THE BURNING HEART OF THE WORLD, now available from Red Hen Press! Bookshop | Barnes & Noble | Amazon Nancy Kricorian's The Burning Heart of the World tells the story of a Beirut Armenian family before, during, and after the Lebanese Civil War. Returning to the fabular tone of Zabelle, her popular first novel, Kricorian conjures up the lost worlds and intergenerational traumas that haunt a family in permanent exile. Leavened with humor and imbued with the timelessness of a folktale, The Burning Heart of the World is a sweeping saga that takes readers on an epic journey from the mountains of Cilicia to contemporary New York City. > Like colorful miniatures–from a childhood of elders haunted by the Armenian genocide, to girlhood and adolescence amidst war in Beirut, to marriage and children in New York at the time of 9/11—Nancy Kricorian finds just the right scale to bring her heroine's passage to vivid, reverberating life. > — Aram Saroyan > An arrestingly beautiful novel of how families draw us together, but also push us apart. Set amidst the backdrop of displacement and war, The Burning Heart of the World illuminates how we carry history deep into even the most forgotten corners of ourselves. Once you start reading about Vera and her family you won't be able to put this book down. > — Marie Myung-Ok Lee, Author of The Evening Hero Thanks for this amazing conversation, Nancy! Specifically, we will learn that in the Bible and the New Testament, the English terms "LEAVEN" and "LEAVENED" are derived from two different Hebrew words conveying two distinct concepts. Oftentimes, it is taught that leaven is likened to SIN and PRIDE. But is it linked to these ideas? Join us today to learn about the Biblical and Hebraic concepts of LEAVEN, LEAVENED, UNLEAVENED, and TO BE LEAVENED. This is episode 174 of Real Israel Talk Radio, beginning our 6th season! Sourdough's global journey has seen it become a beloved addition to diets and café menus worldwide, renowned for its delicious flavour and health benefits. We explore what makes sourdough unique—its natural leavening process using a fermented mixture of flour and water known as a 'starter'. This natural fermentation process, free from commercial yeast and additives, is what sets sourdough apart as a healthier alternative to supermarket bread. We also break down the basic ingredients required for making sourdough: high-protein bread flour, water, salt, and of course, the all-important sourdough starter. Maintaining a starter is akin to nurturing a living organism, filled with millions of wild yeast and bacteria that give sourdough its characteristic tang. We touch on the essential tips for caring for your starter, troubleshooting common issues, and the various factors that affect the success of your loaf, from humidity and temperature to the recipe and hydration levels.
…& Trading a Wooden Yoke for an Iron Yoke. Today's message started to formulate about the 7th day of unleavened bread this past week. First I'm going to outline the progression of this message, then I will expound on all of these points. 1) The Shavuot wave offering of two leavened loaves of bread could represent the 2 houses of Israel, YHWH's two sons as a wheat harvest firstfruits offering. 2) YHWH says Israel and Ephraim are His first born sons in Ex 4:22 and Jer 31:9, hence they/we are also a first born firstfruits offering that He has redeemed with the Blood of His Passover Lamb. 3) Backing up from Jer 31:9 for context I started reading in Jer 27 about Hannaniah's false prophecy of deliverance from the wooden yoke of Babylon. To which Jeremiah calls him a false prophet leading people who listen to him into a false sense of deliverance and causing them to fight against the judgement of the wooden yoke of Babylon which is actually judgement from Yah for their wickedness. Through Jeremiah YHWH tells them that the broken wooden yoke of Babylon would be replaced with an iron yoke! So we came full circle from our thief in the night admonition about the false prophets of the take back America Christian Nationalist movement to what we believe is truly a message for us today which was delivered by Jeremiah thousands of years ago. All the scriptures for this message came together just a day or two BEFORE the free speech quashing bill HR 6090 passed from the House of Representatives to the Senate and BEFORE WE WERE EVEN AWARE OF THIS PROPOSED BILL! The conservative take back America, maga, Zionist, Christian Nationalist, secure our border, conservative movement in the US which appears to be trying to remove the yoke of tyranny and corruption, may actually be succeeding in breaking the wooden yoke of Babylon only to have it replaced with a soon to come iron yoke!!!

Shabbat Metzora-Hagadol 2024: Beware of Leavened Bread by Rabbi Aaron Flanzraich
Our Intergenerational Divergence series is sponsored by our friends Sarala and Danny Turkel. In this special episode of the 18Forty Podcast, we talk to Rachel Goldberg-Polin—whose son, Hersh, was kidnapped by Hamas and is still held hostage in Gaza—about heading into Passover with our loved ones still captive.Normally, Intergenerational Divergence feels like something of a choice. But now, Jewish families have been split apart by force. In this episode we discuss:How do we foster a continued connection to the members of our family who are missing? What difficult thoughts and questions will we bring to the Seder table this year? What does it mean to express hope via the Pesach Seder amid these bitter times? We hope wholeheartedly that this conversation about missing our children at the time of Passover will be made irrelevant and the hostages will soon return home. Interview begins at 7:17.References:“One Tiny Seed” by Rachel Goldberg-Polin“To the Boys in the Room” by Rachel Goldberg-PolinSefer HaMenucha on Mishneh Torah, Leavened and Unleavened Bread 8:2“A Prayer for Israel To Add to Your Pesach Seder” by Yosef Zvi Rimon

Choir season is quickly approaching. We know that you're planning which choir anthems to use, the rehearsal schedule and the plans for each rehearsal, but in this episode, we encourage you to pause and think about the needs of a choir a little bit differently this fall. Today's guest is Steven C. Warner. Steven Warner is the founder of the Notre Dame Folk Choir and, until recently, worked for the Notre Dame Newman Center for Faith and Reason in Dublin, Ireland. One of Steve's many gifts lies in his ability to foster true inclusion and listening in his ensembles. Today we focus on the special qualities that elevate ensembleship within a choir, most of which are not actually music.

Metabolism 1878 in the physiology sense of "the sum of the chemical changes within the body by which the protoplasm is renewed, changed, or prepared for excretion," from Greek metabole "a change," from metaballein "to change," from meta "change" + ballein "to throw". Chemical from chemic "of alchemy" (a worn-down derivative of Medieval Latin alchimicus) + -al (of or pertaining to). Catabolic 1876, katabolism, "destructive metabolism," from Greek from kata "down" + ballein "to throw". Anabolic "pertaining to the process of building up" (especially in metabolism), 1876, with -ic + Greek from ana "up, upward" + ballein "to throw." Reactant 1640s, "to exert, as a thing acted upon, an opposite action upon the agent," from re- "back" + “act” from Latin actus, past participle of agere "to set in motion, drive, drive forward," hence "to do, perform," Product early 15c., "mathematical quantity obtained by multiplication," from Medieval Latin productum, in classical Latin "something produced," noun use of neuter past participle of producere "bring forth" Endothermic Endo- word-forming element meaning "inside, within, internal," from Greek endon "in, within." from Greek therme "heat, feverish heat." Exothermic from Greek exō (adv.) "outside," related to ex (prep.) "out of" from Greek therme "heat, feverish heat." Enzyme from Modern Greek enzymos "leavened," from en "in/within" + zymē "leaven" En+zyme = “Leavened within/in” Hence, where we get leavened bread: substance, typically yeast, that is used in dough to make it rise. Catalyst 1650s, "dissolution," from Latinized form of Greek katalysis "dissolution, a dissolving" from kata "down" (or "completely"), + lyein "to loosen" Denaturation from Latin de "down, down from, from, off; concerning" (see de), also used as a prefix in Latin, usually meaning "down, off, away, from among, down from," (defenestration; the action of throwing someone out of a window.) Fenestra (latin noun); window from Latin natura "course of things; natural character, constitution, quality; the universe," literally "birth," from natus "born," past participle of nasci "to be born," Consumer from Latin consumere "to use up, eat, waste," from assimilated form of com-, here perhaps an intensive prefix + sumere "to take," from sub- "under" + emere "to buy, take" Carnivore from Latin carnivorus "flesh-eating" Omnivore formed from omnivorous on model of carnivore/carnivorous. French omnivore was noted as a neologism in that language in 1801 and might be the direct source of the English word. We've been talking over the past several sessions about the creative use of the tongue. We said in our previous broadcasts, that words are spiritual. Proverbs 18:21 says life and death are in the power of the tongue and those who engage will eat the fruits thereof, the tongue produces fruit now, you can't have fruit without seed, so the seed that the tongue releases to produce that fruit are work Words. Notice that that scripture Proverbs 18:21 says, life and death are in the power of the tongue. In other words, your words can bring forth life to people or circumstances or your words can bring forth death. There are two laws operational in the kingdom of God. One is called the law of sin and death and the other is called the law of the spirit of Life In Christ, which is the law of Grace.Listen for more...Scripture referenced:Proverbs 18:21, 23:7 Job 3:25Numbers 23:19Genesis 1:12, 8:22John 8:26, 6:63Luke 21:25-26 1 Corinthians 5:72 Corinthians 4:14Romans chap 7 & 9For more Free books, Sunday teachings and bible studies, please visit us at: https://www.walkinginpower.orgDr. Bern Zumpano is a Pastor and Teacher of the Word of God who has authored several books on Spirit-filled living through relationship with Jesus Christ and walking in the Power of the Holy Spirit. Sermon Title- -You shall not eat leavened bread---Text- Exodus 12 vs 14-39--1. Israel in Egypt was God preaching salvation through Christ.---2. He gave us the problem that Israel was under-which was slavery.--3. But God's interest was slavery to sin and there is no slavery to sin without Law.---4. So, all men and women apart from Christ are slavery to sin, that is, they are under the power, dominion and condemnation of it.---5. And to get out this situation requires the God given solution-which is the death of the Passover Lamb.--6. But there is more to the Passover Lamb. He was the first born of God, and also was pictured in the Unleavened bread.---7. Unleavened bread was bread made without yeast and that is without any influence of sin and that speaking to the sinlessness of Christ.---8. And by this God established the condition for the salvation of His people. That it was only to happen by the death of the First Born of God who was without leaven. ---9. And God sees ONLY this blood as the basis of a sinner's passing from death unto life.---10. AND IT IS FREE

Once again we will come face to face with totally amazing things in the historical context of Passover; we will gain deeper and enhanced perspectives on the Jewish Passover and the Passover of the Lamb of God. In lesson 34 we will ask ourselves the question of why unleavened bread. What's with that? It has everything to do with Egypt, everyday life in Egypt, and the Hebrews who had assimilated into this pagan culture. We recall Deut. 32:15-17 … “But Jeshurun (a Hebrew word "upright" used to represent Israel) grew fat and kicked-- you are grown fat, thick, and sleek-- Then he forsook God who made him, and scorned the Rock of his salvation. They made Him jealous with strange gods; with abominations they provoked Him to anger. They sacrificed to demons who were not God, to gods whom they have not known, new gods who came lately, whom your fathers did not dread.” (Deu 32:15-17) Moses is teaching us what the Lord, YHVH, gave him. The Hebrews turned on the Lord became part of the Egyptian culture, values, and worldview. They ate the “leavened bread” of Egypt and Egypt's gods. In this lesson you will come to understand that it makes sense to associate LEAVENED bread with Egypt and UNLEAVENED bread with the Lord. You will understand new things to give a deeper insight into Jesus' Last Supper as well; His last Passover meal that I call the Passover Meal of the Messiah. In this podcast I again mentioned an earlier powerful and important lesson. It has to do with the Biblical “proof” if you will that the Hebrews assimilated into the Egyptian culture. It is so important that we grasp this historical fact since it is so related to the rest of the book of Exodus and, the entire Torah. Here's the link to that podcast - https://www.podbean.com/ew/pb-wdzur-f82194 Also, we will study the Hebrew word פֶּסַח PEH SACK H6453 and another Hebrew word that is very close, פָּסַח PAH SACK H6452. Once we understand these two Hebrew words we will understand in a more powerful way the phrases in Exod. 12:11 where it says “the Lord's Passover” and in 1 Cor. 5:7 “Christ our Passover.” And we thought we had it. We thought we understood. Far from it. Rev. Ferret - who is this guy? What's his background? Why should I listen to him? Check his background at this link - click here for the teacher's background
Jesus commanded his disciples to take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod. But what is this leaven, and how can one know they have been infected by it- Here are 5 signs that you have been infected by this leaven, and what you must do about it.
Mill Song Bakery bakes naturally leavened breads stone-milled on site with local grains from the Chesapeake Bay watershed. 80% of their grains come from Rockingham County, right where they bake their delicious bread. Stone-milled, naturally leavened bread was once a specially curated art that was passed down over generations and regionally adapted to the conditions of a certain place. People would quite literally wear their sourdough culture around their necks in jewelry in some places to protect their cultural inheritance of a staple food that was co-adapted to your people's microbiome. Now, for bakeries, it is often considered a more labor-intensive alternative to baking with commercial yeasts and roller-milled flours. The problem with this is the commercial milling process separates out some of the most nutritious components-the wheat germ oil, for example-from the flour; and leavening the bread with commercial yeast speeds up the baking process, eliminating the fermentation element that makes the grain more digestible and probiotic. The Torah commands in Parashat Vayikra (2:11), “Kol Se'or Ve'chol Debash Lo Taktiru Mimenu Isheh l'Hashem” – “you shall not offer as a fire-offering to G-d any leaven or honey.” This verse establishes a prohibition against offering on the altar any leavened product, or any sweet product. “Debash” (“honey”) in the Torah normally refers specifically to the juice extracted from dates, but in this context, it includes any sweet food item. All sweet products may not be offered on the altar. This prohibition forbids not only directly placing sweet products on the altar, but also including sweeteners among the ingredients of the Ketoret (incense). The Sefer Ha'hinuch offers several different approaches to explain the reasoning behind this command. First, he suggests that Hametz symbolizes laziness. Dough rises and ferments when it sits for a period of time without being handled, and thus Hametz is the result of inactivity. By banning Hametz from the altar, the Torah expresses to us the importance of zeal, energy and alacrity in the service of G-d. For this reason, the Sefer Ha'hinuch explains, the Torah allows Hametz to be brought as a public offering: on Shabuot, a special sacrifice called the “Korban Sheteh Ha'lehem” was offered, which consisted of two loaves of leavened bread. When it comes to a communal project, people feed off each other's energy, and so there is no need to warn about the dangers of laziness. This warning is needed only in the private, personal realm, and so leaven is not allowed in the framework of individual sacrifices. The Sefer Ha'hinuch notes that the Lehem Ha'panim – the showbread which was placed on the Shulhan (table) in the Bet Ha'mikdash – was a public offering which was nevertheless baked unleavened. He explains that since the Lehem Ha'panim was constantly on the Shulhan, it was made unleavened in order to reinforce the lesson of the dangers of laziness. As for the prohibition against offering sweet products, the Sefer Ha'hinuch explains that this conveys the message that we should strive to limit our consumption of sweet food products. Of course, we need to eat in order to survive, but we must do just that – eat so we can live, as opposed to living so we can eat. We are to avoid gluttony and overindulgence, and exercise moderation in our enjoyment of food, and so the Torah forbade offering sweet food products on the altar, as a symbol of the need to curb our lust for tasty food. Secondly, the Sefer Ha'hinuch writes, leavened and sweet products both represent arrogance. Dough rises when it ferments, and honey naturally forms bubbles that rise above the surface. The Torah therefore forbade offering these products on the altar to express the need to eliminate arrogance, as the verse states, “To'abat Hashem Kol Gebah Leb” – “Everyone haughty of heart is abominable to G-d” (Mishleh 16:5). Thirdly, the Sefer Ha'hinuch cites the Ramban as commenting that G-d wants only that which is in its natural, organic form to be placed on the altar. Leavened bread is the product of flour which has been altered and engineered by yeast, and so it forbids bringing leavened products on the altar. As for sweet products, the Sefer Ha'hinuch writes that sweetness represents extremes, which we must avoid. G-d created the world in such a way that it requires a delicate balance between different extremes, such as between Din (strict justice) and Rahamim (mercy). We are therefore commanded not to offer sweet products on the altar, representing the need to avoid extreme behavior. The Torah forbids offering “Mimenu” (literally, “of it”), which the Sages understood to mean that even the smallest amount of Hametz or sweet products may not be placed on the altar. Even if a small amount is mixed with other food, the mixture may not be offered. The prohibition forbids only offering leaven or sweet products as part of a sacrifice; such products may be placed on the altar as fuel, to sustain the fire. In listing this command, the Sefer Ha'hinuch follows the view of the Rambam, that these two prohibitions – offering Hametz and offering sweet products – constitute a single Biblical command. In his view, one who at once places both leaven and a sweet product on the altar is liable to only a single set of Malkut. The Ramban, however, disagrees, and maintains that these should be counted as two separate Biblical commands. In his opinion, one who places Hametz and a sweet product on the altar at the same time receives two sets of Malkut. Needless to say, this prohibition applies only in the times of the Bet Ha'mikdash, and applies only to the Kohanim.

Galatians Deep Dive EPISODE 5, Galatians 5 Christ Has Set Us Free For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. 2 Look: I, Paul, say to you that if you accept circumcision, Christ will be of no advantage to you. 3 I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is obligated to keep the whole law. 4 You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace. 5 For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness. 6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love. 7 You were running well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? 8 This persuasion is not from him who calls you. 9 A little leaven leavens the whole lump. 10 I have confidence in the Lord that you will take no other view, and the one who is troubling you will bear the penalty, whoever he is. 11 But if I, brothers, still preach circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been removed. 12 I wish those who unsettle you would emasculate themselves! 13 For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another. Keep in Step with the Spirit 16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/brotwentyfour/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/brotwentyfour/support

Tim McQueen teaches during our 2020 Family Retreat.
Once the Israel has started the Exodus, God again spoke to Moses telling him that all of the firstborn of Israel were His, because He chose to spare them and not because they were worthy to be spared. God continued on that subject later in the chapter, but now we have recorded what Moses spoke to the people. He reminded them to keep the feast of unleavened bread as a commemoration of God delivering them from Egypt with a mighty hand. He was not just delivering them from Egypt, but He was giving them a land, the land of the Canaanites that flowed with milk and honey. He was taking them from suffering through labor to a place of relative ease. God was doing that so that they would keep the service in the month of Abib, that they would eat unleavened bread. Leavened bread was to be removed from them and their households. They were to explain it to their children what God had done for them that with His strong hand they were delivered from Egypt. It was to be a sign on their hand and between their eyes, so that the Lord's law was in their mouth. God saved us to walk in His ways and according to His law. He frees us from slavery to sin, so that we can walk in a different way than the world.
Trinity 2: 23 June 2020 Luke 13. 10-21
The lamb was eaten with unleavened bread. Leavened bread represents sin. Leaven represents works of the flesh. Leaven represents the things that YHVH hates. Unleavened bread represents being without sin. The lamb was eaten with bitter herbs. Bitterness represents being disobedient to YHVH and to His Torah. Bitterness is linked with rebellion. Bitterness represents hardships, trials and testings. The lamb was roasted with fire. Fire represents judgment. Fire also represents refinement and purification. Fire also represents the trials of our faith: That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 1:7 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations [trials]. James 1:2 We follow up Passover with the Feast of Unleavened bread. Unleavened bread represents living our lives with sincerity and truth: Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as you are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. 1 Cor 5:7-8 Are these teachings a blessing to you? Rev. Gaven Mize, pastor at Augustana Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hickory, NC, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Matthew 13:24-43. Jesus turns back to speak to the crowds with the parable of the weeds. He describes history from the beginning, when God planted the good seed of His people in the Garden, but Satan sowed the bad seed of unbelief in their ears. Throughout history, the Lord has been patient with wickedness and unbelief for the sake of gathering His elect to Himself. He continues to show this same patience to this day. Though this makes the kingdom of heaven seen rather unimpressive, Jesus reveals the reality through the parable of the mustard seed and the parable of the leaven. Though God’s reign in Jesus starts small, it grows and is effective where the means of grace are given and received. Though God’s kingdom is today hidden, it will be revealed in its fullness and triumph at the end. Jesus’ explanation of the parable of the weeds highlights the end times, when unbelievers will be gathered and burned, but those who have trusted in Christ will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their heavenly Father. “All Righteousness Fulfilled” is a mini-series on Sharper Iron that digs into the Gospel according to St. Matthew. The first evangelist proclaims Jesus to Jews and Gentiles alike as the fulfillment of God’s saving words and acts throughout the Old Testament. As the Christ in the line of David and Abraham, Jesus is the promised King who comes to bring sinners from every nation to live under His gracious reign.
QUOTE"Another layer of Genesis is that the first, the middle, and last day are all designed to show God creating structures of time. In the timing of the middle fourth day, God appoints the sun, moon and stars to rule over day and night, and they are to mark the moadim, the sacred feasts, the annual sacred feasts. So the whole sacred calendar of Israel that you’ll meet in Exodus and Leviticus is already baked into the story at the beginning of Genesis. (This is) sacred time."KEY TAKEAWAYSThe Jewish sacred feasts are an integral and overlooked theme in the Bible. They are built into the fabric of the original creation story in Genesis 1:14.Passover is considered to be the most important Jewish holiday. Many biblical themes flow into and out of the idea of the Passover.SHOW NOTESWelcome to our fourth episode discussing the theme of the seventh-day rest in the Bible. In this episode, Tim and Jon look at the Passover and Exodus stories and talk about their importance to the development of this theme. In part 1 (0-12:30), the guys quickly go over the conversation so far. Tim briefly covers the days of creation and notes how God sets up structures of time on days one, four, and seven. These structures are reflected in the Hebrew calendar. In part 2 (12:30-19:30), Tim begins to share broadly about the Hebrew sacred calendar. Tim notes that the Jewish calendar is designed to heavily reflect symbolic “seven” imagery. In part 3 (19:30-37:30), Tim briefly recaps the calling of Abraham that was discussed in the previous episode. Tim notes that Abraham believed that God would bring about an ultimate seventh day. A brief conversation follows about fasting in Christianity as well as a brief discussion on the differences between “hope” and “optimism.” Tim cites scholar Cornel West about the differences between optimism and Christian hope.In part 4 (37:30-43:00), Tim starts to talk about Passover, which originates in the book of Exodus. Tim says that Passover is the most important feast on the Jewish calendar. The Exodus story is presented in cosmic terms on analogy with the Creation story of Genesis 1.In part 5 (43:00-56:20), Tim explains the story of the Exodus and how it maps onto the Genesis story. The powers of evil destroy Israel (i.e. new humanity) through slavery (lit. “working” in Hebrew, עבדה), and through the waters of death. But God acts and rescues Israel. The famous story of the ten plagues are inversions of the ten creative words of God in Genesis 1. All of the plagues “de-create” Egypt back into chaotic darkness.Consider these examples:The Plague of Darkness Genesis 1:2-3 …and darkness (חשך) was over the surface of the deep…. Then God said, “let there be light (יהי אור)….”Exodus 10:21, 23 …that there may be darkness (ויהי חשך) over the land of Egypt… but for all the sons of Israel, there was light (היה אור) in their dwellings. The Plague of FrogsExodus 7:28And the Nile will swarm (ושרץ) with frogs…Genesis 1:20 …let the waters swarm (שרץ) with every swarming (שרץ) creature…The Plague of LocustsExodus 10:5 [the locusts] will eat every tree (עץ) which sprouts (צמח) for you from the field (השדה).Exodus 10:15 …fruit of the tree…all vegetation in the tree and green thing (ירק) in the field…Genesis 1:29-30 I have given to you for food all vegetation… all the tree which has the fruit of the tree… every green thing (ירק)….Genesis 2:9 …and Yahweh sprouted (צמח) from the ground every tree (עץ)… Pharaoh sends Israel out of Egypt at night (Exod 12:29, 31, 42) and Israel flees to the edge of the Reed Sea where Pharaoh’s army chases them for a night showdown (Exod 14:20). It’s at night that God parts the waters (Exod 14:21), and during the last watch of the night (Exod 14:24), the Egyptians falter in the midst of the sea, and at sunrise (Exod 14:27) the waters destroy the Egyptians while the Israelites flourish on dry land.Tim says that this story maps directly onto the creation narrative. The passage through the Reed Sea is all days 1-3 together in Genesis. In part 6 (56:20-end), Tim goes to Exodus 15 to discuss the first “worship song” in the Bible.Exodus 15:10-13, 17-18 You blew with your wind, the sea covered them; They sank like lead in the mighty waters. Who is like you among the gods, O Lord? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, Awesome in praises, working wonders? You stretched out your right hand, The earth swallowed them. In your lovingkindness you have led the people whom you have redeemed; In your strength you have guided them to your holy habitation. You will bring them and plant them in the mountain of your inheritance, The place of your dwelling (שבתך / shibteka / Sabbath!), which you have made, The sanctuary, O Lord, which your hands have established. The Lord shall reign forever and ever.Tim notes that the English word “dwelling” in verse 17 is a wordplay on the word “sabbath,” because it is composed of the same letters.Tim then discusses more details about the Passover and why its importance in the Bible. The Passover is on the 14th (2 x 7) and is followed by a seven day festival of unleavened bread (15th – 21st), that begins and ends with a “super sabbath” rest.In Exodus 12:1-2, the new beginning given by God as he says, “beginning of the months, the beginning it is for you,” parallels with Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning….” Passover is compared to creation as a seven-day ritual the restarts the calendar, like a new creation.Tim then dives back into Exodus 12:14-16, 34, 39.Now this day will be a memorial to you, and you shall celebrate it as a feast to the Lord; throughout your generations you are to celebrate it as a permanent ordinance. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, but on the first day you shall remove leaven from your houses; for whoever eats anything leavened from the first day until the seventh day, that person shall be cut off from Israel. On the first day you shall have a holy assembly, and another holy assembly on the seventh day; no work at all shall be done on them, except what must be eaten by every person, that alone may be prepared by you.So the people took their dough before it was leavened, with their kneading bowls bound up in the clothes on their shoulders. They baked the dough which they had brought out of Egypt into cakes of unleavened bread. For it had not become leavened, since they were driven out of Egypt and could not delay, nor had they prepared any provisions for themselves.Tim makes the following observations:12:15 – “For seven days you are to put to rest (תשביתו) all leaven (שאר) from your houses.” For the resonance of “leaven” שאר with “remnant” שאר, continue reading for the comparison of Passover and the flood.12:16 – “on the first day it is a holy convocation, and on the seventh day it is a holy convocation… all work should not be done on them.” This parallels Genesis 2:1-4. The seventh day is holy, for God finished his work.13:6-7 – “Seven days you will eat unleavened bread (מצת) and on the seventh day it is a feast for YHWH; unleavened bread will be eaten (יאכל) for seven days, and leaven will not be seen for you for seven days.” This parallels with Genesis 1-3: There is a certain food provided (מן כל העך), and a certain food that is forbidden (the tree of knowing good and bad). Here's a quote Tim cites in his notes for this verse: “But why require eating unleavened bread as the special focus of the exodus memorial meal, the Passover? The answer is that unleavened bread was the unique food of the original exodus, the event God wanted his people to be sure not to forget. People everywhere normally eat leavened bread. It tastes better, is more pleasant to eat, is more filling. Leavened bread was the normal choice of the Israelites in Egypt too. But on the night they ran, there was no time for the usual niceties—a fast meal had to be eaten, and hastily made bread had to be consumed. The fact that a lamb or goat kid was roasted for the meat portion of the meal or that bitter herbs were eaten as a side dish was not nearly so special or unusual as the fact that the bread was unleavened, thus essentially forming sheets of cracker. Eating it at the memorial feast intentionally recalled the original departure in haste. Eating it for a solid week tended to fix the idea in one’s consciousness.” (Douglas K. Stuart, Exodus, vol. 2, The New American Commentary, 283)Consider these points:Passover is coordinated with the “wonder” of the parting of the waters and deliverance onto dry land (Exod 14), which parallels Genesis 1 when God parts the waters so that dry land can emerge.Passover is about Israel’s liberation from “slavery” (עבדה/עב׳׳ד), which parallels Genesis 1-2 about the creation of humanity as God’s co-rulers who “work” (עב׳׳ד) the land.Passover is a reversal of humanity’s exile when Israel is “banished” (גרשו, Ex 12:39) from Egypt, which parallels Genesis 3:22-24 when humanity is banished from Eden into the wilderness.Tim concludes by saying that Passover and the Exodus are a kind of “new creation” as enslaved humanity is liberated from the realm of exile, death, and darkness and led through the waters of death into the new Eden of the promised land, marked by the celebration of a seven-day ritual (in the month of Abib on the 14th-21st). The liberation brought about at Passover is a new creation. The liberation requires that humans not try to provide their own security or provision (bread) but eat only what God allows and provides. This is clearly in preparation for the manna.Thank you to all our supporters!Have a question? Record your question and send it to info@jointhebibleproject.com. What is Chametz (Leavened Bread) with Rabbi Asher Meza of TorahJudaism.com
Lois Clary is a software engineer at General Dexterity, a San Francisco robotics company with world-changing ambitions. She codes all day and collapses at night, her human contact limited to the two brothers who run the neighborhood hole-in-the-wall from which she orders dinner every evening. Then, disaster! Visa issues. The brothers close up shop, and fast. But they have one last delivery for Lois: their culture, the sourdough starter used to bake their bread. She must keep it alive, they tell her—feed it daily, play it music, and learn to bake with it. Lois is no baker, but she could use a roommate, even if it is a needy colony of microorganisms. Soon, not only is she eating her own homemade bread, she’s providing loaves daily to the General Dexterity cafeteria. The company chef urges her to take her product to the farmer’s market, and a whole new world opens up. Leavened by the same infectious intelligence that made Robin Sloan’s Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore such a sensation, while taking on even more satisfying challenges, Sourdough marks the triumphant return of a unique and beloved young writer.
