John Novicoff was born in 1931 in East Los Angeles and lived in Savannah since 1972, John's life is a long and winding journey of ups and downs, successes and failures. Yet God faithfully used him John as His servant despite John's own weakness and struggles. John's testimony demonstrates God's steady providence and long-suffering patience. It shows us how grace is not a one time event, but is something that we require again and again. It shows how God can use our failings and circumstances for his purposes. John testifies to a God that is with us in times of great suffering. John's testimony shows how amendment of life can some slowly but surely as God does his slow and steady work in us. This interview is split into two podcasts. This first podcast takes us from John's childhood in a turbulent family and Russian upbringing in Depression era East LA's all the way through John's call to ministry and military service spanning the wrap up of the 2nd Word War through the wars in Korea and Vietnam. The second podcast episode will focus on John's half century of ministry and counseling in Savannah as well as his involvement in international mission work, alcoholics anonymous and his wife's brave and clear-eyed battle with a debilitating illness. In 1939, South Africa entered World War II on the side of the Allied powers, although not without internal opposition. The German government capitalised on these domestic rifts and secretly engaged the leaders of the pro-fascist Ossewabrandwag in order to encourage sedition across South Africa and intercept naval intelligence- ultimately to undermine the strategic importance of the Cape of Good Hope for Allied efforts. To this end, a complex network of spies was dispatched to collect intelligence to send back to the Reich by way of coded messages to Axis diplomatic agents stationed in Mozambique. These spies and their tactics are the focus of Dr Evert Kleynhans' new book, Hitler's South African Spies (Jonathan Ball Publishers, 2021). In this podcast, Dr Kleynhans and Dr Marco Wyss, Director of the Centre for War and Diplomacy, discuss the role of intelligence in South Africa during the Second World War, the impact these spies had on the outcome of the war, and how research into this field continues to develop. Dr Evert Kleynhans is a senior lecturer in the Department of Military History at the Faculty of Military Science of Stellenbosch University. He lectures undergraduate and postgraduate modules on the evolution of warfare, African military history, and low-intensity conflict in Africa since 1945. His research interests include South African participation in both World Wars, insurgency and counterinsurgency in Africa, and the broad historical impact of climate and terrain on warfare. Dr Kleynhans formerly served as an officer in the South African National Defence Force, whereafter he was appointed as the archivist, and later director, of the Records, Archives and Museums Division of North-West University in Potchefstroom, South Africa. His book, Hitler's South African Spies: Secret Agents and the Intelligence War in South Africa, was published by Jonathan Ball Publishers this year and is available through reputable booksellers.

S. Forester, Tom Hanks stars as Navy Cmdr. Ernest Krause, Captain of the U.S.S. Destroyer Keeling, codenamed Greyhound. Krause also commands two other Destroyers providing protection for 37 cargo and troop transport ships crossing the Atlantic during World War II. The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest continually contested battle in the second Word War. In this episode I speak with Trevor Steele who is the leader of the Adelaide chapter of the Circle of Friends of Bruno Göring. It is Bruno Göring we mainly talk about, although Trevor’s brief back story is also interesting. Bruno was a German spiritual healer who was most prominent in his practice after Word War 2 from 1949 through the 1950s when he attended what must have been hundreds of thousands of chronically ill, traumatised and wounded people. Trevor says the large grounds where Bruno saw the majority of the people became known as the field of misery, a really powerful image when you imagine 20,000 or 30,000 suffering people gathered together awaiting healing from all manner of afflictions, including paralysis, blindness and crippling pains. By all accounts Bruno not only had an abundance of love for all the people in need but actually healed many thousands from conditions considered untreatable. It is a remarkable story that I would have had a lot of trouble believing if I hadn’t watched the documentary about him that you can find on YouTube. Trevor is an excellent person to narrate this story, himself having started and then stopped a catholic ministry, moving into atheism, before experiencing his own spiritual healing. The issue of spiritual healing raises many scientific, ethical and spiritual questions and I hope this account will inspire you to ponder these as it did for me.
