Wrapping up National Hot Dog Month, the chili dog brings the heat. Add onions, cheese, or chili sauce for more variety. With a hot dog, the condiments are endless. Also known as a coney dog or chili con carne, the first person to make a chili dog probably tried it around the turn of the 20th century. Even then it was likely a meat and tomato sauce, not the full-on firehouse chili we know today.
July is National Hot Dog Month and there are so many ways to make a hot dog. Listen to some of Neil's favorites with some tips nd tricks!
Join us in celebrating National Hot Dog Month with our favorite dog, Portillo's! In this episode, you'll learn the story behind Portillo's Chocolate Cake Shake, whose dog was the inspiration for the iconic hot dog logo, and what Portillo's is doing to celebrate National Hot Dog Day on July 17th! A Chicago legend, Portillo's has been serving up Chicago-style street food since the company first opened in 1963 with Dick Portillo's first hot dog stand known as "The Dog House". Today, the company has just under 90 locations and is expanding nationwide! We relished in the opportunity to speak with Garrett Kern, VP Strategy & Culinary, for Portillo's. We discussed some of their fun history and things Chicagoans may not know about the famous brand. Plus, hear about their new salads and how his team takes a customer feedback and turns it into new menu concepts. We also discussed what they are doing to celebrate National Hot Dog Month this July & National Hot Dog Day (July 17th)! The fun includes free delivery July 15-21, an Instagram photo contest involving your dogs (and Aaron's corgi of course), and a partnership with the Animal Cruelty Society to which a portion of all sales of Portillo's themed dog toys will be donated! We end with rapid fire, learning how Garrett likes his beef, what the key is to Portillo's perfect French fries, and what makes their cake so craveable! This week is a special celebration! July is National Hot Dog Month, and the Lounge LOVES hot dogs so they brought in THE Hot Dog Top Dog, himself, Eric Mittenthal! He is the President of the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council.Scheduling made it so Richey and Little Matt were both unable to join in the fun, but Barry, a friend of the Lounge, was able to jump in and carry on in their stead! The conversation centered on... OF COURSE, the hot dog!Sam tells a story that links him & the council from when he taught in a school years ago. SMALL WORLD!Does ketchup belong on a hot dog? Is a hot dog a sandwich? What about BBQ sauce? Is shredded cheese better than liquid cheese? Is it ever OK to eat a chili dog with a fork? There are TONS of questions, and Eric talks about all of the crazy ones that have been posed to him in his years as the Top Dog. Sam actually gets one in that Eric says has never been asked of him! We THINK it's a "good question," since that was Eric's response! Eric talks about the work the council does to promote awareness of certain things in the hot dog and sausage world, and Barry brings up a common myth about hot dogs. The conversation was great, and we feel we now have a Lounge Hot Dog Expert, in Eric!To find out what the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council is up to go to www.hot-dog.org!We are proud members of OddPods MediaPromos: Infectious Groove Podcast & Beer'd Al PodcastFind us on Twitter (@500_section), Facebook (500 Section Lounge), and www.oddpodsmedia.com along with all of the other #OddPodsMedia #Family of shows!

Welcome to July 2nd, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate a special sip and doggone good bite. If you enjoy the taste of licorice, then you're in for a treat. The anise plant is part of the carrot family and is primarily used in licorice-flavored sweets and baking. But it's also used to make a popular Mediterranean drink known as anisette. This liqueur is known by different names depending on where you are. In Spain, it's anís. In France, they have pastis. And the Greeks call it ouzo. Italians call it Sambuca and consider it a digestive aid, which they drink after dinner by adding a few drops to espresso. On National Anisette Day, take a tour of the exotic with a drop or two that makes any meal go down smoother. If you happen to be in Coney Island, New York this week, be sure to visit Nathans for the International Hot Dog eating contest. You will want to get there early as this event draws a crowd from around the globe. The contestants are announced by an old-time carnival barker as if they are prizefighters. And the champion to beat is Joey Chestnut. This man from Kentucky holds the record for eating 74 hotdogs in just 10 minutes. You still have two days left to train for this event, though you might not like this insider tip. Most winners have to dip them in water first in order to gobble them faster. Why not celebrate National Hot Dog Month one dog at a time, with some good old mustard and onions? I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day! July, the month that features National Hot Dog Month and Day, is the perfect time to catch up with some familiar voices in the beef and frank industry. This week's MEAT+POULTRYPodcast hosted Eric Mittenthal, president of the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council and the vice president of sustainability at the North American Meat Institute (NAMI). The conversation starts with Mittenthal discussing how the organization plans to celebrate hot dog season at the time when it usually hosts the Annual Hot Dog Lunch in Washington, DC. Mittenthal also shares stories from NAMI's hot dog ambassadorship program and how the organization is promoting meat throughout the summer, including utilizing more social media posts, including on Tik Tok, to share their messages with a younger audience. Later, he discusses how hot dogs and other meats have retained their spots as comfort foods over the last year. Finally, Mittenthal mentions NAMI's new sustainability framework for continuous improvement in the industry. President, National Hot Dog & Sausage Council. Re: Whether one enjoys a frankfurter, frank, wiener, weenie, coney, red hot or hot dog, July is bound to be a delicious month. This month marks National Hot Dog Month, a full thirty-one days that celebrate one of America’s most iconic foods
On this special 4th of July No BS Marketing podcast, let's talk ketchup, mustard, and marketing.Americans will eat more than 7 billion hot dogs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, 150 million on the 4th of July holiday alone. We average about 70 hot dogs per person eaten each year. If you have one, do you top it with ketchup or mustard?According to a YouGov survey, the most popular condiment for hot dogs is mustard (72%) followed by ketchup (59%), onions (51%) and relish (47%).Age has a big impact on our choice. 73% of 16-34-year-olds ate their hot dogs with ketchup while only 41% of those 35 and older did.Makes sense. Kids love ketchup. Children have different taste buds than adults and notice bitter tasting foods more. Plus creative commercials help create long-lasting habits like adding ketchup to a hot dog. Remember the Anticipation theme from these two classics? But sometimes one organization's message hurts a complimentary product. The National Hot Dog & Sausage Council's Do's and Don'ts of Hot Dog Etiquette surely caught the attention of ketchup companies with this one: Heinz Anticipation Commercial 1979.Don't…Use ketchup on your hot dog after the age of 18.Mustard, relish, onions, cheese, and chili are acceptable.Whether you like your hot dog with ketchup, mustard or some other way, you can benefit from these Messaging Do's and Don'ts:Do…Focus on creative promotions to tell your story. Just like the hot dog industry promotes National Hot Dog Month, you can promote your anniversary, new equipment, locations and hires in a creative way.Do…Make it about your target audiences. Why does it matter to them?Don't…Miss opportunities to promote your uniqueness. Develop a content calendar to tell your story throughout the year.Don't…Make messaging, branding and PR decisions by committee. You'll end up with a little bit of what each person wanted and a lot of wasted advertising dollars.Don't…think your instincts are better than a combination of listening to customers through Marketing Intel, brainstorming with your leadership team AND your instincts. So many times I see companies suffer because decisions made about marketing or messaging are made based on instincts…thinking “I know my market, I know my customers, I've done this for X number of years.”If you're still not sure about ketchup on your hot dog, in honor of my Dad on this 4th of July podcast, I'm going to quote one of his favorite movie characters. Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry makes it clear in the film Sudden Impact when he finished a rant about society's ills by telling a hot dog eating detective at the scene that "Nah, this stuff isn't getting to me, the shootings, the knifings, the beatings, old ladies being bashed in the head for their social security checks... Nah, that doesn't bother me. But you know what does bother me? You know what makes me really sick to my stomach? It's watching you stuff your face with those hotdogs. Nobody, I mean nobody puts ketchup on a hot dog.Hey Dirty Harry, I do from time to time…guess I'm a BS'er when it comes to eating hot dogs.Hope you enjoy your 4th of July Holiday week.
