This week, in what is normally the interview segment of Vatican Insider, I've prepared a Special on the beautiful Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary of Pompeii, just south of Naples. Why this shrine this week? Well, just this week Pope Francis authorized the promulgation of the decree of canonization of Blessed Bartolo Longo who founded this shrine in the 19th century. Bartolo Longo's life story should be told in a full length movie. Born into a very wealthy and very Catholic family, Bartolo studied law and in his university years was a follower of satanism. We learn of his conversion – his return to the faith – his love for Mary and the rosary, how he founded this shrine, his beatification by St. John Paul and his canonization, now on the horizon.

Ibrahim Ferrer le pone voz y sentimiento a los primeros minutos del programa recordándonos el son montuno de Faustino Oramas "Ay Candela", uno de los temas que mantuvo en su repertorio hasta el final de sus días y que, allá por 1968, alcanzó a grabar con el conjunto "Los Bocucos". A 19 años de su fallecimiento recordamos a este cantante santiaguero que en 1957 destacaba en la célebre Orquesta Oriental de Electo Rosell "Chepín" grabando para la etiqueta Valle el son montuno: "El platanal de Bartolo", su primer gran éxito. A pesar de poseer un excelente fraseo, afinación y oído armónico notables, de demostrar también una buena capacidad para la improvisación y dominar géneros tan diversos como el son, el montuno y el bolero, su presencia en el conjunto "Los Bocucos", completando la delantera vocal junto a Carlos Querol, no pasó de garantizarle los coros al gran Pacho Alonso. Definitivamente Ibrahim Ferrer no era un animal de su tiempo. Por esas ironías del destino tuvieron que pasar más de 25 años para que, desencantado, ya retirado de la música, desaparecidos muchos de sus antiguos compañeros de batalla, sus condiciones como vocalista llegaran a ser valoradas. En 1997, como parte del proyecto "Buenavista Social Club", junto a otros músicos y cantantes veteranos, sin perder la humildad que siempre lo caracterizó, alcanzó éxito y reconocimiento internacionales. Buen recuerdo para Ibrahim Ferrer, sin dudas uno de los grandes intérpretes de la música popular cubana. Más victrolero imposible. Domingo Lugo como parte del Conjunto Club, fundado y dirigido por el trompetista Alfonso Salinas, destacaba en la banda sonora de los últimos años 50 gracias al auge de la industria discográfica independiente. En las ediciones de los sellos Panart y Fama, su estilo -bastante similar al del veterano Panchito Riset- comenzó a llamar la atención inmerso en un creciente repertorio de boleros de corte victrolero. Domingo Lugo sobrevivió a duras penas los convulsos años sesenta, etapa difícil donde la férrea política cultural determinó que el bolero de victrola no tuviera cabida posible en la sociedad cubana. A partir de 1968 sucesivas comisiones artísticas lo "devaluaron" teniendo que sobrevivir ejerciendo diferentes oficios, todos ajenos a la música. Sin embargo, Domingo Lugo alcanzó a tener un segundo aire en 1990. "La vida es siempre mucho más" tema casi autobiográfico, original de Alberto Vera, dió título a un álbum producido por el sello estatal EGREM donde el cantante, fiel a su estilo, repasó buena parte de su antiguo repertorio. En particular la versión que hizo del bolero “Murmullo” fue bien recibida. Paradójicamente un bolero enmarcado en la otrora proscrita atmósfera de bares y cantinas, compuesto además por Amaury Pérez Vidal, uno de los representantes de la Nueva Trova de los años 70 el movimiento del que años atrás se había servido la cultura oficial para poner "en jaque" al bolero de victrolas. Arsenio Rodríguez: en sus creaciones el fuerte caudal afro heredado por línea directa de sus ancestros congos. Ciego desde muy pequeño, de extracción muy humilde, la música fue su refugio, reflejando en ella todos aquellos cantos, rituales y toques africanos que acompañaron su niñez y adolescencia. Con su tres, a fuerza de talento y perseverancia, logró imponerse en el difícil y competitivo ambiente de la música popular. Al frente de su agrupación, durante la llamada "era de los conjuntos soneros", estableció uno de los patrones estilísticos más notables de ese formato dejando honda huella en el caudal musical de Cuba y el mundo. Con algunos clásicos de Arsenio Rodríguez en el repertorio de varias agrupaciones e intérpretes, nos despedimos: Miguelito Valdés, Rolo Martinez con la banda de Ernesto Duarte, Rolando Laserie, Carlos Embale y el Raspa con el septeto Nacional de Ignacio Piñeiro, Merceditas Valdés y Oscar Valdés con Irakere.

Dos históricas producciones de las etiquetas Sonoro (sucursal de Panart) y Velvet nos permiten recordar a Ramón Veloz, una de las voces altas de la música campesina. Ramón, inspirado por el llamado creador de "la guajira de salón": Guillermo Portabales, como la inmensa mayoría de sus contemporáneos, desarrolló su estilo en infinidad de presentaciones en directo en la radio cubana de los años 40 y 50. Fiel intérprete de guajiras, canciones, montunos y boleros, ya a comienzos de la década del 50, era considerado "La voz de la campiña cubana". Para finalizar este primer segmento regresaremos nuevamente a los estudios de la CMQ. Buena oportunidad para recordar también a la gran Rita Montaner. A continuación algo de la obra de Ernesto Duarte Brito, notable pianista, compositor, arreglista y director de orquesta quien, además de aportar fisonomia propia a los jazz bands cubanos con sus arreglos, incidió favorablemente en la industria independiente del disco como productor, impulsando entre 1957 y 1960 las carreras de figuras como Rolando Laserie, Celeste Mendoza, Fernando González y Tata Ramos. Entre discos y memorables emisiones radiales, recalcamos la presencia de sus creaciones en el repertorio de importantes agrupaciones de la primera mitad del siglo XX. "La toalla", es una guaracha de Duarte que grabaron para discos Panart: Faz, Vallejo y Espí con el Conjunto Casino en 1952. Emisiones de la antológica CMQ RadioCentro, recordándonos otra de las exitosas trilogías vocales del Conjunto Casino: Faz, Ribot y Espí. La guaracha "El baile del pingüino" antecede al son montuno: "Dónde estabas tú". A su regreso de México, y luego de una breve estancia en Santiago de Cuba en la banda de Mariano Mercerón, Beny Moré reconquistaba La Habana uniéndose a la orquesta de Ernesto Duarte. "Cómo fué", clásico del talentoso pianista, hacia 1952 quedó registrado para discos RCA Víctor. "Bájate de esa nube", otro clásico de Duarte, le permitió a Fernando Álvarez iniciar su carrera como solista luego de su éxito con el Conjunto Casino entre 1956 y 1957. Producción de los hermanos Álvarez Guedes para la etiqueta Gema. Acompañó la orquesta de Adolfo Guzmán. Un fragmento del estelar Show "La pausa que refresca" nos trae a Celia Cruz junto a la jazz band "Riverside", conducida por el saxofonista Pedro Vila. En su inconfundible estilo el son montuno "El platanal de Bartolo", original del compositor y director de orquesta santiaguero Electo Rosell. Bien conocido en el ambiente artístico musical de su tiempo con el sobrenombre de "Chepín", fundó a comienzos de los años 30 en su natal Santiago de Cuba, junto al pianista Bernardo Chovén, una de las jazz band punteras en el oriente de la isla: la orquesta "Chepín Chovén". Recordamos a Chepín como compositor. El trío García del año 1937 con las voces de Justa y Ana María García, junto a Nené Ayué en la guitarra, dejó en discos Víctor el bolero "Murmullo". La charanga eterna: la Orquesta Aragón nos recuerda una de las piezas de "Chepín" más versionadas en los discos: el danzón “Bodas de Oro”. El montuno tuvo significativa presencia en la carpeta autoral de Chepín. Pacho Alonso con la banda de Bebo Valdés: "Dame un chance" En la despedida el jazz contemporáneo cubano a la manera del pianista Harold López Nussa. Entre los cortes de su álbum del 2020: "Te lo dije", con la complicidad de Cimafunk, sobresale este tributo a Juan Formell. Un amplio espectro de músicas y corrientes actuales incide constantemente, en la manera en que Harold traduce la presencia de la música popular cubana en sus piezas. "Te lo dije" tema que da nombre a este trabajo, nos acerca otro de los efectivos ritmos que parió la banda sonora de la isla en el mismo centro de los años 60s: el Mozambique, creación del percusionista Pedro Izquierdo, más conocido como "Pello el Afrokán".

Benny Moré traveled the musical skies like a shooting star; here one moment gone the next. Rising from the poorest section of Santa Isabel de la Lajas Cuba he became a internationally known star known by many as ‘El Barbaro del Ritmo' or by many as simply ‘El Benny'.  Bartolome Maxmiliano Gutierrez Moré was born on August 24, 1919 in La Guinea section of Santa Isabel de la Lajas, Cuba, the eldest of 18 children. His interest in music started early, he often sang, made his first instrument when he was 6 years old and created bands with his siblings. He left school in the fourth grade to cut sugarcane. When Bartolo was 17, he traveled to Havana for the first time, returning to his home town after 6 months. He soon returned to Havana with a guitar and a plan. Times were difficult for him as he tried to make a name for himself. His perserverance pais off when Conjunto Matamoros hired him as lead singer. In June of 1945 the group traveled to Mexico. Bartolo decided to stay, before they left the band members told him one thing; he needed to change his name. In Mexico Bartolo or Bartolome was a slang term for a donkey, not a great name for his artistic career. He chose the name Benny. Benny stood in MX for 7 years, making a name for himself around South America and the Caribbean but not in Cuba. Upon his returnt o his native land in April of 1952, he found himself working at radio stations again and slowly becoming known. He joined the badn of Ernesto Duarte Brito and his popularity began rise  After More discovered  Duarte Brito was not taking him to certain gigs because he was Black, he filed a complaint with RCA Victor - they ignored him- leading him to start his own band with the help of his cousin, the legendary Cuban Trumpet virtuoso, Chocolaté Armenteros. The band recorded their first song in November of 1953. ‘Manzanillo' exploded and Benny became known throughout Cuba. Sadly Benny struggled with alcoholism and died of chirrosis of the liver at just 43 years old. Mr. Manro has appeared in numerous contemporary and world-premiere operas and musicals:As Muscovite Trader in John Corigliano's The Ghosts of Versailles (Pentatone Music: Grammy--Best Opera Recording), as the Mousling in the Los Angeles Philharmonic's Alice in Wonderland by Unsuk Chin, the Computer in Los Angeles Opera's The Fly by film composer Howard Shore (Lord of the Rings Trilogy); as The Chauffeur in Opera Santa Barbara's Séance on a Wet Afternoon by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell); and as Angry Voter in Los Angeles Opera's Il Postino (Sony Classical DVD). Manro created the role of President Lincoln in Golden Gate Opera's world-premiere Civil War Epic: Lincoln and Booth. Off-Broadway, Mr. Manro led the original cast of Center for Contemporary Opera's production of Oration by Line Tjørnhøj. On television, Manro appeared as Joel Lynch and Father Jackson in the European premiere live telecast of William Mayer's: A Death in the Family at the Hungarian National Theater and Opéra Grand D'Avignon which was voted “audience favorite” opera.  Gabriel also played Jafar in Walt Disney Company's original stage production of Aladdin.Gabe's European operatic debut was as Doctor Bartolo (Il barbiere di Siviglia) with Corfu Opera in Greece. His extensive repertoire and engagements have also included the roles of Bluebeard (Bluebeard's Castle), Count Almaviva, Bartolo, Antonio (Le nozze di Figaro), Guglielmo, Don Alfonso (Cosí fan tutte), Don Giovanni (Don Giovanni).
