If you're going to reject conventional thinking and instead trust your intuition, you'll find yourself sharing tons of ideas with others. But this can feel scary, like our ideas are secrets we'd prefer to keep inside. And when someone shoots them down, we assume they just don't "get it."But what if the point of sharing our ideas is NOT to get the approval of others?Today, we go outside our echo chamber with Unthinkable contributor Andrew Littlefield to hear the story of an unusual art project in Brooklyn. Then, we talk to internet legend and creator of PostSecret.com, Frank Warren, to hear the story of his epic project. KEEP MAKING WHAT MATTERS:1. How can you be perfectly fine with cancer? If you have ever had the big “C” diagnosis, the words perfectly fine don't readily come to mind! Deb Krier had to work emotionally through her initial diagnosis of Stage 0 cancer that moved to Stage 4 triple positive breast cancer. She is now a coalition builder and warrior who is rewriting the playbook on how to live with cancer. Even after catastrophic complications from her first chemotherapy treatment, she maintained her sense of humor and continued to work. In fact, her work expanded and intensified with a renewed purpose. Like many who move through difficult experiences, Krier expanded her coaching business with a mission to ensure we are no longer just perfectly fine with cancer. Providing educational materials and support to those on similar journeys has now become her passion. What Krier did with her Cancer diagnosis is a beautiful example of how one can use a situation in life, whether good or bad, to propel one to action in an area that would normally not be pursued. The perfect time for this is at mid-career or the halftime of life. Deb was able to get beyond her fear and physical setbacks to move forward. She had both the skills and the passion that uniquely equipped her to help others. She does this through her website, TryingNotToDie.live (https://tryingnottodie.live/) which came out of her passion to help others live, not die. How long have you kept a secret for? How long are you willing to hold a secret for? I'm sure it gets heavy. In this episode, my friends Sam, Ethan and I explore some juicy secrets of anonymous people — exploring the heights and depths of the human experience.I own a few books that contain these published secrets, I gave it to the boys to read through in prep for this recording. The results are hilarious and heartfelt, I'm sure you'd agree. I decided in the spirit of authentic and honest secrets being shared, I decided to keep this episode completely unedited and unfiltered. Frank Warren is the founder of PostSecret, a community art project where he invited total strangers to anonymously mail in their deepest secrets on a homemade postcard. The response was overwhelming with Frank receiving over one million anonymous postcards and counting. The project has raised over $1,000,000 for suicide prevention and Frank Warren was awarded the Mental Health Advocacy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011 and was invited to the White House to share his thoughts on mental wellness in 2013. All six PostSecret books have been on the New York Times Best Seller List, with PostSecret: Confessions on Life, Death, and God reaching #1. PostSecret.com has won three Webby Awards for "Best Blog on the Internet" and is today the most visited advertisement-free blog in the world with nearly 700 million "visits". The postcards have been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Visionary Art Museum in Maryland and have been turned into a PostSecret album and play. I learned a lot from Frank's story. It's incredible how he was able to overcome his life-changing bike accident, and how he sees himself as oddly fortunate in hindsight. We had a fascinating discussion about vulnerability. People are able to display great courage when they share something anonymously. Frank's platform, PostSecret, has not only changed his life, but the lives of so many people around the world. I was very lucky to be able to speak to Frank like this.

I'm not sure Frank Warren understood what he was unleashing in January, 2005, when he initiated his PostSecret project . What started as something of a social experiment, encouraging people to send him their innermost secrets on a postcard, turned into something way beyond that. It wasn't long before Frank, a mild-mannered man from suburban Washington, DC started receiving thousands of postcards, from all over the world . In 2005 he published the first book. A collection of those postcards, called simply PostSecret. That's when I first met him.

Do you remember the website PostSecret? Well, we've got a couple of big secrets to share with you this week! Ashley's big secret involves sneaking into dugouts, jorts turned into jean bikini bottoms, and Olivia being possibly the least observant person on the planet. During 60 Second Sips, our hearts go pitter-patter thinking about men in uniform, and we consider whether we'd date someone who had roommates (certainly a topic we plan to dig into more in the future!). After a couple of much needed sips, Olivia spills her worst-kept secret and explains why she'll probably continue getting toxins injected into her face, even though it turned her face green. Yes, green. Next, we discuss how daily skincare is important, too, and we ponder if we're too old to not have a skincare routine. And no, Amy, we don't think occasionally putting body lotion on your face counts as a skincare routine (although, irritatingly, she probably has the best skin out of all of us). To round out this episode, we think back to watching the O.C. in high school and laugh about the fashion trends from 2003. And having pants you couldn't possibly sit in without showing everyone your butt crack. --- What is Shots & Thoughts? This week, we have a jam-packed episode! First up, Frank Warren, the creator of PostSecret, joins us to discuss his speaking event on campus. PostSecret is a mail art project, where people mail their secrets anonymously on a homemade postcard. He even dishes some of his latest secrets. Then, our Homecoming King and Queen are here to relive the moment of being newly crowned from an amazing Homecoming week. And last, but not least, Tia Pullens, a graduate student, joins us to discuss her experience with our ROTC program.
According to the Edelman Trust Barometer trust in media, business, and government are at an all-time low. We have never believed less, agreed less, or trusted less. Yet, building trust, and developing the community that surrounds it, remains imperative for any art project, online influencer, startup or brand. So what are the new ways to build trust and community online in an era of mistrust? Based on the research and current case studies, what works, what doesn’t? And how do we figure out who to really believe and rally behind? New York Times bestselling author Neil Pasricha shares the emerging three principles that answer these questions followed by a live case study featuring Frank Warren of PostSecret.com. For more from Neil Pasricha, check out his podcast 3 Books with Neil Pasricha here: 3books.co
This week on The Spark File, Susan and Laura offer up two sparks of inspiration... First, Helene Hanff and her classic theatre book, 'Underfoot in Show Business' paints a picture of the early days of Broadway; and then the infinite spark power of secrets kept and secrets shared.
Ever Forward Club's Ashanti Branch is joined by Chris Ategeka, an entrepreneur, engineer, curator of TEDx Oakland, and the Founder/CEO of UCOT (Unintended Consequences of Technology). (1:25) Ashanti's Introduction. (4:07) Chris introduces himself - an entrepreneur, engineer, father, and Ugandan. Chris and Ashanti share how they met and have gotten to know each other. (6:00) Chris and Ashanti make their masks together, and share thoughts throughout the process. (11:55) Chris shares the front of his mask - funny, resilient, and hard-working - before Ashanti shares the front of his mask - funny, serious, and hard working. (15:00) Chris shares the back of his mask - failure, anxiety, and vulnerability. He reflects on how the function of vulnerability, to him, is tied to history, social class, and privilege - especially as someone who came from homelessness and poverty. (17:42) Ashanti shares the back of his mask - fear (not enough), sadness, and childhood trauma. It prompts him to reflect on how comparing himself to others gives him the feelings of not being enough, and how being prideful and bragging about his accomplishments was conditioned out of him at a young age. (20:30) The men continue to discuss how class and privilege play a huge role in someone's comfort with vulnerability. They talk about the turning point, when embarrassment becomes a badge of honor, in our “culture of conquering.” They talk about how, as public speakers, the audience's class and comfort dictate what they share while on the stage. (30:00) Ashanti shares how he was battling Covid-19 when he was a guest on Chris's podcast. It leads to a discussion on why, even with those we are close to, we still hold back our vulnerability. (36:45) Chris breaks down how everything in life comes down to safety and security. Ashanti relates this back to his work and his own childhood - how he, and now the young men he works with, sought safety and security, feared judgment and consequences, and did not yet know how to communicate the discomfort behind this search. (44:00) Chris shares his thoughts on how to encourage more people to make a mask and be vulnerable. He also gives a brief history of a similar platform to the Million Mask Movement, called PostSecret. (47:45) Chris shares his final thoughts for young listeners, and then the men wrap up. --- Connect with Chris Ategeka: Instagram: instagram.com/chrisategeka Twitter: twitter.com/chrisategeka Website and podcast: www.christopherategeka.com --- Create your own mask anonymously at www.100kmasks.com If you are interested in being on the Face to Face podcast, email us at everforwardclub@gmail.com --- Connect with Ashanti Branch: Instagram: instagram.com/branchspeaks Facebook: facebook.com/BranchSpeaks Twitter: twitter.com/BranchSpeaks LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/ashantibranch --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/branch-speaks/message
Lucy Bellwood, adventure cartoonist and artist extraordinaire, has accomplished significant feats for someone still so young, including developing a loyal and devoted fan base. She is currently working on a book project with Kate Milford about a seafaring adventure graphic novel series with kind and cuddly capybaras. We talk about the eternal artistic hustle, about Kant's admonition "to not number voices, but instead weigh them." Lucy talks about the famous blog post from Kevin Kelley's "1,000 True Fans," and how to develop and sustain enough people who will stick with an artist through thick and thin and allow them to achieve artistic freedom. We talk about earlier pre-Patreon and Kickstarter artists, Robert Musil and Harry Partch, who were free to create as they chose through the patronage of a small but dedicated group of fans. Featured in a prior issue of the Ojai Quarterly by Kit Stolz for her "100 Demon Dialogues" book, Bellwood has just signed a contract for 750 pages of drawings over the next six years. An Ojai native, Lucy talks about connectedness and being known through several generations, an experience rarely duplicated outside your hometown, even as she's been in Portland, Oregon for the past decade. Always innovative and forward-thinking, one of Lucy's news projects is the "Right Number," an anonymous confessional phone line where callers can leave messages and know that only one person will hear them. Her experience at Reed College was formative and unusual, prompted by an influential teacher in Ojai, and which has led to her prolific and unusual career path. We conclude with Lucy's perceptive insights into the social unrest in Portland, and how it does not line up with right-wing narratives, because the protests are limited to a small, six-block downtown zone and whatever rare acts of violence happens can be laid at the feet of police overreach. We did not get around to talking about the 1908 Tunguska explosion, Sumerian cuneiform or the Antarctic expeditions of Ernest Shackleton. I'm excited to be able to share it with you today. Thank you for listening to the first month of The Stories I Wish You Heard. Here's #29 from Project 0.1.
In this episode, I welcome Frank Warren, founder and curator of PostSecret, to discuss the millions of secrets he’s kept and what it means to let them go.

When Tyler requested an interview with novelist Emily St. John Mandel, he didn’t expect that reality would have in some ways become an eerie mirror of her latest books. And Emily didn’t expect that it’d be boosting sales: “Why would anybody in their right mind want to read Station Eleven during a pandemic?” she wondered to Tyler. Her reaction was pure bafflement until she found herself renting Contagion and thought about why. “There’s just such a longing in times of uncertainty to see how it ends.” Narratives, especially familiar ones, soothe us. It’s fitting then that her latest book has been suggested as “the perfect novel for your survival bunker.” She joined Tyler to discuss The Glass Hotel, including why more white-collar criminals don’t flee before arrest, the Post Secret postcard that haunts her most, the best places to hide from the Russian mob, the Canadian equivalent of the “Florida Man”, whether trophy wives are happy, how to slow down time, why she disagrees with Kafka on reading, the safest place to be during a global pandemic, how to get away with faking your own death, how A Canticle for Leibowitz influenced her writing, the permeability of moral borders, what surprised her about experiencing a real pandemic, how her background in contemporary dance makes her a better writer, adapting The Glass Hotel for a miniseries, her contrarian take on Frozen II, and more. The theme of this episode is EDUCATION. We have special guest, Hope Wilder, the Founder of Pathfinder Community School, which is a self-directed learning community for ages 5-14, located in Durham, North Carolina. They focus on self-directed education and applying principles with children. Remember these catchphrases: Is it good enough for now? Is it safe to try? Those who do the work decide. [00:01:13] Chris starts off and talks about his background as an educator and voiced his opinions on the traditional education systems. [00:04:21] Hope discusses how she got into education and founding a school. The more she worked with kids, the more she saw that forcing kids to learn things just doesn’t really work. [00:06:08] Hope explains what it means for it to be a democratic school and how it’s a very systems level of approach. [00:11:22] How do the kids learn skills such as conflict resolution and being responsible for getting their work done when working in groups? [00:15:41] Ari wonders if Hope provides any sort of suggestions, guidance, or options for the kids to work from or if it’s very much from their own imaginations and personal motives. [00:19:36] Chris brings up finding your own resources and how a former student at Pathfinder, now co-works at a tech company and he’s only 15 years old! [00:23:08] Ben asks both Chris and Hope about how they feel that self-directed learning relates to development in the Open Source community as far as the relationship between them and how we can learn from that. [00:28:00] Hope discusses sociocracy which is a form of democracy. There are two important principles or catchphrases that they use a lot at the school. [00:41:12] Chris gives his thoughts on bootcamps vs self-taught. [00:49:09] Hope reveals why she created Pathfinder, which was a part of self-healing. [00:57:26] Hope mentions some resources people can dig into if they are looking into self-directed learning for their kids. She gives MANY, so listen. Picks of the week: [01:01:02] Ben’s pick is a book called, “Essentialism” by Greg McKeown. [01:01:54] Chris’s pick is to check out self-directed education, like Pathfinder. [01:03:18] Hope has two picks: “Outlander” on Netflix and a blog called “Post Secret.” [01:06:38] Ari has three picks: two songs by music group “Moderat,” called, “A New Error” and “Les Grandes Marches.” The third is a TV show on HULU called, “Community.” Sponsor: Linode Special Guest: Hope Wilder.

First Draft Episode #207: Sara Farizan, Katie Cotugno, and Sarah Enni at Trident Booksellers and Cafe in Boston I was thrilled to do an event with Sara Farizan--author of Here to Stay, Tell Me Again How a Crush Should Feel, and If You Could Be Mine--and Katie Cotugno--New York Times bestselling author of How to Love, 99 Days, Top Ten, and Fireworks. We met at Trident Booksellers and Cafe, Sara and Katie’s local bookstore in Boston, to discuss sexy first responders for all your needs, writing humor in contemporary stories, and letting characters make mistakes. Links and Topics Mentioned In This Episode Link to Sara Farizan’s First Draft episode and Katie Cotungo’s First Draft episode In Here to Stay, Reggie Miller (former NBA player and commentator) and Kevin Harlan (NBA commentator) are Bijan’s (protagonist) favorite NBA commentators and when he needs a minute he has them narrate in his head. Sarah had the opportunity to go to Scholastic and read a chapter from Tell Me Everything! Sara Farizan recently watched Killing Eve (TV show), and thinks that because people haven't really seen female serial killers that the characters Villanelle is loved despite being an “unlikable female lead”. “You’re Not Allowed in the Anne Hathaway Club if You Hated Her in the 2000s” article on VICE In Fireworks, Katie wanted to reflect an accurate experience of being a teen especially when writing a historical and not including social media and technology in the way we use it today Sarah made a Trent Reznor (founder, lead vocalist, and principal songwriter of the band of Nine Inch Nails) zine in high school that only five people ever saw. Sarah also played The Sims (PC game) to reflect all the things she was interested in. PostSecret was the origin of the app Veil from Tell Me Everything. At the Boston Teen Author Festival, Mark Oshiro, author of Anger is a Gift; joked that if he could hang out with any villain he would hang out racism. Rules for Being a Girl by Katie Cotungo and Candace Bushnell is coming out in Spring 2020! First Draft Episode #206: Stephanie Perkins and Sarah Enni I was thrilled to do an event with Stephanie Perkins, New York Times bestselling author of Anna and the French Kiss, editor of My True Love Gave to Me, and many more. We met at Malaprop’s, Stephanie’s local bookstore in Asheville, North Carolina, to discuss villains in contemporary stories, our favorite podcasts, and the upcoming Netflix movie based on Stephanie’s most recent novel, There’s Someone Inside Your House! Links and Topics Mentioned In This Episode In Tell Me Everything By Sarah Enni, the main character Ivy uses a Post Secret type app called Veil and is faced with the moral ambiguity of social media apps. Ivy deals with the negativity of social media and twisting herself into knots trying to defend something that is special to her. The first time that Sarah was in Asheville she was interviewed Beth Revis (Author of Across The Universe, listen to her episode of First Draft here), Meagan Spooner (Author of The Starbound Trilogy , listen to her episode of First Draft here), and Megan Sheperd (Author of Grim Lovelies, listen to her episode of First Draft here) for First Draft and she was able to reach out to them through Twitter. She believes that social media is morally gray because sites like Twitter have helped her make friends and connect with people but have also dismantled other peoples lives. The creator of the app Veil is a villain called Rake Burmkezerg which is an acronym for Mark Zuckerberg. Rake creates an app that fosters a lot of negativity but wants to take no accountability for it which is what makes him the villain. During her writing process, Sarah got the chance to explore her feelings about the people who have created the systems that are in charge and so much apart of our lives now e.g. Larry Ellison (Founder of Oracle Corporation) , Mark Zuckerberg (CEO of Facebook) and Jack Dorsey (CEO of Twitter). They manage a huge part of their lives and are met with almost no accountability. Stephanie was previously seen as an exclusively Romance genre was always interested in True Crime, Horror and Thrillers. There’s Someone Inside Your House is her first thriller. Scream (movie), was very influential to Stephanie as a child and turned her from a very frightened child into someone who saw how fun they could be and how they could be a safe place to explore your fears. Most of Stephanie’s horror background comes from Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton as well as Stephen King novels. There’s Someone Inside Your House is a very traditional thriller but Stephanie wanted to keep the killer's point of view out of it. Since our society celebrates villains like Hannibal Lecter and Freddy vs. Jason (movie) she wanted to take that element out of the story and focus on the victims. Netflix has purchased There’s Someone Inside Your House a year ago and Stephanie has received the script! Henry Gayden is the screenwriter for the project and also the screenwriter for Shazam! (movie) as well as the Spider-man: Into the Spiderverse sequel (movie). Judy Blume’s books talk about Belted undergarments and are dated but still end up being universal and timeless. So Sarah doesn’t worry about her books becoming dated and writes about what is relevant to her book now. Sarah Enni’s First Draft Podcast episode in which she talks about her positive high school experience which also inspired the high school in Tell Me Everything. In the eighth grade, Sarah realized her favorite movie Rushmore was her favorite movie and Radiohead was her favorite band. And she still goes back to that person to check in to make sure she’s still in touch with it and that’s were her pull to the YA genre came from. Sarah loves NPR and started this podcast because she always wanted to be Nina Totenberg. Sarah and Stephanie podcast recommendations: How Did This Get Made, Welcome to Nightvale, Truth and Justice with Bob Ruff, and My Favorite Murder. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis was very influential to Stephanie to the point where she named her cat Mr. Tumnus. When writing Anna and the French Kiss, Lola and the Boy Next Door and Isla and the Happily Ever After, Stephanie wanted to take elements of fairy-tales and even paranormal romance and pull that off with a realistic ending. She wanted the idea of two teenagers who are meant to be and will be together forever. I WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! Have a question about writing or creativity for Sarah Enni or her guests to answer? To start this week we ramble on with updates on how our weeks have gone. Annoying right? To summarize: Jessica’s monster baby is climbing out of his crib, she has a sappy moment with said monster, Amanda is back in her mom’s basement, and she had a lovely adult day to herself. We briefly touch on the Februarly Smut Club book; you’ve got one more week to read it and send in your reviews and thoughts because somehow the end of the month is nearly here already! The entree of this week’s episode consists of something that Amanda decided would be thrilling for us all: Post Secret. Jessica is too old to know what that is, maybe you are too, don’t fret, Amanda will enlighten us. We read through and touch on some that are deep, and some that are dark, and some that are much less so. If you enjoy our episode this week feel free to let us know! OR tell us if you hate it. OR ignore us completely. We’re not sensitive or anything. Email us at ladylikepod@gmail.com. Or like us on Facebook and follow us on Instagram.
We all have secrets in our lives, and we all struggle with which ones to share and why. Frank Warren created PostSecret back in 2005 as a way for people to anonymously share their secrets they didn't want to share with those closest to them, and he's learned a great deal about humanity, intimacy, and compassion throughout the years because of those secrets.Frank Warren is the creator of PostSecret, an ongoing community art project he started in 2005 where people mail in their secrets anonymously on one side of a postcard. He's also the author of five books, the latest of which is titled The World of PostSecret. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
