Shoot us a Text.Episode #1014: Today, we're covering President Trump's pause on reciprocal tariffs leaves auto imports still facing steep duties, while a record number of buyers turn to 84-month loans to afford today's rising prices.Show Notes with links:The auto industry is still squarely in the tariff crosshairs, even as President Trump backs off his broader reciprocal tariff plan. While a new 10% base tariff replaces most of the global duties, the 25% tariff on vehicles—and key materials like steel and aluminum—remains firmly in place.Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed auto, steel, and aluminum duties are sector-specific and still active.Despite ongoing auto tariffs, markets surged on the pause news—Tesla jumped 22.7%, GM rose 7.7%, and Ford gained 9.3%.Industry leaders are pushing for relief with MichAuto's Glenn Stevens Jr. advocating for protecting the international supply chain, calling the fragmentation “harmful” to competitiveness.President Trump said he would consider exempting specific companies from tariffs, saying “We're going to take a look at that.”More new-vehicle buyers are turning to 84-month loans than ever before, highlighting just how financially stretched today's car shoppers remain.According to Edmunds, 20% of Q1 new-vehicle loans were for 84 months, up from 16% in 2024 and 13% in 2019.The average amount financed also jumped to over $41K compared to $32K in Q1 2019.On the used side, 12% of loans ran 84 months, more than double the 5.3% seen in 2019, with an average of $28K financed.Dealer Michael Cummings of I-10 Toyota: “I really, really don't like going 84 months... it's not healthy for the customers in the long run. It's not healthy for us dealers in the long run.”A new report from Retail TouchPoints, citing Forrester's 2024 U.S. CX Index, reveals that customer service is at its worst level since 2016. Despite access to advanced tech, only 3% of brands are truly customer-focused — and shoppers are losing patience.70% of customers say it's hard to find in-store help; 83% of associates say their jobs are too complex.Shoppers prioritize speed over flair—19% say quick item location drives return visits.Brands like Tractor Supply and Dick's use “store mode” apps to show real-time inventory and item locations.GenAI is gaining traction: 84% of customer service managers plan to deploy AI agents in 2025, up from 42% in 2023.“With greater customer experiences comes greater responsibility,” says CI&T's Melissa Minkow.Join hosts Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Shoot us a Text. The auto industry breathed a sigh of relief yesterday as it was announced that they will be exempt from the 25% tariffs on Mexican and Canadian goods. Plus, we're looking at the cars that hold their value the best, and Google's push towards AI search.Show Notes with links:The auto industry is temporarily relieved by a one-month exemption from the 25% tariffs on vehicles covered by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). President Trump granted the reprieve following requests from Ford, GM, and Stellantis, with the ultimate goal of shifting production to the U.S.The automotive provisions of the USMCA require that 75% of a vehicle's components be made in North America (up from 62.5% under NAFTA) to qualify for zero tariffs, and mandate that 40-45% of auto parts be made by workers earning at least $16 per hour, aiming to boost North American production and labor standards. Most automotive manufacturers comply with USMCA standards and The American Automotive Policy Council and automakers expressed gratitude for the temporary exemption.Suppliers remain concerned about long-term impacts, despite positive signs for USMCA-compliant parts.Dealers and industry experts view the exemption as part of a broader strategy to encourage domestic manufacturing, but uncertainty persists.“The damage has already been done. For an industry that operates in three- to five-year product cycles, this level of day-to-day uncertainty is debilitating.” — Glenn Stevens, Executive Director of MichAuto.Last week we covered the cars with the most depreciation, and now, Kelley Blue Book has announced its annual Best Resale Value Awards, highlighting the top performers of 2025.The top 10 vehicles are projected to retain an average of 58% of their original MSRP, compared to the market average of 44.6%.Toyota dominates the list, securing four of the top ten spots, including the #1 2025 Toyota Tacoma with a projected 64.1% resale value. The full top 10 list includes the 2025 Toyota GR Supra (53.7%), 2025 Porsche 911 (53.8%), 2025 Toyota RAV4 (53.9%), 2025 Honda CR-V (54.4%), 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class (56.6%), 2025 Ford Bronco (57.0%), 2025 Toyota 4Runner (60.0%), 2025 Toyota Tundra (60.9%), 2025 Chevrolet Corvette (61.0%), and 2025 Toyota Tacoma (64.1%).Google is accelerating its AI integration into search with a new feature called AI Mode, adding a chatbot-like experience directly to the core of Google Search.AI Mode, currently in testing, is only available to Google One AI Premium subscribers and must be enabled in the Labs section of Search. The feature offers a search-centric chatbot experience, delivering AI-generated answers directly from Google's search index with supporting links throughout.AI Mode uses the Gemini 2.0 model, aiming to improve Google's ability to handle more advanced queries while providing real-time data and web interaction. While concerns remain about Google's shift away from traditional website linking, Stein asserts that AI Overviews anHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Chris Holman welcomes back Teri Sand, SHRM-CP, PHR, CBSP, CRP, Business Services Manager, Capital Area Michigan Works!, Lansing, MI, but serving Ingham Eaton, and Clinton Counties THEME: Job opportunities and challenges in transportation and auto manufacturing. Teri, welcome back, please discuss challenges in finding bus drivers, CATA hiring, and auto supplier demand in anticipation of MBN's September 12th Mobility & Talent panel featuring MICHauto? ● Many transportation companies in the Lansing region and beyond are seeking employees. ○ Companies are unable to keep up with the demand for truck drivers as they're unable to recruit, hire, and train fast enough. ■ Xavier Express and Willow Creek Farms Trucking have both been searching for Truck Drivers. ○ CATA (Capital Area Transportation Authority) has especially taken a hit to the bus driver, mechanic, and office worker shortages. ○ Dean Transportation recruiting for School Bus Drivers. ■ Teri, please discuss any recent trends you have been seeing in these industries along with how job seekers can find jobs with our Weekly Hot Jobs Report? ● Research supports that the auto manufacturing industry has fallen short of meeting demands. ○ According to Michigan State University supply chain faculty (No. 1 ranked supply chain department in the nation) the industry is struggling to keep up with demands due to the fact that the automotive industry operates on a just-in-time inventory management model. ■ Just-in-time inventory management model, How is that impacting this sector? Parts arrive hours or even minutes before they're put on the assembly line. Hence the name, parts arrive just-in-time to be used. ■ There are 30,000 parts in the average car. If you're missing one or a few of those parts, you can't build a car. ■ If you're not producing vehicles, which is what drives your revenue, you're eating into your profitability. Plus, you suddenly have inventory piling up that you don't have space for. ○ The problem with this model is that it has to function exactly as you designed it to. When these models start to break and fall apart, the repercussions are huge. (low supply, high demand) ○ Just-in-time inventory by its very nature also affects staff. Workers at the various automotive manufacturing suppliers must regularly adjust their schedules. The suppliers and their staff often get very little notice when a production is going to run late. That makes childcare, transportation, and basic work/life balance challenging. The UAW contracts, how does that fit into all this? ○ We won't know for a few months whether the UAW contract negotiations this Fall could impact any of this. Thanks, Teri, and thank you for getting our audience primed for the upcoming Speakers Series event ● Stay tuned for more information regarding MBN's September 12 Mobility Panel featuring MICHauto & MEDC, Time: 11:00 am to 1:30 pm ○ Location: Friendship Hall, Capital Region International Airport. » Visit MBN website: www.michiganbusinessnetwork.com/ » Subscribe to MBN's YouTube: www.youtube.com/channel/UCqNX… » Like MBN: www.facebook.com/mibiznetwork » Follow MBN: twitter.com/MIBizNetwork/ » MBN Instagram: www.instagram.com/mibiznetwork/

They cover what MICHauto has been up to during COVID-19 and next month's CAR Management Briefing Seminars. In that video above, Chris asks Glenn how COVID-19 has been for MICHauto, and it has actually been quite a ride, there was the abrupt shutdown, a pivot in the industry to contribute to manufacturing PPE, questions on what are safety protocols, recovery, and launch. Folks and companies are working smart and playing smart outside of our working environment. Chris remarked how members of his CEO Networks are experiencing the same things of how to contend, how transition, how coming out. MICHauto has along with the Detroit Chamber supported the Mask-up pledge connected with safety protocols. While a big event on the year is next month with CAR Management Briefing Seminars, before then MICHauto along with CAR will be hosting a webinar on July 30th to talk about the industry, auto manufacturing continues to have a ripple effect more information available at michauto.com. From their perspective the Michigan Mobility Initiative sees the state striving to be a global center, governor's appointment, Trevor in the new role, working through PlanetM it's a next step. Chris Holman talks with the newly appointed Chief Mobility Officer for the State of Michigan, Trevor Pawl. This interview covers Governor Whitmer's plans for this new position, the scope of the role as Chief Mobility Officer, and the current status of PlanetM. In the video above, Chris congratulates Trevor on the new position and new child. Trevor shares that Governor Whitmer wants a stronger MI economy, expand that, unify the efforts of the wide-ranging mobility under one common vision to compete globally, changing the way we move over the next 2-3 decades. Trevor emphasizes how mobility is wide-reaching, beyond auto, there are drones, autonomous logistics, trains, all intended to speed up the pace of the economy. In light of COVID-19, they are seeing supply chains becoming more regional, such as seen with PPE. While not a direct report this position is dotted-line to the governor, MEDC, as well as LEO, have ownership stakes along with MDOT and EGLE, a lot of great people across departments. PlanetM shifts in the new arrangement, as they will double-down on projects that worked, like assisting the elderly in the U.P., projects assisting in Detroit, and helping start-ups. Trevor sees them working with MICHauto, and other organizations across the state, however, mobility is shifting from basic robo-taxi efforts and mindset to the movement of goods, trucking, smart-infrastructure, what you can do with roads to help make longer time decisions, safer for the decade to come.

People’s preferences are changing. There very well may be a day in the not too distant future where a majority of people do not own their own cars. Younger generations seem to be more into the shared economy as opposed to having a love for the personally owned motor vehicle. And sometimes, even if they do love cars, they don’t have the financial resources that the previous generation did. To that end, you probably knew that Detroit is major center of the development of the automobile. But we’re now transitioning to developing more than just the traditional vehicle — to creating technology and solutions that helps people get around. That’s mobility. Today’s episode talks about that mobility industry in Metro Detroit. Not just Detroit, the Motor City… but Detroit, the Mobility City. There are numerous startups and the big players – including Ford and GM – that are serious about it and there’s a lot of money being spent. After all, that new Ford campus that’s happening in Corktown? That’s about developing this kind of technology right here in Detroit. That conversation, led by Sven Gustafson – is with Glenn Stevens. He’s the Executive Director of MICHauto. That’s an initiative of the Detroit Regional Chamber. And even though he’s the head of a group called MICHauto, you might be surprised that his answers to the challenges and opportunities Metro Detroit has is not just to add more cars to the road. Mobility and transit issues are also very real where we live. We touch on the challenges everyday people have around those issues in a city with areas with different needs and the way forward for a region that will never have something like a subway. Thanks for listening! If you like the show, don’t forget to subscribe free in Apple Podcasts or your favorite podcast app.
