fast forward several years, Mell openly shares the challenges they faced when their child came out as transgender and nonbinary and also explains their decision to step away from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for the sake of their child's well-being. Our conversation highlights many of the challenges faced by transgender and non-binary individuals in a hetero-normative society. This is a space that is grossly misunderstood. I have found the best way to understand and to get to know somebody's story is to talk to them, to let them share their story rather than try to fill in the blanks. Listening to this interview will help you better love our transgender/nonbinary siblings, fellow children of God. She continues, “The ramifications of what it means to be separated from our Mother are yet to be fully uncovered and understood.” This last statement really stood out to me.   I have discovered that for me in my journey, an extension of this “mother wound” is a gender wound.  We have short changed ourselves and our appreciation for humanity in all its diversity by not allowing or at least encouraging deeper discussion and exploration about the divine feminine.  This hurts all ways of gender expression. I'm of the opinion that this great divide in our understanding of gender is one of the ramifications of what it means to be separated from our Mother that Kathryn mentions. -Meagan Skidmore Other BTSOD Episodes mentioned in this current one: There is room in my castle Parts 1 & 2, with Elizabeth Bingham Thomas, PhD candidate Episode 40 and Episode 41 Doubt is what helps us refine belief Parts 1 & 2, with Bro. "I think for a lot of us who... like kind of peeking behind the curtain to see and say . . . I have some questions, I want to know more about that. Then you start almost like pulling a thread of all these thoughts and ideas that you didn't even know you believed. And now you're willing to look at it and say, do I still believe this? This? --is that something that I want to continue to believe in?" "I realized some of the stories that I had believed about myself were not true. Growing up, I would hear 'oh, Amber is so athletic or Amber is such a peacemaker.' And I thought that was just true. This is why it's so dangerous is because there's other stories like those; it probably serves me being athletic, right? (I was an athlete). But there's other ones like 'I'm not creative,' that really hurt me in the beginning of my business because I was, 'well, I'm just not creative. I don't have good ideas.' Another one is ...'I'm not that interesting' and I just thought [it was true.] This is why it's dangerous." "I learned so much by being in the gray zone and asking questions about myself, about other people, about what love really means, that I wouldn't want to be certain again. I like the doubts because it makes me have a richer experience." These are just a few highlights of my interview with Amber Smith. I love how she likes to dive deep; she's a deep thinker like me and we had so much fun chatting. From Amber's website, itsambersmith.com: "I used to pray I could make money. I desperately wanted to learn how to make money and I thought if I prayed hard enough… God would answer my prayer by “granting” me money. God didn't answer my prayer with money. I was shown truth. There is only abundance. I was given mentors and teachers to help me see that there was already wealth available in my life. Money was only one form of wealth. And I could learn how to create it. I could also learn how to create peace. And meaningful, honest, empowering relationships. I didn't need to try to manipulate God into giving me what I wanted. I could become the person, in God's image, who can create— with my own free will and choice. And now I help my clients tap into this truth in their own life.  I help them become powerful creators... of whatever possibility they can imagine." Today I want to speak to this concept of each of us having “spiritual wounds.”  It has lingered with me ever since listening to episode 113 on ALSSI podcast in Dec, when Susan Hinkley and Cynthia Winward chat with Kathryn Knight Sonntag author of “The Mother Tree: Discovering the Love and Wisdom of Our Divine Mother.”  In the preface of “The Mother Tree: Discovering the Love and Wisdom of Our Divine Mother” Kathryn Knight Sonntag says “I believe asking questions and exploring possibilities are indispensable ways to show love and reverence for revealed truth.” I appreciate very much how KKS is leading by asking Qs and exploring possibilities.  So, I've been doing some of my own, reading and researching more on line and have added to the limited knowledge base and understanding that I have.  So I'm hopeful that what I have to share today is a clear & concise way of diving a little deeper into the topic of “spiritual wounds.”   ____________________________ The Beyond the Shadow of Doubt™ podcast is a proud member of the Dialogue Podcast Network found at DialogueJournal.com/podcasts. CW/TW: In this episode, there are discussions of child sexual abuse, an LDS disciplinary council and subsequent trauma as related to both.  There is also reference to suicidal ideation. Listener discretion is advised. Today author Emily Taylor joins me on the podcast. Raised LDS, Emily lives in the Dallas area with her husband and 2 sons. In our interview we talk about Emily's faith journey and how her experiences from a young age with sexual abuse eventually led to a crisis of faith. She was left questioning the role of church leadership and reflects on the impact that made.  Her journey included feelings of shame and ostracization due being misunderstood and unseen by her leaders. Through therapy and hard work, including a process of self-relection, healing, creating space for differentiation and nuance, Emily has come to find her place where to find her validation -- with God.  Her relationship is cemented with the Divine and she has been able to create a resource of tools for others to use, particularly aimed at youth. From her website: “Throughout my childhood, I lived through extensive, trauma-inducing experiences. Unable to process those events at that young age, I carefully tucked them away. I made sure nobody could ever see them. I even hid them and their impact from myself believing I was fine. It wasn't until much later that those experiences and associated feelings bubbled up to the surface. That was when I began the long journey of healing from my childhood trauma.  Slowly, with work and the mental tools I was learning, that hollowness inside me was replaced with Godly confidence.” (unlockingbrightminds.org.) I Shouldn't Have to Remind Them

Happy, Holy Mama

Sure my kids still have moments where they flat out ignore me. Yes, they don't necessarily ‘hop to' when mom asks them to get back to their school work.     Or pick up the living room. But the difference now is that it doesn't hurt my feelings, send me into a panic, or cause me to melt down when other people behave the way they want to. It no longer triggers bitterness or resentment. I no longer carry a grudge about having to remind my kids to do what I ask. I no longer make it a problem for me when other people, who have human brains, do human behaviors.  My choices produce my consequences. Their choices produce their consequences.  Accepting what IS helps me to stop arguing with (and losing to) reality.  Taking ownership and responsibility for what is mine is what allows me to release what isn't.  It helps me get curious about what might be going on beyond what I can see with my human eyes and aids me in seeing with my mother's expert, almost x-ray, vision. Through that lens to see God's fingerprints all over my kids, the mess, and the untouched school work. Tapping into unconditional love in those moments is what comes through in my voice to my children as I remind them to do what was asked. They don't hear irritation anymore. They don't hear anger. They don't hear shame. They hear their mom, who loves them deeply, connecting with them in a way no one else on earth can. They hear their mom who loves and respects them. Who has set firm boundaries, follow through with the consequences of those boundaries being broken. In today's episode of the Happy, Holy Mama Podcast I go deeper into three of the most common circumstances that I have found myself in, and also what I hear from my coaching clients all the time, that have historically caused us not to show up the way we want to. I also go into the four things you can do during those circumstances to come through them without bitterness, resentment, or creating a grudge with the people you love, without even realizing it.  You can also come take my free class Intro to Loving Your Homeschool Life to go deeper on some of the concepts I touched on today! You can also check out all the details for the Podcast Giveaway for free admissions to the Catholic Homeschool Conference this June 9-10th, 2023!  And if you discover that you have a built up store of resentment and bitterness that has become a grudge toward your kids, husband, extended family, God, or even yourself, then please reach out for a Consult Call to learn more about private coaching. I can show you where your particular grudges are truly coming from and how my work as a Catholic life coach can help you not only get unstuck from those unwanted emotions, but start to reverse their effects immediately when we work together. Book your free Consult call here!

5 Tips for the New Homeschool Mama

The advice I offer to new moms is not your typical advice. Yes, I have a TON of homeschooling and time management strategies to help make your life simpler and easier, but none of them will be useful without the best mindset on board as a solid foundation for the strategies. That's because homeschooling is 80% mindset and 20% strategy.  That's why in today's podcast episode of the Happy, Holy Mama Podcast I am sharing my five favorite Catholic homeschooling philosophies that, I believe, every new (and seasoned) homeschooler should try to embrace to make her own home and school experience so much more lifegiving and joy filled.  Regardless of where you are in your homeschooling journey, come listen to today's episode to rest deeply into some thoughts that maybe you've forgotten along your journey. And maybe even learn something new.  "As a new homeschool mom, I wanted an experienced homeschooler to just tell me what to do. Emily was this wise mentor and more, because she taught me skills that transfer to all areas of my life and relationships. Not only did she share her hard earned wisdom, but she taught me to tap into and trust my own wisdom and expertise." - Robin, Mom of 4 If you are brand new to homeschooling, or have discerned it for next year, WELCOME to the best club on this side of heaven!  Thank you for your YES, your FIAT, to this call from God to homeschool your children! Not everyone is called to homeschooling, but if you are, it is my mission to help you enjoy the journey! Listen to today's episode here! Happy Monday! With love, Emily P.S. Have you heard about my Podcast Giveaway for three free admissions to the Catholic Homeschool Conference?? Check out all the details for how to enter the drawing HERE.
