Two young saints, one who loved mountaineering and the other rocked Nike sneakers: Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati prove holiness doesn't mean leaving normal life behind—it means living it to the fullest with Christ.  Father Dave and Deacon Bob reflect on Pope Leo's homily at the canonization Mass for these two young Italians and explore why so many saints begin saying yes to God in their youth.  True to They That Hope form, they take a lap through the weekend in sports, from NFL openers to U.S. Open storylines to the eternal LeBron vs. Jordan debate. Then they settle into the title's theme: modern sanctity. Carlo's wisdom (“In front of the sun you get a tan; in front of the Eucharist, you become a saint”) and Frassati's cry “to the heights!” frame a simple invitation: say yes to the Lord today.  They close with campus updates, a prayer, and a warm invitation to share your favorite podcast memories. Saints Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati, pray for us!    Highlighted Sections  (00:29) Jubilee of Hope and Merch Madness  Father Dave and Deacon Bob kick things off with playful banter about sponsors, the Jubilee Year of Hope, and whether the pope might be a secret podcast listener. They also remind everyone there's one last chance to snag They That Hope merch, including the highly prized Heather Khym mug, at CatholicToTheMax.com.  (07:24) NFL, Tennis, and the LeBron vs. Jordan Debate  They next jump into sports to discuss the NFL's opening weekend, recap the US Open finals, and, of course, argue over The Athletic's “Basketball 100.” Jordan or LeBron? The debate continues.  (15:47) Franciscan Homecoming Preview  Campus is buzzing for Homecoming Weekend with chapel tours, a St. Francis Festival, and alumni reunions. Father Dave and Deacon Bob share details on the newly renovated Christ the King Chapel and joke about who may—or may not—be getting awards at the banquet. (Pssst, sign up to join Homecoming here.)  (21:43) Five Years of Movies, Memes, and Memories  Looking back on the podcast's run, the hosts laugh about their obsessions (Hamilton, Top Gun, Black Widow) and reflect on milestones from solar eclipses to campus life during COVID. They recall both joyful and sobering moments, always framed through the lens of hope.  (26:16) Modern Saints for Modern Times  Next, they move into the heart of the episode: celebrating the canonizations of Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati. Father Dave and Deacon Bob highlight the families present in Rome, the youthful joy of both saints, and the reminder that holiness often begins with a simple yes lived in ordinary life.  (32:54) Carlo's Wisdom in His Own Words  “In front of the sun you get a tan; in front of the Eucharist, you become a saint!” The hosts share Carlo's best lines on joy, sin, and holiness, and revisit his Eucharistic Miracles project as a reminder of how young people enrich the Church.  (35:37) Prayer and Sending Forth  The episode closes with gratitude for these new saints, a prayer for their intercession, and a heartfelt thank-you to listeners. As the season draws to a close, Father Dave and Deacon Bob invite fans to send memories and well-wishes to Hope@Franciscan.edu.    Resources Mentioned   They That Hope Mug that Heather Khym Illegally Stole from Deacon Bob's House and Vandalized with Abiding Together Propaganda— purchase your own at CatholicToTheMax.com.  “The Basketball 100”— from The Athletic   FaithAndReason.com — more Catholic content from Franciscan University  Homecoming Weekend— learn more about Franciscan's upcoming homecoming from September 26-28, 2025  Papal Chapel with the Rite of Canonization of Blesseds Pier Giorgio Frassati and Carlo Acutis— Pope Leo's canonization homily  “Blessed Carlo Acutis and the Many Miracles of the Eucharist” by Timothy P. Opening Story: Country Mart in Coweta, AmericaHost shares a humorous experience at the Country Mart grocery store in Coweta, Oklahoma, a beloved local spot with no self-checkout and bag boys who carry groceries to cars. After Mass, dressed in a suit, the host is mistaken for a preacher by four different people (a passerby, a deli customer, the cashier, and a bag boy).Jokes about leveraging his "preacher hair" and suit to become the mayor and preacher of Coweta, introducing the concept of "nondenominational Catholic" (a playful term explained as Catholics not being a denomination, derived from Latin de nominae meaning "other name").Reflects on the Christian culture of the store, where such assumptions are a kind gesture.Coweta Anecdote: Natural Family Planning (NFP) StoryHost recounts a family story about his parents, the first NFP teachers in Oklahoma, teaching the Couple to Couple League's symptothermal method.A humorous moment from a class where a participant mispronounced "coitus" as "Coedes," leading to an ongoing family joke about Coweta (pronounced similarly).Mentions his in-laws' involvement in promoting NFP classes and their eventual move to Coweta, tying it to the town's significance.Listener Question: Plenary Indulgence During Sede VacanteListener query: Can a plenary indulgence be received during a sede vacante (when there is no pope), given the condition of praying for the pope's intentions?Hosts ponder without definitive answers, suggesting:Prayer is outside linear time, so praying for the next pope or the recently deceased pope's soul might satisfy the condition.Pope Francis' intentions for the month (published in advance) could still be prayed for.No prayer is wasted; God applies it appropriately, even if the target (e.g., a soul in hell or heaven) cannot benefit.Encourage canon lawyers or experts to clarify, acknowledging their limited knowledge on the topic.Brief mention of Polymarket, a prediction market where bets can be placed on the next pope, highlighting absurd betting trends.Pilgrimage PromotionPromotion of Select International Tours, a long-time sponsor offering pilgrimages to holy sites worldwide for 34 years.Visit selectinternationaltours.com for details on their high-quality tours with excellent hotels and guides.Clarification from Previous EpisodeCorrection from a prior episode about papal eligibility: Any baptized Catholic man can theoretically be elected pope, not just clergy.Hypothetical first act as pope:One host would set a date for Blessed Carlo Acutis' canonization, expected to be a priority for the next pope.Other host jokingly suggests suppressing the Jesuits, quickly clarifying it's a jest, praising Jesuits like Father Mitch Pacwa and noting their potential as Dominicans.Main Topic: Time Management for Catholic DadsIntroduction and Context:Host shares a chaotic day (e.g., a cow in the wrong pasture) to humorously underscore the need for time management, the episode's focus.Aimed at Catholic dads balancing work, family, and prayer life.Philosophical Understanding of Time:Time is a gift from God, not an enemy, akin to grace—available only in the present moment, not to be saved or earned.Avoid the mindset of “just getting past this weekend” to reach holiness; every moment is an opportunity for sanctity through fulfilling one's vocation.Busyness does not equal holiness; faithfulness and resignation to divine providence do.References a conversation with Dr. Carlo Broussard defining time as “the measurement of change,” emphasizing human agency in shaping incremental changes toward...

As Divine Mercy Sunday approaches, Barb Ernster and Katie Moran reflect on the life and legacy of Blessed Carlo Acutis—the soon-to-be canonized "millennial saint." In this inspiring conversation, they explore how Carlo's deep devotion to the Eucharist, quiet sacrifices, and digital evangelization echo the spirit of St. Francisco and St. Jacinta. They also share how April is a powerful month for Fatima devotees, honoring saints like St. Francisco and St. Louis de Montfort. Tune in to hear how Carlo's example offers a radiant path of holiness for today's youth in an age of distraction. This episode is pre-recorded. In light of Pope Francis's passing, the canonization of Blessed Carlo Acutis has been deferred. We join in prayer for the Church during this time of transition.

"We'll never age, we'll never die, and all our dreams come true the instant that we have them." "Yeah, it's just not enough, is it?" This profound insight launches us into a wide-ranging exploration of human nature and modern Catholic challenges. We dive deep into the controversial case of Blessed Carlo Acutis and the troubling evolution of the Church's canonization process. Since Pope John Paul II removed the adversarial "devil's advocate" role, canonizations have exploded in number, with one priest lamenting, "We're becoming a factory here." Friends of Carlo share surprising revelations that cast doubt on the narrative around his extraordinary sanctity, raising uncomfortable questions about manufactured devotion versus authentic veneration. The conversation shifts to examining how Jesus is portrayed across different media, comparing scenes from The Chosen, Jesus of Nazareth, and The Gospel of John. Each presents a radically different Christ figure—from a hesitant, uncertain teacher to a bold, confrontational messiah challenging the religious establishment. These portrayals matter profoundly, as they shape how believers conceptualize Christ himself. We also examine a viral social media clip of a woman contemplating divorce despite having a "perfect on paper" husband, revealing deeper truths about modern marriage expectations, the challenges of working mothers, and what it means to feel "seen" in relationships.Throughout, we weave scriptural insights, particularly from the Gospel of John, revealing how its rich symbolism of "the hour," bread, and wine points toward the Eucharistic kingdom Jesus established. Join us for this thought-provoking conversation that challenges comfortable assumptions and invites deeper reflection on faith, relationships, and the media that shapes our spiritual imagination.Support the showSponsored by Recusant Cellars, an unapologetically Catholic and pro-life winery from Washington state.
