Summer is in high dudgeon. The news is a rollercoaster the asphalt is too hot for the dog to walk on and all the good drive-ins are two hours away. That's the reality I'm struggling with. I'm trying to adapt and assume you are too. So I offer this, this high summer audio oasis. Drew Landry is here. Drew is one of my favorite comedians here in Los Angeles. He's a buddy, he's super funny, and he has a new special out called All My Friends Are Dead. Drew started doing stand-up at 13, which means that, even though he's only 30 years old, he's already a worn out tired has been. NO! That's me. Comedian Drew Landry. Comin' at ya. Additionally, you've all heard of The Criterion Collection, But have you heard of Vinegar Syndrome? Vinegar Syndrome is basically The Criterion Collection for exploitation films and drive-in movie fair. They are archivists, film restoration experts and curators of our rich exploitation cinema heritage. They have a new box set out called The Lost Picture Show, which features titles like The Las Vegas Stranger, Violated! and The Sex Serum Of Dr. Blake (also known as Voodoo Heartbeat). From Vinegar Syndrome, Dino Proserpio and Oscar Becher are here. True Tales From Weirdsville takes an unflinching look at a movie you may not have seen but you have definitely heard of. Caligula! Starring Malcolm McDowell, Helen Mirren, Peter O'Toole and Sir John Gielgud. What's the one thing that all these actors have in common? They all wish they weren't in Caligula! Find out why! As we always say, this show is brought to you by you. If you enjoy it, please consider being a Dana Gould Hour Sky Cadet. Go to DanaGould.com, and sign up for our Patreon. Five bucks a month gets you extra audio content video content and some other junk. And now… it's on… to our filthy business.

Comedian Drew Landry's new special All My Friends Are Dead confronts grief and loss in a thoughtful and funny way in the vein of a nightclub comic rather than a one man theater show. He talks to Will about starting stand up comedy at 13 in Chicago at a school talent show, moving to Baltimore and really developing as a stand up in the Baltimore scene, moving to Los Angeles and establishing himself there, why he chose to release his mini special on Youtube for free, performing on the road and what he wants to do next in stand up. It's the last episode of the year. All good things must come to an end and so we'll send off the year with three beers. We have Skygazer Watercolors first. It's a 5.5% abv sour ale with apricot, cherry, tangerine, blueberry, marshmellow and milk sugar. It's melange of fruit flavors. Next is Nogne Ekstra God Jul 2022. This a Belgian strong ale is a big beer. Clocking in with a massive 15.5% abv, you know where all those abv points are. Finally we have a Hoof Hearted imperial stout. All My Friends Are Dead is a 13.%% double-mashed stout with roasted hazelnuts, vanilla, coffee and touch of milk sugar. It's a great way to send off the year. We hope you had a great 2022 and drank as many amazing beers as we did. Happy New Years Eve, Critters! What better way to close out 2021 by critiquing a horror film that uses the last day of the year as its festive setting? All My Friends Are Dead (2020) is a raucous machination of a whodunit comedy horror/thriller and left a lot for Melle and Jared to get into. Who was the true villain of the movie? What character tropes were at play? Why was everyone so possessive of one another?! So many questions. Lots of answers (or at least thoughts). Avery Monsen (author of "All My Friends Are Dead") wrote a new children's book called "I Am The Longest Dog." Now he has to figure out how to promote the book so people know about it and maybe, just maybe, will also buy it. We talk about how it feels gross to have to promote something at all, and trying to tackle it as a problem to be solved analytically, while struggling to come to terms with the reality that the success of any piece of art is outside of the control of its original creator. I bring up my own experience publishing and then trying to promote a book. "I Am The Longest Dog" is out now: https://bookshop.org/books/i-am-the-longest-dog/9781368053211

Pattie and Bill go around the world with international movies and shows. We go to Poland with the movie, All My Friends Are Dead. Then head to South Korea and the film, Space Sweepers (which, Pattie very very poorly describes. Seriously, it's a great movie, watch it, you'll love it.) Also from South Korea is the series Goedam. Then we go to Brazil and watch the 7 episode series, Invisible City. And we end with Peaky Blinders from the UK.
Welcome to Episode 367. In this episode we are joined by Joe Stark of Starkcast and Number One Comic Books. In Good Pop Bad Pop for movies this week we talk about the new film Malcom & Marie by Sam Levinson (Euphoria, Assassination Nation) starring Zendaya and John David Washington. Brian talks about a Showgirls documentary You Don’t Nomi. Joe talks about The Silencing on Amazon Prime where a reformed hunter living in isolation on a wildlife sanctuary becomes involved in a deadly game of cat and mouse when he and the local Sheriff set out to track a vicious killer who may have kidnapped his daughter years ago. We all watched another Amazon Prime Video original movie in Bliss. This one stars Salma Hayek and Owen Wilson. Brian and Joe discuss the new Pat Morita documentary More Than Miyagi: The Pat Morita Story. Netflix dropped a violent Polish comedy All My Friends Are Dead. Brian talks about the new film Our Friend. Jake and Brian talk about the new Justin Timberlake Apple TV+ Original Movie, Palmer as well as the new Ghibli Studios animated film Earwig and the Witch. In Television we talk about SyFy’s new series based on the Dark Horse comic book Resident Alien starring Alan Tudyk. Resident Alien follows a crash-landed alien named Harry who takes on the identity of a small-town Colorado doctor and slowly begins to wrestle with the moral dilemma of his secret mission on Earth. In News director Chloe Zhao is going to be working on a new Dracula film which sounds insane. Also, we learned that the Legend of Zelda live-action series has been canned. In Marvel News Blade has a writer attached and it looks like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will get an appearance by Don Cheadle. In DC News will Henry Cavill appear in the Shazam sequel, Fury of the Gods? And it looks like James Gunn has wrapped on The Suicide Squad and he has some wonderful things to say about Warner Bros. And finally, a WandaVision Episode 5 “On a Very Special Episode” discussion. There are some songs too: "Dead With My Friends" by Iron Reagan, "All My Friends Are Dead" by Turbonegro, "Animal I Have Become" by Three Days Grace, and "Beastland" by Author & Punisher. Amanda and Jenn discuss stocking-stuffer books, seasonal short stories, romances, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by No Time To Spare, new essays from Ursula K. Le Guin, and OwlCrate. Questions 1. Hi Jenn and Amanda, I’m looking for some good romances for the holiday season. All my life I’ve had my internal misogyny telling me that romance was a waste of time and bad writing, but I’m ready to get out there and expand my horizons. I mostly read YA and nonfiction, but I’m open to anything with a fun plot. I’m in the mood to curl up with something cute and fluffy. I’m not afraid of something steamy but I’d like the story to be more about fun and intimacy then the steamy throws in the sheets. My favorite romantic thing ever is the show Hart of Dixie, just to give you a vague idea of what I like. I’m sorry this is super vague, I can’t wait to see what you guys recommend though! Happy Reading, --Morgan 2. Hi - Love the show. I am looking for small books - literally small for stocking stuffer size that are still good, interesting, fun. Also working with a broad group (i.e. varying political, religious positions) so not trying to start a battle or anything, but fun things - poetry, mindfulness, just delightful things to ponder? Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks! --Shannon 3. Time sensitive! “Get Booked” is one of my highlights every Thursday, so I’m reaching out! I need help with Christmas gifts. My boyfriend has read so many different things, that I can’t even begin. I’d like a few recommendations based on stuff he loves. Fiction: all time favorite is Matthew Stover’s series Heroes Die & Larry Correia’s Monster Hunter series. Nonfiction: he’s very into paranormal testimonies, David Sedaris, Henry Rollins, and anything about survival. He loves science fiction, ultra violence, and modern day conspiracy theories. I’m excited to see what you come up with because I’d be clueless unless I asked him! Thanks a lot! --Jessica 4. Hello Ladies! I am a huge fan of the podcast and tune in every week to your recommendations and witty comments! You are wonderful and make my work week brighter! I would consider myself a bookworm but definitely more like a tsunduko person. However I have gotten into the habit of reading short stories before bed since I tend to fall asleep in the middle of reading and it makes me less frustrated and guilty if I need to back track the next night. As the holiday season approaches, I am looking for a short story collection to help me get into the spirit, either about winter, snow, Christmas, or something along those lines. I read My True Love Gave to Me: Twelve Holiday Stories last year and loved it but having a hard time finding something this year. I love historical fiction, fantasy, YA, contemporary literature, and obviously short story collections. Not a huge fan of crime, thrillers, or horror. So anything that could help out this bookworm to get to sleep would be fantastic! Thank you in advance! Love you both! Sincerely, --Kaitlin 5. Hi there, Love your podcast and listen to it all the time. I'm trying to get a head start on my holiday shopping and I'm looking for a book suggestion for my mom. She's a pretty steady reader - has read most of the classics and is in an active book club so she often has read the currently popular books. She enjoyed the P.G Wodehouse series and loved Remains of the Day. Her very favourite book is Grapes of Wrath. Hoping to find something she is unfamiliar with that she can really dive into. She is a violence abuse counselor and often really heavy subject matter is hard for her to get through in her pleasure reading. Also no horror please. Thanks --Sarah 6. Time Sensitive (hopefully before Christmas): My husband is really hard to pick books for and I'm needing recommendations. He really likes coming of age stories and short stories that are connected together by the same characters. He really doesn't like books with extremely long chapters that don't have a good stopping point within them. Some examples of books he has loved are: The Road Cormac McCarthy, anything by David Sedaris or Davy Rothbart, Hillbilly Elegy by J. D. Vance, The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini and Palo Alto by James Franco. --Sarah 7. Hi Amanda and Jenn- I am hoping you may be able to offer me a recommendation in time for the holiday gift buying season! A friend and I purchase a book for one another every Christmas. We usually pick something that we loved and thought the other person would love as well. This year, I thought you may be able to help! Here’s some info about my friend: She’s a 30 year old recent grad school graduate living in upstate NY. She works in the Human Services field and is originally from Puerto Rico. She loves Harry Potter. She usually reads YA or fantasy books, but she is really driven by stories that have characters you get to know well and fall in love with. I’m hoping to find her a book featuring a quirky underdog that wins out in the end despite facing life’s inevitable obstacles. It would be better if it didn’t feature sexual violence if possible. Love your podcast and looking forward to the recommendations! http://thecomedycast.com/ Hello and welcome back to The Comedy Cast; today you’ll be hearing from Irish stand-up comedian Conor Drum. We kick off speaking about Conor's Edinburgh Festival Fringe show All My Friends Are Dead, we speak about where the name comes from, don't fear he's friends aren't actually dead, just metaphorically dead. He tells me about his friends always trying to set him up with the loser girl at weddings and he speaks about how he seems to be not achieving "life goals" at the same rate as his friends. He talks about the idea of 'the one' and how simply ludicrous it is, but if it does exist scientists need to descend on his hometown and study his mates because so many have seemed to found 'the one' in their own backyards. We chat then about why it gets harder and harder to go on the session as you get older and Conor laments for his younger days when hangovers didn't hurt so much. I ask Conor about when he meets his married friends now does he get a sense of pity of jealousy from them. We return to the subject of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival then and I ask Conor about his show a bit more, he had actually done a shorter version of it last year so I wanted to know more about the process of improving on last year's show. We talk about some of the highs and lows of performing at the Fringe over the years and what he's learned during that time from performing there and how those experiences have helped with him putting on his current show All My Friends Are Dead. It comes up a lot on the podcast that Irish comedians almost have to move to England to make it there first and Conor tells me a story about a time he met Jimmy Carr while working and some advice he gave Conor about getting better gigs in The UK. Conor Drum will be well-known to Irish listeners, he made headlines in Ireland in 2014, when his show Nutjob about his testicular cancer became widely known, so we speak about that as well. Conor also does a bit of acting and writing so we got talking about a recent article he wrote for HuffPost about the new drinking session, a Baby Storm, a bit like a Baby Shower, but totally different and actually enjoyable. We talk then about film, what he loves about it and what he's like to do in the future but also what he prefers about stand-up comedy when you compare the two disciplines. We speak then about his writing process and how he likes to expand on ideas and who his comedic influences were growing up.

Woah! 2012 is less than two months old, and there's already so much kick-ass rock n' roll coming out that it's making my head spin! So yeah, this time around Random Old Records Podcast #40 is an uninterrupted hour of straight-up jams because there just wasn't any room for the quirky soundbytes you all know and love. HAHA. This fat stack of tracks features one song each from the latest batch of HoZac Records releases, including The Band In Heaven, Radar Eyes, Teledrome, and Bare Mutants, which all rule as usual. Mark my words!Random Old Records #40 also features an EXCLUSIVE track from the upcoming second LP by killer Wisconsin garage punk duo The Hussy! It's called "Mind Alright," the LP is called Weed Seizure, and it's set to be released by Tic Tac Totally sometime next month. Elsewhere, you'll hear BRAND NEW tracks from upcoming releases by The Sugar Stems, Digital Leather, and Terry Malts, current tunes by Coasting, Gap Dream, Wiccans, The Pharmacy, and Gary Wrong, classics from the Angry Samoans and Teengenerate, and more, more, MORE!!! It all finishes up with a modern classic pop tune from former Lost Sounds and River City Tanlines frontwoman Alicja-Pop that will shake you up good if you're paying attention. This is one of my favorite episodes I've coughed up in awhile, so I hope y'all dig it!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via iTunes, Google Play, or RSS. On this episode of Comical Radio Classic, Danny Lobell and Chris Iacono are joined by Genevieve Joy on the third mic. The show starts off explaining the history of Chris and Gen’s complicated relationship. The first guest of the show is Avery Monsen who has written a few books including “All My Friends Are Dead” and “I Feel Relatively Neutral About NY.” If any listener was wondering, Avery cannot physically defend himself and does not wish to participate in a fight just to prove this. Danny shares a story of how when he was a teenager he was beat up by 30 eight year olds. The second guest was Mike Lawrence. Mike is a friend of Danny’s and Danny goes far enough to compare him to being the next Carlin. In high school he wasn’t allowed to attend prom, yet instead of going to his high school reunion next month he posted on a Facebook forum to let his classmates be aware of his success. Harrison Greenbaum was the third guest of the day. Harrison has been on an episode of TMI before, however the entirety of his visit was dedicated to Naturman proclaiming that Harrison must be gay--today there was none of that. Being a Harvard alum and a comedian aren’t the only things on his resume; he also doubles as a magician and magic camp counselor. Chris has been skeptical of magicians and magic tricks since the wee age of eleven. Oh and don’t forget, we have merchandise now...BUY OUR STICKERS!
