Happy feast of Pope St. Damasus I! On today’s show, Matt Swaim and Anna Mitchell welcome Mike Aquilina to talk about how Pope Damasus commissioned St. Jerome to translate the Bible into Latin. Other guests include canon lawyer Fr. Philip-Michael Tangorra, and Gary Zimak with more thoughts on finding peace in Advent. Plus news, weather, sports and more… ***** Prayer to Blessed Carlo Acutis Blessed Carlo, You knew the power of technology and used it to proclaim the truth of Jesus Christ. You also knew the dangers of technology and were intentional in your efforts to guard your heart against them. You used the gifts you had in this world to bless others through radical charity, through seeing Christ in the face of those ignored by society, through the witness of friendship, and through your natural aptitudes with technology. In our world so broken by abuses of technology and which so often ignores or attacks human dignity, please intercede for us to God the Father so we may see the human dignity of everyone we encounter and ask for guidance from the Lord whenever we may be tempted to violate that dignity in our online interactions. Blessed Carlo Acutis, pray that we may treat our ever-evolving connections with developing technology as an opportunity to see the grace of God at work, even in the complexities of our modern world. Amen. ***** Katie Warner, author of My True Love Gave to Me Cincinnati Right to Life is online at cincinnatirighttolife.org. Full list of guestsSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"The yeeter got yoinked." Rave, Kelly, and Eva are pretty tired of watching the same group of coaches play musical chairs with NHL teams, but thankfully this week also served up delights like a puppy pile in Detroit, a gong show in Toronto, and a soothsaying baby in the District. Plus: Rave designed a game that, while not as explicit as Hockey or Livestock-y, may for other reasons be the worst we've ever played. This episode was recorded on December 7, 2021. Amanda and Jenn discuss books about life after divorce, YA read-alouds, queer science fiction, and more in this week’s episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by Novel Gazing, Book Riot’s new literary fiction podcast, Workman Publishing, publisher of Let’s Be Weird Together: A Book About Love, by Brooke Barker and Boaz Frankel, and Libro.fm. Subscribe to the podcast via RSS, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or Stitcher. FEEDBACK The Shades of Magic trilogy by V.E. Schwab (rec’d by Courtney) A Madness of Angels: The Matthew Swift series by Kate Griffin (pen name of Catherine Webb) (rec’d by Danielle) QUESTIONS 1.  Hello my bookish friends from afar who nurture my love for bookish awesomeness. I have an urgent request for something in the literary realm that can let my mind escape the f-ed up craziness I’m currently undergoing with my soon-to-be ex who dropped a big ol’ bomb on me and told me he’s leaving me. I’m in all sorts of personal crisis at the moment and I’d love something to read at night after I tuck my two little girls into bed and have the psychic space to escape the insanity of my situation and dive into another world for a while. I know you typically only do one type of rec per request but I’m asking for two. Here goes: 1) a kick-ass female protagonist who lives from the land, or in a world where a multitude of place-based knowledge and skills serves her well; yet, without enduring rape and all the other crap that tends to be tossed upon this kind of character in literature. I’ve loved living off the land books since I was a kid: e.g., the Little House series, Scott O’Dell’s The Island of the Blue Dolphins, and the entire Jean M. Auel’s Earth’s Children series. I’d love a new-to-me book or, even better, series that can have me rooting for some incredible women. Pie in the sky wish: that there would be a novel or series featuring something like this set on Themyscira featuring Diana and her amazon community. 2) another fabulous female protagonist who gets knocked off her feet by a jerk of a husband who ambushes her with a sudden and unexpected demand for a divorce and all kinds of f-uppery, who then rises up like a phoenix from the devastating flames (I had to say it) in fantastic style and overcomes the many obstacles in her way, eventually sliding into first as she wins the race to financial freedom, independence, and peace within. Bonus if she eventually meets a goddess of a lover who nurtures her tender heart and soul (this protagonist is bi and is kind of over men and their – generalizing here – serious power issues). Always the most bookish love to you both. Thanks in advance if you can help out. And thank you for your super rad, killer, lovely, awesome and amazing podcast made even more wonderful because I love getting to know you both via your feedback and choices of words and the stories you share. It all rocks and what you are creating and sharing is really, really great. -Nicole 2. Hi! I’m a teacher at a rural school and I’m trying to diversify my curriculum. I teach special education and I co-teach in the general education as well at the high school level. I’ve been working on this goal for the last year or so, but I can always use some recommendations to help me along. I usually read books aloud in my specifically SPED classes, and they have enjoyed books like “Boy21” by Matthew Quick, “The Westing Game” by Ellen Raskin, “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins, “Love & First Sight” by Josh Sundquist, and a smattering of short stories from “My True Love Gave to Me” and “Grim” anthologies that I have pulled from in the last couple of years (thanks to Book Riot). Right now, I’m reading them “Whale Talk” by Chris Crutcher, a personal favorite, and my kids are really enjoying that one as well. As you can tell, the reading level varies. Because I read the information aloud to my students, I can get away with some of the higher-leveled books or stories because we spend so much time in discussion. I’d love to see what you have in store for us! -Taylor 3. Hi! I need some help finding good introductions on books about feminism, institutional racism, slavery and honestly, any other social topics to help break through to some of my MAGA family members. I was a little overwhelmed when I walked into the bookstore, so hopefully you guys can help parse down titles to start with. Some shorter titles would probably be best, and non-fiction titles would be great too! Thanks so much for everything, my reading list is much more diverse partly because of this podcast! I appreciate it so much. -Ashle 4. No deadline, but I would love a recommendation soon. I was recently hit with the news that my partner of ten years wants a divorce. I usually go to novels for solace, but my two favorites are Dpt. of Speculation and I Married You for Happiness, and I don’t think they will help right now. I’ve found plenty of self help books, but I’m looking for good stories of people starting over after a divorce or loss, and moving forward with life. Especially if those stories involve people who can’t afford to drop everything and “eat, pray, love” around the world. Thank you, Amanda and Jenn-you’ve recommended so many perfect books in the past, I hope you can help. -KJ 5. Hi ladies, I’m a podcast/audiobook addict. So, naturally, when I’m at work, I’m either listening to Book Riot podcasts, or a book. After hearing Every Heart A Doorway recommended a million times (maybe a slight exaggeration, but probably not much of one…) I FINALLY listened to it and fell in love with Seanan McGuire. I have listened to all of the Every Heart a Doorway series, as well as Sparrow Hill Road and loved them all. Do you have any recommendations for similar authors? I love that her books feel like a fairy tale, while still using familiar language (unlike high fantasy where the language is often unfamiliar). I also appreciated how inclusive the Every Heart a Doorway series is. Thank you so much for all the workday entertainment! -Traci 6. I recently saw the new Star Wars and was unimpressed (to put it mildly) with its idea of queer representation. Could you recommend a fun space opera adventure with actual substantial queer rep as well as POC? I’m already rereading Becky Chambers’ series so I need something new. I’d be open to a romance novel, but nothing too steamy. -Emily 7. This is probably a long shot. I used to be an avid reader, then I had my son who is now 15 months old. I am able to listen to books on audio at work, which has been awesome for getting me back into reading. I’ve been trying to find a book with a specific set of criteria. I really want to find a book with a character that I can really relate to, but in the fantasy genre. I’m 25, so not necessarily YA, but YA is fine, I would love the book to have a protagonist that is a young Mom, with a young child. Where I’m having trouble is finding books that are fantasy, that have this request. I’m really hoping you can help me. I love the Podcast! First Draft Episode #206: Stephanie Perkins and Sarah Enni I was thrilled to do an event with Stephanie Perkins, New York Times bestselling author of Anna and the French Kiss, editor of My True Love Gave to Me, and many more. We met at Malaprop’s, Stephanie’s local bookstore in Asheville, North Carolina, to discuss villains in contemporary stories, our favorite podcasts, and the upcoming Netflix movie based on Stephanie’s most recent novel, There’s Someone Inside Your House! Links and Topics Mentioned In This Episode In Tell Me Everything By Sarah Enni, the main character Ivy uses a Post Secret type app called Veil and is faced with the moral ambiguity of social media apps. Ivy deals with the negativity of social media and twisting herself into knots trying to defend something that is special to her. The first time that Sarah was in Asheville she was interviewed Beth Revis (Author of Across The Universe, listen to her episode of First Draft here), Meagan Spooner (Author of The Starbound Trilogy , listen to her episode of First Draft here), and Megan Sheperd (Author of Grim Lovelies, listen to her episode of First Draft here) for First Draft and she was able to reach out to them through Twitter. She believes that social media is morally gray because sites like Twitter have helped her make friends and connect with people but have also dismantled other peoples lives. The creator of the app Veil is a villain called Rake Burmkezerg which is an acronym for Mark Zuckerberg. Rake creates an app that fosters a lot of negativity but wants to take no accountability for it which is what makes him the villain. During her writing process, Sarah got the chance to explore her feelings about the people who have created the systems that are in charge and so much apart of our lives now e.g. Larry Ellison (Founder of Oracle Corporation) , Mark Zuckerberg (CEO of Facebook) and Jack Dorsey (CEO of Twitter). They manage a huge part of their lives and are met with almost no accountability. Stephanie was previously seen as an exclusively Romance genre was always interested in True Crime, Horror and Thrillers. There’s Someone Inside Your House is her first thriller. Scream (movie), was very influential to Stephanie as a child and turned her from a very frightened child into someone who saw how fun they could be and how they could be a safe place to explore your fears. Most of Stephanie’s horror background comes from Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton as well as Stephen King novels. There’s Someone Inside Your House is a very traditional thriller but Stephanie wanted to keep the killer's point of view out of it. Since our society celebrates villains like Hannibal Lecter and Freddy vs. Jason (movie) she wanted to take that element out of the story and focus on the victims. Netflix has purchased There’s Someone Inside Your House a year ago and Stephanie has received the script! Henry Gayden is the screenwriter for the project and also the screenwriter for Shazam! (movie) as well as the Spider-man: Into the Spiderverse sequel (movie). Judy Blume’s books talk about Belted undergarments and are dated but still end up being universal and timeless. So Sarah doesn’t worry about her books becoming dated and writes about what is relevant to her book now. Sarah Enni’s First Draft Podcast episode in which she talks about her positive high school experience which also inspired the high school in Tell Me Everything. In the eighth grade, Sarah realized her favorite movie Rushmore was her favorite movie and Radiohead was her favorite band. And she still goes back to that person to check in to make sure she’s still in touch with it and that’s were her pull to the YA genre came from. Sarah loves NPR and started this podcast because she always wanted to be Nina Totenberg. Sarah and Stephanie podcast recommendations: How Did This Get Made, Welcome to Nightvale, Truth and Justice with Bob Ruff, and My Favorite Murder. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis was very influential to Stephanie to the point where she named her cat Mr. Tumnus. When writing Anna and the French Kiss, Lola and the Boy Next Door and Isla and the Happily Ever After, Stephanie wanted to take elements of fairy-tales and even paranormal romance and pull that off with a realistic ending. She wanted the idea of two teenagers who are meant to be and will be together forever. I WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! Have a question about writing or creativity for Sarah Enni or her guests to answer? Amanda and Jenn discuss stocking-stuffer books, seasonal short stories, romances, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by No Time To Spare, new essays from Ursula K. Le Guin, and OwlCrate.   Questions   1. Hi Jenn and Amanda, I’m looking for some good romances for the holiday season. All my life I’ve had my internal misogyny telling me that romance was a waste of time and bad writing, but I’m ready to get out there and expand my horizons. I mostly read YA and nonfiction, but I’m open to anything with a fun plot. I’m in the mood to curl up with something cute and fluffy. I’m not afraid of something steamy but I’d like the story to be more about fun and intimacy then the steamy throws in the sheets. My favorite romantic thing ever is the show Hart of Dixie, just to give you a vague idea of what I like. I’m sorry this is super vague, I can’t wait to see what you guys recommend though! Happy Reading, --Morgan   2. Hi - Love the show. I am looking for small books - literally small for stocking stuffer size that are still good, interesting, fun. Also working with a broad group (i.e. varying political, religious positions) so not trying to start a battle or anything, but fun things - poetry, mindfulness, just delightful things to ponder? Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks! --Shannon   3.  Time sensitive! “Get Booked” is one of my highlights every Thursday, so I’m reaching out! I need help with Christmas gifts. My boyfriend has read so many different things, that I can’t even begin. I’d like a few recommendations based on stuff he loves. Fiction: all time favorite is Matthew Stover’s series Heroes Die & Larry Correia’s Monster Hunter series. Nonfiction: he’s very into paranormal testimonies, David Sedaris, Henry Rollins, and anything about survival. He loves science fiction, ultra violence, and modern day conspiracy theories. I’m excited to see what you come up with because I’d be clueless unless I asked him! Thanks a lot! --Jessica   4. Hello Ladies! I am a huge fan of the podcast and tune in every week to your recommendations and witty comments! You are wonderful and make my work week brighter! I would consider myself a bookworm but definitely more like a tsunduko person. However I have gotten into the habit of reading short stories before bed since I tend to fall asleep in the middle of reading and it makes me less frustrated and guilty if I need to back track the next night. As the holiday season approaches, I am looking for a short story collection to help me get into the spirit, either about winter, snow, Christmas, or something along those lines. I read My True Love Gave to Me: Twelve Holiday Stories last year and loved it but having a hard time finding something this year. I love historical fiction, fantasy, YA, contemporary literature, and obviously short story collections. Not a huge fan of crime, thrillers, or horror. So anything that could help out this bookworm to get to sleep would be fantastic! Thank you in advance! Love you both! Sincerely, --Kaitlin   5. Hi there, Love your podcast and listen to it all the time. I'm trying to get a head start on my holiday shopping and I'm looking for a book suggestion for my mom. She's a pretty steady reader - has read most of the classics and is in an active book club so she often has read the currently popular books. She enjoyed the P.G Wodehouse series and loved Remains of the Day. Her very favourite book is Grapes of Wrath. Hoping to find something she is unfamiliar with that she can really dive into. She is a violence abuse counselor and often really heavy subject matter is hard for her to get through in her pleasure reading. Also no horror please. Thanks --Sarah   6. Time Sensitive (hopefully before Christmas): My husband is really hard to pick books for and I'm needing recommendations. He really likes coming of age stories and short stories that are connected together by the same characters. He really doesn't like books with extremely long chapters that don't have a good stopping point within them. Some examples of books he has loved are: The Road Cormac McCarthy, anything by David Sedaris or Davy Rothbart, Hillbilly Elegy by J. D. Vance, The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini and Palo Alto by James Franco. --Sarah   7. Hi Amanda and Jenn- I am hoping you may be able to offer me a recommendation in time for the holiday gift buying season! A friend and I purchase a book for one another every Christmas. We usually pick something that we loved and thought the other person would love as well. This year, I thought you may be able to help! Here’s some info about my friend: She’s a 30 year old recent grad school graduate living in upstate NY. She works in the Human Services field and is originally from Puerto Rico. She loves Harry Potter. She usually reads YA or fantasy books, but she is really driven by stories that have characters you get to know well and fall in love with. I’m hoping to find her a book featuring a quirky underdog that wins out in the end despite facing life’s inevitable obstacles. It would be better if it didn’t feature sexual violence if possible. Love your podcast and looking forward to the recommendations! If you could turn ABC Holiday movies into a tangible book.... This holiday season, listen to Alissa and Stephanie review My True Love Gave to Me: Twelve Holiday Stories. This anthology was edited by Stephanie Perkins (whom we all love) and includes some of our favorite authors (Rainbow Rowell, Kiersten White, Ally Carter, ect). We're also introduced to some new, but promising authors, like Matt de la Pena and Myra McEntire. More than anything, MTLGtM is a wonderful book to get us into the holiday spirit.
