The Beijing Auto Show is now the world's largest auto show — and its most important. It's where China's automakers show off their new innovations and newest models to a huge audience of domestic consumers and global influencers. As one attendee observed, there were more EV models in one room of the show than there are available for sale in the entire U.S. car market. So what was it like to be there in person? On today's episode of Shift Key, Rob talks with Kate Logan, the director of the China Climate Hub and Climate Diplomacy at the Asia Society Policy Institute; and Jeremy Wallace, the A. Doak Barnett Professor of China Studies at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.Jeremy and Kate attended this year's show and left with some strong impressions. They also chat with Rob about whether China has solved the EV charging problem, what tech was most impressive (and what was absent) from the expo, and how American policymakers should work with China's world-leading battery and EV manufacturing firms. Shift Key is hosted by Robinson Meyer, the founding executive editor of Heatmap News. You can find a full transcript of the episode here.Mentioned:WSJ: Chinese EVs can already be seen in the US… in El PasoThe new Carnegie Mellon report: An Industrial Strategy for Ranking Risk and Opportunity in Energy & AI Supply ChainsBloomberg on the Ford and CATL dealJeremy's recent work in Heatmap: China Can't Decide If It Wants to Be the World's First ‘Electrostate'--This episode of Shift Key is sponsored by ...Heatmap Pro brings all of our research, reporting, and insights down to the local level. Was ist da los?

The war in Iran and high oil prices are driving a surge in demand for China's electric vehicles abroad, with sales in March jumping more than 50% in countries such as Australia, Brazil and Germany. However, the domestic market paints a bleaker picture. Total domestic auto sales slumped 17% in the first quarter amid a brutal price war, subsidy pullbacks and a new 5% EV tax. Adding to the pressure, global giants like Volkswagen are fighting back with new, highly competitive models, leveraging a localized cost base to regain their footing in the world's largest auto market. Bloomberg Intelligence's Michael Dean, head of global autos research, and Joanna Chen, Asia autos analyst, join John Lee on the Asia Centric podcast fresh from their trip to the Beijing Auto Show. They unpack the sheer scale of the event, which featured 1,400 cars on display, highlighting the intense competition driven by advanced tech and aggressive pricing. The analysts also discuss how foreign automakers are learning toward exporting vehicles using "China speed" and explore the outlook for Europe's ultra-luxury brands such as Ferrari.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The result? A hyper-competitive market where price has become the ultimate differentiator.  But that's just one side of the story. The episode also explores:Why Chinese EVs are converging on identical feature sets (800V, ADAS, AI chassis)How foreign automakers (VW, Nissan, Audi) are attempting a comeback in ChinaWhy marketing costs and partnerships may determine survival for legacy OEMsAnd how China's EV ecosystem is shifting from price wars → brand differentiationThis is not just about China anymore — it's about who wins the global auto reset.

Shoot us a Text.Episode #1309: The market cools after a hot start to 2025, the New York Auto Show brings fresh product and EV momentum into focus, and NASA launches humans back toward the moon for the first time in over 50 years.March brought the new car market back down to earth, as high prices, rising gas costs, and more cautious buyers cooled Q1 sales after last year's unusually hot start.Q1 U.S. light-vehicle sales fell 4.3% YoY to 2.78 million units, with many major automakers posting declines.GM dropped 9.6%, with steep losses at Buick and Cadillac, while Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Subaru, Mazda, and BMW also lost ground.Hyundai and Kia were bright spots, both setting first-quarter records as hybrids surged.Stellantis kept its turnaround rolling with a 4.1% gain, helped by Jeep and a 20% jump at Ram, marking its third straight quarterly sales increase.Cox's Jeremy Robb summed up the mood: “Consumers haven't left the market, but they're getting more selective. Every new headline and cost increase makes them more cautious about pulling the trigger on a big-ticket item.”The New York Auto Show is back, bringing a mix of fresh, bold concepts, and future-looking EVs, giving dealers a glimpse at where product, design, and powertrains are heading next.Chrysler refreshed the Pacifica with a bold new look and trims, but notably dropped the plug-in hybrid, while still leaning on its Stow ‘n Go advantage.Kia and Subaru leaned into electrification, with the EV3 targeting ~320 miles of range and the Seltos adding a hybrid for the first time.Subaru's new all-electric, three-row “Getaway” SUV targets growing family demand for EV space and utility, with 300+ miles of range and arrival later this year.Hyundai's rugged Boulder Concept signals a move into true off-road competition, aiming squarely at Bronco and Wrangler territory. The show highlights the trend of more hybrids, more EVs, and more niche vehicles—all designed to give today's cautious buyer a reason to jump back in.NASA just launched humans back toward the moon for the first time in over 50 years, kicking off the Artemis II mission and signaling a major step toward putting astronauts back on the lunar surface. The mission kicked off with a powerful evening launch from Kennedy Space Center, marking the first time since 1972 that astronauts have blasted off on a mission bound for the moon. After launch, the crew will spend a full day testing the Orion spacecraft before committing to the multi-day trip around the moon. The mission won't land on the moon, but will loop around the far side—offering views no human has ever seen directly. This flight is a critical proving ground for future missions, including planned lunar landings and long-term moon operations later this decade.NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said: “This is the opening act… for missions that will send astronauJoin Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast  as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Shoppers don't just want specs—they want confidence. From the floor of the Houston Auto Show, we sit down with Team Gilman's Acura lead, Marla Cardenas, to dig into what turns casual browsing into informed decisions, and why a calm, pressure‑free venue helps families and first‑time buyers ask better questions. The Integra Type S brings the sport, the NSX brings the sparkle, and the new ADX shows why smaller SUVs are winning hearts with agility and everyday comfort. We walk through the Acura lineup's core personality: responsive handling without harshness, clean design with real utility, and tech that stays focused on safety and ease of use. You'll hear how women and men frame priorities differently—crash protection, child‑seat fit, and budget flexibility on one side; horsepower, hybrid timelines, and engineering details on the other—yet converge on the same outcome: how the car feels when it counts. We also unpack the value of certified pre‑owned inventory, sourced mainly from customer trade‑ins with known service histories, giving buyers a clear path between new and used without the gamble.Behind the scenes, the industry is shifting. With older vehicles on the road longer and a persistent technician shortage, dealerships are doubling down on mobile service, retention, and transparent support. That's where loyalty really forms—after the first test drive, when life gets busy and maintenance matters. If you're weighing Integra vs. ADX, RDX vs. MDX, or new vs. certified, this conversation delivers practical insight, show‑floor impressions, and the kind of straight talk that helps you choose well.If you enjoy candid car talk and real buyer tips, follow the show, share it with a friend, and leave a quick review so others can find us.
