Latest up from Spoken Label (Author / Artist / Poetry Podcast) features the amazing Peter Topping. Peter is a local artist in the Chorlton Area and has worked on several books with historian Andrew Simpson. He has also written his own book entitled “Smile Dammit Smile!!! – Chorlton”. He has created many “History Walls” and art installations around Chorlton together with Manchester historian Andrew Simpson. Together with Andrew he has created 14 books on the history of Chorlton and Manchester He was The Chorlton Arts Festival Director for 4 years. At the present, he is working as Virtual Arts Festival Director for Chorlton Arts and also is putting together artwork by local artists to be displayed on hoardings around Chorlton-cum-Hardy. In 2023, at the age of 74, he started collating the poems he had already written and started to write new poems reflecting on his life so far. He then worked on a project with Lindy Newns, which came about while he was working on The Virtual Chorlton Arts Festival for 2024. Peter was curating the Literary Arts section and was creating the exhibition panel that carried Lindy's entry. As he read the poem, he began to think that perhaps he could enliven the panel by painting a picture of the scene. He then decided that it would be fun to have a collection of Lindy's poems illustrated in the same way, mixing the two arts together, literary and visual, in what would be an exciting book to read, and to view. The rest is revealed in this feature length podcast More about Peter can be found at: https://pubbooks.co.uk/ #poetrypodcast #art #artpodcast #poetry #chorlton The video for this is here - https://youtu.be/mAELVAmq0fo

Let us know what you think of the latest episode of Distinct Nostalgia by clicking here and sending us a messageWe're sad to hear the news that Brian Trueman has died at the aged of 92. Brian provided the soundtrack to so many characters of our childhoods, whether as a writer or actor. His work with Cosgrove Hall Films included Chorlton and the Wheelies, Dangermouse, Cockleshell Bay and Jamie and the Magic Torch. But he had a career before helping to bring to life these animation classics - in acting, in journalism too. Here in an interview recorded in 2016, we hear Brian being interviewed for a special radio doc by Made in Manchester (Distinct Nostalgia's producers) which was never aired. We've only found half of it and will put the second part as soon as we find it. In the meantime enjoy over an hour with one of the real greats of Television. Distinct Nostalgia presenter Ashley Byrne says: 'Brian memorably once said to me in a Granada TV programme we made 'you should never patronise kids. Treat them like little adults and throw the smarties high.' That comes over in all of his animation work. RIP Brian. You were a genuine legend for millions of us. Researched by Andrew Edwards. Produced by Ashley Byrne. A Made in Manchester Production And don't forget we need your support. Distinct Nostalgia has no budget. Latest up from Spoken Label (Spoken Word / Poetry / Artist Podcast) features the wonderful Amy Langley. Amy has been writing poetry since she was 5 years old; her first experience of writing poetry was when she stayed at her grandparents, who lived in Wiltshire, in the summer holidays; she used to have a little book next to her bed; she would hear the birds singing and be inspired to write. Amy continued my writing throughout her childhood and recalls writing a poetry book and gifting it to one of her favourite primary school teachers. Amy used to perform on Manchester's open mic night scene when she was 18, a lot of it was freestyling however there was some pre-written material. There was a little hiatus from performing but the stage soon came back to being a spotlight in Amy's heart in 2017 when she began performing at The Wonder Inn in Manchester City centre. Then followed The Old Abbey Tap House in Hulme to further expanding to Dulcimer in Chorlton, Mind Over Matter in Camden, BYOB at Box Park in Wembley, Mind Over Matter in Ancoats, Pull Up Bar in Ancoats and has spoken at Sale Write Out Loud a few times. One thing Amy is sure of; her love of writing and performing poetry; expressing herself through word allows her to set free thoughts, feelings & share experiences that can benefit those that take the time to listen. Performed to a crowd of over 40 people at Chorlton Cum Hardy's Dulicmer, this recording is the live launch of 'Nobody left behind' a charity book for the Mustard Tree. The book is described as "A collection of poetry, prose and non-fiction inspired by the cost-of-living crisis. Edited by Amanda Nicholson, with writing by over 30 poets and authors from around the UK. This anthology was produced to raise awareness of the experiences you rarely see in the mainstream media. All the profits go to Mustard Tree to support the important work they do. Some of the pieces use dark humour to highlight the struggles people face, while others are more direct. They may not be easy to read, but perhaps they will inspire us all to do what little we can to help. Then, maybe we can make some small improvements to each other's lives instead of judging people." The book can be bought on Amazon at: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Nobody-Left-Behind-Printed-Anthology-ebook/dp/B0BNK23NR9 Hosted and ran by Steve Smythe and Andy N, the night featured readings by the following readers in the book: 1st Half: 1) Amanda Nicholson 2) Scott Fellows 3) Steven Wailing (who read out a poem by John G Hall also) 4) Lucy Power 5) Phillip Burton 6) Linda Downs 7) Rosemary Moore 2nd Half: 1) Andy N 2) Michael Burton 3) April Manderson 4) Nigel Austell (who read out a poem also by Dorinda MacDowell) 5) Phillip Carter 6) Gordon Zola (who read out a poem also by Eve Nortley)

What factors influence the walking speed of an occupant? Is it just their physiology and crowd density? It seems it is more complicated than that (as most things are in fire science...). Dr John Gales of York University takes me on a journey through their extremally interesting research on anthropomorphic data and movement speeds, which they have been extensively carrying through the last years. You will learn why the crowd at a football match will have a different characteristic than one attending American football (handegg?). Why evacuation is quicker in torrential rain than in fire, and how stimuli may drive the walking speeds as well. And how a beer tent helped uncover that!John has mentioned a lot of resources that may be of interest. The online course mentioned by John is available at: https://uwaterloo.ca/fire-research-and-safety/fire-safety-program and a course outline may be found here.Learn more about the York Fire Engineering group at https://yorkufire.com/The  SFPE Foundation report cited in the episode can be found here.A list of relevant papers is available below: Chin, K., Young, T., Chorlton, B., Aucoin, D., and Gales, J., (2022) Crowd Behaviour in Canadian Football Stadia - Part 1 - Data Collection. MEN MATTER TOOAll too often men feel overlooked or invisible when it comes to talking about fertility issues. It's not your average conversation for the pub, we know! But with infertility being a 50/50 issue between men and women and sperm count being on the decline across the world, we want to help the conversation along, so the brilliant group of ladies I'm involved with aka 'Talk Fertility' which is all about making fertility information accessible brought together some top-notch men's fertility experts to offer top tips, to help both men and women understand what can be done to improve their sperm health and ultimately their fertility. We discussed: - Getting your head around what lifestyle and environmental factors can affect your fertility eg. diet, smoking and drinking, protein shakes, toxins, oxidative stress - Be clear on what tests you can do at home, or via your GP, or the ones you can pay for at a fertility clinic to understand more about your sperm - How to field the questions if you're being asked about having children, how it feels to be a man and not be able to have children - Understand the signs and symptoms of testicular cancer, encouraging males to visit their GP if they detect any of the signs or symptoms.
