In the final week of our summer series "Fertile Ground," we explored the parables of the Mustard Seed and the Noble Cedar from Luke 13 and Ezekiel 17. The sermon emphasized the transformative power of Jesus' teachings, which, when planted in fertile hearts, can make individuals and communities extraordinarily fruitful. We discussed how fruitful people and communities can significantly impact their surroundings, changing lives and transforming entire regions. The vision for our church is to become a "Noble Cedar" or "Mustard Tree" community, providing shade, rest, and a home for all, while also being a force for good in Chatham County. We are called to be agents of rising, spreading God's truth, beauty, and love wherever we go, and to engage in both spiritual and practical acts of service. As we move into the fall season, we are committed to investing more resources into our community, praying for disproportionate fruitfulness, and inviting everyone to join us in this mission.

New Hope Christian Chapel Podcast

What would it look like it if Jesus' parable of the mustard seed growing into the largest tree in the field came true for you and your life? And what exactly is the mustard tree supposed to represent? Why does Jesus love to speak in parables when He seemingly could just explain things more clearly? What is God saying to you through that parable today?!

Performed to a crowd of over 40 people at Chorlton Cum Hardy's Dulicmer, this recording is the live launch of 'Nobody left behind' a charity book for the Mustard Tree. The book is described as "A collection of poetry, prose and non-fiction inspired by the cost-of-living crisis. Edited by Amanda Nicholson, with writing by over 30 poets and authors from around the UK. This anthology was produced to raise awareness of the experiences you rarely see in the mainstream media. All the profits go to Mustard Tree to support the important work they do. Some of the pieces use dark humour to highlight the struggles people face, while others are more direct. They may not be easy to read, but perhaps they will inspire us all to do what little we can to help. Then, maybe we can make some small improvements to each other's lives instead of judging people." Now, more than ever, we find ourselves living through an age of forced displacement. It is estimated that there are roughly 70.8 million refugees worldwide. However, does society put enough effort into understanding and connecting with refugees to help them to feel a sense of belonging? In this episode, we speak with Congolese human rights activist and refugee Jenny Dakosta Van Mputu, the founder of No Impunity for the Congolese State. In 2006, Jenny was forced to leave his life in the Democratic Republic of the Congo behind when it became apparent that he was at risk of imprisonment and death for protesting against the abuses committed by the Congolese regime. While he gained safety from persecution, the threat of deportation loomed over Jenny, and 15 years of limbo resulted in homelessness and destitution until Jenny was finally granted leave to remain at the end of 2020. From a young age, Jenny has fought against injustice, and now stands adamantly for the protection of human rights in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Here at Manchester Museum, we believe that it is our duty to represent the stories and cultures of people from all backgrounds. It is vital that we celebrate the contribution of refugees in the UK and encourage people to connect with refugee communities found in Manchester and across Britain to facilitate a stronger relationship between all in our society. Mainstream social discourse frequently shapes the stories of refugees without offering them the chance to contribute to the conversation which so often surrounds them in the media. We believe it is our duty to build empathy and understanding towards refugees and asylum seekers throughout the world and recognise their resilience in rebuilding their lives. Jenny has been supported by the following organisations during his time in the UK: RAPAR, The Mustard Tree, Refugee Action, The Red Cross, The Gaskell Garden Project, Blue Shoes Productions, The University of Manchester. Season 2: Episode 3 Transcript ----- Manchester Museum is on a mission to become the most imaginative, caring and inclusive museum in the world, and in this podcast we will share open and honest conversations with special guests, which will inform, entertain and inspire. Through these conversations we hope to reframe what it means for museums to care, and explore how we can build understanding, empathy and love for our world and each other. The theological task is the work of the church that seeks to stand "between text and context." It asks how to we make the universal and timeless truth we find in the Biblical texts a reality in the midst of the particularities of our situation. It is a task that never ends, because the circumstances are always changing. Today, we look at the parable of the Mustard Seed and ask how we understand it, and then make it a reality for us.

In this teaching, we examine how the Parable of the Sower (vv. 8, 20) promises multiplication of the faithful, the Parable of the Growing Seed (vv. 26-29) demonstrates both deliverance and revelation, and the Parable of the Mustard Tree reveals the pattern of godly growth: holy service to others from the tiniest of beginnings to the most magnificent fruition. -Scripture Text: Mark 4:1-32 Sunday Feb. 17, 2019 Preacher: Senior Pastor Courtney Hall Sermon Series: The Fruit of the Spirit (Part 3) www.mypcf.org

Christian Questions Bible Podcast
Has the Gospel Been Corrupted? (Part II)

Christian Questions Bible Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 19, 2018

A few weeks ago we began talking about Jesus speaking the Parable of the Wheat and the Tares.  This was one of the few parables he actually interpreted for his followers, and in that interpretation he revealed it was a prophecy about the difficult future of Christianity.  He spoke of false Christians and an entire age when the true and false would grow together – outwardly indistinguishable from one another - until the "harvest" time. We traced some of the corrupting influences through the long history of the church and began to see how the Gospel was treated (and mistreated) along the way.  Jesus, after speaking the Wheat and the Tares Parable, spoke two other parables.  We believe they further described corrupted Christianity.  So, what do these other parables tell us?  Are we in danger of being deceived?  Is the gospel even intact here and now in our present world? We can begin to get to the core of the issue by saying that although the Gospel itself has always remained intact and pure (though often hidden) the generally-accepted present representations of that Gospel are severely compromised.  The fact that this compromise was spelled out in Scripture, specifically by Jesus himself in the three parables of Matthew 13, (the Wheat and Tares, the Mustard Tree and the Leavened Flour) makes it all the more dramatic - and in some ways all the more surprising. If we were to objectively look (and I know that being objective can at times be really difficult) at the way churches operate now and compare that to the way the “church” operated in New Testament times we would actually be horrified. Yup, I said horrified. Corrupted Christianity. Let me voice one major difference that has caused me to be personally disturbed.  Many churches and denominations of Christianity have made their church building and its contents into what I believe the Scriptures label as idols.  Before going further, let me say that I have no problem with having a place to meet together to study, learn about and apply biblical Christian principles.   My issue is making the building and its images, paintings and windows objects of worship. And don’t get me started on even having statues as part of all this! There is zero indication in Scripture that Christians should elevate “things” to such a level.  There is massive indication in Scripture that idolatry in any form at any time and in any place is abhorrent to God.  Because we live 2,000 years after Jesus walked this earth, our present brand of Christianity has over that time adopted pagan thinking and ritual, and most of us have no clue it even happened! Check out our February 19, 2018 podcast, “Has the Gospel Been Corrupted?” Part 2 and see for yourself as we walk through Jesus’ own description of the corruptions that would plant themselves within Christianity.  Follow along as we attempt to be objective (again, that can be a hard thing to do) and list out many of the stark differences between 21st century Christianity and 1st century Christianity.  This information may very well change how you view your own Christian faith! Click here for Part I of "Has the Gospel Been Corrupted"?
