JENNIFER MELLEN Artist & Illustrators of the Future Winner – Biography Jennifer Mellen is an artist, illustrator, creator and mother living in the beautiful state of Utah. She was born in 1988 in Salt Lake City and raised in Magna, Utah. She has always been passionate about art and expanding her skills with a love for all things fantasy which includes creating strange creatures and dragons in her artwork. Her body of work mainly consists of fantasy creations, realistic works, and bold logos. Jennifer has been drawing from a very young age and, in growing up, she has explored every medium she could find including traditional, digital, and sculpting mediums such as pencils, watercolor, oils, polymer clay, wax, and digital programs. E.”) Schleicher is an award-winning author who writes stories that leave behind a fantastical aftertaste long after reading. His short fiction has appeared in L. In 2021 she and her husband started a business called SeaDragon Cove producing and selling fantasy products at various renaissance festivals, conventions, and Evermore Park theme park. This became a successful business and they have now joined their company with We Geek Together Entertainment. In 2023 Jennifer was inspired to submit illustration work she created in college to the Illustrators of the Future contest having met Joni Labaqui (contest director) and Brian Hailes (contest judge) in their panel at the Life, the Universe and Everything Symposium. After receiving encouragement from other fantasy illustrators at Evermore Park theme park and at The Dog and Dragon group at various conventions, she entered the contest which resulted in her winning her most recent award and having her art published in L. Dr. Mike Bartolo is a third-generation farmer from Pueblo County, Colorado, and a retired research scientist and vegetable crops specialist at Colorado State University. Mike's grandparents immigrated from Italy in the early 1900s to work in the mines around Pueblo, and after years of backbreaking labor, they saved enough to buy a small farm on the St. Charles Mesa—the beginning of a family legacy on the land that continues to this day. Mike went on to spend more than three decades at CSU serving the farmers of the Arkansas Valley, and while he'd never claim the title himself, many consider him the developer of the legendary Pueblo Chile. I first met Mike back in 2018 through our mutual work with Palmer Land Conservancy, and ever since, I've seen him as a mentor when it comes to matters of water, farmland conservation, long-term thinking, and kindness. His combination of scientific expertise, tireless work ethic, deep humility, and fierce devotion to his family and community is something I've rarely encountered. Mike is also one of the main characters profiled in the poignant and powerful Ben Knight documentary MIRASOL: Looking at the Sun, which chronicles Pueblo County's farming community and its fight to protect its land and water—so it was an honor to finally sit down with him for this long-overdue conversation. We started with the remarkable story of his grandparents—including his grandfather Rocco, who survived being a prisoner of war in World War I before returning to Colorado to break rocks for the steel industry—and how that generation's sacrifice continues to guide Mike today. We talked about his childhood on the family farm, where he and his five siblings turned every chore into an Olympic competition, and his path to becoming a plant scientist at CSU. We discussed what makes Pueblo County's farmland world-class, the cautionary tale of Crowley County's devastating water sales, and why Mike believes educating and mobilizing the public is the key to protecting the Arkansas Valley's water. 6/11/25 - This is the astonishing true story of Blessed Bartolo Longo (1841–1926), a man who descended into darkness as a satanic priest during his years as a law student in Naples—but who was rescued by divine grace and became one of the Church's most fervent promoters of the Holy Rosary. Raised in a devout Catholic family, Bartolo fell away from the faith during his university studies, swept up in the anti-clerical, occult movements of his time. He was ordained a satanic priest and suffered severe depression, paranoia, and spiritual torment. But through the prayers of his family and the guidance of a Dominican priest, Fr. Alberto Radente, Bartolo experienced a miraculous conversion. Devoting his life to penance and reparation, Bartolo dedicated himself to Mary under the title of Our Lady of the Rosary. He helped rebuild the faith of an entire region by bringing the Rosary to the poor in Pompeii, where he founded the now world-famous Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary of Pompeii. He also established schools, orphanages, and legal aid for the poor—all as acts of penance and service. Pope John Paul II beatified him in 1980, calling him the “Man of Mary” and a “true lay apostle of the Rosary.”
